Disney announced on Monday that its Golden Globe-nominated animated feature Wish, starring Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine, will begin streaming on Disney+ on April 3rd.
An original musical comedy co-written by Disney Animation chief Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore, Wish takes us to the magical kingdom of Rosas, where Asha (DeBose), a sharp-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force — a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe — the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico (Chris Pine) — to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.
Lee’s co-director on the Academy Award-winning Frozen, Chris Buck, directed alongside Fawn Veerasunthorn, with the latter making her directorial debut. With Alan Tudyk playing Asha’s favorite goat, Valentino, the film also features the voices of Angelique Cabral,...

Harvey Guillén, who voices Gabo in Disney’s Wish, is giving his take on the studio’s inclusivity efforts on their animated films.
Looking back at the 100 years since Walt Disney Animation Studios was created, the actor said the studio was going in the “right direction.”
“I think they’re making strides in the right direction,” Guillén told ComicBook in an interview. “I think it’s hard to rebuild a wheel that’s already been in motion for a while, and it’s hard to think of a new direction, especially in where we’re at with the world, but they’re putting their best foot forward, I think. And sometimes those things take time, and I’m optimistic.”

The following contains major spoilers for Wish, now available digitally.
Wish is a celebration of the Disney Animation legacy that also carves a path forward for the classic brand. One of the more engaging elements of the movie is Queen Amaya and her quietly tragic storyline with her husband Magnifico. What could have been a standard and thankless role is elevated by Amaya's commitment to her people and her somber realization that her husband has become the villain of their story. All this contributes to a character who finds surprising strength in the movie, while still embracing the classic tropes that fans have come to expect from Disney.

Year 2023 will be remembered in Hollywood for various phenomena — the strikes, Barbenheimer — but for Latinos, 2023 was the year that saw a relatively significant number of movies and TV releases from and about their community, in a variety of genres. With actors and writers spending about half of last year unable to promote their projects, the atmosphere at Neuehouse in Hollywood was all the more electric last Friday evening as a who’s who of Latin entertainment, media, sports and politics came together to toast the excellence they saw on the big and small screens.
The event, La Cena Los Angeles, was an expansion of the intimate multi-city La Cena dinner series started last year by culture and impact consultant Ruben Garcia, formerly co-head of cultural business strategy at CAA, to cultivate community among impactful Latino figures across disciplines.

For Disney’s 100th anniversary, writer-ep Jennifer Lee was tasked with creating an original fairytale that celebrated the legacy of Disney animated films. After finding a common theme in wishing upon a star, Wish was born as a way to dissect the power and vulnerability of the concept.
Wish follows Asha (Ariana DeBose), a young girl who disagrees with how the kingdom’s ruler Magnifico (Chris Pine) treats the wishes of her fellow citizens. She wishes upon a star for change, but is surprised when that star comes down from the sky to answer her call. While Star was originally a character with a voice, Lee says the simpler version of Star led to a much more fun character with physical humor.
‘Wish’, from left: Star, Asha (voice: Ariana DeBose), Valentino (voice: Akan Tudyk)
Deadline: How did you arrive at that animation style? It’s very storybook-like.

Unfulfilled potential is a powerful theme for a story. Making Disney’s choice to explore what might happen if an entire kingdom of subjects surrendered their chance to fulfil their destinies by entrusting their deepest wish – and every memory of it – to their king an intriguing premise. Is it better to live with the hope that one day your wish may come true or to hold that dream close to your heart and let it guide your life’s path?
We’ll never know. Because, sadly, the House of Mouse’s hundredth-anniversary offering fails to interrogate its own themes, choosing to bimble about looking pretty (it is Very pretty), ticking off generic highs and lows in the place of real plot points and making knowing nods to animated features past instead. Leaving us to gloomily ponder what might have been.
Asha (Ariana DeBose) is a tour guide in her beloved Mediterranean home Rosas.

Wish, the latest Disney film, takes place in the fictional Kingdom of Rosas, located in the Mediterranean Sea off the Iberian Peninsula. The protagonist, Asha, embarks on a mission to reveal the truth that most wishes in Rosas are being deceived and aids in restoring everyone's true desires. Rosas is an original creation by Disney, with no clear real-life inspiration, distinguishing it from other Disney films that draw from recognizable locations.

Wish is a powerful and imaginative film that combines a classic Disney watercolor look with contemporary 3D animation styles. Alan Tudyk brings depth and unpredictability to the character of Valentino, the talking animal sidekick, through his improvisation skills. Chris Pine's character undergoes a captivating transformation from a charismatic king to a full-formed villain, supported by Julia Michaels' compelling song. Stay for the post-credit scene, a favorite Disney Easter egg that pays homage to the legacy.

