Movies about the infamous French military commander Napoleon Bonaparte have always been massive undertakings. After all, the wars and battles he unleashed were some of the biggest and deadliest in European military history. You can't exactly be frugal when adapting these battles to the big screen, and since they're such a significant part of Bonaparte's legacy, you shouldn't even think of skipping them. This is partially why Stanley Kubrick's biopic of the commander wound up in development hell and never found its way out during his lifetime.
However, it seems Ridley Scott has finally done what was previously thought to be nearly impossible: He has directed a biographical action epic based on Bonaparte's life, simply titled "Napoleon," and it is coming out later this year. Starring Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix as the commander, it marks the actor's first collaboration with Scott since their acclaimed team-up on 2000's "Gladiator." While...

Audiences are ponying up for “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” which is projected to lead a quiet Super Bowl weekend at the domestic box office.
The third “Magic Mike” entry earned roughly 4.1 million in opening day and Thursday preview screenings, with industry sources projecting a debut around 8 million. Warner Bros. itself isn’t reporting numbers.
There are a few question marks surrounding the debut of “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” which is receiving a limited release in 1,500 North American locations. Though the film was commissioned for an HBO Max release, Warner Bros. swerved to go theatrical — the studio did the same for its comedy remake “House Party” in January, which also opened in less than 2,000 theaters and has earned a slim 8.8 million.
While “Last Dance” is making a bigger splash than “House Party,” it’ll finish with an opening down from its 2012 original (39.1 million) and 2015 sequel “Magic Mike Xxl”. Critical consensus is...

“No woman wants to be suffocated by testicles.” This pearl of wisdom comes from Salma Hayek Pinault who plays grand dame Maxandra in Magic Mike’s Last Dance, the third (and presumably final) instalment in Channing Tatum’s stripper franchise. Maxandra has coaxed our hero, down-on-his-luck former stripper Mike Lane (Tatum), to London with the promise of 60,000 and the opportunity to direct his very own erotic dance show. But Maxandra’s vision, which quickly becomes Mike’s vision, too, is one of relatively chaste refinement. The aggressive air-humping and up-close gyrating of the former films are – for the most part – nowhere to be seen, replaced by ballet and interpretive modern dance.
But is “suffocation by testicles” not the very heart and soul of the Magic Mike franchise? Is that not the joy? Maxandra talks a good game about how liberating it is to be on the receiving end of a Mike Lane lap dance.

Salma Hayek has revealed that Channing Tatum almost “killed” her during a Magic Mike lap dance.
The pair star in the third and final film in the series, Magic Mike’s Last Dance, which sees Tatum’s lead character team up with a wealth socialite (Hayek) to bring a stage show to London.
In one scene, Mike showcases his lap dancing skills for Hayek’s character, which, according to the star, almost ended fatally.
“You know, this one part that’s not in it is where I’m upside down, and my legs had to be somewhere,” she said during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday (30 January).
“But upside down, one loses sense of direction, and I didn’t do what I was supposed to do. So in the rehearsal, I went like, head down, almost hit my head.”

While the exact premise of “Last Dance” had been kept under wraps, both Tatum and Soderbergh have teased information about the sequel.
“I want it to be the Super Bowl of stripping,” Tatum told People about “Last Dance.” “I want dancing like we’ve never been able to do in the other two movies, because we had to be honest to what the reality of that world is,...

Either Channing Tatum’s Mike Lane is pregnant, or Salma Hayek is learning to read a new form of brail in the new Magic Mike’s Last Dance image. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, dollars will rain, and junk will swing like a pendulum when the Steven Soderbergh-directed sequel gyrates its way into cinemas. Initially, Magic Mike’s Last Dance was destined for HBO Max. However, Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav is salivating for box office Somalians and wants Tatum and company to shake what their mama gave them on the big screen. The third chapter of the Magic Mike franchise oils up in theaters on February 10, 2023, the same weekend as the Super Bowl! How much ball handling can the public take in one weekend? We’ll soon find out.
The threequel plot details are wrapped tighter than Tatum’s skinny jeans fresh from the dryer. Still,...

