It’s been three years since Katy Perry lit up the Super Bowl halftime stage with her colorful medley of pop songs (pre-Witness), and one of her backup dancers – now known as Left Shark – became a dominant meme on social media.
In a recent interview with NPR, Bryan Gaw, the man inside the shark suit, spoke out for the first time about what happened on that very public stage to make him seemingly flail about off-beat from Perry and his fellow shark.
"So there's a set choreography," Gaw told NPR.

"Left Shark" finally speaks! Katy Perry had performed at the 2015 Super Bowl halftime show with two backup dancers wearing shark costumes. The person on the viewers' right danced in sync while the person on the left...well, they were more of a free spirit. Naturally, "Left Shark" was somewhat mocked, but also became the Internet's hero. Three years ago, before the New England Patriots beat the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl Xlix, Katy Perry performed “Teenage Dream” at halftime with two backup dancers dressed as sharks. Left Shark (he’s really on stage right) charmed audiences with his… we’ll say “interesting” dance moves. After before an instant celebrity, the famous fish dodged the media, but now Bryan Gaw, the dancer inside that Left Shark costume, revealed to NPR’s David Greene that his flailing was...

On Sunday night, Katy Perry soared across the sky like an NBC PSA, Marshawn Lynch went into "Beast Mode," and the Patriots took home another Super Bowl title. Yes, these oddly endearing felt monsters stole the show, but it was the left finned dancer who truly soared.
