The classic story of Alice in Wonderland can easily be tweaked into a horror tale, and that’s probably why it’s been done several times over the years. Up next is the indie horror movie Alice in Terrorland, which High Fliers Films just released on VOD and DVD today.

British horror cinema has a long-standing tradition of producing some of the best anthologies of all time, in particular in the era of Hammer, Tigon et al. So when a new anthology comes along it can be hard to separate it from history and tradition. But with Midnight Peepshow, filmmakers Andy Edwards, Airell Anthony Hayles, Ludovica Musumeci and Jake West actually tap into British cinematic history, setting their film in the formerly sleazy streets of London’s Soho – a place where, once upon a time, sex and cinema were often intertwined.

You’d think Christmas horror films up until now had covered it all. Where can you go after all the killer Santas, snowmen and elves? Well, not too long ago, Krampus was the new thing for genre filmmakers to make a holiday film about and there’s been a few decent movies on that subject – none better than the 2015 film. Last year we got a couple of great new Christmas-themed horror movies with Violent Night seeing David Harbour as Santa saving Christmas and a family and the even more original but brilliantly violent Christmas Bloody Christmas, which featured a killer robotic Santa on the loose. 2023 doesn’t seem to be the year where Christmas horror runs out of ideas because now we are getting Werewolf Santa.

Welcome to Give Me the Fear, a new Frightfest 2023 preview series hosted by screenwriter Stuart Wright.
These brief, spoiler-free interviews will – across the entire series – help you to discover the kind of knowledge and experience about how to make indie horror films that they don’t teach at film school.
After looking back at the blood, sweat and tears that went into their creative successes, I ask them one last question: If you could hand pick one person to be in the audience for your Frightfest screening, who would it be and why? I think you going to love the answers this question elicits.
This episode features Werewolf Santa (Airell Anthony Hayles), Haunted Ulster Live (Dominic O’Neill) & Poundcake (Onur Tukel)

Airell Anthony Hayles, who penned and co-directed They’re Outside, is back in the writers chair again with Heckle – a film which channels Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy by way of 80s slasher movie; an odd combination on paper but one that on-screen works remarkably well.

However last years Death of a Vlogger managed to do new things with the format, bringing in the facets and tropes of vlogging, YouTube videos and live-streaming to create a truly modern, cutting edge take on a film format that has, frankly, been played out in the 20 years since The Blair With Project hit it big.

A début feature clearly made on a shoestring budget, They're Outside is a film that has a lot of problems but is, overall, better than anyone had a right to expect. It's a piece of folk horror put together with just a handful of actors, a single apartment, a patch of woodland and little else. Writer/director Airell Anthony Hayles and co-director Sam Casserly even manage to elicit some acting from Emily Booth, a feat as yet unmatched elsewhere, in a role which presents her with a not-so-subtle opportunity to excuse some of the disasters of her earlier career.
Booth is not the star here. That role is shared by Chrissy Randall as Sarah, a bereaved, agoraphobic woman convinced that something is waiting for her in the woods outside her house, and Tom Wheatley as Max, a psychologist and self-made celebrity convinced that he can save her and capture it all for.
