Every October, we stab them with knives, killing their regular appearances and bringing them to new life with sharpened teeth, ghoulish gazes, and impossibly wide, sinister smiles. We make pumpkins into little monsters every year, but what if they came to life on their own... and wanted revenge for the years of jack-o'-lantern carvings, discarded guts, and baked seeds? Darin Beckstead's Proof of Concept for his planned feature film, Evil Nature, expertly explores this unnerving "what if?" with ample amounts of holiday humor and creature-centric horror. We've been provided with the fun and frightening Evil Nature Proof of Concept to share with Daily Dead readers, along with an exclusive Q&A with director Darin Beckstead.

Netflix is making a film called A Futile and Stupid Gesture that's about the origins of National Lampoon, and THR reports that Joel McHale has been hired to play Chevy Chase. This should be especially interesting to those who watched Community, NBC's comedy series on which McHale co-starred with Chase. Over the years, McHale hasn't been afraid to riff about Chase's dickish actions and gruff personality, but it seems like his own acerbic wit and penchant for sarcastic delivery was probably influenced by Chase's early career, so there's a nice ironic touch to this casting.
A Futile and Stupid Gesture stars Will Forte as National Lampoon co-founder Douglas Kenney and Domhnall Gleeson as co-founder Henry Beard, and it's being directed by Wet Hot American Summer's David Wain.
Kenney was the editor of the Harvard Lampoon when he met Henry Beard and Robert Hoffman, which, soon after graduation, resulted in the creation of National Lampoon,...

Yesterday came word that Sony Pictures had registered a domain name suggesting that "Spider-Man: Homecoming" could be the title of the Tom Holland-led upcoming reboot of the "Spider-Man" franchise.
Now, AICN has learned the company recently registered three more domains which could potentially hint at the title of the collaboration with Marvel. Those domains suggest the titles: "Spider-Man: Coming of Age," "Spider-Man: Greatness Awaits" and "Spider-Man: Suspended".
One difference is 'Homecoming' ties back into a specific "Spider-Man" storyline. Though it hasn't yet been revealed what source material or story might provide the plot for the new film, talk of its 1980s John Hughes-style vibe does fit.
Whatever it's called, the new film is slated to open July 2017.

It seems like forever ago, what with how quickly the news cycle constantly resets itself, that Spider-Man damn near broke the internet when he debuted at the end of the last Captain America: Civil War trailer. Since then, updates on the wall-crawler's exploits have been few and far between. But now, thanks to some sleuthing by BBC, we may have something to chew on: A title for the film that's going to serve as the launch of this all new cinematic Spider-Man!
BBC is reporting that Sony has registered a domain name that reveals the following as a possible name for the picture:
Spider-man: Homecoming
While domain names don't always reveal a film's title, a lot of the times they do. Take the James Bond smash hit Skyfall. That title was revealed via the purchase of a domain name, and Sony had a hand in that film as well.

Thanks to a registered URL and the BBC, we might now know what the stand-alone Spider-Man movie coming in 2017 could be called.
If Sony’s online activities are to be believed, the stand-alone will come with a familiar name. Marvel fans will be aware that Spider-Man: Homecoming (as indicated by the catchy URL SpiderManHomecomingTheMovie.com) is an existing Spider-Man comics arc (and an exciting one at that), which suggests several things about the movie.
Firstly, both Captain America and Iron Man both appear, making cameos from Chris Evans (assuming he survives) and Robert Downey Jr very likely. Both admitted on the publicity circuit for Avengers: Age Of Ultron that they were set to film together in Atlanta, which is the location for Spidey’s shoot, so that would make sense.
Homecoming also marked the first appearance of the Venom symbiote suit in the wake of Secret Wars in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man,...

Have Marvel and Sony settled on a title for their upcoming reboot of the "Spider-Man" franchise?
Empire Online have spotted that the studio recently registered the URL SpiderManHomecomingTheMovie.com which would suggest the film may follow the "Spider-Man: Homecoming" 1980s comic arc which boasts appearances from both Captain America and Tony Stark.
Those involved have previously indicated the new film owes a debt to the classic John Hughes films of the 1980s so this gels, but right now there's no guarantee of anything on the title front. Studios do register domain names that they don't ultimately use.
Tom Holland stars as the new Spider-Man who makes his debut in "Captain America: Civil War" in a few weeks.

