Out of the hundreds of meals Padma Lakshmi experienced during her 19-season run on “Top Chef,” one stands out as her favorite.
“There was a great episode with Charlize Theron in Texas [Season 9],” Lakshmi told TheWrap. “We gave the contestants this wonderful challenge, which was to pick a fairy tale and illustrate it in all its wonder, horror, beauty, joy and, of course, deliciousness on the plate. And it was really wonderful because it unleashed such a sense of imagination and creativity and all of our chefs and that’s really what you want to see.”
“I remember that Grayson gave us a black chicken and left the chicken foot on there and it looked so sinister. And it was delicious,” she recalled. “Paul Qui had a bloody handprint in the middle of his dish made of beet juice and all these delicate vegetables and flowers around. He showed that murder...

What do chefs do after-hours? Why, have underground cooking competitions, of course. And Esquire Network's "Knife Fight" is ready to bring them to TV.
Hosted by "Top Chef" Season 2 winner Ilan Hall, and premiering Tuesday (Sept. 24) with back-to-back episodes, "Knife Fight" features Hall's friends gathering at his downtown La restaurant, The Gorbals, competing head-to-head, making at least two dishes in one hour from a combination of two to three secret ingredients.
That's not all the pressure on the competing chefs, however. While they're cooking on the fly, they're also heckled by a rowdy crowd made up of friends, neighbors and celebrities, food professionals and die-hard foodies who serve as judges and timekeepers for each bout.

The newest season of Top Chef Masters started last week, and Top Chef New Orleans, the show's 11th season is slated to run this fall. We've got Top Chef on the brain, and our thoughts traveled, as they always do, to hierarchy.
Let's be brutally honest -- some Top Chef winners were just better than others -- both in the dishes they made under intense pressure on-camera, and in their ability to just act like a human being toward the people around them. We know that emotional tenderness doesn't always belong in a restaurant kitchen, but there's a difference between acting like a tough competitor and acting like a garbage-y person. It should also be said that anyone who can manage to cook something edible under those conditions without setting the whole kitchen on fire out of either carelessness or rage has earned quite a bit of our respect. If you've ever watched an episode of "Epic Meal Time," you know that good taste and portion control are not central themes. We'd be silly to expect anything different from the show's spinoff program, "Epic Chef," which pits actual chefs against one another in a gross battle of unconscionable proportions.

Thomas Keller, Grant Achatz, and other celebrated chefs are getting into the quick-and-dirty game of pop-up restaurants. Tien Nguyen plans your four-star meals before it's too late.
Getting a seat at a pop-up restaurant-one of the biggest food trends of 2011-might not be as difficult as scoring a seat at Rao's, but it's close. Nationwide, chefs are using temporary restaurant spaces to experiment and create entirely new dining experiences, only to shut down or change menus after only a few days or months. Because what pops up must pop down, access to these unique dining experiences will be highly limited, and only those in the know will be able to snag a table. Here are some of the country's most anticipated pop-ups to come. Plan your meals accordingly.

Kevin Spraga was named the seventh Top Chef winner last night in the season finale of Top Chef: D.C. The show ended this season in Singapore. The producers threw Kevin for quite a loop when they surprised him with three winners from the previous seasons to act as his sous chefs. Just when he thought it was over, they brought in Michael Voltaggio from Top Chef: Las Vegas, Hung Huynh from Top Chef: Miami, and Ilan Hall from Top Chef: La to assist as he created a full four-course meal consisting of vegetable, fish, meat, and dessert dishes. After winning, Kevin said: "Yes! My dreams...

The Top Chef finale Wednesday night asked the three remaining contestants -- Angelo Sosa, Ed Cotton and Kevin Sbraga -- to whip up the most important meal of their lives. But where was the drama -- and the suspense? True, Angelo was down for the count, sidelined with a nasty stomach bug that threatened to take him out of the competition before he could hit the kitchen one last time. But Ed was coming off two back-to-back victories and seemed unbeatable, while Kevin just grumbled that he hoped Angelo would recover so he could take on a worthy adversary. In the end,...

This is a Recap of the Top Chef Season 7 Finale (aka Top Chef D.C.), originally airing September 15, 2010. If you read on, I will vomit spoilers all over you like some Informational Angelo. I should’ve known we were in for a rough episode when the Viewing Guide had a typo in it: Part 2 of the Finale picks up right where we left off, and I mean right where we left off, like seconds after Kelly’s elimination — when did this become Breaking Bad? — and Padma calls the chefs back to Judge’s Table for another surprise. Oh man, what’s it gonna be?? Maybe they’re gonna have to cook right here and now, using only their hands and what they’re wearing, and Ed’s gonna be like “I was planning for this so I kept a lobster in my pocket. I hope you die, Angelo. I have a sarcastic sense of humor.

As the season 7 finale of 'Top Chef' unfolded last night, you couldn't help but fantasize about what might have gone down in some Bravo producer's office. "Let's do the finale in Singapore," one may have pitched. "Ok, but it'll still be lackluster with this crop of chefs," countered another. "Let's bring back Mike Voltaggio and Hung Huynh and Ilan Hall and then we'll have some excitement."
Whether or not that's what actually happened behind closed doors, that's what played out on the screen and, for perhaps the first time in this seventh season, there was some palpable drama in the kitchen.

Well, Top Chef fans, we’ve finally reached the end of another season. I know many of you have bemoaned how much the last 13 weeks dragged on, but on some levels, it flew by for me. Without a deep connection to the cheftestants, and with Tiffany (Aka the only hope for a happy ending) booted just before the finale, I was freed up from the usual anxiety that comes from having a strong rooting interest. Stir in a plethora of unanswered questions (mail-order bride or not?), and I found there was even less reason to emotionally invest.
But, hey, just...

