It’s no secret that sequel films typically send people running to movie theater seats. They’re a safe bet for a studio like Walt Disney — if audiences loved an original film, they’re sure to enjoy a new adventure with the same charismatic characters and the addition of some new ones (preferably one that can be turned into profitable theme park plushies). For better or worse, Disney has boarded the sequel train and doesn’t seem to be hopping off anytime soon. For the next solid three years, the studio has multiple sequel projects slated to drop — ranging anywhere between the second and fifth film of a franchise. While it can be nice to revisit fan-favorite universes like ‘Avatar’ and ‘Toy Story,’ there’s also a major demand for Disney to return to their original storytelling roots. Walt Disney himself was incredibly opposed to sequels, saying he always had...

Chain, the concept dining experience founded by actor-writer B.J. Novak and Michelin-starred chef Tim Hollingsworth, hosted an intimate pop-up at their Hollywood Chain House.
On both Wednesday and Thursday night, May 8 and 9, the nostalgia-inducing space transformed into “The Pollo Lounge,” a riff on the iconic Polo Lounge, becoming a cozy and classy jazz speakeasy where invited guests were served their take on Kentucky Friend Chicken classics. Chain specializes in transforming chain restaurant classics, like a KFC chicken bucket, into a more elevated version of itself.
For the Pollo Lounge pop-up, guests were served generous portions of chicken tenders, french fries, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese and biscuits at tables centered around a small stage. In addition to the food, guests were able to choose from a menu of cocktails made with the new prebiotic soda Levo, which sponsored the evening. The soda was also available on its own for...

What can Disney say to cinema owners except “you’re welcome“? After all, the studio is revisiting the island of Montunui, where “Moana” takes place, a lot sooner than movie theaters were expecting.
Earlier this year, the studio announced a surprise sequel to the 2016 animated feature for release on Nov. 27. The follow-up was initially commissioned as a television series for Disney+ but it was retooled into a feature film after executives were reportedly impressed by the footage.
Disney shared the first look at the scenes that wowed those Magic Kingdom creatives during its CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas on Thursday. In the music-heavy clip, Moana returns to her home island of Montunui and is greeted with a hero’s welcome. The clip offered a taste of one new song, which appears to be about the wayfinding natives eager to be “back to who we’re meant to be.” Although the...

Jon Musker and Ron Clements' 2016 animated Disney film "Moana" was a massive hit, making over $687 million worldwide. The titular character is a princess from the Polynesian island of Motunui. Her people are content on their island and hate venturing out into open waters, a mandate that Moana (Auliʻi Cravalho) decides to break when a blight strikes her village. The bulk of "Moana" follows the princess after she sets sail and befriends Maui (Dwayne Johnson), an impish demigod with a connection to the blight. "Moana" was nominated for two Oscars, including Best Animated Feature and Best Song.
A "Moana" TV series was in the works at Disney, although those plans were surprisingly altered in February 2024 when CEO Bob Iger announced that the series was being reworked into a movie sequel instead. The release date was given as November, only nine months from the announcement. In terms of Disney marketing, that was pretty short notice.

What have we here? It's a sparkly, shiny... new look at Disney's upcoming surprise sequel Moana 2! Yes, during the House of Mouse's 2024 Annual Meeting of Shareholders yesterday, the company shared some more info on the hotly anticipated follow-up to their smash-hit 2016 animated movie musical. Make way, make way — new image inbound. Check it out above.
Yes, this may be just a single frame from Disney's seafaring sequel, but there's already plenty to catch the eye here. Moana looks older and more confident here, her oar (rocking Maui's fish hook and heart engraving) leading the way. And the animation looks luscious — consider the hair texture and lighting, the oak and the seas. And also – holy mother of Tamatoa, is that a sea monster behind her? It certainly looks like it, tentacles, beady blue eyes and all.
And sea monster sightings certainly track with the synopsis The Walt Disney Company...