What does it mean to be a Disney Princess? This could be a question regarding corporate decisions, as the Walt Disney Company has a specific classification for their "Princess Line" media franchise and toy line, but it's also a bit existential. As it turns out — there are rules to be considered an official Princess, with Disney currently recognizing 13 characters with the distinction. If there's a constant, all-encompassing rule to the universe, it's that absolutely nothing is built to last. If all matter is doomed to the inescapable fate of entropy, and every living thing eventually dies, then what hope do such lovely intangibles as love, desire, and dreams have?
Well, to quote that ersatz Disney prince, Vision, "a thing isn't beautiful because it lasts." Love, dreams, and wishes are beautiful almost because of the fact that they can't always come true; it's the hope, the having of these wishes, that makes life worth living more than merely the attainment of them. Walt Disney and the studio that still bears his name have been a proponent of this principle for Disney (the man's) entire life and Disney (the studio's) existence to date. And now that the studio has reached the milestone of sticking around for 100 years, it's only natural that they'd wish to...

Pine skillfully infuses Magnifico with likability while still showcasing his villainous tendencies, creating a character that can be both loved and hated by the audience. Recording Magnifico's song was a challenging yet rewarding experience for Pine.
Wish follows Asha, a teenage girl living in the kingdom of Rosas, which is ruled by the powerful King Magnifico. Although the entire kingdom looks up to him, Asha discovers a dangerous secret about Magnifico and looks to the stars for help. When they answer, much to her surprise, with a magical star coming to her assistance,...

So most of the big animation studios have sent us their big 2023 features already. Last weekend Dreamworks sent out those music-lovin’ Trolls into the multiplex, while Sony “kicked off” the flood of flicks early this Summer with another trek across the Spider-Verse, followed quickly by the fine folks at Pixar with their Elemental. Yes, they’re still a Disney “brand”, but what about the big “kahuna, the “Mouse House” themselves? Though they suffered from a major stumble with Strange World last Winter, they’re bouncing back in a big way. After all, it’s the official 100th anniversary, so this is a return and in many ways a tribute to, the fantasy themes that were such a big part of those original full-length films. Thinking about it that way, the title makes a whole lotta’ sense because the plot of many of them centered around a Wish.

Wish is a star-studded Disney movie that celebrates 100 years of Walt Disney animation with an original story about Asha's quest to stop King Magnifico's plans and save her kingdom. This year marks Disney’s 100th anniversary as an animation studio, and they’ve decided to celebrate the occasion by taking several of their classic characters and throw them all together into the same film for one magical story. That, at least, is what Wish is supposed to be—if you squint hard enough. The film plays incredibly coy with its portrayal of its classical Disney archetypes and tropes, choosing to take recognizable characters and their trademark traits and transpose them onto ancillary characters with only seconds of screen time.
What Zack Snyder did to DC Comics is what Wish does to Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, and that’s extremely odd for a studio so surgically effective at fracking its own nostalgia to new audiences. That wouldn’t be such a knock against Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn’s film had it turned out to have a life and vibrancy all its own.

Critics aren't thrilled with Wish, the latest animated feature coming to theaters from Disney.
Set for its wide release on Nov. 22, Wish is currently sitting on a rotten score of 58% at Rotten Tomatoes with its early reviews from critics. It's not great news for the House of Mouse, as this marks the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score for an animated Disney movie since Chicken Little, which was released 18 years ago in 2005. That film has a score of 37%, so for what it's worth, Wish is still comfortably ahead of that film with its critics' score. Movies are also considered to be "fresh" if they're rated 60% or higher, so if more positive reviews come in, Wish could also soon find its way out of its rotten status if it can bump up a few percentage points.

There’s a character in Disney’s self-mythologizing movie Wish whose life dream is to inspire the next generation. He lives in Rosas, the fictional kingdom ruled by the self-taught sorcerer Magnifico (voiced by Chris Pine). For reasons that remain murky, the wizard hoards his constituents’ wishes in his castle tower. When residents of Rosas turn 18, they relinquish their greatest dream in hopes that one day their benevolent dictator will fulfill it. Magnifico, like all authoritarian leaders, insists that it’s a small price to pay for their safety and eternal peace of mind.
The whole premise is very Disney, and Wish plays out as one would expect. Magnifico meets his match in Asha (Ariana DeBose), a 17-year-old girl who dares to question the order of things. Their encounter represents the generational crossroads that Disney finds itself at during its centennial. In him, a symbol of authority and empire. In her,...

