A decade ago, director David Bruckner made a valiant attempt to get a new Friday the 13th film into production… it just didn’t happen. Years later, he did manage to reboot the Hellraiser franchise, with his version of Hellraiser getting released through the Hulu streaming service back in October of 2022. Surprisingly, a year and a half has gone by since that release and we haven’t heard anything about the possibility of a follow-up – until now. During a chat with ComicBook.com, producer Keith Levine confirmed that they are having conversations about making a Hellraiser sequel.
Levine said, “We are trying to do a follow-up and there have been conversations. I can’t exactly say where we’re at in those conversations, but Bruckner is involved in those conversations and we spent a lot of time and energy, I think relaunching that world. A lot of brainpower going into crafting the Cenobite design,...

At the beginning of every filmmaking process, artists from across the industry will come up with an initial round of sketches, mockups, and designs for what every character in the film should look like. This is usually an explosion of creativity, one that can be difficult to fully rein in. There are so many incredibly talented artists with so many fun ideas to play with. However, in the end, everything gets whittled down and one design moves forward.
In the boundlessly creative genre that is horror, every character possesses its own charms that, ultimately, we wouldn't trade for anything. However, it's always fun to see just how many different versions exist of every on-screen horror villain. Alternate designs and pieces of rejected concept art have never been more accessible in the age of the internet, whether in an artist's virtual portfolio, the pages of fully published art books, or even test footage.

A young woman struggling with addiction comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites, a group of sadistic supernatural beings from another dimension.
Ever since first seeing The Ritual back in 2017, it’s been crystal clear to me that filmmaker David Bruckner is one of the best of our time. His horror films are legitimately terrifying and manage to tackle themes such as grief, loss, and trauma in shockingly powerful ways. My favourite film of 2021 was The Night House, directed by Bruckner masterfully. On the surface, it’s essentially a creepy movie about a woman who may or may not be dealing with some paranormal, otherworldly stuff in her complexly designed house, but underneath it all, it’s really a...

A few of last year’s most notable horror movies are still without physical media releases, and that’s because they ended up being streaming exclusives. That list includes Netflix’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Hulu’s Prey, along with Hulu and David Bruckner‘s Hellraiser.
We have no idea at this time whether or not Hellraiser will be released on DVD/Blu-ray here in the United States, but we’ve learned the film is hitting DVD over in the United Kingdom.
The UK DVD release of Hellraiser (2022) arrives on March 27, 2023. As always, you’ll be able to watch the disc here in the States but you’ll need a Region Free DVD player first.
David Bruckner (The Night House), who helmed Netflix’s The Ritual as well as sections of Bloody Disgusting’s horror anthologies V/H/S and Southbound, directed the relaunch of the Hellraiser franchise for Spyglass Media,...

In director David Bruckner’s Hellraiser reboot, it’s clear that co-writers Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski were committed to representing a more faithful version of Clive Barker’s original Hellraiser text, The Hellbound Heart, than continuing any storyline already explored within the long-spanning cinematic franchise. This is for good reason: While Barker’s 1987 Hellraiser (which he helmed due to frustrations with other filmmakers failing to capture his work’s essence) is a renegade horror classic, the subsequent nine sequels are widely considered to be tepid, half-baked follow-ups. In this version of the story, a young woman named Riley (Odessa A’zion) struggles with drug […]

“Hellraiser” has risen from the depths.
The franchise, which began with 1987’s Clive Barker-directed original (based on his novella), has returned. This time, a young woman named Riley (Odessa A’zion) comes into possession of the cursed puzzle box and becomes a target for the Cenobites, ghoulish demons from another dimension, led by The Priest aka Pinhead (this time played by Jamie Clayton). It’s a terrifically smart reinvention of a franchise that has languished for far too long, aided by a whip-smart script by David S. Goyer, Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski and wonderful direction by David Bruckner (who worked with the same team on the underrated 2020 chiller “The Night House”).
TheWrap spoke to Bruckner and Clayton about what appealed to them about the property, their approach to the material and whether or not they’d return for future Cenobite-filled adventures.

For the film’s release, Bloody Disgusting moderated an insightful, candid, and exclusive conversation between David Bruckner and Clive Barker about Hellraiser. The horror filmmakers reflect on everything from the filmmaking process, Jamie Clayton‘s performance, the enduring fascination with Cenobites, the need for more female monsters, and so much more.
Enjoy this exclusive conversation between Clive Barker and David Bruckner.

