Kerry was an award winning child gymnast but at 13 years old, she fell from a tree and broke her back, resulting in being paralyzed incompletely from the waist down. Kerry studied at West Calder High School, but after her injuries, authorities wanted to transfer her to a special school for the disabled. Kerry fought against this move and crammed 2 years physiotherapy into just 6 weeks, allowing her to remain at the school. She went on to be awarded the UK "Child of Achievement Award" and described this as "the proudest moment".
