Oscar-nominated Debra Winger is one of the most enigmatic actresses of her generation. She burst onto the film scene in 1980 with “Urban Cowboy” and in the course of the next three years, she was nominated for four Golden Globe Awards as well as two Oscar nominations (for “Officer” and “Terms”). To many female moviegoers in particular, Winger embodied the kind of tough, self-sufficient woman that they aspired to become, yet there was always room within Winger’s characters for love with the right person.
Post-1983, Winger continued to work steadily, earning a fifth Golden Globe nod for 1993’s “A Dangerous Woman” as well as a third Oscar nomination and second BAFTA nom for 1993’s “Shadowlands.” However, after 1995’s romantic comedy “Forget Paris,” Winger virtually disappeared from high-profile films, choosing a semi-retirement with occasional film work now and then. So Help Me Todd is showing different sides of Lyle this season—we just met his mother, played by the always fantastic Jenifer Lewis!—and Tristen J. Winger couldn’t be happier. “We get to see this romantic side of Lyle. We get to see a little bit of Lyle’s history to see why he is the way that he is, because a person like Lyle just doesn’t get involved in secret missions or in a CIA or the Nsa, and he isn’t a Mensa scholar. That doesn’t happen by accident, he’s not a genius on accident,” he tells TV Insider. So to see his history come in, to give us some insight into how he became who he is, and then also how he romances as well in his relationship with Alex [Vinessa Antoine] is a pleasure to play as well.” Below, Winger teases what else is ahead,...

“Lyle’s mother is an event,” So Help Me Todd‘s Tristen J. Winger says ahead of the April 11 episode. “If we have the iconic Jenifer Lewis playing this role, you know it’s an event.” Lewis’ Jacqueline is an international opera singer and supreme diva Margaret (Marcia Gay Harden) and Todd (Skylar Astin) must defend in “End on a High Note,” and TV Insider has an exclusive sneak peek. Watch the video above to see what Jacqueline thinks of Margaret’s apartment. “What an absolute honor to work with the great Marcia Gay Harden,” Lewis says. “The entire cast and crew were absolutely amazing. The show is sooo much fun.” As you can already get the sense of in the clip, Lyle’s not exactly happy about his worlds colliding. “As much as he loves his mother, she’s a lot, she’s a handful, and she’s the...

Michael Douglas is one of the most well-known actors in Hollywood. Having gained prominence with his role in the ABC series The Streets of San Francisco, the actor went on to star in several movies and series. After acquiring the rights to the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest from his father, he produced the eponymous film and won his first Academy Award for it as well.

On the eve of Shirley MacLaine’s 90th birthday (on April 24), let’s revisit on this 96th Academy Awards day what remains one of the top five Oscar acceptance speeches (in my humble opinion) ever: the night 40 years ago when MacLaine won Best Actress for “Terms of Endearment” over co-star Debra Winger (who played her daughter) and three others. It hearkened back to an era before the orchestra played off the big winners if they dared exceed 90 seconds or so. MacLaine’s speech clocked in at a leisurely 3 minutes, 26 seconds, and not a moment of it seemed unnecessary on that night of April 9, 1984 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. It started with, “I’m gonna cry because this show has been as long as my career!” and ended with, “I deserves this. Thank you.” Watch the full presentation and speech above.
It was MacLaine’s sixth nomination and her first and only win.

Mick Mars has shared the new song “Right Side of Wrong,” the second single from his upcoming debut solo album The Other Side of Mars (arriving February 23rd).
The track is a worthy follow-up the powerful “Loyal to the Lie,” the previous single that launched the campaign for Mars’ first solo LP. Here, the former Mötley Crüe axeman once again dabbles in a surging alternative-metal/post-grunge sound that backs up pointed lyrics — possibly Mars releasing some angst over how things went down with the Crüe.
If that interpretation of the lyrics is on a more personal/micro level, Mars’ press release for the song also offers a macro perspective: “The song explores the oxymoron of two individual minds viewing their position as the right one. While in reality it is simply personal perspective — a present theme in interpersonal relationships we all navigate and more broadly the catalyst of many conflicts on a global societal basis.