Warner Bros on Friday unveiled a first-look photo for its third and final Magic Mike film, Magic Mike’s Last Dance, reuniting Channing Tatum with director Steven Soderbergh. See it below.
Magic Mike is a film franchise centered on the world of male stripping, which the pair launched with the 2012 film of the same name. Pic was followed up by the 2015 sequel Magic Mike Xxl, directed by Gregory Jacobs, with the two films collectively grossing nearly 286 million at the global box office. They at the same time spurred the creation of the popular stage show Magic Mike Live, which launched in Las Vegas before expanding to London, Berlin and other major cities, including others in the U.S.
Specifics as to the plot of Magic Mike’s Last Dance have been kept under wraps thus far. But Tatum will be joined in the film by returning cast members Salma Hayek Pinault and Caitlin Gerard,...

This article contains House of the Dragon spoilers through episode 8 and some light spoilers for Fire & Blood.
In House of the Dragon‘s fifth episode “We Light the Way,” the beleaguered king of the Seven Kingdoms Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) poses a question to his Lord Hand Lyonel Strong (Gavin Spokes).
“Will I be remembered as a good king, Lyonel?” Viserys asks.
The time to answer that question is perhaps not in that moment. Viserys is sickly and tired after his journey back to King’s Landing from Driftmark. Lyonel, ever the faithful friend and confidante, seems to recognize as such and deflects the query. The quality of any given monarch cannot be properly assessed until their reign is over and the various maesters and historians get their learned hands around their story. No one will know if you’re a good king until you’re dead and gone.

House of the Dragon is losing producers as quickly as it's losing cast members. Jocelyn Diaz, who served as an executive producer on the first season of the Game of Thrones prequel series, will not return for season two, according to Deadline. Diaz, whose previous producing credits include the 2016 documentaries America Divided and Serena, had a one-year deal with an option for a second, according to the outlet, which is not being picked up. Her exit comes just two days after an explosive episode of House of the Dragon on Sept. 25, which saw three cast members—Laena Velaryon (Nanna Blondell), Harwin Strong (Ryan Corr) and Lyonel Strong (Gavin Spokes)—meet their...

House of the Dragon viewers were reminded of a certainGame of Thrones character in the prequel’s latest episode.
Sunday night’s (25 September) episode of the spin-off series moved the story on in rapid fashion, jumping forward 10 years in time.
Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke officially succeeded Milly Alcock and Emily Carey as Princess Rhaenyra and Queen Alicent respectively, and the episode revealed that, in the space of a decade, the former friends’ relationship has completely eroded.
If there was any chance of them ever reaching a truce, though, Larys Strong (Matthew Needham) shot it down in chilling fashion.
*Spoilers follow – you have been warned*
The episode filled viewers in on the fact that Larys’s brother Harwin (Ryan Corr) had fathered Rhaenyra’s children, despite her marriage to Laenor (John Macmillan). The identity of their father was an open secret in King’s Landing, and led to a fight...

Tolstoy once wrote that “all happy families are alike, but every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way”. It is a credo that George Rr Martin, author of the Game of Thrones series, carried through into his novels. And here, in the first episode where House of the Dragon takes a significant jump forward in time, the mantra is as true as ever. This is now the story of three, deeply unhappy, families.
Family affair
The first of these families is headed by Princess Rhaenyra (now played by Emma D’Arcy) who has just given birth for the third time. Her sham marriage to Laenor Velaryon (John Macmillan) has necessitated the procreational skills of Ser Harwin Strong (Ryan Corr), eldest son of the Hand. “Healthy?” she asks the midwife, as the baby arrives. “Kicking like a goat, Princess,” the woman replies, earthily.
But the child, (fake) father and mother are...

