Shrinking co-creator Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso) is stepping in front of the camera in Season 2.

It’s been almost three decades since “Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)” — a novelty dance track featuring rapid, part-rapped, part-scatted and mostly nonsensical rhymes — shot to the top of music charts around the world, especially in Europe. Now, the man behind the song is getting the biopic treatment.
John Larkin — better known by his stage name Scatman John — passed away from cancer in 1999 at the age of 57 — just five years after his most famous track was first released. But international production banner Trick Candle Productions has acquired the rights to his life story and is developing Scatman, set to chronicle the musician’s “wild life and positive influence.”
Written by Stephen Basilone (Community, The Goldbergs) and Annie Mebane (The Goldbergs, Shrinking), the film — which will include unparalleled access to the entire Scatman music library, as well as private home videos — will detail Larkin’s struggles with being a lifelong stutterer, bullying, abuse at home,...

"I've seen what drugged up driving can do... You know what drug I hate the most?" So they finally made a sequel to Team America: World Police! Well, not really. But this is about as close as anyone can get! A Puff Before Dying is an incredible 10-minute marionette short film, made by filmmakers Michael Reich and Mike Pinkney. Apparently this is a real PSA, but I can't find any info on for who - clearly one of the states where marijuana is legal now. (The "Federal Road Safety Foundation" is made up.) A wild night of pot and "drugged-up driving" ends in tragedy for three teenagers that happen to be marionettes. Please don't smoke and drive! Or else this! The voice cast: Annie Mebane, James Kirkland, Lola Blanc, Tashi Condelee, Michael Reich. Wherever this came from, it's amazing, I can't believe it's real. Take a hit and, uh, be safe.

George Segal’s final episode of “The Goldbergs” aired Wednesday night, followed by a short tribute to the late actor, who co-starred on the ABC comedy for the last eight seasons.
The 45-second compilation of some of Segal’s memorable scenes from the show was accompanied by the message, “We will miss you, George.” Segal died last month at the age of 87 due to complications from bypass surgery.
Segal was a series regular on “The Goldbergs” since its debut in 2013, playing Albert “Pops” Solomon, the Goldberg family’s eccentric but lovable grandfather. He starred alongside Wendi McLendon-Covey, Sean Giambrone, Troy Gentile, Hayley Orrantia, Sam Lerner and Jeff Garlin.
The Sony-produced series previously honored Segal with a card at the end of the March 24 episode, and the show’s producers released a statement at the time remembering the actor as “kind, sweet, beyond talented and funny.”

Jon M. Chu, the director of the Step Up films and G.I. Joe: Retaliation, is set to develop a new movie project called Can’t Touch This. As most of you know, that is the name of a popular song written by M.C. Hammer. The film is a high school dance comedy that will be set in the 1990s. Having grown up as a teenager in the '90s, the thought of a dance movie called Can’t Touch This made me laugh. I’m glad to hear that it’s going to be a comedy because hard to imagine a movie with a title like that could be taken seriously, unless they tackle it like films such as Dazed and Confused or American Graffiti. Those both had a good balance of drama and comedy.

Chu has already helped successfully usher the Step Up films into the realm of true franchise greatness — the filmmaker directed both Step Up 2: The Streets and Step Up 3D, ensuring a long life for the world’s most beloved dance franchise and don’t you dare argue that point with me — and now he looks to be turning his attention to a generation desperate for still more popping and locking. Deadline reports that Chu is now producing Can’t Touch This, a new dance feature that is billed as “a high school dance comedy set in the golden era of the 1990s.” Although the film’s specific storyline has not yet be revealed, it seems safe to assume that the dulcet tones of M.C. Hammer will prove to be a large part of the feature’s plot and/or soundtrack. If nothing else, we can surely expect to see a bevy of parachute...

Get your Hammer pants out. Focus Features and Jon M. Chu, the director of Step Up 2: The Streets and Step Up 3D, are teaming for a dance movie titled Can't Touch This. Chu and producing partner Hieu Ho have sold the 90s-set "high school dance comedy" to Focus Features, EW has confirmed. While Chu will not be directing Can't Touch This, he is on board to helm the sequel to Now You See Me. According to Deadline, who first reported the news, The Goldbergs producer Annie Mebane and Steve Basilone will write the script. Focus Features did not immediately return a request for comment.

Right now, G.I. Joe Retaliation director Jon M. Chu is busy with Jem and the Holograms, a big screen adaptation of the musical animated series of the same name. And after that, he'll continue a run of nostalgia with Can't Touch This, a high school dance comedy set during the increasingly old decade that is the 90s. Deadline reports Chu and his producing partner Hieu Ho have set up the project at Focus Features, returning Chu to the world of dance that launched his career in the form of films like Step Up 2: The Streets and Step Up 3D. And this one has great talent with plenty of nostalgia experience working on the script. The script will come from Annie Mebane and Steve Basilone, who have written on "Community" and ""Happy Endings." But what makes them perfect for this project is their work as producers on "The Goldbergs," the...

