Is Denzel Washington about to replace his American Gangster co-star Russell Crowe in The Equalizer, Sony’s attempts to bring the 1980s avenging CBS series to the big screen?
Sony have pushed the proposed remake to their production shingle Escape Artists, who made The Taking of Pelham 123 remake, and just like that movie they once again have Washington “in mind” to star. The part does call for a middle-aged but sympathetic vigilante and this is definitely the sort of movie that Washington likes to be attracted to and come to think of it if he can gauge the interest of Tony Scott, this would be yet another entry in their older leading man action movies (Man on Fire, Deja Vu, Pelham 123, Unstoppable, etc).

It is hard to not enjoy a film, which uses ‘Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City’ by Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland in the starting titles. The song sets a high bar and the film clears it-something of a feat considering it stars Matthew (Mahogany) McConaughey. This is definitely worth a second look and if you have not seen it before, translates well on to the small screen.
The beginning of the film finds Mick Haller (McConaughey) go about his business and is there to very quickly determine our impressions of the main characters. Haller is sharp, businesslike and comfortable with complexity and with getting the most for himself. We see him interact with clients (Ryan Phillippe), colleagues (William H. Macy, Laurence Mason), his ex-wife (Marisa Tomei) and associates and we can understand this man has a past. A

Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Marisa Tomei, Ryan Phillippe
Director: Brad Furman
The Scoop: Based on the novel of the same name by crime writer Michael Connelly, this doesn't actually have anything to do with Abraham Lincoln's years as a lawyer. Sorry. Despite the obvious connotations, this one is actually about a lowbrow lawyer (McConaughey) who runs his practice out of a Lincoln Town Car. Phillippe is his client, who has more secrets than answers, many of them involving Tomei.
Special Features: Featurettes, deleted scenes, interviews

The new wave of post-Stieg Larsson novels beats the Americans at their own genre. Bryan Curtis on Jo Nesbø's The Snowman, whose hero, Harry Hole, isn't so much Norwegian as full-blooded American.
The Scandinavians did it. They walked into a Barnes & Noble in broad daylight and bumped off the American crime writers. How'd it happen? The purring new thriller The Snowman, by Norwegian writer , provides a clue.

The Snowman is set in Oslo. Unlike Dashiell Hammett's Poisonville, Oslo doesn't have evil oozing out of the sewer grates. Norway, one character notes, has never produced a serial killer. Then married women start turning up dead in the snowdrifts, and Inspector Harry Hole hops on the trail.
