UFC president Dana White has said countless times that Saturday’s middleweight title fight between Israel Adesanya and Paulo Costa at UFC 253 has his prediction for “Fight of the Year.”
“I think that fight is going to be an absolute war,” White said in August. “Just stylistically, it matches up really, really well, and both guys are animals. Both guys want this fight really bad, and I think it’s going to be ‘Fight of the Year.’”
There have been some incredible fights in 2020 that present stiff competition, but there...

The Karate Kid’s fateful tournament gets an ESPN quasi-documentary treatment ahead of Cobra Kai Season 2.
For those unaware, ESPN’s 30 for 30 is a long-running documentary series that chronicles an array of sports’ historic and/or notorious moments. However, ahead of the release of the second season of YouTube Red’s Cobra Kai, fans of The Karate Kid movie mythos – in which it takes place – can see its bellwether moment, the fateful 1984 All Valley Under-18 Karate Tournament, get spotlighted! – Fictional status notwithstanding.
Amongst the things heralding the arrival of Cobra Kai Season 2 later this month is a six-minute mockumentary pseudo trailer of a 30 for 30 episode, chronicling the culminating martial arts competition of 1984’s The Karate Kid. Pushing on the motto of the docuseries, "Too dramatic not to be real," the clip focuses on the iconic movie moment that climaxes with Daniel Larusso’s (Ralph Macchio) cathartic victory...

Dana White says it's obvious to him ... Amanda Nunes is the greatest female fighter Ever. But, when you add men to the mix -- is she better than Jon Jones? White broke it down for us ... saying Nunes has not only beaten the best of the best, but destroyed Cris Cyborg -- "the most feared fighter out there" -- and made it look easy. Don't forget, she also dominated Ronda Rousey, Valentina Shevchenko (twice) and Miesha Tate.

2014 is at an end, at least so far as the major Mma promotions are concerned. The Ufc had their final card of the year this past Saturday night with Ufc Fight Night 58, where Lyoto Machida made short work of Cb Dollaway. Bellator wound things down in November with Bellator 131 (Tito vs. Bonnar), and will not return until January; One Fc had their last card the day before the Ufc event, and don’t roll again until February, while the Wsof has closed shop for the year and returns January 17th with a card headlined by Jake Shields.
What that means is that the bulk of relevant action in the sport of Mma is done for the year. though we’ve no doubt overlooked any number of regional shows.

The big news coming out of Ufc Fight Night 58, aside from Lyoto Machida’s devastating Tko of Cb Dollaway, was the re-signing by the Ufc of Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, a move that surprised many in the Mma world mainly because Rampage was believed to be under contract with Bellator Mma. Now, it’s no secret that Jackson has not been happy with Bellator since Bjorn Rebney, the promotion’s founder, was fired this past summer, and there was talk that perhaps this situation was similar to the one with Eddie Alvarez, where Bellator opted to let the fighter go after years of drama between him and the promotion, including a lot of legal wrangling.
It seems, however, that such is not the case here, and there may in fact be more legal wrangling to come. According to a post by Scott Coker on his twitter and retweeted by Bellator Mma’s official account,...

Ufc
Twas the weekend before Christmas, and all through the Ufc “house,” not a creature was stirring, not even Mighty Mouse. Except, of course, for the boatload of fighters heading down to Brazil for Ufc Fight Night 58, otherwise known as Ufc Fight Night: Machida vs. Dollaway. The event airs live Saturday from Barueri, Brazil, and will be the final Ufc event of 2014 (Ufc 182 airs January 3rd).
The Ufc entered December with a bang, and they’re looking to ride that high right into next month. Is Machida vs. Dollaway the event to do it with? On paper, maybe. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, and coming off a strong pair of events last weekend (The Ultimate Fighter 20 Finale, and Ufc on Fox 13), it probably can’t top the month’s earlier events. That said, there’s a strong main and co-main event here, and a couple of key fights.