One of the big draws of Ernie Cline's Ready Player One novel is that the story is stuffed with references to '80s pop culture, and the main character relies on picking up on those references in order to try to solve puzzles that could lead him to ultimate victory. But the book tips its hat to dozens of different movies, games, TV shows, and music whose rights span multiple studios, so as soon as the film adaptation was announced, fans wondered if the filmmakers would be able to wrangle all of those elements into one movie.

It looks like Simon Pegg will be joining Steven Spielberg's next sci-fi film project, Ready Player One. The actor is currently in negotiations to play a character named Orgen Morrow. Pegg will join the previously cast Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, and Ben Mendelsohn.
The story is set in a virtual world called Oasis, and it centers on a teenager (Sheridan) who finds himself competing in a treasure hunt against ruthless individuals after the game's founder dies and offers his fortune as the grand prize to the winner.
Pegg's character Orgen is the co-creator of this Oasis virtual world. I'm really excited about this movie, and I can't wait to see what Spielberg does with it. I love Spielberg's storytelling style, and I'm looking forward to seeing some of his signature magic up on the big screen again.

A prolific screenwriter who emerged from the late 1970s as a promising American film director, Lewis John Carlino wouldn’t get behind the camera following his third, and least successfully received feature, Class (1983), an item which, in passing, looks to have the stamp of John Hughes and the Brat Pack all over it. Aggravating in its considerable inconsistencies, this was the director’s first attempt to film a treatment he didn’t write or adapt himself, scripted by Jim Kouf and David Greenwalt (both writers who would move into mainstream film and television). The result is a rather wishy-washy prep school version of The Graduate, but the comparison is merely a pale echo, trapped inside a banal resolution with troubling misogynist tendencies.

Marvel and Sony's joint reboot of the "Spider-Man" franchise has cast a mysterious new role, with actress and singer Zendaya joining the ensemble.
Deadline reports that Zendaya will play "a key role" in the new Spidey flick, alongside titular star Tom Holland. Just what that role entails remains to be seen, however, since plot details are being kept heavily under wraps.
According to Deadline, it's unlikely that the actress will be playing a romantic role (like famous Peter Parker girlfriends Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy); her character's name is believed to be Michelle. Variety has some additional intel, confirming Deadline's report that Zendaya won't be a love interest, and adding that the actress isn't even considered to be a lead in the flick. Instead, Variety says, "She will, however, play a bigger part in future installments."

The "coming of age" genre of American movies can vary wildly in terms of subject matter. There are the great teenage "coming-of-age" films (see: John Hughes)- which are more poignant than standard, individual teen angst stories dealing with topics such as "Why doesn't he like me?" or "How do I get rid of my acne and become more popular?" Yet other, far more dramatic "coming of age" films center on the evolution of the United States, none more movingly than those dealing with the abolitionist period of our nation's history. It was a proud time in our history; people of conviction stood up against an abhorrent societal norm in certain areas of the country. Some people went willingly and others were dragged kicking and screaming into a new age of tolerance and growth. Yes, I know, we're still not all growed-up yet but you notice that...

Former Chicago ad man John Hughes parlayed several print and script assignments for the National Lampoon into a writer/director gig on this, the first of a veritable onslaught of teen angst comedies that gave the world The Brat Pack, a group of young actors who went on to careers of varied length after hitting it big in Hughes movies. This one was written for 15-year-old Molly Ringwald, whose headshot Hughes pulled out of a pile of submissions. It hung over his typewriter as he banged out the script. ...

In case you haven’t heard, Greg Berlanti (Arrow, Supergirl, nearly every other superhero show on television right now) is branching out his comic book empire. The producer is teaming up with Archie Comics to bring Riverdale to The CW. Over the last few weeks, casting announcements have been coming at a rapid-fire pace as the show gears up to begin production of the pilot. So far the actors playing Archie Andrews (Kj Apa), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Putsch), and Mr. Fred Andrews (Luke Perry). Still no word on who will play Veronica Lodge, Kevin Keller, or the rest of the gang yet but expect an announcement any time now! Descriptions of each character accompanied their reveals. While Archie Comics is taking their freshly — and successfully — relaunched series and translating it to the small screen, there are some key differences.

