Pop culture has long mimicked pageantry. It’s reflected in Taylor Swift’s sequined leotard, Beyoncé’s unmistakable strut, and even Margot Robbie’s twinkling grin in Barbie. The melangé of glam and controversy in pageantry encouraged The New York Times’ Lauren Herstik to co-produce the documentary How to Fix a Pageant.
“You have things like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé and Barbie this year each earning a billion dollars, or just about to get there,” Herstik tells Rolling Stone. “There’s a lot of connections between that kind of culture...

The pageantry circuit needs more than a new publicist. Sure, longstanding organizations like Miss USA and Miss Universe have always faced criticism, sparking debates over the ethics and social ramifications of judging women on their bodies. Lately though, it seems like the stage has been rife with scandal that goes a lot further than Steve Harvey accidentally announcing the wrong winner or Rachel Leviss aging out of the competition and having an existential crisis on Vanderpump Rules.
Enter How to Fix a Pageant, the latest chapter of The New York Times Presents, from director Nicole Rittenmeyer (102 Minutes That Changed America). The hourlong doc goes deep into the scandals that rocked Miss USA throughout 2022, including rigging, favoritism, multiple conflicts of interest, and sexual assault under the leadership of then-president and former Miss USA Crystle Stewart.

Fox Nation is set to release the five-part docuseries Jussie Smollett: Anatomy of a Hoax on March 13.
News of the series comes as the former Empire actor has filed an appeal of a December 2021 conviction for staging an anti-gay, racist attack on himself and then lying to Chicago police about it. The Fox Nation series will feature first-time interviews with brothers Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, who were part of the elaborate ruse hatched by Smollett in 2019.
After an investigation, Chicago police concluded that the attack was staged and that Smollett had hired the Osundairo brothers to carry out the crime. A jury eventually found Smollett guilty on five counts of disorderly conduct — one count for each separate time he was charged with lying to police in the days immediately after the alleged attack.
He was acquitted on a sixth count, of lying to a detective weeks after Smollett said he was attacked.

Smollett continues to maintain his innocence.