Hulu’s Hellraiser has such sights to show you.
Director David Bruckner reteams with The Night House writers Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski for a new, highly anticipated installment of Hellraiser, now streaming only on Hulu.
Ahead of the film’s release, Bloody Disgusting spoke with Jamie Clayton, the actress leading the new batch of Cenobites as The Priest.
When asked how the extensive prosthetic and makeup process altered or informed her performance, Clayton said, “Oh, in a very big way. One of our first Zooms that I had with David [Bruckner], he showed me the drawings by Keith [Thompson], and I was completely blown away. When he explained to me that it was all skin, I was completely floored. Then once I started going through the screen test process and having the makeup done and seeing the suit and the whole thing; I’m sure that the footage, we haven’t even talked about this,...

So, we’re now officially a week into October. Ready for a spooky flick? Well most hardcore “horror hounds’ are game any time of the year, but this month is…special. And what better way to get “in the mood” than revisiting some iconic and shocking characters in a big reboot, though their creator calls this a “re-imagining”. Oh, and we’re not reaching back to the Universal icons of the 30s, 40s, and 50s. They skip a few decades to get into the scream kings (and queens) of the 70s and 80s. It just feels like all of them have gotten a nice new coat of gore. Hey, even Michael Meyers will be back in a week for his final rampage (heard that before). And much like Chucky,...

Based on the Clive Barker novel The Hellbound Heart, David Bruckner’s Hellraiser (2022) takes the original concepts of addiction, pleasure and pain and molds them for a Gen-z audience. However, the initial ideas get lost in translation, losing all of what makes the 1987 film, starring Doug Bradley, so fresh, fringe and meaningful. The movie starts promising enough, but by the third act, tricks, tropes and story issues pile on, and become too much to bear. However, some redeeming qualities include Jamie Clayton, the cenobite costumes, make-up, and set design.

Plot: A reimagining of Clive Barker’s 1987 horror classic from director David Bruckner in which a young woman struggling with addiction comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites, a group of sadistic supernatural beings from another dimension.
Review: The Hellraiser franchise has had to weather a lot of mediocre sequels, nine to be exact, since Clive Barker’s directorial debut unleashed Pinhead upon the cinematic world. Defining the sadomasochistic world of the Cenobites, Barker’s 1987 horror film has ranked as one of the most iconic horror creations of all time. In the decades since, multiple filmmakers have tried to deepen the mythology of the original story by giving us origin stories and alternate realities featuring the puzzle box and demonic entities. None of these films has managed to evoke the sinister feel of the first movie or capitalize on the story’s potential until now.

It’s time someone gave the Hellraiser series a proper relaunch. While it is one of the most long-lasting franchises in modern horror, most fans tend to land on there being two quality films and a handful of others that either have some odd charms or are just flat-out bad. That’s not a knock against the movies themselves or the filmmakers who created the various chapters in this ongoing saga. It’s just acknowledging the fact that this series has been a niche corner of horror for a long time, and it’s finally time that someone put together a brand-new film for a modern audience and for it to get some much-deserved attention again.
Thanks to David Bruckner, that wish has become a really fun reality full of blood, interdimensional monsters, puzzles, and pain and pleasure combined. In this new film, Bruckner and writers Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski...

It’s not likely that any review, positive or negative, will effect the reception of the latest “Hellraiser,” now the 11th addition to the cult horror franchise. Once certain properties attain cult status, its followers will delight in any offering, even if only to fuss over its ranking in the canon. Based off of Clive Barker’s 1986 novella and originally adapted by Barker in one of the great writer-to-filmmaker transformations, “Hellraiser” belongs to the freaks, punks, and fetishists who saw themselves in the S&m-inspired looks and story of unhinged sexual exploration.
Unfortunately, It’s Disney does “Hellraiser,” which — incidentally — is exactly who paid for this latest iteration the classic.
Shedding the subtitles like a cenobite’s skin, “Hellraiser” is a 2022 rebirth for the franchise, free of all the sexy subversion that got it here in the first place. It’s perfectly entertaining, using Barker’s inventive tropes to tell a solidly gory nightmare,...

Bloody Disgusting’s Hellraiser review is spoiler-free.
Hellraiser needs no introduction. Clive Barker’s feature debut, which he adapted from his novella The Hellbound Heart, introduced horror to the hellish world of the Cenobites and instantly catapulted them to horror icon status. The arbiters of pain and suffering are back in the franchise’s eleventh feature, this time with a reimagining by The Night House director David Bruckner and screenwriters Luke Piotrowski and Ben Collins. Their Hellraiser takes a more faithful approach to Barker’s works, but with new hellish sights to show you.
A cold open introduces debauched billionaire Roland Voight (Goran Visnjic) and his experimentation with the iconic puzzle box. Six months later, recovering addict Riley (Odessa A’zion) laments to her lover Trevor (Drew Starkey) that she’s strapped for cash after the latest blowout fight with her brother Matt (Brandon Flynn). Matt’s skepticism about Trevor and...

