A multimillion-dollar bidding war has erupted among Hollywood's major movie studios over Lore, a hybrid of traditional narrative and graphic novel from the Australian husband-and-wife team of Ashley Wood (illustrator) and T.P. Louise (author and Wood's wife). We're told that what's gotten the studio suits' Blackberrys all ablaze is that the Lore screenplay from Cory Goodman (who last adapted Min-Woo Hyung's graphic novel Priest into the 2011 thriller starring Paul Bettany) and co-writer Jeremy Lott now has Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson attached to star. Johnson is one of the few actors with massive appeal in overseas markets, as the cuckoo grosses for this year's Journey 2: The Mysterious Island show: It never cracked $100 million in the States, but made $215 million abroad. The other reason studios are hyperventilating is that Lore does for monsters what Men in Black did for aliens: Mythical creatures assumed to be long-banished, extinct, or imaginary are...

Mid-way into the 2011 year was another horror dystopia flic called Priest. It featured Paul Bettany in the leading role. Although this fine actor is not a traditional action hero, he certainly has an impressive acting resume that does not typecast him. As the voice of Jarvis in the Iron Man films, Silas in The Da Vinci Code and also Charles Darwin in Creation, this actor with theatrical roots is not the problem. In the Internet Movie Database, he’s credited as the man who loves to play secondary characters that are scene-stealers.
The one moment that stole the show in Priest is in the animated narrative. It is wonderfully gory and subliminally surreal. Unfortunately, this sequence was not made any longer. An animation can continue in where the live-action film has left off.

Priest takes a stab at blending the vampire genre with mix of sci-fi and western elements, but the results fall short. Instead of something groundbreaking and fresh, the film feels weighted down by bad CGI, editing and close-ups of the Priest warriors that feel left over from a Star Wars prequel. The film does have some fun moments, but the premise seemed more entertaining than the end of the results. Directed by Scott Charles Stewart from a screenplay by Cory Goodman and based on Min-Woo Hyung graphic novel series' "Priest," the film stars Paul Bettany (who is becoming a religious action icon thanks to films like this and Legion), Karl Urban, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q, Lily Collins, Brad...

Director Scott Charles Stewart is no stranger to working with actor Paul Bettany, as they teamed together on 2009's Legion. Their latest film together is also Christian themed, but thankfully this is an anti-Christian film. Priest released in May of 2011 to a mediocre response. Now, this film is moving to DVD and Blu-ray, August 16th. Priest is an adaptation of a comic book to a feature length film. Some of the larger than life characters translate okay to film, but the shallow storyline, geared mainly for adolescents, does not translate well to the length of this movie. And at $60 million dollars, each minute of the film cost 750K. That is unbelievable! In the end, Priest delivers an action genred film, with some western aspects added. The result is not very compelling.

Hollywood needs a hit
Actually, Hollywood needs a bunch of hits.
Actually, Hollywood needs a bunch of big, fat, through-the-roof hits.
And with the summer – and the year – half over, the time to come up with them is running out.
The movie business finished 2010 with the second highest domestic box office on record: $10.2 billion. But this was a misleading, oh, let’s call it a “symptom.” That ten billion and change was like the midpoint in every episode of House where the brilliant diagnostician thinks he’s figured out what’s ailing this week’s guest star, his team begins treatment, and, just as the patient seems to be getting better and the regulars are congratulating each other on the save…the patient throws a conniption fit, thrashing around on the bed and spitting up blood.
Part of that ten billion-plus came from a nearly 20% hike in average tickets prices...

There’s a lot to be said about a movie that knows exactly what it is. It lets the viewer know what they’re in for when they sit down and commit 90 or so minutes of their time and, thankfully, Priest does just that. I say "thankfully" because throughout the entire runtime of the film you’ll know that it won’t take very long, and it doesn’t take itself very seriously - at least not seriously enough for its audience to get angry at how bad it is. The adaptation of a Korean comic book of the same name by Min-Woo Hyung is fast-paced and never dull, and while it may not be very good as a whole, it does feature a cool...

The good news for Priest is that it was not a total flop at the box office this weekend. The bad news for Priest is that it still opened soft, and given the word of mouth being less than stellar, odds are once the new Pirates of the Caribbean opens next week, it will quickly fade into the obscurity where botched comic book movies dwell.
Box Office Mojo reports that the quasi-religious, post-apocalyptic, vampire-hunting, kung fu, steampunk, pseudo-western, comic book flick Priest (that's a lot of adjectives!) opened in 2,864 theaters this past weekend for a $14,500,000 take. That doesn't sound too bad until you consider a lot of that can be attributed to inflated 3D ticket prices. Sony expects that the movie loosely based - as in almost an entirely different entity from its source material - on a popular Korean graphic novel series created by Min-Woo Hyung published in the...