Mick Mars, the founding and former guitarist of Mötley Crüe, has announced his debut solo album, The Other Side of Mars, arriving February 23rd. The video for “Loyal to the Lie,” the lead single from the LP, can be streamed now.
“When it comes to my playing, there’s the Mötley side and the Mars side,” the guitarist said of his upcoming album, and “Loyal to the Lie” showcases the latter.
Crüe fans might be taken aback by the song’s more alt-metal/industrial slant, with singer Jacob Bunton providing impassioned vocals over Mars’ axework — which sounds as sharp and technically proficient as ever. While the Mötley Crüe camp raised questions about Mars’ physical ability to play amid the nasty exchanges that followed Mars’ retirement from touring with the band, this song testifies to the fact that he’s still got it.

The most common criticism levied against NBC’s Community during its chaotic and generally acclaimed six-season run was that it was all snark and no heart. It’s a complaint that’s been levied at many self-aware, pop culture-literate works by Gen Xers. But in this case, it was flat-out wrong. Threaded alongside creator Dan Harmon’s meta-sitcom-as-sitcom commentary was a poignant and gut-twisting look at loneliness and purpose that suggested that even being part of a co-dependent hot mess of a friend group was better than navigating life solo.
By the final episode, the writers had turned their half-hour sitcom about seven maladjusted people in a study group at Greendale Community College into a sandbox in which they could do everything from riff on conspiracy theories, fanboy over Ken Burns and The Wire, and eventually question the nature of reality. The series was arch and arty but goofy as well.

Madrid, Aug 24 (Ians) Spanish club Osasuna will make their European comeback for the first time since 2007 as they face the Belgian team, Bruges, in the preliminary round of the Conference League on Thursday.
The team from Pamplona, which secured a seventh-place finish in La Liga last season, endured an uncertain period before their European spot was confirmed. This was due to an investigation into match-fixing allegations from the 2013-14 La Liga season.
While the club was initially ousted from the competition, their position was restored on appeal. They received a fine of 100,000 euros and were directed to surrender five percent of their income from the group stage should they qualify, reports Xinhua.
UEFA determined that the match-fixing was orchestrated by the club’s former directors, some of whom have since been sentenced to prison in Spain.

It seemed like Winger were catching flak from all sides in the 1990s.
As the industry swiftly closed the door on hair metal in the wake of the grunge revolution, Winger became the proverbial punching bag for the metal community and the “fall guy” for a genre that had seemingly died overnight.
Famously, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich can be seen throwing darts at a pin-up of Kip Winger in the video for “Nothing Else Matters.” Then, Mike Judge plastered a Winger shirt on Stewart, the dorky neighborhood kid on Beavis and Butt-Head.
Over the years, Kip has lamented the fact that these very public anti-endorsements effectively stifled Winger’s career as a band — and cast a stigma that has scarred the legacy of the band and its members. It doesn’t help that Winger’s biggest hit, “Seventeen,” hasn’t exactly aged well in terms of political correctness.

Notable rock musician, Kip Winger, known especially for his 1998 self-titled release with his band Winger, recently talked with TV Fanatic to discuss his career, from his heady days of rock and roll fame, to his love for classical composition while promoting the Paramount+ documentary, I Wanna Rock: The ‘80s Metal Dream.
Winger’s multifaceted career offers a look inside a musician’s path, navigating the music industry's highs and lows and finding his own voice through it all.
His musical journey began with his self-taught immersion in rock. “I started out in a rock band with my brothers, and I was always a self-taught musician,” he said. Living in New York, he focused heavily on his music, working with various composers to hone his craft.
His first taste of commercial fame came in 1984 with a song for Kix, and in 1985 joined Alice Cooper’s band, where he remained for two...

