Are we locked in? Ready? American Idol's twelfth season is about to launch into its most awesome (and stressful, if you're me) section -- the Top 40 shakedown and the mega blitz of eliminations that we, the mean home viewers, get to decide. It's do or die for your weird personal favorites: That chick with the dreadlocks and beads who sings Donny Hathaway? She might be deported back to Birkenstock Island. That closeted homosexual with the Manilow confidence? Randy Jackson might decapitate him. Ahhh! Gay carnage.
Now that the winning 40 guys and girls of Season 12 have been announced, let's take a look back at the auditions we liked most. I've ranked them because I'm compulsive about this sort of thing.
5. Paul Jolley
Yes, yes, I hear you -- shut up, Louis, about your affection for the effete Southern balladeer who refuses to sing anything but pathetic country music of the 21st century.

If The Voice‘s Season 3 soul hippie Nicholas David happens to be reading this recap, maybe he can jump down to the comments and prescribe us all a nice herbal remedy to combat anxiety, nausea and full-body jitters. Because no matter which of the Top 6 contestants you’ve been digging for the last few months, there’s no way you can head into Tuesday night’s results-show telecast with total confidence that they’ll break on through to the other side.

For the final salvo in what’s arguably been the deepest, most evenly matched field in American Idol history, Tuesday night’s Season 11 finale came up surprisingly light in the competitive fireworks department.
Maybe the Top 2 — Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips — were still heeding last week’s instructions from their fallen comrade Joshua Ledet: “No! More! Drama!” Or perhaps it was just the incongruousness of the matchup, which was akin to making a choice between a stunning courture evening gown and a perfectly battered old t-shirt. (“But what’s the occasion?” you might’ve asked.)

The three who remain standing after tonight's American Idol will receive a hero's welcome in their hometowns. The eliminated contestant will just be going home. Bummer.
But hey, there's still the tour, right? And all the guests in theater tonight got a ticket to one of the live shows so we know at least a few people will be there.
David Cook and La Diva Latina herself will perform tonight, and we'll get the only honest criticism we're hearing all season from Jimmy.
Phillip Phillips, who went first in both rounds last night, is going first tonight, too. Jimmy liked that Phillip lost the guitar and added a saxophone on "Have You Ever Seen The Rain." He thought it added to Phillip's repertoire as an artist. For "Volcano," Jimmy said "it all came together" and vowed that had he seen that performance in a different venue, he would've signed Phillip on the spot.

Another night of standing O's for Ledet, more catcalls for Hollie Cavanagh and high praise for Phillip Phillips.
By Gil Kaufman
Joshua Ledet performs on "American Idol"

Wednesday night's episode of "American Idol" offered definitive proof of what happens when you give the kids the keys to the Lambo: they crash and burn.
On an evening when the themes were as vague as any we can recall (California Dreamin? Songs You Wish You'd Written?), the top four either went obscure or doubled-down on the most obvious choices possible, which made for an uneven night.
A few things became crystal clear, though: based on the girl squeals, Phillip Phillips could win this thing in a walk-off without singing another note as long as he loses his razor, smiles and keeps clothes shopping at J.C. Penny. Similarly, Joshua Ledet pretty much has it in the bag, while Hollie Cavanagh...

American Idol is winding down, y'all. In just two weeks we'll have to find a new way to spend our Tuesday evenings.
Tonight the contestants will sing one song from an artist or band from California and one song they wish they had written themselves. I don't know who's picking these "themes" but they're getting more and more out there as the weeks go on.
Round One:
Phillip Phillips is up first tonight with the California choice of Ccr's "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" and without his guitar. I don't like the arrangement. The saxophone and piano accompaniment is too lounge-y. Steven says he's "living proof that the road to success is always under construction." J.Lo said he sounded like Joe Cocker. Randy said it started rough, but he fell into place by the first chorus. Then he called it sensational. It wasn't spectacular. Phillip sounded like himself,...

Now that I've gathered all my tweets about The Voice, loaded them into a cannon, and fired them at joyless time-waster Christina Milian, let's criticize Teams Cee-Lo and Adam Levine like the withering warblers they are. We suffered two instant eliminations tonight (and I'll name those below), and I'd only give the best performance of the night a B+. Harsh, I know. Onward!

Jamar Rogers: Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life”
Man, 1998-9 was all about comfortable, inoffensive pop rock, wasn't it? Everything from Vertical Horizon to Natalie Imbruglia was moody, gray-sky pop, and Bon Jovi's "It's My Life" sticks out for me as a sprawling cirrus cloud from that era. As such, Jamar Rogers' adequate vocal served the song well, but that's like saying he came prepared with an umbrella for a light drizzle. He handled the job, but the job was a...