Steven Spielberg's big screen adaptation of Ready Player One has taken a big step forward with the casting of actor Tye Sheridan in the lead role. He plays the character Wade Watts in the story and he joins Olivia Cooke, who also nabbed another lead role, and Ben Mendelsohn, who was previously cast as Nolan Sorrento.

I'm finally fully caught up with George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, and I've just started reading a book I've been wanting to read for years: Ernest Cline's Ready Player One. Steven Spielberg is directing the film adaptation, which was set to go head to head at the box office with the newly-rescheduled Star Wars: Episode VIII in December of 2017. But now, following in the footsteps of James Cameron's Avatar 2, Warner Bros. has decided that maybe that isn't such a great idea, so they've moved Ready Player One from December 15th, 2017, to March 30th, 2018, where it will face off against one of Universal's rebooted monster movies. Yep, that seems like a much wiser decision.
Olivia Cooke will play the female lead in Ready Player One, while Ben Mendelsohn will play the villain. Here's the full synopsis of the book:

According to The Hollywood Reporter, actress Emma Stone is in early negotiations to star as "101 Dalmatians" villainess Cruella de Vil in a live-action film for Disney. The film will center on the villain's point of view which will be similar to Disney's approach to "Maleficent", which starred Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie.
Screenwriter Kelly Marcel is writing the current script which will be an origin story of the "101 Dalmatians" villain. The film is being produced by Andrew Gunn with executives Kristin Burr and Jessica Virtue overseeing for the studio.
De Vil was the iconic Disney villain in the 1961 animated feature, "101 Dalmatians." Actress Glenn Close portrayed Cruella de Vil in the 1996 live-action version which was produced by director John Hughes.

You know how, in between all the necessary cross-promotional opportunities, all the Marvel films at least try to be different genres? Winter Soldier was a '70s conspiracy thriller; Ant-Man a heist film; Spider-Man, apparently, a John Hughes film. According to Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy, that same process will generally hold true for the Star Wars stand-alone films. While the new Star Wars sequels, like the prequels, will focus on the extended Skywalker clan, Kennedy told Slashfilm, "the standalone films can be a wide variety of genres inside the Star Wars universe." Rogue One, then, she says hedgingly, could be seen as Star Wars' own heist film, just like the Han Solo origin story will probably be a rip-roaring space adventure, and the rumored Boba Fett film was apparently set to be a Western. But don't say the M-word around her! "Star Wars is very different than Marvel in...

As with any reboot of a major property, Spider-Man's first entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe needs to distinguish itself from its predecessors. Fortunately, even though there.s still approximately a year and a half to go until the Wall-Crawler.s next solo cinematic adventure is released, the creative minds at work already have the tone in mind to separate the movie from the rest of the pack. Director Jon Watts has previously said it will be similar to a John Hughes movie, and working off that, actor Tom Holland says that won.t feel as big or epic compared to most superhero movies. Noting how the McU.s Spider-Man reboot won.t be anything like The Dark Knight, Tom Holland compared the movie to an independent film to The Daily Beast, specifically through its exploration of Peter Parker.s life. With Tom Holland due to make his debut as the character of Spider-Man in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, it is unsurprising that the actor is busy laying the groundwork for what we should expect when he takes the lead in his own movie in 2017. Many questioned the wisdom of yet another origin movie for Peter Parker’s web-slinging alter-ego, given that it is perhaps the most regularly depicted of Marvel’s superhero stable (albeit, historically, through another studio) – but Holland is keen to emphasise that this endeavour will offer something different, echoing director Jon Watts’ assertion that a John Hughes-style film is on the cards.
“It’s not The Dark Knight. One of the special things about what we’re going to try and create is that you’re going to see the biggest independent film ever. It’s not going to be an epic thing; it...