The Patient (FX) The Patient
Most episodes of FX’s The Patient stick with the perspective of Steve Carell’s Alan Strauss, a therapist held captive by a serial killer portrayed by Domhnall Gleeson. But in the seventh episode, “Kaddish,” the camera zooms out. As Alan says the Jewish prayer of mourning for both his dead wife and himself, director Gwyneth Horder-Payton photographs Carell through a rain-stained window in the basement room where he’s imprisoned.
“It just felt like the time to pull back the cameras and observe this human being in his own misery,” says executive producer Chris Long.
Backlit by light pouring in through glass bricks, Carell stands solemnly holding a piece of paper his captor printed out for him with the words of the kaddish. It’s an emotionally fraught moment, but Long and creators Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields thought it best to leave the character in his loneliness.

“It provided this window into the inner life of the characters,” shares “Transatlantic” co-creator, writer, and executive producer Anna Winger on what appealed to her about Julie Orringer’s novel “The Flight Portfolio,” which served as the basis for her Netflix limited series. She is a novelist herself, so she appreciated how the book “really got into the minds of the characters” to tell the “crazy story that brings together Americans with Germans and French” in the “melting pot of Marseille.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Exclusive: Jörg Winger and his Sam – A Saxon co-creator Tyron Ricketts believe the time is now right to tell the story of East Germany’s first Black policeman after a near-20-year period of shopping the project.
Disney+’s Sam – A Saxon, which was the streamer’s first German greenlight, spotlights Samuel Meffire, a former bricklayer who became the first elite East German policeman of African descent in the 1980s, where he went from diversity poster boy to being on the wrong side of the law. Ricketts first met Meffire in 2002 and began shopping the project – initially as a feature – with Deutschland 83 co-creator Winger in 2006, but the pair believe German audiences have only become ready for the story in the past couple of years.

Actor and producer Donald Glover starred on Community for years, playing the role of the beloved Troy Barnes. The show amassed quite a cult following in its six seasons, earning some impressive ratings at times. In fact, the show worked so well that the cast is currently wrapping up production on the Community movie.
But believe it or not, Glover was blissfully unaware of the show’s popularity when he was on it, at least at first. It took a trip over the Canadian border for him to realize he was famous.

Manjeri, April 9 (Ians) Former Indian Super League (Isl) Champions Hyderabad Fc began their Hero Super Cup campaign by defeating Aizawl Fc 2-1 in a Group B clash at the Payannad stadium here on Sunday.
Hyderabad Fc head coach Manolo Marquez decided to rest a few of the seasoned campaigners, including leading goalscorer, Bartholomew Ogbeche and offered opportunities to those who didn’t get much game time during the Isl early this season.
Former I-League champions Aizawl Fc made it to the group stages of the competition by defeating Trau Fc in the qualifier. Despite the reputation of their strong opponents, Aizawal looked like a determined side, willing to put up an even fight.
After initial exchanges, Hyderabad Fc, who held the upper hand, broke the deadlock with a counter-attack in the 17th minute. It all started when Aizawl Fc failed to capitalise on a corner kick and the ball was cleared by the Hyderabad defence.

TV shows and movies inspired by real-life events tend to overstate the truth for dramatic effect. Netflix’s Transatlantic is a rare case of underplaying history — in this case, the work of Varian Fry, Mary Jayne Gold, and the rest of the European Rescue Committee, who worked to get Jewish refugees safely out of Europe in the early days of World War II.
In reality, Fry, a journalist, and Gold, an heiress, helped the Erc smuggle more than 2,000 refugees — many of them great artists and intellectuals like Marc Chagall and Hannah Arendt — out of France.