In the stark, humorless world of “Priest,” directed by former visual effects dude Scott Stewart and based on a popular Korean comic book by Min-Woo Hyung, violent fights break out almost all the time. Stewart, who also helmed last year’s tedious “Terminator” rip-off “Legion,” films these fights with sub-“Matrix” flourishes of extreme slow-motion or exaggerated physical performances by the actors (chief among them Paul Bettany). But the most violent clash in “Priest” is probably the way in which a long litany of science fiction and horror clichés rattle and clang against one another; it’s not a movie, it’s a checklist.…...

The war between vampires and humanity has been long.
So long, in fact, it's really been the entirety of known human history; Priest is seemingly not a film that travels along the same time line as boring old Earth. Humans, we're told right at the beginning, have been locked in a war with hordes of vampires for many, many years, and were actually losing. That is until the Church came up with a specially trained squad of elite vampire killers called, aptly, "The Priests", which they then used to smash the legions of vampires into small vampire reservations.
It's now a decade or so later, and humanity - despite being in this losing war for hundreds if not thousands of years - has already found a semblance of complacency.

It’s the post-apocalyptic creature thriller you’ve been waiting for (have you been waiting for one?) Paul Bettany, seemingly unable to find work in romantic comedies after “Legion,” is now cultivating his reputation as a go-to supernatural action star. Will critics embrace the vampires-versus-Church tale?

Chicago – The cure for the Recovering Catholic may be obtained in the new film “Priest.” Both symbolic and kick-ass, Priest has a parallel universe that includes the ubiquitous vampire, but with the bonus of their opponents being highly trained Catholic priests.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Based on a Min-Woo Hyung graphic novel – which has become the latest go-to storyboard for mainstream films – Priest takes all of the intensity of the Catholic faith and combines it with the fanboy worship of the gratuitous and highly trained warrior. Against the oblique enemy that is the vampire, it takes the dudes and dudines with large crosses to “take out the garbage.”
In this alternate world, man has battled vampires since the beginning of time. Vampires, with their abject strength and desire for life sustaining blood (which gives a whole new meaning to “casualty of war”), had the upper hand for many millennium, until the age of the “Priests.

It has been proclaimed that God is in everything, he is everything, the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. This seems to be the strategy adopted by screenwriter Cory Goodman in adapting Min-Woo Hyung's graphic novel Priest for the big screen. He didn't just attempt to make a comic book summer blockbuster -- he tried to fit every motherfucking genre into one single film. Priest is a miracle of excess, it is the world's first post-apocalyptic sci-fi western horror vampire religious allegory film ever made. And it is an unholy fucking mess. It seems to borrow liberally and generously from various better films to create an ungodly gelatinous curd of cinema. Poor videogame action gets combined with characters overdramatically grunting out a slightly-modified version of the inspirational messages that executives have printed under pictures of eagles on mountains. The only joy I got out of watching...

The post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller Priest is set in an alternate world, one ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampires. The story revolves around a legendary warrior priest from the last vampire war who now lives in obscurity among the other downtrodden human inhabitants of a walled-in dystopian city ruled by the church. When his niece is abducted by a murderous pack of vampires, the priest breaks his sacred vows to venture out on a quest to find and rescue her. He is joined on his crusade by his niece’s boyfriend, a young trigger-finger wasteland sheriff, and a former warrior priestess who possesses otherworldly fighting skills.

To his family’s chagrin, this is Paul Bettany’s year on screen.
As 2010 began, he sheepishly admitted his priority was spending quality time with his wife Jennifer Connelly, and their two sons at home in New York (the couple recently announced a third child is on the way).
The only job he planned to take, Priest (which opens this month), is an action flick based on the Tokyopop-published graphic novel by Min-Woo Hyung. It’s the tale of a vampire-hunting Catholic priest (operating, it should be noted, without the blessing of the Vatican) on the trail of the fang-bangers who kidnapped his niece.
It’s not that big a stretch for a guy we last saw as a machine-gun-toting angel, gunning down agents of Armageddon in Legion.