Ufc
Ufc 181 was the promotion’s biggest, and most successful, card since Ufc 175 back in the summer, which coincidentally also featured two title fights (Chris Weidman taking on Lyoto Machida, and Ronda Rousey meeting Alexis Davis). With welterweight champion Johny Hendricks vs. Robbie Lawler II as the main event, and lightweight champion Anthony Pettis vs. Gilbert Melendez as the co-main event, you already had serious star power.
Add in Travis Browne vs. Brendan Schaub, a returning Todd Duffee, and Urijah Faber on the preliminary card, and you had enough big names to generate some serious interest.
Without question, top to bottom, Ufc 181 was a success, and the Ufc can breathe easy: entering into their key end-of-the-year events (the Tuf 20 finale, Ufc on Fox 13, and Ufc 182 in early January), they’ve building momentum. Ufc
It has been a while since the Ufc had a Pay-per-View to offer fans – over a month in fact. Nearly two. The last Ufc PPV card was back at the start of July, Ufc 175 – a huge card that saw both Chris Weidman and Ronda Rousey defend their titles, against Lyoto Machida and Alexis Davis, respectively. That marked the biggest PPV show to date for the Ufc in 2014.
The drought that followed was unfortunately brought on by the last-minute cancellation of Ufc 176 due to an injury to featherweight champion Jose Aldo. That brings us to Ufc 177 – another extremely thin card relying, if we’re being honest, on a single fight: T.J. Dillashaw vs. Renan Barao 2.
Dillashaw shocked the Mma world back in May by dominating Barao from pillar to post over the course of five rounds, taking the title from a champion who had seemed unbeatable since arriving in the Ufc.

What’s next for Ufc champs Chris Weidman and Ronda Rousey?
Ronda Rousey made short work of challenger Alexis Davis in the co-main event of Ufc 175, delivering her second Tko victory, and fastest win yet.
Chris Weidman engaged in a much closer battle with challenger and former light heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida, winning a unanimous decision when all was said and done.
Uriah Hall, meanwhile, won his bout fighting almost three full rounds with a broken toe.
The biggest card of the year thus far turned out to be a mixed bag of action outside those bouts, but there are a lot of matches to look at. One fight was kiboshed entirely, the Stefan Struve vs. Matt Mitrione heavyweight tilt, as Struve reportedly had a panic attack back stage that triggered heart palpitations. Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida (21-5), the former Ufc light heavyweight champ and current middleweight contender, is a true dichotomy in the sport of mixed martial arts.
Machida’s a puzzle so complex that even a World War II-era “enigma machine” might have had trouble cracking his code. He is that one-of-a-kind fighter routinely referenced as next to impossible for opponents to emulate during training camp.
As a 3rd dan black belt in Shotokan karate, Machida not only reintroduced traditional martial arts into Mma, but he also perfectly embodies Bruce Lee’s “be like water” philosophy. He is an elusive counter-strike fighter with a blitzkrieg-like attack (and a southpaw to boot); he can both flow and when necessary crash with the force of a typhoon.
In his Ufc tenure, Machida has amassed a 13-5 record fighting only the cream of the crop in the light heavyweight and middleweight divisions.

Ufc 175 is live this Saturday night from the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, with the Ufc selling it as their biggest show of the year. That’s partly true, however, it has fallen short of being a true ‘supershow’, particularly after the storied Sonnen vs Silva feud was pulled from the card due to both men failing drug tests. That weakened the box office lure for 175 significantly, although company celebrity and women’s champion Ronda Rousey should ensure a PPV draw-rate of around 500,000 buys.

Chris Weidman had a phenomenal 2013, defeating Anderson Silva first at Ufc 162, capturing the Ufc Middleweight title in the process, and then beating ‘The Spider’ once again at Ufc 168 in December, retaining his title via technical knockout when Anderson Silva suffered a horrific injury, breaking his left fibula and tibia when Weidman checked one of Anderson’s low kicks. Weidman will now face Lyoto Machida in the main event of Ufc 175 on July 5th, with the Ufc Middleweight title on the line.
Although Weidman defeated the legendary Anderson Silva twice, he still isn’t considered as a legitimate champion by some of his critics. Come Saturday, Weidman will have the perfect opportunity to silence his critics once and for all with a victory over the former Ufc Lightweight champion Lyoto ‘The Dragon’ Machida, who is also one of the most respected fighters in the history of Mma.

Even the loss of Chael Sonnen vs. Wanderlei Silva/Vitor Belfort hasn’t dulled the anticipation for the event (well, not too much), and the Ufc has to be hoping that it will make bank when it comes time to order the fight, given the tepid performance of recent PPVs. The promotion goes big every July, and there’s a lot on the line with this card.
For starters, you have Ronda Rousey, one of the biggest draws in Mma right now, defending her belt against Canadian Alexis Davis, perhaps the last legitimate contender signed by the Ufc who’s actually ready for a title shot (the other immediate candidate would be Cat Zingano, but after injuring her knee and the death of her husband,...