This holiday season’s Wish is the 62nd feature film from the fabled Walt Disney Animation Studios, and the only one to be released during the animation house’s 100th anniversary. You can feel the weight of legacy in nearly every pixel of the film’s exquisitely designed frames.
Ever since Disney made the fateful choice to shut down Wdas’ hand-drawn divisions some 15 years ago, the studio has struggled with a sense of loss; the loss of history, the loss of legacy; and the loss of a little bit of that Disney magic. In the same timeframe, the company also scaled new creative heights, releasing several of their best so-called princess (or fairy tale) movies in the canon—Tangled, Frozen, Moana—and some true groundbreaking risks like Zootopia and the first Wreck-It Ralph. However, it’s never been quite the same.
This may be why nostalgia for dreams of old permeates Wish.

Chris Pine voices Magnifico, a king with the power to grant wishes in Disney's upcoming film Wish. Pine had fun voicing the character and credits the music by Ben Rice and Julia Michaels for helping him bring Magnifico to life. Chris Pine has admitted he was a bit nervous to perform opposite Ariana DeBose in the upcoming Disney animated film Wish.
Though the actor showed off his vocal cords in 2014’s Into the Woods, he recently told Entertainment Tonight, “It’s just not something I do on a daily.”
“When you’re singing opposite Ariana…it’s a big deal,” Pine added. But when DeBose learned her singing partner was doubting his ability, she had nothing but praise for him and his talents.
“He can sing! He can absolutely sing,” she told Et. “When I found out that I was cast in this film, I was like, ‘Oh!’ I mean, did you see him in Into The Woods?… I think Chris is one of those examples of not understanding just how talented he is.”
The Oscar winner went on to tease fans that they’re going to be surprised once...

Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, the Los Angeles premiere of Walt Disney Animation’s latest film “Wish” on Wednesday night was set to be a star-free affair — well, save for the literal star on which the movie is based.
But just before 5 p.m., the union announced that, after 118 days, the strike would come to an end as of 12:01 a.m. Pt on Thursday.
Of course, that meant the animated movie’s cast — including Oscar winner Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine — weren’t allowed to make a quick change into their red carpet finest and hustle over to the El Capitan Theatre for a screening set to begin at 7 p.m., but the mood was jubilant nonetheless.

After 100 years of making animated film musicals about talking animals, princesses, classic literary characters, superheroes, and even space pirates, there's not a whole lot of ground that Disney has never covered before. With the upcoming "Wish," however, the House of Mouse will ring in its centennial by focusing on the very idea of wishes. It's a motif that's appeared time and time again in the studio's work, yet it's rarely interrogated. What even is a "wish," really? Who decides which wishes come true and which ones do not? And if wishes can change the course of one's life, what does that even mean for those whose greatest wishes are never granted? It's a real existential conundrum, the further you go down this rabbit hole.
No doubt, you'll be shocked to learn that Disney hasn't fashioned "Wish" as an Ingmar Bergman-esque rumination on these questions and what they say about the human condition.

Jennifer Lee, Chief Creative Officer at Disney Animation, confirmed this afternoon that work has quietly begun on a third edition in the company’s Frozen film franchise during a keynote session at the London Film Festival (Lff).
Lee — who was a writer and director on the first two Frozen films — was tightlipped about any specific details regarding the threequel, including timeframes and production status, but told the Lff audience that she is “blown away” by the work the studio already has in the can.

The upcoming Disney animated film, "Wish," explores the power of wishes and celebrates Disney's 100-year legacy of characters dreaming and wishing upon stars. Producer Peter Del Vecho explains that making a wish is not enough; you have to work hard to make it come true yourself, just like Walt Disney did with his big dream to bring hope to the world. The film draws inspiration from classic Disney movies like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and The Princess and the Frog, evoking a nostalgic feeling.

Wish is a celebration of Disney Animation Studios' centennial, drawing inspiration from Disney's legacy and the idea of wishing upon a star. Producers Peter Del Vecho and Juan Pablo Reyes discuss the theme of wishing as a universal concept that resonates with people of all ages and backgrounds. Wish pays homage to Walt Disney's dream and the hard work required to make wishes come true, as well as honoring the visual style of early Disney legends.
In Wish, 17-year-old Asha lives in the Kingdom of Rosas, off the coast of the Iberian Peninsula. She makes a passionate wish upon a star but is shocked when one answers her plea. A star named Star falls to Earth and has the power to grant wishes. The two work together to defeat the darkness infecting the kingdom, tied to the powerful King Magnifico, and help the people of Rosas find a brighter future.