Shortly after denying Nelson Peltz a seat on the Disney board, the House of Mouse is sharing first looks at two of their upcoming films, Moana 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King. The Hollywood Handle was the first to share the Mufasa image, which Disney debuted as part of the studio’s 2024 Annual Meeting of Shareholders. The picture for Mufasa: The Lion King depicts a young Mufasa standing at the edge of a cliff while staring out at a desaturated Pride Land. The Barry Jenkins-directed sequel to Jon Favreau’s 2019 live-action hybrid focuses on Simba, having become king of the Pride Lands, and is determined for his cub to follow in his paw prints while the origins of his late father Mufasa are explored.

Exclusive: Auli’i Cravalho is coming back to reprise the voice of Moana in Moana 2.
We last heard that she was in talks, however it’s clear that she was bound to reteam with Dwayne Johnson, who clearly is coming back as demigod Maui.
In a CNBC interview ahead of Disney’s last earnings call, CEO Bob Iger sprung the news that Moana 2 was opening of November 27, during the Thanksgiving stretch. Disney essentially was over the moon with a Moana Disney+ series that it turned into a big-screen movie.
The sequel is directed by Dave Derrick Jr., with music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina.
Cravalho told fans last May on social that she wasn’t planning to reprise the role of Moana in the live-action version of the movie.

“Moana” voice actor Auli’i Cravalho attended her first SAG Awards this year and spoke to Variety On the Carpet presented by Directv about the hit Disney animated movie becoming a full blown franchise. The studio surprised fans earlier this month by announcing the “Moana” television series it had been developing was now a movie sequel set for a theatrical release this November.
“It feels like the ‘Moana’ universe is expanding and I love that,” Cravalho told Variety’s Angelique Jackson. “I love that Moana is a hero to all. It changed what it meant to be a Disney princess. You can be strong and brave and stand up against a demigod. It feels really good that more and more generations are going to be able to relate to this character.”

Deadline has learned that the action star in fact is in talks, and it’s looking good. And as Maui says, “You’re welcome.”
The jury is still out on whether Auli’i Cravalho comes back as the voice of Moana. We hear that the actress is in talks, but they aren’t as close as Johnson’s. Cravalho already said in May on social that she won’t be reprising Moana in the live-action version of the movie.

Seemingly out of nowhere, Disney not only announces Moana 2, but reveals that the film is arriving this November. More here.
How’s this for a surprise announcement. If you go by the rule of thumb that a Walt Disney Animation Studios movie takes three to four years to bring to fruition at the very least, then to learn of major new release with roughly ten months’ notice is quite something. Especially in the modern era of leaks and internet gossip.
Yet at its shareholder meeting overnight, Disney sprung the news that not only is a Moana 2 animated movie coming, but we’ll be seeing it this very year.
It comes off the back of two commercial disappointments for Walt Disney Animation Studios on the bounce: 2022’s underappreciated Strange World and last winter’s 100th birthday celebration movie Wish.
Moana 2 must be very welcome tonic for those who count the money around the place.

Make way! Make way! Yes, after sailing into audiences' hearts back in 2016, Moana will return. And sooner than you think. Even with the planned live-action version still in the works, Disney has opted to turn what had been developed as a series set in the world of the film into an animated sequel — and it'll be out later this year.
In an interview ahead of an investors' call, where Disney took the chance to also send word of Zootopia 2 (likely to once more be called Zootropolis 2 here because of that pesky copyright conflict with a European zoo) landing in 2025 and the imminent arrival of the T-Swift concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (now with five extra songs and the added subtitle Taylor's Version) at its exclusive streaming home of Disney+ on 15 March, company boss Bob Iger confirmed the upgrade for Moana: The Series.