This article contains spoilers for "House of the Dragon" episode six.
For all of the politicking, backstabbing, and violence in "House of the Dragon" thus far, there hasn't been a clear villain. The two women at the center of the tale, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) and Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy), are both presented as complex figures that are neither entirely good or evil. Like its predecessor, "Game of Thrones," the series is interested in moral ambiguity and on the horrible things people will do in order to survive. In episode six, "The Princess and the Queen," the series' most potent, potentially terrifying villain emerges from the shadows. Larys Strong, played to perfection by Matthew Needham, is another of George R. R. Martin's secretive schemers, but he has already shown himself to be far more ruthless than Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) or Varys (Conleth Hill) could ever dream.

This article contains spoilers for House of the Dragon episode 6.
The sprawling fantasy world created by George R.R. Martin embraces the supernatural at every turn. As such, the two continents of Westeros and Essos are home to creatures such as dragons, ice zombies, and mystical red witches. And yet, there is no such thing as ghosts on Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon.
At least we think there isn’t…
Through eight seasons of Game of Thrones and six episodes of House of the Dragon, no ethereal specter has returned to the land of the living to haunt its old environs. When someone comes back from the dead in this world (which has become an increasingly frequent occurrence) they maintain the body that originally guided them through life.
Still, the lack of any real ghostly evidence doesn’t stop the people of Westeros from believing in ghostly curses,...

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of House of the Dragon."
Even in a world as sprawling and lived-in as the one featured in "House of the Dragon," we're bound to return to a few key recurring locations that we've seen before (though taking place later in the chronological timeline) during "Game of Thrones." Thus far, the action has largely stayed rooted in the festering political minefield of King's Landing, the capital city that the prequel series has fleshed out much more than we ever saw the first time around. But throughout the course of the series, we've also revisited famous castles and witnessed references to locales such as Dragonstone and even Old Valyria. Perhaps none, however, can quite compare to the legendary and uniquely "cursed" history of Harrenhal.

How quickly can an era end? Whether it’s Charlie Sheen being quietly swapped out for Ashton Kutcher in Two and a Half Men, or Henry Blake’s plane going down over the Sea of Japan in M*A*S*H , there is nothing that marks out televisual milestones like changes to the dramatis personae. Well, this week’s episode, “We Light the Way”, feels like the end of an era as House of the Dragon reshuffles its cast, just five episodes in. Say goodbye to young Rhaenyra and young Alicent: the next time you see them, they’ll be all grown up.
Marriage of Inconvenience
But, for now, things are as we left them. Daemon (Matt Smith) has been banished to the Vale where he’s greeted by his surprisingly attractive wife (what were all his complaints about?) who is less than happy to see him. “Have you at...

This article contains House of the Dragon episode 5 spoilers.
When House of the Dragon began, it was like being invited to an extended family reunion full of relatives we’ve never met. Here are five major Targaryen characters, all with silver hair; and here are also the Velaryons, each of the same silver hair, who’ve married into the Targaryens. And though they hadn’t married into the royal dynasty yet, the prospects of Ser Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) and his daughter Alicent (Emily Carey) were clearly signaled to be on the rise by the end of the first hour.
Non-book readers’ attentions were so distracted that many likely failed to pay much attention to Lord Lyonel Strong (Gavin Spokes) as the quietest advisor on the King’s Small Council. Nor have too many been concerned with his sons who’ve been around since the third episode.
That probably changed with last night’s episode,...

This article contains spoilers for House of the Dragon episode 5.
Very few things can stop a droning king midway through his prepared remarks, but as it turns out, the boldness of Queen Alicent (Emily Carey) is one of them. Arriving late and announced to a royal feast in honor of the Princess of Dragonstone and her impending marriage, Alicent pointedly enters the Red Keep’s throne room while her rapidly aging husband, King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine), struggles to stand up and give his first of likely many planned toasts honoring his daughter.
Viserys promptly forgot about all that as he sees his young wife draped in a rich emerald green gown, cutting a figure as bold as the legend surrounding Anne Boleyn, the lady and eventual queen who allegedly inspired the song “Greensleeves.” It’s also worth pointing out that Anne Boleyn was the direct inspiration for Margaery Tyrell...