Vampires. They come in all shapes and sizes. They can be good, they can be bad, they can be animalistic, they can even be half-bred. Not forgetting a tad moody. One thing they all have in common though is that they are absolutely everywhere. If you need a horde of evil, bring on the vamps.
Based loosely on the TokyoPop series of graphic novels of the same name by Min-Woo Hyung, in the latest cinematic excuse, Priest, we’re talking more the sightless, primitive, bloodthirsty creatures than the sophisticates of Forks, Oregon but the usual rules apply. They want your blood, and they’re not fans of high noon. It’s just that in this case they’ve been wanting and hiding and warring against humanity for aeons, sometimes winning when human society is weak and self-destructive, but always eventually beaten back.

In the world of Scott Stewart's Priest, it is not just the men who are holy. In the post-apocalyptic world of beasts and vampires, based on the graphic novel by Min-Woo Hyung, Priestess kicks just as much ass as Priest. We chatted with professional ass-kicker Maggie Q about vampires and who would win in a fight between Priestess and Nikita. Can you tell us about your character? I am the only female priest in the film, but you do see others in a flashback. That is the look - all the priests have that look, with that brand on their foreheads, and no names. They're soldiers. They've sacrificed a lot. People always ask me how there are female priests. In this world,...

Priest isn't your ordinary holy man. Based on the graphic novel series by Min-Woo Hyung, these priests are warriors, fighting armies of vampire-beasts. Plus, few priests are as good-looking as Paul Bettany and Maggie Q. We chatted with director Scott Stewart about how he created the post-apocalyptic landscape of the film, the MPAA, and how they went from 2D to 3D. The color scheme is very stylized. Was it based on the graphic novel? The graphic novel is actually black and white. It is very stark, which is really informative because I like to think in terms of silhouettes. Like the the silhouettes of the priests. The Western priest has a different silhouette than the...

On May 13th we're going to get a release that I, perhaps somewhat surprisingly to some of you, have been eagerly awaiting. At first glance, even if you know that it comes by way of a graphic novel, Priest may seem far too out there for you. On the other hand, it may seem wickedly cool, but if that's the case, you hardly need to know anything else.
You may know that I'm something of a fan of graphic novels, but that won't help you as much as you think either, because despite the "connection" to the fantastic work of Min-Woo Hyung, the film seems to have virtually nothing to do with the original work - plotwise anyway.
No, I've been looking forward to this one, because I really want to know what visual effects artists turned director Scott Charles Stewart is going to do with it. Those who pay...

The first preview clip from director Scott Stewart's (Legion) new movie, Priest, has been released and it finally gives fans of butt-kicking actress Maggie Q (Live Free or Die Hard, Deception) something they can really sink their teeth into (vampire pun thoroughly intended). In the movie, which is loosely based on the Korean comic book of the same name by Min-Woo Hyung, Q plays Priestess, a vampire hunter with Jedi-like powers in a post-apocalyptic world where humans live in walled cities dominated by the authority of the Church following the devastating Vampire War. When Priest (Paul Bettany) goes against Church law by leaving the city to hunt down the coven of vampires led by Black Hat (Karl Urban) who kidnapped his niece (Lily Collins), Priestess is one of the warriors sent by the Church to bring him in dead or alive.

New Yorkers got an early taste of Screen Gems’ upcoming Priest this past Tuesday, when Fangoria unveiled advance 3D footage and the animated prologue from the May 13 release. Director Scott Stewart and actor Paul Bettany (Legion, A Beautiful Mind, The Tourist) unveiled the clips at the AMC Lincoln Square and answered questions after the screening. Based on the Min-Woo Hyung comic-book series, the action/Sf/horror flick follows a warrior Priest (Bettany) hunting the vampires who have kidnapped his niece (Lily Collins).

With the ongoing success of Twilight, True Blood and Vampire Diaries, it's clear that the world isn't quite done with the concept of vampires as romantic heroes. Fortunately, for those of us who like some variety in our blood diet, there are still films on the horizon like Priest, Sony's upcoming big-budget take on the Tokyopop manga by Min-Woo Hyung. Starring Paul Bettany as the titular hero, an ass-kicking man of the cloth, along with genre favorites Stephen Moyer, Cam Gigandet and Maggie Q, the film postulates a futuristic world in which the savagery of vampires and government compete neck-in-neck. I recently spoke with the film's director, Scott Stewart. Check out our chat after the jump. Can you talk about...

