Former Netflix Head of Comedy Jane Wiseman is joining Jane Featherstone and Liz Murdoch‘s Sister entertainment group in a newly created position as Head of U.S. Television. Based in Los Angeles, Wiseman will report to Cindy Holland, Sister’s Global CEO, and will lead the company’s U.S. television business, specifically focused on development and production of premium scripted series.
This is the second senior member of Holland’s executive team at Netflix, where she led original TV content for many years, that she has brought to Sister since joining the company in July. In October, Efrain Miron was named to another newly created position as President, Strategy and Business Affairs, with a focus on the U.S. studio and portfolio companies.
Building out Sister’s U.S. operation under Holland has been a major priority as the company is plotting further expansion and a path to profitability.

After a lengthy search for a No.2 in the U.S., Netflix’s head of Global Television Bela Bajaria has reached within the company ranks. Peter Friedlander, who has been heading up the company’s new Spectacle/Event programming department, has been named Head of Ucan Scripted Series. Brian Wright, who has been heading its Overall Deals department, will exit.
In addition to having the drama and comedy teams, led by Jinny Howe & Renate Radford (drama) and Tracey Pakosta (comedy), report to him, Friedlander will also continue to oversee the Spectacle/Event programming department and will now also run the Overall Deals department.
A month after Bajaria took over as VP, Global TV last September, a move that led to the departure of long-time exec Cindy Holland, she restructured its U.S. programming team, leaving the head of U.S. series post vacant.

Netflix has found its head of comedy development in former NBC scripted executive Tracey Pakosta.
The move reunites Pakosta with Bela Bajaria, her former Universal TV boss. Prior to her role at NBC, where Pakosta served as co-president of scripted programming, Pakosta was executive vice president of comedy at Universal Television.
When Bajaria set her global leadership team last month, a head of comedy was a notable omission. Bajaria has still not yet named a new head of U.S. series, a role that was previously filled by Netflix’s longtime VP of original content, Cindy Holland, who left the company in September when new co-ceo Ted Sarandos promoted Bajaria. Until that post is occupied, the execs above will report directly to Bajaria.

Following the exit of several top executives, Netflix’s head of global television Bela Bajaria has set her new global leadership team and overhauled the streaming service’s U.S. operations under her purview, creating a new overalls team in the process.
As part of the reorganization, on the domestic side, Brian Wright is now leading overall deals, original series. Wright will lead this new team, which will work closely with high-profile pacts, including Netflix’s deals with Ryan Murphy, The Duffer Brothers and 21 Laps. Wright’s previous position heading up YA/Family series will now be consolidated into the drama and comedy teams.
Bajaria has named Peter Friedlander head of spectacle/event TV, focusing on high-concept drama series with high production values, like “The Three-Body Problem,” “Black Mirror” and “Narcos.”

A month and a half after being elevated to Head of Global TV at Netflix, Bela Bajaria has reorganized the streamer’s U.S. TV operation with an increased focus on tentpole shows and getting the most from mega overall deals. The realignment also enhances the portfolios of some executives on her international bench.
The U.S. streamlining includes the closing of the Young Adult/Family series department whose duties will be absorbed by the Drama and Comedy teams. The consolidation has led to the departures of fewer than 10 members of the series content team below VP level. Brian Wright, who ran the YA/family group, will now head a new Overall Deals department, while Jinny Howe and Renate Radford will lead the drama team. Meanwhile, Peter Friedlander, who led the Genre & Thrillers subsection of the drama department, will now head a new Spectacle/Event programming department that will be separate from drama and comedy.

The new management structure puts all television worldwide under one umbrella, and follows a weeks-long period that saw several top programming executives leave the streamer.