Horror film come bizarre love story, Clinger follows high schooler Fern Petersen whose possessive high school boyfriend dies in a gruesome accident on the same night she breaks up with him. As if that wasn’t enough turmoil, things go from bad to worse when he returns as a love-sick ghost, initially intent on wooing her once more. As if that wasn’t enough turmoil, things go from bad to worse when he returns as a love-sick ghost, initially intent on wooing her once more. But the course of true love never runs smoothly, especially when you’re a headless ghost, which leaves Robert with no choice but to kill Fern so the two can be together… for eternity!

A quick story: Tonight I ended up in Times Square, and across the street from the venue I was at, the billboard would occasionally display ads for Limitless. They feature Brian just sort of standing there, surrounded by blurry light, and Rebecca standing over his shoulder. That’s it. I can safely say that if those ads were the only thing I knew about this show, I would not watch it.What these ads don’t convey is that Limitless is weird as hell. It’s so weird. I should clarify: a good weird! Consider this week’s episode, “Brian Finch’s Black Op,” as Exhibit A. It combines black-ops bounty hunters with Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, the lighthearted John Hughes film that features zero black-ops bounty hunters. From the very beginning, it’s clear that this episode is going to be different. It starts with a title card,...

Now that Halloween is out of the way (any candy left? mail it to us!) it's time to get serious about holiday programming. For some people "holiday" may suggest Christmas, but nobody puts Thanksgiving in the corner. The CW just released its list of upcoming holiday specials and they were wise enough to include one of the great T-Day comedy classics, "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," as well as more wintry fare, including "Kung Fu Panda Holiday" and "Merry Madagascar."
Here's The CW holiday schedule:

Probably one of the more overlooked Stephen King adaptations has got to be Tom McLoughlin’s Sometimes They Come Back which first aired on network TV in 1991. A film that I don’t think I fully appreciated until I got a little older (and much wiser), this revenge tale is centered around a troubled teacher (Tim Matheson) who is haunted by a gang of greasers who killed his brother and were obliterated in the attack as well, some 27 years after the tragedy. A creepy yet poignant exploration of loss and regret, Sometimes They Come Back is truly a film I think only gets better with time.
For Sometimes They Come Back, Matheson was joined onscreen by a talented ensemble featuring Brooke Adams (Invasion of the Body Snatchers ’78), Robert Rusler (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2), Nicholas Sadler (Twister), William Sanderson (Blade Runner), and Bentley Mitchum (Demonic Toys). Jon Watts received positive reviews for Cop Car, but so too did Marc Webb for (500) Days of Summer before he tackled The Amazing Spider-Man franchise with mixed results. The point is, Marvel has taken a big risk in hiring a similar type of filmmaker for their 2017 reboot, especially as many fans expected them to turn to someone with more experience in order to get this take on the wall-crawler right.
However, the director has so far been saying all the right things about his vision for Spider-Man, and his latest comments are in regards to which coming of age films have inspired his take on the character. He unfortunately wouldn’t reveal his favourite superhero movies out of fear of giving “away any of the things” which might make it into this reboot, but the following selection do offer some insight into how he plans to handle Peter Parker’s teenage years.

Taylor Swift and Ryan Adams — two very different artists who released two very different versions of the same album — sat down on what looks like a very comfortable couch to have a slightly less comfortable chat about 1989. It's kind of like when you've been talking to someone on OKCupid for a while now and things are going well and you have the usual amount of things in common, so you probably should have met up by now, so why not just go for one drink (Is Wednesday good?), and once you meet up it's clear that you do not have that much to say to each other in person, but both of you are way too polite to do anything about it, so instead you just have a random conversation about the Smiths and John Hughes movies, and after you say good-bye to them it's very clear...

Chicago – Before the days of 24/7 internet access to every form of entertainment that exists, there were eras of radical performance expression that changed the landscape of attitudes toward everything – think of The Beatles evolving music and also changing social culture. The roots of another evolution, especially in comedy, began with a modest humor magazine that brought together the right mix of anarchists and misfits. What they did would influence comedy for years afterward, and their story is told in “Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead: The Story of National Lampoon,” directed by Douglas Tirola.
“National Lampoon” Magazine was a national publication founded in 1970, that was spawned from the Harvard Lampoon, and brought together a team of 1960s-influenced comic radicals that changed the way humor was conveyed. No sacred cows existed on their pages, and the magazine also broke out into signature comedy records, stage performances and radio shows. This cottage industry featured...