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

American Idol host Ryan Seacrest said yesterday that producers are trying to figure out an appropriate homage for the late Whitney Houston — who had reacted positively to a possible season 11 guest-mentoring spot just days before her death. Whitney had always been one of those untouchable, “hmmm…maybe don’t go there” artists on musical competition shows, but there were always a few brave souls who got in there and wanted to feel the heat with their idol.

Last season, Crystal Bowersox was hands down the clear winner over Lee DeWyze, and yet Lee won. Why? To get wildly, obnoxiously reductive for a second, I think in part it was because Casey James’ fans were more into voting for another cute boy troubadour than a singer-songwriter mama with dreadlocks. Voter migration likely had an even bigger influence on the outcome of season 8, when Danny Gokey’s fans clearly flocked more to Kris Allen’s wholesome song stylings than Adam Lambert’s platform-shoed glam pop. And in season 6, it’s a safe bet that Melinda Doolittle and Lakisha Jones...

For those of you discouraged by Thursday’s results, keep in mind that Chris Daughtry also finished fourth on “Idol” ... along with superstars like Lakisha Jones and Anthony Fedorov. Wait, who? Exactly. Catty comments aside, it really makes no difference how these Final Four place, or how the Top 10 placed, for that matter. (Anyone remember a little lady named Pia Toscano?) They’ll all go on to bigger things and the shine in their stars will make Taylor Hicks look like a low wattage bulb in comparison. But back to the suspense. “Tonight, regardless...

The top of tonight’s American Idol telecast was slightly altered from the way the show usually opens: The three judges were already sitting when Ryan introduced them, whereas Idol’s announcer usually gives the trio a proper introduction as they walk out from behind the big screen on the stage. Did you notice that change at all? Maybe it mattered none to you all out there who were watching on TV, but as someone who was in the Idoldome, I will tell you for sure that you missed a glimpse of something very important because of the seemingly harmless alteration: J.

When Jennifer Lopez appeared on "American Idol" in 2007 and pronounced her love for the infamous Sanjaya Malakar, who could have predicted that the diva-turned-guest mentor would one day return to the reality competition?

"American Idol's" Season 9 finale showdown between Crystal Bowersox and Lee Dewyze is here! The usual suspects around the blogosphere are making their predictions and placing their bets about who will snag this year's crown. But who better to share first-hand experience of the finale then "American Idol" Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta.
Zap2it sat down with Archie and former Idol contenders Kimberly Caldwell and Lakisha Jones at the At&T U-verse Lounge in the W Hollywood. And we sure did have a great afternoon kicking it at the hotel with this "American Idol" trio.
In the first installment of our Archuleta sit-down, we pick his brain on how he thinks Bowersox and Dewyze are feeling right at this moment -- or shall we say the "Idol" moment. Because to borrow from "Idol" Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks, this is Crystal and Lee's now.

Zap2it caught up with "American Idol" season 6 finalist Lakisha Jones at the swanky W hotel's At&T U-verse lounge in Hollywood to chat about the "Idol" Season 9 finale showdown between Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze.

I just wish 'em both luck because I once too was in this place ... and also had that goal in mind of winning something."
Did she ever think that perhaps it was better to go out earlier in the competition? "I wanted to win," Lakisha declares and then laughs, "I think America still got it wrong."
What does Lakisha think of this year's finalists? "[Lee] has a very humbling spirit. I just see that he's very grateful for the opportunity. I...

As part of the ramp-up to "Idol Gives Back," past "American Idol" contestants are volunteering at food banks around the country.
One of the charities receiving the "Idol Gives Back" aid is Feeding America and in addition to donating money, the past Idols are helping with the Feeding America backpack program.
The idea is that children have food during the week when they are in school, but once the weekend comes around, they might be going hungry. These backpacks are filled with nutritious things like apple juice, tuna, milk, mashed potatoes and spaghetti and meatballs. The kids can pick up the backpacks on Fridays and return them on Mondays, then pick them up again the following Friday and so on. Also included in the backpacks are informational packets about nutritional food.

Kevin Winter/Getty Images It’s another girl for Lakisha Jones! Taking to her Twitter account, the American Idol alum announced the birth of her daughter, Ava Larynn Davis, with husband Larry Davis.
While Lakisha stayed mum on details surrounding the birth, the songstress couldn’t help but sing praise for baby girl’s highly anticipated — and overdue! — arrival.
“She was late but so worth the wait.”
Baby Ava joins 6 ½-year-old big sister Brionne, Lakisha’s daughter from a previous relationship, at home. According to the new mother-of-two, adjusting to life with a newborn once again is taking a bit of time! “At home getting back into baby mode, [it's] been 6 yrs,” she writes.
Lakisha and Larry will celebrate their one-year wedding anniversary next month. The pregnancy was confirmed in March, with Lakisha revealing baby-on-the-way was a second daughter in May.