Another Netflix original programming executive is exiting amid the ongoing restructuring at the company.
Nina Wolarsky has stepped down as vice president of original series – drama, just weeks after the departures of comedy exec Jane Wiseman and drama series boss, Channing Dungey, to whom Wolarsky most recently reported. Wolarsky had been with the company for eight years.
According to an individual familiar with that matter, Wolarsky’s decision to leave stemmed from recent changes to her role as part of the ongoing reorganization of the company’s TV operations under the new global head of television, Bela Bajaria.
Bajaria, who previously oversaw foreign-language originals for the company, was promoted to global head of television last month as co-ceo Ted Sarandos seeks to streamline original content into one global operation. Nina Wolarsky is leaving her post as VP, Original Series – Drama at Netflix. She will stay on to help with the transition; her last day will be in November.
Wolarsky was one of the first senior executive hires for Cindy Holland’s original content team, joining the streamer from Smoke House in 2012.
The departure is part of the aftershocks from the seismic shift in Netflix’s content TV triggered by the elevation of Bela Bajaria to VP Global TV by co-ceo Ted Sarandos, which led to Holland exiting the company.
The change at the top of the Netflix TV reporting structure tricked down and put Holland’s direct reports and other senior programming executives in play.
Channing Dungey, VP, Original series and head of drama, left to become chairman of the Warner Bros. Television Group.
Wolarsky, who oversaw Netflix’s non-genre drama series team under Dungey, also saw her role changing and opted to depart.

Netflix bid farewell to several senior programming executives in recent weeks — and the company’s two co-CEOs, Reed Hastings and Ted Sarandos, maintained that the turnover is business as usual for the streamer.
In September, Sarandos named Bela Bajaria VP of global TV, while VP of original content Cindy Holland was given the “Keeper Test” after 18 years at the company. Other exits: Jane Wiseman departed after a little over six years as VP of originals and head of comedy, while Channing Dungey, VP of original content and head of drama, left two weeks ago and was just named chairman of Warner Bros. Netflix has seen a number of top content execs including Cindy Holland, Channing Dungey and Jane Wiseman leave over the past few weeks – a move addressed by co-ceo Ted Sarandos on the streamer’s third quarter financial results call Tuesday.

Dead to Me has one more life at Netflix.
The streamer has renewed the dark comedy for a third and final season.
Series creator Liz Feldman will remain working with Netflix via a multi-year deal development deal.
“From start to finish, Dead To Me is exactly the show I wanted to make,” Feldman said in a statement.
“And it’s been an incredible gift. Telling a story sprung from grief and loss has stretched me as an artist and healed me as a human."
"I’ll be forever indebted to my partners in crime, my friends for life, Christina and Linda, and our brilliantly talented writers, cast and crew."
"I am beyond grateful to Netflix for supporting Dead To Me from day one, and I’m thrilled to continue our collaboration.”
Adds Netflix’s Jane Wiseman, Vice President, Comedy Series:

“Dead to Me” has been renewed for Season 3 at Netflix, which will also serve as the dark comedy’s last. The news comes about two months since the release of Season 2 back in May.
With the renewal, Netflix also announced that it has inked a multi-year deal with series creator Liz Feldman for original series and other projects.
“Dead to Me” stars Christina Applegate, Linda Cardellini and James Marsden. The show follows Jen (Applegate), a sardonic widow determined to solve her husband’s recent hit-and-run murder, and Judy (Cardellini), an optimistic free spirit who’s recently suffered her own tragic loss. When the two women meet at a support group, they become unlikely friends despite their polar-opposite personalities.

Netflix has renewed its popular dark comedy Dead To Me for a third season. Series creator Liz Feldman will return as executive producer/showrunner under a big overall deal she has signed with the streamer.
Under the multi-year pact, Feldman will also develop new original series and other projects for Netflix. Dead To Me stems from an overall deal Feldman previously had at CBS Television Studios, which produces the praised comedy and I hear bid to keep Feldman in the fold.
Dead to Me, starring Christina Applegate, Linda Cardellini and James Marsden, has been a breakout commercial and critical hit. Its first season was watched by 30M households in its first month, ranked fourth on Netflix’s Top 10 Most Popular Series of 2019 in the U.S. and scored Applegate an Emmy nomination.