It takes a lot to impress Ufc middleweight champ Chris Weidman when it comes to fighting ... but CW says Jay Z's performance in the infamous elevator rumble got him some major Mma cred!Weidman was on Bet's "106 & Park" earlier today when he was asked who he thinks would win in a celebrity Ufc fight -- Jay Z or 50 Cent. The punches were flying at Ufc Fight Night 36 on Feb. 15, and after the dust settled, Lyoto had outfoxed his opponent and given himself a potential shot at the middleweight title belt.
Though Lyoto Machida couldn’t knock out his opponent Gerard Mousasi at Ufc Fight Night 36 on Feb. 15, he clearly dominated the five-round match, and went home with an unanimous decision victory.
Lyoto Machida Defeats Gerard Mousasi On Ufc Fight Night 36
Judges awarded the middleweight contender with scores of 50-45, 50-45, and 49-46 after he controlled the bout and landed fierce blows on Mousasi with several left head kicks.
Now after dominating on Fight Night, Machida has his sights set on the middleweight title, and he very well may get a shot at whoever wins the Ufc title fight between Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort in May.
“I obviously would like to get the champ,” Machida told Espn after the match.

Chris Weidman shocked the Mma world last year with two victories over long-time middleweight king Anderson Silva. Weidman now stands atop the division with a lengthy line of hungry contenders waiting to get their hands on his belt. The champ is seemingly ready to take on anybody. He’s young, strong and has a solid grappling game; the Ncaa Division 1 All-American is also the only man to ever knockout Anderson Silva in a Mma fight.
Weidman has shown to be very well rounded, durable and dangerous although inexperienced. He’ll be put to the test by a handful of elite fighters making their way through the division’s top ten.
5. Gegard Mousasi

Tonight at 10 on Fox Sports 1 marks the premiere of the 18th season of The Ultimate Fighter, the long-running reality competition series that puts a bunch of up-and-coming mixed martial artists in a house and lets them duke it out for a shot at Ufc glory. For the first time, half of the contestants will be female, and both mixed-gender teams will be coached by women: Ufc women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey and top contender (and personal Rousey rival) Miesha Tate. Ufc 169 was to be held in Rio De Janeiro at the Hsbc arena. With many hometown fighters it was set to be an excellent pay per view culminating in an interesting fight for the featherweight championship between Jose Aldo and The Korean Zombie. Also on the card we would see the Brazilian Lyoto Machida take on Phil Davis in a unofficial number one contenders match up. Here is my report of the main card at Ufc 163.
First Match:
John Lineker vs. Jose Maria. Winner: John Lineker
Flyweight Division
John Lineker looked to claim another victory in his home country of Brazil against fellow compatriot and last minute replacement Jose Maria. Jose Maria had not been beaten since 2008 whilst Lineker has won 16 of his last 17 fights. Lineker is known for exciting fighting style and his knockout power and he looked to showcase this in the match.

See that kid on the right? The one staring at Mma fighter Krzysztof Soszyznki? Yeah. That's Cody Hackman - a five time world karate champion punching a little above his weight class in upcoming Mma set fight drama Tapped. Lucky for Hackman he's got cinematic badass Michael Biehn along with Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida in his corner. Also lucky for him is that director Allan Ungar has clearly figured out how to capture the energy of Mma style fighting.A disgruntled teenager, sent to do community service at a rundown Karate school, enters an Mma tournament to face the man who killed his parents. You wouldn't go too far wrong considering this an Mma spin on The Karate Kid and with Anderson Silva set to defend...

Now, I'm willing to concede that Michael Biehn can stare down just about anyone, but put him in the octagon with a mixed martial arts fighting champion? Well ... that's probably not going to actually happen in Allan Ungar's Tapped, but they'll certainly be in spitting distance of one another.Biehn stars in the upcoming revenge flick set against the backdrop of mixed martial arts, anchoring a cast that includes Martin Kove, Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, Krzysztof Soszyznki, Nick Bateman and Cody Hackman. Once in a blue moon a fighter arises from nowhere who really catches the eye of the Mma community. The cliché of the hype train is a term that best describes this. On occasion, they are very accurate and warranted – see Jon Jones, Lyoto Machida etc.
Sometimes fans like to claim that they saw fighters rise from obscurity to stardom, and the gargantuan rise of the aforementioned Jon Jones is hard to put into words; from a middle of the card scrap to short notice title fight in little over a month. Jones won the light heavyweight belt with an impressive victory against Shogun Rua, going on to defend his belt 5 times and clinching a Nike sponsorship deal in the process. Hype well and truly granted.
However, this article will look at those occasions when a fighter has a heap of potential and hype but has not been able to deliver.