Exclusive: Jem and the Holograms and G.I. Joe: Retaliation helmer Jon M. Chu is going old school. He and producing partner Hieu Ho have sold to Focus Features new project Can’t Touch This, a high school dance comedy set in the golden era of the 1990s.
The teen dance milieu has been a fruitful one for Chu, who launched his career with fan favorite sequels Step Up 2: The Streets and Step Up 3D and has quickly become one of Hollywood’s in-demand studio directors. Storyline is being kept under wraps, although the title alone evokes a part of the decade that was too legit to quit. Chu and Ho originated the idea then tapped Happy Endings and Community writers Annie Mebane and Steve Basilone to script. Mebane and Basilone know their way around retro comedies; they’re producers on ABC’s ’80s-set The Goldbergs.

Community, Season 4, Episode 12: “Heroic Origins”
Written by Steve Basilone & Annie Mebane & Maggie Bandur
Directed by Victor Nelli, Jr.
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
Let’s tell the origin story of this Community review. In the cold open, when Britta compared their interlocking origins to “the classic French film trilogy Bleu, Blanc, Rouge,” and Abed responds with “No. Like something more accessible, like Unbreakable,” I wrote it down in my notes. This would be the key to this week’s review, and a perfect metaphor for the season. A show that once aspired for meaning through art reduced to something that is fun but ultimately facile. Then I woke up this morning and realized Todd VanDerWerff, using the “movies” vs. “cinema” dichotomy established in Steven Soderbergh’s “State of the Cinema” address as a framework, beat me to the punch.
He ties it to a trend he’s...

**** SXSW 2013: ‘Evil Dead’ is a relentless film out to satisfy your bloodlust
It was no secret that when news of an Evil Dead remake was in works, the intitial, “Why?” was then followed by outcries from beloved fans of the original 1981 cult classic. It was made clear by director Fede Alvarez in his directorial debut that this remake was not just a quick cash out, that it strove to capture the essence of a horror movie and much of what made the original so fantastic… (read the full review)

Community, Season 4, Episode 5: “Cooperative Escapism in Familial Relations”
Written by Steve Basilone & Annie Mebane
Directed by Tristram Shapeero
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
Reviewing comedy can be a difficult proposition at times as so often it comes down to your own personal sense of humor. You can attempt to focus on story-structure, performances, characters, theme, and, if the show is deep enough to warrant such analysis, that’s usually sufficient. However, when reflecting back on “Cooperative Escapism in Familial Relations” from the team of Steve Basilone & Annie Mebane who delivered Season Three’s superlative “Introduction to Finality” as well as the relatively abysmal “Regional Holiday Music,” the problem is often that it just isn’t funny, and as far as that goes, your mileage may vary.
Which isn’t to suggest it’s perfect on all those other fronts. The group’s desire to escape Shirley’s...

To quote former Community co-showrunner Neil Goldman, “This is the Emmyiest timeline.”
Chris McKenna, a departing co-exec producer on the NBC sitcom and head scribe on Season 3′s standout time-jumper, “Remedial Chaos Theory” – an episode he calls a “labor of love” — was treated on Thursday to an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.
Here, McKenna talks to TVLine exclusively about the methods behind “Chaos’” Emmy-nominated madness, out-going showrunner Dan Harmon‘s indelible mark on the timeline-driven installment and more. He also opens up about his new gig on what might be fall’s most anticipated new comedy,...

Community, Season 3, Episode 20, “Digital Estate Planning”
Written by Matt Warburton
Directed by Adam Davidson
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
“Digital Estate Planning” functions as something of a breather from the four-part “Evil Chang” plotline that closes out the season. At the same time it serves to bring closure to Pierce’s arc, dealing with the aftermath of his father’s death in “Advanced Gay.” Giancarlo Esposito is clever casting as Pierce’s half-brother Gilbert, and his legacy as Gus Fring lends weight to his machinations in the first two-thirds of the episode. A legacy the show’s writers are clearly aware of given how frequently his avatar adjusts his glasses.
The video game conceit may seem gratuitous at first but the quest it sends the group on gives them a reason to work together and show Pierce the true meaning of friendship. It’s likely this display of...

The Weinstein Co. has won the contest for Dirty Step Stomp, a spec script by Steve Basilone and Annie Mebane that spoofs dance movies. Chris Bender, Mason Novick, JC Spink will serve as producers.
The movie will spoof such recent films as Stomp the Yard, Step Up and Save the Last Dance as well as the 1980s classics Footloose and Dirty Dancing.
The idea of the movie originated in one of Benderspink's weekly idea meetings, where everyone from the company is encouraged to come forward with ideas and opinions pertaining to articles, books, specs, pitches and the like. A month ago, TV coordinator Amber DeFrancis threw out the idea of a dance spoof movie, noting that the genre was ripe for a takedown. Andrew Mallett, the assistant to Benderspink partner Jill McElroy, suggested that a couple of his writer friends could pen the spec. Over the next couple of weeks, DeFrancis and Mallett and writers Basilone and Mebane developed the script under Novick's guidance.