Prior to reviewing the new installment in the long-running (35 years!) Hellraiser horror movie franchise, I did my due diligence. I rewatched all 10 prior films, from the acclaimed 1987 original and its 1988 sequel through the ensuing two theatrical and six direct-to-video entries. Throughout the marathon, I took copious notes, careful to track the characters and plot developments through their many permutations.
Nah, just kidding!
Sure, I saw the first two films back in the day, and may even possibly have caught 1992’s Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth and 1996’s Hellraiser IV: Bloodline. But by the time the series went straight to home video, I happily bailed out, not being the type to proudly possess a treasure trove of horror movie memorabilia in my basement. So for all you Hellraiser aficionados out there, apologies.

Pity the poor monsters of legendary horror movie franchises: Time and familiarity and cruddy sequels render them toothless and soft, formerly ferocious animals one can now pet, their evil energy sapped by fan adoration. To be fair, there is entertainment value in the cartoonish experience of Freddy Krueger as a wisecracking quip machine, or viral videos posted by proud parents of deranged six-year-olds who terrorize playgrounds in Michael Myers costumes. There is Count Chocula.
But inevitably something is lost, and that has also been the fate of the “Hellraiser” film series, of which there were three released theatrically and seven more for the home market. As more and more sequels played fast and loose with creator Clive Barker’s thematic vision for his Cenobites — extra-dimensional entities that sought carnal experience, preying on conflicted human desires and obsessions — the quality suffered and those giddy, early thrills faded from memory. The films’ leading Cenobite,...

If you aren’t sure what a Cenobite is, David Bruckner, director of the new Hellraiser, has the answer—“It’s an interdimensional Bdsm thing that shoots chains at you from an ancient labyrinth.” It sounds outlandish but is actually astonishingly accurate.
The original Hellraiser (1987), written and directed by Clive Barker, is forever a classic horror hall-of-famer. It centers around a mysterious puzzle box that, when used, summons the Cenobites— a sadistic group of hell dwellers who take pleasure in torturing their unfortunate summoner for eternity. This new Hellraiser film will be the 11th installment of the franchise. “I think a lot of things are going to hit just a little bit different,” says Bruckner. “But you’ll find that most of what you love about Hellraiser is there in the movie, and sometimes in slightly different ways.”
While Bruckner can’t give too much away, there were a few details he could share.

A woman grieving her husband's death, an eerie, identical house in the woods with a reversed floor plan, and an entity hellbent on dragging a living person to the realm of death. These are the essential ingredients in David Bruckner's psychological horror, "The Night House," which, when combined, leads to a terrifying tale about grief, loss, and emotional trauma.
There are several reasons why Brucker's tale is haunting, which include a meticulous dedication to creating a tense atmosphere and sound design within a setting meant to confuse and disorient. However, the effectiveness of "The Night House" would be incomplete without the mechanics of the titular house, which becomes the site of horror for the protagonist, Beth (Rebecca Hall).
After Beth loses her husband, Owen (Evan Jonigkeit), to suicide, she experiences jarring supernatural events inside her beautiful, secluded home, which Owen had built for the both of them. Amid unaccounted time gaps,...

Of the longstanding horror franchises, none has been more inconsistent than Clive Barker's "Hellraiser." I can see some of you pointing out the "Leprechaun" series, but that would require Warwick Davis' gold-obsessed slasher villain to have one good movie, let alone eight. But regardless, Doug Bradley's Pinhead is a formidable screen presence who, at the very least, is responsible for being at the center of two creative pieces of mythical horror.
After "Hellbound: Hellraiser II," the series never fully recovered itself. But even when this series had its unfathomable lows, Bradley gave it his all regardless, barring the last two direct-to-dvd entries ("Hellraiser: Revelations" and "Hellraiser: Judgment"). But the time has come for new blood to take the mantle of the hell priest with Hulu's "Hellraiser." If festival reactions are to be believed, it appears that "Sense8" star Jamie Clayton has successfully revived this series from the...

Before David Bruckner made his solo directorial debut in 2017 with Netflix’s The Ritual, the filmmaker was heavily involved in rebooting Friday the 13th, first as a found footage film and then as a more conventional ‘80s reboot. But Bruckner ultimately left the project and took the indie route, beginning with the well-received Ritual and then the critically acclaimed Rebecca Hall vehicle, The Night House (2020). And now, with his Hellraiser reboot on the brink of release, Bruckner is glad that he took a longer route before directing his first franchise film.
“I wouldn’t have been prepared at the time [to direct Friday the 13th],” Bruckner tells The Hollywood Reporter. “If I’m honest, the world of Hellraiser — the themes that it explores and the visual quality of it — is something that is much more of interest to me. I think I have more on offer where that’s concerned.

