Pink Floyd boasts a discography that evokes dynamic emotions and moods, all conveyed within the expansive, experimental mold of progressive rock that feels timeless. Countless franchises, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe, have used tracks from the band's impressive work in their films. For instance, "Interstellar Overdrive" was featured in "Doctor Strange" to convey the nature of Stephen Strange's life before it turned upside-down, while "Time" was used in "Eternals" to set the tone of its worldbuilding. Since both seasons of "Loki" also feature retro-tinted soundscapes that harken to branched timelines and similar cosmic events, it is not a stretch to assume that the show's music was inspired by Pink Floyd.
There is good reason for this assumption, as the show's "Tva Theme," which plays at the end of every episode, sounds remarkably similar to Pink Floyd's "Have A Cigar." There is a haunting effect in how the guitar and bass ramp up the mystery,...

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige removed a key element from Loki Season 2's ending according to the show's composer Natalie Holt.
Throughout the Multiverse Saga, the Marvel boss provided several notes to previous projects under Phase 4 and Phase 5.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse director Sam Raimi revealed in the film's audio commentary Feige wanted to remove the first encounter between Strange and Mordo in Earth-838 since he felt that "it was a little corny," but the filmmaker refused.

The following article contains spoilers for "Loki" season 2.
That's it. "Loki" season 2 is over, and it appears that Loki (Tom Hiddleston) has taken over as the God of Time. Yes, yes, I know. It's the God of Stories, but he's sitting there in his throne, holding all the strands of time in his hands, keeping the multiverse from collapsing, so it's time to me. It also looks like he's taken over for He Who Remains/Kang (Jonathan Majors), which may allow the Marvel Cinematic Universe to move away from the character in response to Majors' legal issues. Oh, and let's not forget that Kang was beaten by ants in "Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania," so how much of a threat could this guy really be, anyway?
As for Hiddleston, he might feel he's done playing the God of Mischief for good -- although, depending on what Marvel Studios decides to...

You may recall that the first ever episode of Loki was called “Glorious Purpose”, and so is the last, coming full circle as the God of Mischief finally evolves into the God of Stories. For everyone else, the possibilities are now infinite, but for Loki there is now just one life to lead: sat upon a throne, just as he once coveted, alone forever. I am not okay.
For all the predictions we threw around about how this series would end, I doubt many saw all this coming, and it feels both refreshing and heartbreaking. The episode does, however, explore some of the other directions the story could have gone, giving Loki the opportunity to kill Sylvie or somehow succeed in fixing the loom. It also includes a rather expected reveal that He Who Remains has been playing 5D chess with Loki the entire season, but...

What separates Loki from the rest of Marvel’s Disney+ series is its bold and inspired choices across every department, and chief among them is Natalie Holt’s genre-bending score.
The British composer brought the otherworldly sound of the theremin back to the fore, calling to mind the sci-fi and genre films of the ‘50s. She also created instant emotion through the nyckelharpa, a Nordic instrument that has both fiddle and harp qualities. The result of Holt’s efforts has led to one of Marvel’s most memorable scores, if not the most, as well as two Emmy nominations and two high-profile jobs as the composer of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Batgirl.
On Loki season two, Holt has doubled down on experimentation alongside her thereminist, Charlie Draper. She even cameoed as one of the band members who performed in the 1890s beer hall that director Kasra Farahani’s “1893” recreated. In between setups,...

Few things in life are as enticing as Tom Hiddleston in a suit, so for some viewers, that might be reason enough to check out the second season of Marvel’s time-traveling series “Loki,” which returned this week and finds the God of Mischief teaming up with Mobius (Owen Wilson) and B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) to save the Tva after Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) killed He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) at the end of the first season. But we can give you a few more reasons to check out the exciting Season 2 premiere, which is now streaming on Disney+.
First, the addition of Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan as a scene-stealing tech guru allows the show to explore more of the secretive Tva while reminding us just how wonderful it is to see him in front of the camera again. Additionally, the intriguing production design of Kasra Farahani and striking score...

Loki is back to try and save the Marvel Universe in more ways than one as the second season of his MCU solo show returns to Disney+ this month. It’s the only live-action MCU series to get a second season so far, and as the premiere kicks off it’s incredibly easy to see why. Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, and the rest of the Loki cast really do make the show’s near-incomprehensible time travel story utterly compelling.