A few thoughts on last night's "Fresh Off the Boat" coming up just as soon as I gyrate you into my orbit... "Fresh Off the Boat" returned this fall without the narration of the real Eddie Huang, whose public ambivalence about the show only seemed to grow over the course of the first season. But the show honestly hasn't missed that "Wonders Years" device, because the ensemble has become so well-established, and the writing so sharp, that we don't need to have everything filtered from the perspective of Eddie, young or old. It's been a really strong start to the season, with the negotiation sequence at the end of last week's "Shaquille O'Neal Motors" a particular delight. Constance Wu has been so great as Jessica that it's been easy to overlook how funny Randall Park is, and "The Fall Ball" seemed designed to remedy that. Louis' John Hughes obsession had...

While I love Jessica Huang more than my own mother sometimes, I love the kids of Fresh Off the Boat, too. I’m rooting for them. I want them to succeed. I want to see them do well in school. That’s why this episode fills me with such delight: It’s kid-centric, full of heart, and features #TaiwansFinest, Jeremy Lin.Eddie and his crew are prepping themselves for their first school dance, an exciting time for hormonal middle-schoolers everywhere. This is also a very exciting time for Louis, who never got the pleasure of putting on a silk dress shirt and sweatily clutching the shoulders of his crush in a darkened gymnasium while swaying to Tevin Campbell. When the principal calls him to provide food for the dance, he drops everything and runs home. Louis learned everything there is to know about American dances from John Hughes movies, watched...

Louder Than Bombs
Directed by Joachim Trier
Screenplay by Joachim Trier and Eskil Vogt
Norway / Denmark /France, 2015
Grief, depression, and loneliness. Norwegian director Joachim Trier’s first foray into English-language film is rife with subject matter suited for a dour art house affair. Yet Louder Than Bombs is infused with a vibrant humanism that cares for its characters and has a firm grasp of cinematic language and exceptional editing which ratchets it up a notch past a typical prestige drama. It’s too subtle, too bold, too willing to reach into a grab bag of visual styles and character set pieces to care about falling into the right Hollywood genre.
Capturing the depression and isolation of Gene Reed (Gabriel Byrne), and his two sons Jonah (Jesse Eisenberg) and Conrad (Devin Druid), several years after his wife Isabelle, a war photographer who (Isabelle Huppert) died in a car crash, Louder Than Bombs...

We chatted to Spider-Man reboot director Jon Watts about his previous film, Cop Car, and his comic book inspirations…
Jon Watts’ next job is no secret – he’ll be directing the Tom Holland-starring Spider-Man reboot, for Marvel Studios and Sony. They signed him up off the strength of his last film – his second feature, Cop Car.
Cop Car is something of a hybrid between a road comedy and a crime thriller, where Kevin Bacon stars as a crooked cop on the hunt for the two young runaways that have taken a joyride in his eponymous vehicle.
Ahead of Cop Car’s disc release in the UK (and it's available on demand now), we chatted to Jon Watts on the phone about the film, his directorial debut (the underrated 2014 horror flick, Clown) and the comic book inspirations behind his next project…

Keva Rosenfield's All American High: Revisited is something like unburying an ancient relic, or perhaps your old high school yearbook with dated wardrobe and coiffure. But it's more explicit than that. You hear the dialog, you see the 80's swagger, it has aged into a timeless record of a now exotic time. Today, this lifestyle feels so distant -- fun even. Director Keva Rosenfield and I discuss why that is, and what those comparisons mean going forward.
All American High: Revisited is just that. A recap on the 1985 documentary that followed the Finnish exchange student Rikki's assimilation into the ways of the American High School (with that Californian tinge). The original 16mm negative has been restored to 2K and reformatted for the big screen. It also includes an additional section that takes place 30 years later, where we revisit with some of the classmates.
These kids really give you access to everything.