Last night in New York City, "Priest" director Scott Stewart and star Paul Bettany made an appearance at Sony’s Lincoln Square theater to show some clips of their vampire action flick and do a Q&A sponsored by Fangoria magazine.
While the sizzle reel and two of the clips we saw last night were also shown at WonderCon, we also saw the animated introduction by Genndy Tartakovsky, which was in 2-D.
The super-stylized intro by the artist behind "The Powerpuff Girls" and "Samurai Jack" describes the war between vampires and humans and how the priest-warriors came to be.
Originally shown at WonderCon, the second clip showed Bettany and the Sheriff (played by "Twilight" vamp Cam Gigandet) headed into a gooey underground nest of vampires to shake some info about Priest's missing niece out of their icky human servants. Eventually, the vampires come out to play, and they look...

A few years ago, you couldn’t go into a bookstore without running into an aisle of kids in the manga section, and odds are, they were reading a series published by TokyoPop. Unfortunately, the last few years have not been kind to the company, and TokyoPop has announced this week that they are closing their North American publishing division as of May 31, 2011. They will maintain their film and television operations, as well as their European offices. The news was first reported on The Beat and the Anime News Network and then TokyoPop CEO and founder Stu Levy also confirmed the move on the company’s webpage.
TokyoPop was one of the major publishers of manga boom of the early and mid 2000s. Over its lifetime, the company has released hundreds of volumes of manga, video game and anime soundtracks, magazines, and DVDs. Even more surprising is the timing of the move,...

For all of the goofy CGI, I sorta dug Legion. Sue me. Anyway, Priest looks a bit better, but still features a ridiculous amount of CG and this newest trailer – courtesy of Yahoo! Movies – continues this trend. Opening in 3D May 13th, director Scott Stewart’s film follows a warrior priest who disobeys church law by teaming with a young sheriff and a priestess to track down a band of renegade vampires who have kidnapped his niece. Based on the graphic novel by Min-Woo Hyung.

Yahoo have just released the second full-length theatrical trailer for Paul Bettany’s new movie Priest. This movie reunites him with the director of Legion, Scott Charles Stewart but let’s hope this movie is better than that was. Adam got to see a sizzle reel for it last week at Sony and it seemed quite positive. This trailer is actually more like a clip with 50% of it being dedicated to showing us how one of the enemy is brought down by Bettany along with some nifty weapons.
Priest also stars Cam Gigndet, Maggie Q, Karl Urban, Lily Collins, Steven Moyer, Brad Dourif, and Christopher Plummer. It’ll be with us 13th May but scroll down to view the new trailer below.

Based on the graphic novel by Min-Woo Hyung. Priest is directed by Scott Stewart, and hits May 13th. I wasn't a big fan of Legion(putting it mildly), Scott's previous collaboration with Bettany. But this does look pretty good. Then again, so did Legion!

In 1998, Min-Woo Hyung created Priest (Tokyopop), an intense combination of a horror Western with blazing nonstop action. In this Korean comic book manhwa, a lone gunslinger walks across the Western frontier with an arsenal of weapons. This undead cowboy just wants revenge for the death of his loved one. But as the cowboy kills each one of the fire-breathing demons and hideous creatures, he is also becoming an unstoppable monster himself. His thirst for blood will never be quenched until he finds those responsible for ruining his life.

Just when you thought there was nowhere else Hollywood could take vampires, they pop up in the wild west - and an alternate universe to boot. Based on the Tokyo manga graphic novel series by Min-Woo Hyung, Priest takes place in a post-apocalyptic world decimated by years of warring between vampires and humans. A group of elite warriors of the church, known only as Priests, last defeated the vampires at an enormous cost, leaving the warrior Priests as outcasts living in hiding. The city that remains exists in darkness, shrouded from the sunlight by smokestack soot lining the sky as far as the eye can see. Meanwhile, the vampires are starting to resurface, happily feeding on the unsuspecting inhabitants of a city where it is always night....

San Francisco - "I'm British, you know, so I'm working from a sort of butch deficit." I'll say this for Paul Bettany: he does self-deprecation well. Friday night, Screen Gems took over a theater at the Metreon to screen a few special pieces of footage from their big May release, "Priest," and they showed up with cast members Cam Gigandet, Lily Collins, and Paul Bettany, along with director Scott Stewart and the creator of the original graphic novel, Min-Woo Hyung. Aside from the event's moderator, a local radio DJ who seemed to have a knack for making his guests deeply uncomfortable,...