"Top Chef: DC" comes to a suspenseful close with one of its competitors taken to his sickbed, but in the end Kevin Sbraga triumphs and takes home the title.
Upon hearing that he's "Top Chef" in the Wednesday (Sept. 15) finale, he responds in disbelief, "I am?"
"Best reaction ever," observes judge Tom Colicchio.
For their final challenge, Sbraga, Angelo Sosa and Ed Cotton have to cook the best four-course meal of their lives, using all the same proteins. There's a vegetable course, a fish course (rouget, cuttlefish, cockles, slipper lobster), a meat course (pork belly, whole duck) and dessert (oh noes!).
As we already surmised, they pair up with past winners. Kevin and Angelo get the champs they want, Michael Voltaggio and Hung Huynh, respectively. Ed wants Michael also, but he gets Ilan Hall, whom he constantly reminds is supposed to be his sous chef.

No pressure, just prepare "the most amazing food" ever. The heat was on more than usual Wednesday for finalists Angelo Sosa, Ed Cotton and Kevin Sbraga on the finale of Top Chef: D.C., which featured one of those skilled 'n' cocky up-and-comers trimphing over adversity, 24-hour flues and cuttlefish. This time, each contestant was granted a champion-caliber sous chef: former Top Chef winners Ilan Hall, Hung Huynh and Michael Voltaggio. So really the big challenge there was keeping all of those massive egos in check sufficiently enough to get food on the plate. And as if coming up with four dishes, including a vegetarian plate and a dessert, isn't enough, when Padma Lakshmi tells you how...

After "Top Chef's" Emmy-winning season in Vegas, the Bravo culinary franchise took to the nation's capital to up the stakes.
"Top Chef: DC" concludes its seventh season on Wednesday, Sept. 15 in Singapore, where finalists Angelo Sosa, Ed Cotton and Kevin Sbraga vie for the coveted title, money, prestige and of course, lovely Kenmore appliances.
In the all-male finale, the chef'testants appropriately get help from all-male former champions: Hung Huynh, Michael Voltaggio and Ilan Hall.
Let's break down how each has done this season thus far:
Angelo Sosa - The New Yorker specializes in Asian cuisine, which is why the Singapore finale has particular appeal (and pressure) for him. He's won two elimination challenges and a whopping four quickfires. He's stumbled a bit lately, and his rather cocky perfectionism has rubbed some the wrong way. No one can doubt his passion for food though.
Ed Cotton - This Queens...

We're done licking our wounds from the loss of Tiffany last episode, and ready to move forward now that "Top Chef" is holding its finale in Singapore.
You can read the full recap with all the details here on Zap2it, but we just wanted to chew the fat in a meandering way on what was an exciting but somewhat unsatisfying episode, mainly because of Ed's attitude.
At this point, we're not really thrilled with the Final Four contestants for various personality reasons, but at least they can all cook. Our absolute adoration of Asian cuisine makes us admittedly biased toward Angelo. Yeah, we had to get over his personality quirks from earlier on, but his passion for what he does is apparent.
Having the finale in Singapore is brilliant. "Top Chef" fans are no doubt a worldly bunch, and we're so psyched to be whisked away to this bustling food-centric place,...

Top Chef season 2 runner-up and resident villain cum douche bag Marcel Vigneron will find himself and his hair back on the small screen soon after SyFy picked up Marcel's Quantum Kitchen, a sort of geeky cooking show that follows his new catering and events company as it takes a scientific approach to cooking via molecular gastronomy technology, which is supposedly the hottest thing now.
Vigneron, now 30, was runner-up behind Ilan Hall on the sophomore run of Top Chef. He's not exactly a fan favorite, and he can be whiny and annoying. Apparently, he is also a molecular gastronomist, which, says trusty Wikipedia, studies the physical and chemical process that happen in the process of cooking. For instance, how different cooking temperatures affect eggs.

An inescapable trend in 2009, especially for city-dwellers, is that of the food truck. Here in New York we're quite accustomed to chuck wagon chow, consumed while sitting on street corners using expertly developed balancing skills. A few mobile kitchen innovators stepped up the quality and added the word "gourmet" to their offerings and voila, a nationwide obsession was born. And being in a recession didn't hurt the usually cheap eats either. Then came the problem of how to find your favorite mobile eatery. Enter Twitter and aggregator sites like the recently-launched RoamingHunger.com, the first nationwide food truck tracker. The site currently lists more than 200 trucks in eight cities, including the usual suspects (L.A., New York, San Francisco) and a few less common locales (Portland, Seattle, Pittsburgh), with more to come as users suggest favorites to the site."Over the last six to eight months there's been an exposion of street food options,...

Bravo cooked up solid numbers for the second-season finale of "Top Chef" on Wednesday night.
A series-high 3.9 million total viewers tuned in to 10-11 p.m. episode to see Ilan Hall take top honors in the competition show, according to Nielsen Media Research. That was good enough to make it the No. 1 cable telecast for the night.
Bravo also touted the fact that the "Chef" finale beat ABC's "Primetime" in the time slot in adults 18-49 (2.9 million vs. 2.7 million).
Compared with the first-season finale in May, "Chef"'s finale Wednesday night was up 157% in total viewers (3.9 million vs. 1.5 million) and up 185% in 18-49 (2.9 million vs. 1 million).
Meanwhile, new series "Top Design" debuted at 11 p.m.-midnight Wednesday, averaging 1.8 million total viewers and 1.3 million in the 18-49 demo. While that marks a significant dropoff from its "Chef" lead-in, "Top Design"'s debut stands as the highest-rated series premiere in Bravo history.