Jamie Clayton is playing the iconic Hell Priest in the new movie, a fresh new take on the character played by Doug Bradley in the past.
Clayton explains in a new interview, “This film’s version of the Priest is now a woman, which takes the burden off the audience of trying to compare the performance to Doug Bradley’s iconic portrayal of this character, lovingly known by the fans as Pinhead. David Bruckner's feature adaptation of Clive Barker's 1986 novella "The Hellbound Heart" brings forth a new Pinhead, the leatherbound nail-studded horror icon formerly popularized by Doug Bradley. Written by "The Night House" scribes Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski from a story developed with David S. Goyer, "Hellraiser" stays true to themes raised in Barker's original 1987 adaptation while offering a new iteration of the soul-harvesting Pinhead, played by Jamie Clayton.
Clayton struck friendships on and off the set, often hanging out with co-star Aoife Hinds, previously known for her role on BBC Three/Hulu drama miniseries "Normal People." In "Hellraiser" Hinds is one of several loved ones in the crosshairs of the Cenobites due to her proximity to Riley, who fiddles with the shiny death box and wreaks havoc on everyone. Director David Bruckner's "The Night House" wasn't buried at the box office so much as it had the misfortune of arriving at a point in 2021 when theaters were struggling to continue their recovery from their pandemic-era lows one year prior. However, it's a horror film that very much merits your attention, all the more so if you're curious about what to expect from Bruckner's incoming "Hellraiser" movie.
Rebecca Hall, who's exceptional as ever here, stars in "The Night House" as Beth, a high school teacher who's reeling in the wake of her husband Owen's (Evan Jonigkeit) death by suicide. Horror fans comprise one of the most passionate and dedicated fan subcultures in film, with many beloved classics hailed as untouchable masterpieces. And yet, because capitalism be capitalising, some of the greatest horror films of all time have spiraled into decades-long franchises to varying degrees of success. In the last year alone, new installments in the "Halloween," "Scream," "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," and "Predator" series have all been released, with even more legacy additions on their way.
One of those films is David Bruckner's upcoming "Hellraiser" film for Hulu, the 11th film in the canon and first since the rights to the story reverted back to creator Clive Barker. Ready for a new puzzle?
“Hellraiser,” a new take on the immortal 1987 Clive Barker classic (itself based on one of Barker’s more memorably macabre stories), is headed to Hulu in October as part of the streaming service’s Halloween line-up. And a terrifying new trailer has just debuted.
The trailer moodily establishes the return of some of the most iconic elements from “Hellraiser,” including (but not limited to) the insidious puzzle box and the appearance of Pinhead and an inter-dimensional demon (this time played by “Sense 8” standout Jamie Clayton). Instead of a straight remake of the 1987 original, the new movie concerns a recovering addict (Odessa A’zion) who takes possession of the original puzzle box and must try to figure out the mysteries behind it. Talk about fighting your demons!
Development on a proper “Hellraiser” sequel has been going on since at least 2007, with several sets of filmmakers attempting...

What is it you pray for? For some of us here at /Film, we've been praying for the first trailer for the latest "Hellraiser" film for some time now, and thankfully, the Cenobites have answered. "The Night House" director David Bruckner has taken on the influential franchise started by Clive Baker for its first mainstream entry since 1996's "Hellraiser: Bloodline." With Jamie Clayton at the helm as the menacing Hell Priest, we are about to be treated to another bloody exploration into pleasure and pain this October on Hulu.
The trailer gave us the first look at what happens when people manage to solve the Lament Configuration. While it wisely cuts away from any of the assuredly grotesque results, we do get to see a hearty helping of bloodletting. Fans are also treated to glimpses of the film's redesigned Cenobites, the inner workings of Hell, and most importantly, the figure...

Hulu released an official trailer for the upcoming “Hellraiser” reboot, starring Jamie Clayton as the iconic pin-riddled villain, Pinhead.
In the trailer, Pinhead causes havoc for a young woman named Riley, played by Odessa A’zion. The 2022 reboot follows Riley as she struggles with addiction and comes across an ancient puzzle box whose sole purpose is to summon Cenobites, sadistic supernatural beings that come to Earth from another dimension. The original 1987 film saw Doug Bradley playing the leader of the Cenobites, and only in the later sequels was he then identified as Pinhead. The “Hellraiser” franchise has spanned across four theatrical films, six straight-to-home movies and multiple comic books.
The new film is a new adaptation of Clive Barker’s 1986 novella “The Hellbound Heart,” which Barker also adapted into the original 1987 film. David Bruckner directed the reboot, with Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski co-writing the screenplay from a story they wrote...