HBO’s House of the Dragon season one episode five featured its own mini version of the Red Wedding. Only one person died so the bloodshed doesn’t compare to Game of Thrones’ season three episode nine, but the fates of everyone in attendance have been forever altered by the events. (Never cross Ser Criston.) Episode five also killed off a character we heard about but never got to know (Rip Lady Rhea Royce) and said goodbye to – at least for now – the ex-Hand of the King Ser Otto Hightower.
Most importantly, Queen Alicent has begun rallying those loyal to House Hightower.

Exclusive: Keeping in line with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav’s business belief that movies are destined for theatrical, not streaming, the originally conceived Steven Soderbergh-directed HBO Max threequel Magic Mike’s Last Dance is heading to theaters on February 10, 2023 — Super Bowl weekend. Warner Bros already had the date set aside on the release calendar.
There’s a window between theatrical and HBO Max, with Premium VOD in between, I understand.
The threequel returns franchise star Channing Tatum, Salma Hayek, Caitlin Gerard and Gavin Spokes. Reid Carolin wrote the screenplay. Gregory Jacobs, who directed the 2015 hit Magic Mike Xxl, returns to produce along with Carolin, Nick Wechsler and Peter Kiernan.
Tatum has had a number of films that have launched in the Valentine’s Day corridor and mid-February including Dog this year which had a massive, unheard of multiple at 4.1x, opening to 14.9 million and finaled at 61.8M. Tatum...

House of the Dragon is a bonafide hit for HBO.
The ratings are in for House of the Dragon Season 1 Episode 2, and the series experienced some growth.
One week after launching as the most-watched HBO series premiere ever, the Game of Thrones spinoff spiked 2 to 10.2 million viewers on Sunday night.
These numbers are for U.S. only, and the numbers are expected to be much higher as the weeks go on.
House of the Dragon Season 1 Episode 1, which logged 9.98 million viewers earlier this month on its first night of release, is now approaching 25 million viewers in the U.S. alone.
HBO notes, however, that these numbers are based on a HBO Max and linear telecasts, based on a combination of Nielsen and first party data.
Given that many shows typically drop in the vicinity of 10 to 15 in their second weeks, this is a huge vote of confidence in the franchise.

This House of the Dragon review contains spoilers.
House of the Dragon Episode 2
It’s long been observed (including by me in last week’s House of the Dragon episode 1 review) that the best scenes in the Game of Thrones universe frequently feature little more than a handful of well-dressed characters talking to one another in opulent rooms.
Before HBO realized that there was gold in them there Westerosi hills and upped the show’s budget to massive CGI battle levels, Game of Thrones was often content to let its characters talk things out, with George R.R. Martin’s creative dialogue making its way past capable actors’ lips. When you’ve got the storytelling goods, there’s no need to always default to nonstop spectacle.
The problem with House of the Dragon episode 2 “The Rogue Prince,” however, is that it doesn’t quite have the same storytelling goods that the show’s premiere did.

On a sandy shore, wounded men are being nailed to posts. Crabs, thousands of them, swarm over their bodies, eating them alive. It’s a profoundly ugly scene, depicting the reign of terror waged by a pirate king called “the Crabfeeder” over the seas of Westeros. Yet in the sky, the sun is shining — a distant, bright yellow coin, glowing through the smoke and mist and haze. It lends the entire landscape of carnage an eerie beauty, like something out of a dream you can’t quite decide was a nightmare or not.

After the premiere of the highly-anticipated Game of Thrones prequel, HBO has now released the House of the Dragon opening credits as the second episode of the fantasy drama aired.
Viewers will be familiar with the theme song used for the opening sequence of House of the Dragon as it was the same tune that played throughout the Game of Thrones 8-season run.