See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls on Disney to bring '90s nostalgia back — specifically nostalgia for quickly-made sequels to their popular movies. After announcing plans to have as many "Frozen" movies as there are seasons in the year, the 100-year-old studio that had a pretty rough 2023 decided the solution to all its problems lies in announcing "Moana 2," which not only got a surprise announcement, but a surprise teaser trailer and a surprise 2024 release date. Moana is returning to the big screen. Disney on February 7 announced the surprise release of “Moana 2,” a sequel to the 2016 Disney animated classic.

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the news on CNBC ahead of the company’s earnings call on Wednesday.
“Moana 2” was previously developed as a Disney+ series, but it will now be made into a feature film with a theatrical release. It’s unclear which (if any) cast from the original animated hit is involved.

Moana and Maui are hitting the ocean once again. In a surprise move, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that the company will release an animated sequel to the 2016 film that will hit theaters Nov. 27. The announcement came during an earnings call in which Iger emphasized that the ship was being righted at Disney’s film and TV divisions several months after he acknowledged the company had done too much too fast in order to feed Disney+, leading to some cases of lower quality projects hitting the marketplace.
“I feel great about where we are with the studio,” Iger said when updating investors on Wednesday.
Dave Derrick Jr., who worked on the original film as a story board artist, will direct the new sequel, which is separate from a live-action remake of Moana starring Dwayne Johnson. Abigail Barlow, Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina are writing the music.

Disney Boss Bob Iger announced today that Moana 2 is coming out as a feature — this November. Iger exclaimed the news in a CNBC interview before the studio’s Q1 earnings on how the studio was turning a Moana TV series into a feature sequel. This despite the fact that a live-action version with Dwayne Johnson reprising his role of Maui from the original 2016 film is also planned for a theatrical release on June 27, 2025.
Note, Disney books the Thanksgiving five-day Wednesday-Sunday stretch with an animated movie annually. It always had a November 27 release date set for a toon feature.
“Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise,” said Iger, “and we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theaters this November.”

Margaret Qualley is ready for her Broadway debut.
The “Sanctuary” actress told IndieWire during a recent interview that she would “love to” star in a play or musical after bringing playwright Micah Bloomberg’s script to the screen. Qualley also earned an Emmy nomination for her turn as dancer and choreographer Ann Reinking in limited series “Fosse/Verdon” about Broadway legend Bob Fosse and actress Gwen Verdon.
“I love doing it, I just have never done it [on Broadway],” Qualley said. “I actually would really love to.”
Qualley is set to star in the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers biopic, “Fred & Ginger,” alongside Jamie Bell. The film is written by Arash Amel and to be directed by Jonathan Entwistle, set to track Astaire and Rogers’ career spanning 10 movies together from 1933 to 1949. “La La Land” music producer Marius de Vries will work alongside Tony-winning choreographer Christopher Wheeldon (“Mj the Musical”) and Grammy-winning songwriters...

We've known for a few years that there are dueling Fred Astaire films in development — one starring Tom Holland playing the legendary entertainer, the other featuring Jamie Bell as Astaire and Margaret Qualley as Ginger Rogers. Both are seeing some new moves today, with The Hollywood Reporter bringing word that the Holland film now has Paddington's Paul King as director and Lee Hall re-writing the script.
The untitled, Holland-starring film has Lee Hall also now on board as writer. It'll focus on Astaire and his sister, Adele Astaire. The two were inseparable for more than 20 years, moving out of a simple Midwestern vaudeville act in the early part of the 20th Century to Broadway and London’s West end in the 1920s. Adele Astaire was initially the face of the act but eventually, Fred Astaire’s consummate stage skills eclipsed hers. The duo parted in 1932 when his sister married, which was a blow to Fred,...

Nearly two months after it began, the legal feud between Netflix and the creators of the ‘Unofficial Bridgerton Musical‘ has been resolved. After accusing Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear of profiting off Bridgerton “without permission,” the distributor of the Regency romance has reached a settlement with the two songwriters.
Barlow and Bear’s response to the suit was due on September 22, but that retort never arrived. Instead, Netflix dropped the case a day later. In a brief notice, the streamer agreed to dismiss its legal action “with prejudice,” which means the lawsuit cannot be refiled in the future. Though the notice didn’t say why the case had been dismissed, Variety confirmed that the two parties were able to reach a settlement.

