NBC News is planning to make Deborah Turness its new president, multiple outlets reported on Friday.
If announced, Turness, who has run Britain's ITV News since 2004, would become the first female president of a U.S. news network. Former NBC News president Steve Capus stepped down from his role earlier this year amidst rocky times at the news network's cash cow, the "Today" show.
Last month, the Los Angeles Times' Joe Flint reported that NBC News was looking across the pond for its new chief and wrote, "People close to the search said NBC News Chairman Pat Fili-Krushel is intrigued by Turness." When Comcast took over NBC Universal, it restructured the network's news properties by grouping NBC News, MSNBC and CNBC into one entity called NBCUniversal News Group, overseen by Fili-Krushel. If announced as NBC News president, Turness would report to Fili-Krushel, the first female chairman of a U.S.

Matt Lauer criticized NBC over Ann Curry‘s dismissal and says he offered to quit. At least that’s the way NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke remembers it according to a piece today from Howard Kurtz at The Daily Beast. The offer came amid Today‘s declining ratings and the messy departure of Ann Curry in June in favor of Savannah Guthrie. “If you think the show’s better off without me, let me know, and I’ll get out of the way,” Burke said Lauer told him. Burke said no way. Lauer had taken the lion’s share of criticism for how Curry left the show, with some reports blaming him directly for forcing her out. The backlash of that move was the start of a ratings crater — the next month, rival Good Morning America beat Today in total viewers and the 25-54 demo for the first time in 17 years.

When Ann Curry was let go from her place as the "Today" show co-host, Matt Lauer shouldered a lot of the blame. There were rumors that he didn't like working with her and that there was tension behind the scenes of the show. Now, in a new interview with Daily Beast, Lauer says that he didn't like the way Curry's exit was handled -- and he didn't agree with the decision to fire her in the first place.
"I don't think the show and the network handled the transition well. You don't have to be Einstein to know that," says Lauer. "It clearly did not help us. We were seen as a family, and we didn't handle a family matter well."
Largely, the public sympathized with Curry, who had to continue hosting the show even as rumors swirled about her departure and plans to replace her with Savannah Guthrie were made public.

New York — Stephen Colbert and the cast of "Modern Family" are next up as "Good Morning America" guest hosts for Robin Roberts, who is scheduled to undergo a bone marrow transplant this week.
The surging ABC morning show hasn't missed a beat since Roberts exited on Aug. 30. The co-host has Mds, a blood and bone marrow disease, and is out indefinitely for treatment that includes a transplant of marrow donated by her sister, Sally-Ann Roberts. Robin Roberts had to undergo chemotherapy before the procedure, said Tom Cibrowski, the show's senior executive producer.
Cibrowski offered more details about the schedule of substitutes for Roberts, which is expected to include Oprah Winfrey and newswomen Barbara Walters, Katie Couric and Diane Sawyer sometime next month.
Celebrities will be deployed in much the same way as Jessica Simpson was one day last week, appearing on the pop culture-heavy second hour alongside show regulars George Stephanopoulos,...

Although NBC refused to apologize for airing an interview with Kris Jenner instead of observing a moment of silence honoring the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks, NBC News president Steve Capus did -- sort of -- in a memo to affiliate executives, reports the New York Times.
"Yesterday, we made an editorial call resulting in the Sept, 11 moment of silence not being seen," Capus reportedly told NBC Affiliate Corporation Group executives. "While we dedicated a substantial amount of airtime to anniversary events, we still touched a nerve with many of your viewers...and for that we apologize."
While the other networks broke from their programming at 8:48 a.m., the moment the first plane hit the World Trade Center, "Today" was the only network program that did not break from its programming
What viewers saw instead was the "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" reality mom discussing her breast implants.

NBC News president Steve Capus reportedly offered a mea culpa to the Peacock network’s affiliates, expressing his regret that they fielded any backlash for Today‘s decision to air a Kris Jenner profile instead of the annual moment of silence pegged to the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
Today was the only one of the three network morning programs to not broadcast that part of the annual remembrance service, instead interviewing the Kardashian matriarch about her breast augmentation.
As part of a Wednesday memo to affiliate managers obtained and cited by the New York Times, Capus said, “[W]e...

NBC took some heat Tuesday when the Today Show opted to stick with an interview with Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner rather than cut to the ceremony at Ground Zero to remember the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. The network was the only major television outlet not to cover the moment of silence, but NBC defended its decision, pointing out to the New York Times that their editorial decision was consistent with their previous coverage of the anniversary and that no public apology was forthcoming.

NBC News President Steve Capus apologized to managers of the network’s affiliated stations — not for deciding not to observe a moment of silence marking the 11th anniversary of 9/11 during Tuesday’s Today show, but for subjecting the stations to criticism for a decision they didn’t make. Today was the only one of the three network morning shows that didn’t participate in the observation. Instead Today broadcast an interview with Kris Jenner of Keeping Up With The Kardashians discussing her breast augmentation. Capus sent his memo to NBC Affiliate Corporation Group executives, the New York Times reported, and began by citing Today’s coverage of the attacks on American embassies in Libya and Egypt. Then he added: “Yesterday, we made an editorial call resulting in the Sept. 11 moment of silence not being seen. While we dedicated a substantial amount of airtime to anniversary events, we still touched a...

Mitt Romney's presidential campaign has committed a monumental error in "reaching out to NBC News President Steve Capus to discuss the matter" of The Cycle host Touré's comments about the campaign's "niggerization" of President Obama. Setting aside the wisdom of even engaging the commentator on a subject that they have Jiffy-Pop-shaky ground upon which to stand, the optics of responding to a charge of racism by going to a black journalist's white boss can't possibly benefit them...with most voters.
