Streaming exclusively on Screambox beginning today, Project Wolf Hunting is a hyper-violent South Korean genre bender that packs action, sci-fi, horror, and thriller aspects into a two-hour splatterfest of epic proportions.
It’s a wholly original production, but here are six movies that writer-director Kim Hong-Sun (The Chase) evokes with Project Wolf Hunting.
1. Con Air
Although the plots ultimately diverge in drastic ways, Project Wolf Hunting‘s basic premise echoes that of Con Air. The 1997 action thriller takes place on a maximum security transport plane that’s been hijacked by criminals in an effort to escape. Project Wolf Hunting transplants the action to a cargo ship, wherein convicts coordinate an escape attempt while being transported.
2. The Raid
Project Wolf Hunting‘s merciless violence brings to mind The Raid. While few movies live up to the 2011 Indonesian film’s revolutionary action set pieces, Project Wolf Hunting‘s bone-crunching brutality is supplemented by literal tons of gore.

Project Wolf Hunting begins with a mass return of Korean criminals captured in the Philippines. As they’re being led through Seoul airport somebody with a grudge against one of them detonates a suicide bomb killing himself, his target, and everyone else in the vicinity. To avoid a repeat of this, the next group is to be transported on the Frontier Titan, a specially fitted out cargo ship and delivered to a pier in Busan harbour to which the public doesn’t have access. I guess simply flying them into a military base never crossed anyone’s mind.
The Frontier Titan leaves Manilla with forty-seven criminals, twenty guards, two medics, and the ship’s crew. At least that’s what they think they’re leaving with because...

Get ready for no-holds-barred South Korean action-horror, Project Wolf Hunting, coming to Blu-ray, DVD & Digital from 10th April 2023
Buckle up for this brutal, bloody and no-holds-barred South Korean action-horror from Kim Hong Sun, the veteran director known for The Chase. Following its world debut at TIFF Midnight Madness in 2022, it has quickly become a firm global festival favourite, having also been selected for Sitges International Film Festival, Leeds International Film Festival and San Sebastian Horror & Fantasy Film Festival.
During an extradition from the Philippines to South Korea, a group of dangerous criminals unite to stage a coordinated escape attempt from their floating prison. As the jailbreak escalates into a bloody, all-out riot, the fugitives and their allies from the outside exact a brutal terror campaign against the special agents onboard the 58,000-ton cargo ship. But the prisoners aren’t the only ones waiting to rise from the darkness – the freighter...

Streaming platforms and a return to physical film markets helped boost exports.
South Korea’s film exports totalled $71.5m in 2022, up 47% year-on-year, according to a report from the Korean Film Council (Kofic).
Sales of completed Korean films made up the majority of this figure at $71.4m, up 66% year-on-year – the second highest record since 2005’s $76m.
The report states that film markets transitioning back to their physical versions helped revive exports as face-to-face meetings became possible again. Global streaming platforms also added to heightened interest in Korean content, which resulted in more favourable conditions.

Korea’s most wanted escape their handcuffs on a cargo ship back to the motherland but find they are not alone in bloody thriller
If you had a pound for every slashed jugular and staved-in cranium in this Korean horror-thriller, you would probably have more than the film’s entire budget. This seems to have been mostly spent on supplies of fake blood almost copious enough to run the sprinkler system on Frontier Titan, the 58,000-tonne cargo ship travelling between the Philippines and South Korea in Kim Hong-sun’s film.
Forget Con Air; this is Con Sea, with bruiser cop Seok-woo (Park Ho-san) in charge of escorting a dirty dozen or so fugitives back to the motherland. First among evils is Jong-doo (Seo In-guk), a rapist with boyband looks and tattoos up to his jawline, who earns an early beating from Seok-woo after threatening his daughter. It doesn’t take...

Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area is a South Korean remake of the Spanish hit, La Casa de Papel, starring Park Hae-soo (Squid Game).
The series is directed by Kim Hong-sun (Luca).
Plot
The story takes off in an era when North and South Korea are reunited. A professor gathers a group of talented thieves from both regions to carry out a heist of the recently minted coin.
About the Series
In the recently added episodes we are offered more action than in its predecessor, and a more elaborate production. However, it does not impress in its premise that is quite similar, perhaps, too much.
Ideal for thriller and action fans. This Netflix series is now in its second season.

"Uncle, something weird is happening in the house." Shudder has debuted an official Us trailer for a Korean horror thriller titled Metamorphosis, from director Hong-seon Kim. This already opened in Korea last year, and is finally getting a Us release this summer through Shudder. In this new twist on possession stories, Joong-Su, an exorcist, must face a demon he tragically failed to defeat in the past when it targets his brother's family next. The horror concept involves the demon assuming the form of different family members to sow confusion and distrust. Starring Bae Sung-Woo, Sung Dong-Il, Jang Young-Nam, Kim Hye-Jun, Cho Yi-Hyun, Kim Kang-Hoon. It's a cool concept - borrowing from The Thing about how you don't know who it is, mixed with a slick possession story. Keep an eye out for this one. Here's the official Us trailer (+ posters) for Hong-seon Kim's Metamorphosis, from Shudder's YouTube: In this...