This article contains spoilers for Transatlantic.
Netflix’s new period drama Transatlantic tells the story of Journalist Varian Fry (Cory Michael Smith), and American expatriate and heiress Mary Jayne Gold (Gillian Jacobs) who founded the Emergency Rescue Committee (Erc) that helped over 2,000 people flee the Nazis during World War II, without government support.
The series, created by Anna Winger and Daniel Hendler, is a fictional representation of true events in which people did whatever was necessary to save those in danger. So how much of Transatlantic is the real story and what did the creators leave out?
The Inspiration Behind Netflix’s Transatlantic
In both the series and real life, Gold and Fry helped prominent European figures such as political philosopher Hannah Arendt, painter Max Ernst and German novelist Heinrich Mann escape to the United States, away from the Nazis persecuting Jews across Europe.

Netflix’s new limited series Transatlantic is the inversion of the streamer’s recent Elvis-as-animated-spy comedy Agent Elvis.
With Agent Elvis, it was: Come for the silly premise, genre hijinks and a lovable (thoroughly historically accurate) masturbating chimpanzee, stay for the surprisingly well-researched exploration of 1960s and ’70s esoterica.
With Transatlantic, I came for what is a spectacular, perhaps under-known corner of history, with tendrils into 1930s and ’40s European cultural esoterica, and I was left with genre hijinks, surrealist wackiness and a lovable (thoroughly historically accurate) dog.
Take that as you will.
If Transatlantic arrived on Netflix with a guarantee that every viewer who tuned in would promptly go and learn more about the story of Varian Fry, Mary Jayne Gold and the Villa Air-Bel, I would give it a strong recommendation.
The series, which hails from Unorthodox co-creator Anna Winger and Daniel Handler, is a frothy adventure yarn...

Anna Winger, an American writer, producer and showrunner who has spent more than 20 years, and her entire TV career, in Berlin, specializes in stories that combine a very specific European, usually German, history filtered through very American sensibilities.
Deutschland ’83, and its sequels Deutschland ’86 and Deutschland ’89, which aired on Amazon Prime stateside, told the story of the decline of East Germany and the fall of the Berlin Wall from the perspective of an East German spy, but told in the style of a slick Hollywood thriller.
Similarly, her Emmy-winning Netflix limited series Unorthodox, the story of a woman who flees her life in an ultra-Orthodox community in Brooklyn to find liberation in modern-day Berlin — based on Deborah Feldman’s best-selling memoir — borrows heavily from genre conventions to package a spiritual character study in the guise of more mainstream entertainment.

Exclusive: Anna Winger drew inspiration from comedy and entertainment in Casablanca when penning upcoming Netflix war drama Transatlantic.
The show, which is the first to emerge from the Deutschland 83 creator’s Netflix deal, tells the story of the Emergency Rescue Committee, an organization that helped thousands of refugees escape Nazi-occupied Marseille during World War Two.
Speaking exclusively to Deadline just before its Series Mania premiere, Winger said she wanted to set Transatlantic apart from previous similar offerings such as Schindler’s List through its humor and creativity, and that she sought inspiration from 1942 hit Casablanca.
“I’ve been approached with lots of World War Two material during my career and have avoided it because I felt like it had been done, but what I loved about this story is the positivity,” she added.
“We leaned into the style of the movies made at the time [of Casablanca], which were being made...

Chennai, Oct 21 (Ians) Fc Goa secured a 2-0 win over Chennaiyin Fc at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Friday to maintain their unbeaten record in the Indian Super League 2022-23.
Midfielder Noah Wail Sadaoui first assisted Redeem Tlang in the 10th minute and then added the second goal in the injury time to earn full points for Fc Goa. This is the second win for the Gaurs this season in as many games.
While both the teams started quite aggressively, sharing almost equal possession, it was Fc Goa who managed to take an early lead. Winger Tlang gave the visitors an advantage when he headed a Sadaoui cross perfectly into the net.
Chennaiyin, however, kept pushing and created several goal-scoring opportunities but couldn’t manage to find the back of the net. One of the such breathtaking moment came in the 20th minute when Prasanth Karuthadathkuni beautifully carried the...