Screen Gems showed scene footage to a select audience last night at WonderCon in San Francisco. The film is based on the graphic novel by Min-Woo Hyung. It follows a vampire hunting priest who disobeyed his order to track down vampires who kidnapped his niece. During the presentation, Hyung was present along with director Scott Stewart, Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet and Lily Collins. The footage was shown in 3D. Spoiler Alert!!! The footage shown was with Priest (Bettany) and Hicks (Gigandet) in an underground bunker, which served as a sleeping quarters for a few vampires. The Priest broke into a cell where there was a metal coffin and a vampire’s scared bald slaves told the priest not to disturb his masters. As the Priest interrogated the vampire slave, several other vampire slaves spotted Hicks in the hallway outside the cell. They attacked and managed to wound Hicks. Hicks cried...

At WonderCon, Screen Gems treated us to a special preview screening of a new clip from Priest, fully post produced in IMAX 3D, as well as a new extended 3D sizzle reel for the film. While the clip was not as long as last year’s Resident Evil: Afterlife preview, we did get a feel for what we can expect from Director Scott Charles Stewart adaptation of Min-Woo Hyung’s graphic novel. The story in the film takes place some years after Hyung’s original story. Stewart, Hyung, Paul Bettany, Lily Collins and Cam Gigandet were on hand to answer questions.
The clip started off with a lot of dungeon exploration. You could tell the producers quickly wanted to get us used to the 3D environment we were about to walk into. It’s daytime and Priest (Bettany) and Hicks (Gigandet) are hunting down a vampire for information. When they finally corner the vampire,...

A new trailer for director Scott Stewart's (Legion) post-apocalyptic vampire movie, Priest, has been released on the official Facebook page for the movie. Loosely based on the Korean manhwa (comic book) of the same name by Min-Woo Hyung, Priest stars Paul Bettany as the title character, a Jedi-like warrior priest who disobeys church law to go after a coven of rogue vampires who have kidnapped his niece (Lily Collins). While much of the footage in the trailer has been seen before, it does contain a few new snippets from scenes that feature Karl Urban as the leader of the vampires, Black Hat.

A new preview for “Priest” has been released, and though this isn’t the first trailer out, it gives another glimpse into the movie’s dark, vampire-filled world.
This is definitely not a place where sparkly vampires live.
Directed by Scott Stewart and starring Paul Bettany, “Priest” is a thriller where a priest must fight vampires in order to save his kidnapped niece. As we can see in the preview that popped up on SuperHeroHype today, some people in the film's post-apocalyptic world will deny there’s even a vampire menace — but as we can also see in the preview, the menace is very real.
Comic books being made into Hollywood movies are nothing new, but it’s not so often that Korean comics get the Hollywood treatment. “Priest” is a bestselling manhwa written by Min-Woo Hyung that’s been available in English through the American publishing company TokyoPop.

The post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller 'Priest' arrives in 3D finally this May and now a whole host of new stills and an international one-sheet. The stills feature its stars Paul Bettany ('Legion') and hottie Maggie Q ('Die Hard 4.0') sitting on kick-ass looking bikes. Bizarrely though the poster looks extremely similar to a one-sheet for 'Batman Begins'. 'Priest' also stars Cam Gigandet ('Twilight'), Stephen Moyer ('True Blood'), Christopher Plummer, Karl Urban, Lily Collins, Madchen Amick and Chuck himself Brad Dourif ('Childs Play', Rob Zombie's 'Halloween'). Scott Charles Stewart takes on the directorial duties from the adapted script by Cory Goodman based on Min-Woo Hyung's graphic novel series. Check out the one-sheet and stills below....

We haven't reported anything on post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller 'Priest' since last September when we revealed one of its stars Maggie Q on a new character poster. There has been a new one-sheet since but we couldn't be assed bringing it to you. But today we'll make up for our laziness by showing you the pretty crappy new poster featuring lead star Paul Bettany. The Scott Charles Stewart helmed 3D flick is adapted from Min-Woo Hyung's graphic novel series by Cory Goodman. It was due out this month originally but was pushed back to its new release date of 13 May 2011. Joining Bettany and Q are the likes of Cam Gigandet ('Twilight'), 'True Blood's Stephen Moyer, Christopher Plummer, Karl Urban, Lily Collins, Madchen Amick and Brad Dourif.