“Dead to Me” has been renewed for a third and final season by Netflix, the streaming service said Monday. Along with that announcement came the news that the dark comedy’s creator, Liz Feldman, has signed a multi-year overall deal with Netflix for original series and other projects.
The Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini-led “Dead to Me” premiered in May 2019. The series launched its second season this May. You can read the description for that batch of episodes below, courtesy of Netflix.
Jen (Applegate), Judy (Cardellini) and the lies that entwine them are back. Picking up in the aftermath of that bloody backyard reveal, the irrepressible pair once again struggle to keep their secrets buried. With a surprising new visitor in town and Detective Perez (Diana Maria Riva) hot on their heels, Jen and Judy take drastic measures to protect their loved ones and each other — no matter the cost.

Just as in those 1970s-era Reese’s peanut-butter cups commercials — “You got peanut butter on my chocolate!” “You got chocolate in my peanut butter!” — comedy and drama are commingling more than ever in the age of peak TV. But such blurring of lines can cause complications when it comes to pitching and marketing series, let alone competing in more traditionally defined Emmy categories.
Streaming service Amazon used to divide its development teams into half-hour and hour-long format groups, rather than by genre. This is how comedy co-heads Ryan Andolina and Gina Kwon came to develop the dramatic “Homecoming,” a multi time-period thriller about an experimental treatment program for soldiers with Ptsd, based on Micah Bloomberg and Eli Horowitz’s podcast of the same name.
“We thought tackling this tone in 30 minutes was super groundbreaking and wanted to hopefully inspire more creators to make half-hour dramas,” Kwon says.

Netflix has canceled dark-comedy series “Santa Clarita Diet” after three seasons.
“The world had never known a ‘zom-com’ until Santa Clarita Diet, and we’re indebted to creator Victor Fresco for bringing this idea to Netflix,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement. “To their endless credit, the incredible Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant were totally game, with an uncanny knack for comedy that brought Sheila and Joel Hammond to vibrant life, even though one of them was undead. We’re grateful to Victor, Drew, and Timothy, along with fellow executive producers Tracy Katsky, Aaron Kaplan, Chris Miller and Ember Truesdell and the terrific cast, including Liv Hewson and Skyler Gisondo, and crew for three hilarious seasons for Netflix members to discover for years to come.”

Heading into the fall, multi-camera comedies are poised to have their biggest season in years on broadcast television. The Big Four have ordered eight multi-cams among them for the 2018-19 season, up from just four the year before.
The format can trace its roots back to the first days of television, with some of the biggest and most celebrated series in history being multi-cams: “Seinfeld,” “Friends,” “Cheers,” “All in the Family,” “I Love Lucy” among many others.
Yet despite their proven track record, and the fact they are notably cheaper to produce than single-camera comedies, most networks and streaming services outside broadcast have long shied away from multicams.
There are exceptions, of course, including Tyler Perry’s “The Paynes” on Own or children’s shows on Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. But beyond that, the pickings get slim. Comedy Central, for example, airs no multi-cams. The same for goes for TBS,...

Set in Chicago, Joe Swanberg’s anthology series, “Easy,” could have painted the Midwestern mecca as the sports-crazed, St. Patrick’s Day destination many outsiders see it to be. Instead, the show spends considerable time bringing women’s and minorities’ stories to life. Sure, there are some white dudes thrown in the mix, but the Netflix original comedy depicts the city as the melting pot it is, rather than the Irish stew many perceive it to be.
Creator Joe Swanberg isn’t a minority, nor, as you may have guessed, is he a woman. But he is the sole credited writer and director of every episode of “Easy.” So how is a self-described “straight white guy” able to write an episode like “Lady Cha Cha,” which features authentic insight into a relationship crisis between two women wrestling with uniquely feminine and feminist issues? (“Easy,” it should be said, is very good.