Netflix is no longer pursuing a copyright lawsuit against the creators of The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical.
Emily Bear and Abigail Barlow, the makers of the musical, and the streamer reached a deal to resolve the suit after the duo canceled a Sept. 20 performance of the musical at Royal Albert Hall in London, according to a court notice filed on Friday. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.
In July, Netflix sued for copyright infringement over a for-profit show at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. It claimed that Bear and Barlow forged ahead with the performance despite repeated warnings that it wasn’t authorized, calling their work “blatant infringement of intellectual property rights” amid an effort “to build an international brand for themselves.”

Update, 6:27 Pm: “There is nothing on Earth quite so envied as a diamond,” says Lady Whistledown in the first season of Netflix and Shonda Rhimes’ blockbuster Bridgerton. The Julie Andrews voiced character is rarely wrong, but she might want to recognize the value of an avoided legal action also.
To that, the scheduled performance of the controversial Unofficial Bridgerton Musical didn’t occur in the UK this week, and Netflix’s copyright lawsuit over the work is now over too.
“Plaintiffs Netflix Worldwide Entertainment, LLC and Netflix Studios, LLC hereby dismiss this action with prejudice,” said the streamer in a filing in federal court in Washington DC today (read it here) Those last two words of “with prejudice” in the brief notice of voluntary dismissal means that this matter is closed and done. So no Albert Hall performance on September 20, and no more lawyers to bill by the hour.

Netflix has settled a copyright lawsuit that it had filed against the creators of “The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical.”
The streaming service dismissed the suit on Friday against Emily Bear and Abigail Barlow, the creators of the musical. Though the court filing did not say so, a source confirmed that the suit was in fact settled. The pair had earlier canceled a performance of the musical at Royal Albert Hall in London, which was to take place this week.
Netflix sued in July, alleging that Barlow and Bear had infringed on its copyrights by putting on a for-profit stage show at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The service argued that their conduct “stretches ‘fan fiction’ well past its breaking point.”
The pair had gained fame on TikTok when they began releasing songs based on the TV series. They eventually put out a full album on Spotify.

Since its debut on Netflix in December 2020, "Bridgerton" has taken the world by storm. Based on the bestselling book series by Julia Quinn, the acclaimed show broke records on the streaming giant by becoming the most-viewed series in its first 28 days, with over 627 million hours of viewing (breaking the show's own season on record). "Bridgerton" shows no signs of slowing down, either. Following a dramatic season two, Netflix renewed the Shondaland series for both a third and fourth season. Production for season three is already officially underway as of July 20.
"Bridgerton"'s sheer popularity has inspired countless social media offshoots, ranging from fan edits to TikTok videos and even musicals. While most fans have made their "Bridgerton"-focused content for their own fun and amusement, others, like musicians Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, better known as Barlow & Bear, have taken their love of the series to a different level.

The curtain may be closing on TikTok's favorite musical.
Netflix, which has distributed two seasons of Shonda Rhimes' romance series Bridgerton, has filed a lawsuit against the creators of the 'Unofficial Bridgerton Musical' that went viral and won a Grammy Award earlier this year. The suit alleges that Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear borrowed the IP of the steamy Regency Era sensation and turned it into a live stage show despite "repeated objections" from the streamer.
Like so many other TikTok stars, Barlow and Bear rose to prominence during the pandemic, when they charmed audiences with captivating songs inspired by Bridgerton's characters and plot. Their tribute to the series was a viral hit, especially within TikTok's musical theater community. Millions of views later, Barlow and Bear completed a 15-song 'Unofficial Bridgerton Musical' album, which propelled them to victory in the Best Musical Theater Album category at the Grammys.

Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear are being sued by Netflix for staging “for-profit” performances of their Grammy-winning Unofficial Bridgerton Musical.
In a lawsuit filed on Friday to a D.C. District Court, the streamer alleges that the duo and their company Barlow & Bear have profited off of “valuable intellectual property from the Netflix original series Bridgerton” through a July 26 staged performance of the musical at the Kennedy Center and a future performance set for the Royal Albert Hall in London, as well as “their own line of Bridgerton-themed merchandise.”
“Bridgerton reflects the creative work and hard-earned success of hundreds of artists and Netflix employees,” the suit says. “Netflix owns the exclusive right to create Bridgerton songs, musicals, or any other derivative works based on Bridgerton. Barlow & Bear cannot take that right — made valuable by others’ hard work — for themselves, without permission. Yet that...

Netflix is cracking down on “The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical,” a popular fan-made musical based on the hit period romance. The streaming giant filed a suit against songwriters Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear in a U.S. district court in Washington D.C., where they recently mounted their for-profit stage musical based on the popular album.
“The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical” began as a viral TikTok project, with Barlow and Bear writing songs for an imaginary Broadway musical based on the show. They soon compiled those songs into “The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical Album,” which rose to the top of the iTunes charts and won a Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album. More recently, they mounted the musical as a full stage production which reportedly uses dialogue lifted directly from the show.
As the project continued to pick up publicity over the past year, many wondered why Netflix didn’t intervene to stop it sooner.

Netflix Sues Grammy-Winning Creators Of The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical For Copyright Infringement
We can all agree that a deadly game of red light, green light has lots of theatrical potential, but that doesn't change the fact that somewhere in the world, a very talented musician is slamming the brakes on their plans to write "Squid Game! The Musical." Sorry Broadway — Netflix isn't too keen on musical fan works at the moment, especially those with the potential to make money. Per Reuters, the streamer is now in the process of suing Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, the Grammy-winning duo behind the internet sensation, "The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical."

The team behind an unofficial “Bridgerton” musical is being sued for infringement by Netflix in a Washington, D.C. U.S. District Court.
Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, the songwriting team behind the project, initially developed the musical on social media. The duo went on to score the No. 1 slot on iTunes U.S. pop charts and even won a Grammy this year in the category of best musical theater album.
Netflix alleges that it made “repeated objections” against the team as they planned to mount a live stage show of the project. “The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical Album Live in Concert” performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. earlier this week, selling out the venue with ticket prices that ranged up to 149.
The stage show reportedly featured more than a dozen songs that involved exactly copied dialogue, character traits, expression and other elements from “Bridgerton.”

The creators of the Grammy Award-winning "Unofficial Bridgeton Musical" are being sued by Netflix, as first reported by Deadline. Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear's hit musical began as a TikTok collaboration that turned the show's first-season storylines into a 15-song album full of romance and yearning. At first, Netflix was supportive, but after Barlow and Bear performed "The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical Album Live in Concert" at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC in late July, the streamer accused the songwriting duo of copyright infringement.
When Barlow and Bear's album was just a fan tribute on TikTok, Netflix tweeted about the musical from the company's official account. However, now that the songwriters are profiting from the music, the streamer alleges they're infringing on the company's rights to all things "Bridgerton."

Netflix is suing the songwriting team behind the unauthorized “Bridgerton” musical for infringement, court documents filed Friday in a Washington, DC US District Court revealed.
Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear created the homage to the smash hit Netflix show in 2021 with a series of music videos posted to TikTok. The record streamed more than 45 million times, hit No. 1 on iTunes US pop charts, and won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album in 2022.
Netflix initially supported the idea when it debuted as a free online tribute. The problem between them began on July 26, 2022, when Barlow and Bear staged what Netflix says is a “for-profit” performance of “The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical Album Live in Concert” for a sold-out crowd at the Kennedy Center, with tickets ranging up to 149 each.