The Ufc made history this weekend when it hosted its first ever women’s mixed martial arts match, its first ever women’s championship defense, its first ever openly gay/lesbian fighter, and its first ever female headliner. Yes, all of that in a single event that has already shattered a few records. This was not the first ever Wmma bout to be sure, but with the prestige, power, and position of the Ufc, holding a women’s fight anoints the growing movement within the sport with legitimacy and belonging.

As we all know, there are film fans everywhere, even (especially?) in the world of sports. That works out well, since athletes are granted a public forum with which to showcase their movie fandom that maybe, say, systems analysts or accountants are not. (Sorry, systems analysts and accountants.)
But while athletes (or coaches) paying homage to their favorite films is nothing that's necessarily new, those instances have come in varying degrees of devotion. Here, we have nine memorable cases of sports mimicking movies, either in front of the camera or on the field.
1. Falcons Tight End Tony Gonzalez Pulls an 'Anchorman'
The NBC Sunday Night Football intros are a double-edged sword: they're great in that they get you pumped for the game to a unique degree, but also silly in that they allow the players to do basically whatever the hell they want (see also: Randy Moss claiming to have...

It's almost impossible to watch (and/or be a fan of) The Karate Kid and not immediately want to test out the "crane kick" as soon as the movie is over. When I was a kid, my friends and I would constantly try out the iconic kick from the movie on each other, with varying results. One time someone was accidentally kicked in the nose and suffered a nose bleed, so from then on out our parents banned us from playing Karate Kid in the basement. It's a unique move, and it's one of the most memorable parts of the movie. But does it actually work? Yes and no. Back in 2011, Mma fighter Lyoto Machida shocked the world when he knocked out Randy Couture with a version of the crane kick (or switch kick) that didn't include the elaborate hands-in-the-air position...

For those watching Ufc 152 on Saturday night the sight of former Ufc light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort locking in an armbar that was seconds away from snapping Jon Jones‘ arm was cringe worthy. There was no doubt that his arm was damaged after that point but the champion was able to survive and came back from the brink of defeat in the first round, submitting his veteran opponent via americana arm lock in the fourth round.
Today, MMAJunkie reported that Jones had been told by doctors that he may have nerve damage to his right bicep. While Jones’ impressive victory had many discussing the reigning champion’s next opponent, Bones’ arm will likely sideline him at least until the end of the first quarter of 2013.
With all the injuries plaguing the sport at the moment the damage sustained by one of the Ufc’s most marketable fighters compounds Ufc President Dana White’s frustration.

“Sugar” Rashad Evans (16-1-1) headlines the Ufc on Fox event this weekend, January 28, 2012. His opponent is the new Mma prototype of young, hyper-athletic, next generation fighter, Phil Davis (9-0), a fighter cut from the same cloth as current champion Jon Jones.
Evans has been the number 1 contender to reclaim his old belt for nearly two years now and is the consensus #2 light heavyweight in the world by every reputable poll. He is an athletic, powerful collegiate wrestler with quick hands and good power. By every measure, including his phenomenal record with wins over Rampage, Liddell, Bisping, Thiago Silva, and Tito Ortiz, Evans is a top tier fighter. One of the elites.

Recent MIT grad Matt Franklin (Topher Grace) should be working for a Fortune 500 company and starting his upward climb to full-fledged yuppie-hood. Instead, the directionless 23-year-old confounds family and friends by taking a part-time job behind the counter of a video store at the Sherman Oaks Galleria. I’ll get this out of the way: “Never Back Down” was an incredibly punk-ass fight flick. I think I spent the majority of the film rolling my eyes and sighing audibly, which is always a good sign that I am not impressed. When I heard someone was crafting a sequel, I think I may have laughed a little, that is, until I learned that Michael Jai White would star and direct the flick. Needless to say, I’m definitely on-board now. The teaser trailer for “Never Back Down 2: The Beatdown” has finally arrived, and I must say, it’s pretty badass. Not only do you get to see White doing his thing, the feature also stars Ufc Fighter Todd Duffee, Mma Fighter Scott Epstein, and Ufc Champion Lyoto Machida. Wow! Check out the clip below. Mention the sport of Mma (Mixed Martial Arts) and you'll likely be greeted by blank stares. Most people will, however, respond to hearing it referred to as Ufc (the most popular brand, a bit like referring to your generic brand vacuum cleaner as a Hoover or your generic brand fake-torch sex-toy as a Fleshlight) or cage fighting. But then they'll usually tell you that it's terrible and it should be banned. You don't really watch that, do you?
Such is the stigma attached to Mma. If you're reading this site, you can probably relate to this. Ever get told by people with no idea that comics are for kids or that if you like watching Star Trek then...