It's not out of line to wonder whether we've hit an inflection point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. How many times can a franchise dangle that tantalizing football in front of its fans, coax countless viewers to build up a full head of steam in the hopes of having their sky-high expectations met again and again, and then snatch that prize away right at the last second? Recent history suggests that a shared universe built primarily on the promise of the next big thing to come does, in fact, have an expiration date -- or, at the very least, a moment of truth where over a decade of goodwill finally threatens to run out. After a series of low points poked several glaring holes in the McU's once-impenetrable armor, from divisive entries like "Eternals" and "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" to unmistakable misfires such as "Thor: Love and Thunder,...

Three months from now, the Weeknd might just have an Emmy to place alongside his four Grammys and his Oscar nomination.
That’s because he joins a dozen other music superstars — including Dolly Parton, Common, Ryan Tedder, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Meshell Ndegeocello — who have entered work in this year’s Emmy competition.
Voting began yesterday in the seven music categories. Approximately 550 members of the Academy’s music branch will cast ballots, although viewing the hundreds of entries before voting ends on June 26 is an impossible task, Academy officials privately concede.
The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, is among the 19 entries in the Music Direction category. He submitted “The Weeknd Live at Sofi Stadium,” an HBO special that aired in February. If nominated, he’s likely to be up against such past winners as Adam Blackstone and Rickey Minor (“The Oscars”).

Music has always been an integral part of the “Star Wars” universe, dating back to the John Williams scores for the original movie trilogy. So will Emmy voters recognize one, two or all three of the recent “Star Wars” TV series in the scoring categories?
Vying for consideration: the 12-part “Andor,” with music by Emmy-winning, Oscar-nominated Nicholas Britell (“Succession”); the six-part “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” with a new theme by Williams and score by English composer Natalie Holt (“Loki”); and the eight-part third season of “The Mandalorian,” with music by Joseph Shirley. All aired on Disney+.

This time around, the artist-forward collectible brand is delivering on the goods with a three-lp edition of the stirring, synth-y "Loki" original soundtrack from composer Natalie Holt. According to Mondo's official website, the new release is packed with goodies, from the multi-colored albums and their individual sleeves to an album cover with all-new artwork and a sneaky little item left behind by the Time Variance Authority -- a file folder insert that comes with the set.
Marvel fatigue may finally be setting in, but fans definitely showed up for "Loki" when it premiered on Disney+ in 2021, and the show had plenty of elements worth showing up for. The television academy first formally acknowledged the art of small screen music composition by honoring the “Dragnet” score in 1955, and they have similarly awarded other series every year since 1968. Since 2019, only continuing scripted shows have been allowed to compete for the Best Music for Series Emmy, while others are now either relegated to the Best Music for Limited Series or Best Music for Documentary Series categories.
The 2022 slate of Best Music for Series nominees includes comedies “The Flight Attendant” (HBO Max), “Only Murders in the Building” (Hulu) and “Schmigadoon!” (Apple TV+) and dramas “Loki” (Disney+), “Severance” (Apple TV+) and “Succession” (HBO). Each nominated composer, most of whom have been recognized before, currently has a shot at achieving their first victory in this category. The playing field sounds fairly level, but let’s look closer to see if any contenders have a leg up. Be sure to make your Emmy predictions...

For the first time since 2016, all of the artists nominated for this year’s Best Main Title Theme Music Emmy are new to the category. The five opening tunes vying for this prize are those from “Loki” (Disney+), “Only Murders in the Building” (Hulu), “Severance” (Apple TV+), “Squid Game” (Netflix) and “The White Lotus” (HBO).

Is there any better way to guarantee people are going to keep talking about a project than keeping it locked away from prying eyes? Such is the quandary presented by "Batgirl" and "Scoob!: Holiday Haunt," two films that might've come and gone with only so much fanfare had Warner Bros. Discovery released them as originally planned. Instead, the movies were shelved at the eleventh hour as the result of what amounts to a glorified tax write-off, at a point where the pair were either near or already well into the final stages of post-production.
The optics are particularly bad when it comes to "Batgirl," a superhero film that features a Latina woman as its lead ("In the Heights" star Leslie Grace), a script by a British-Asian woman ("Bumblebee" and "Birds of Prey" writer Christina Hodson), two Belgian-Moroccan directors ("Bad Boys for Life" and "Ms. Marvel" duo Adil & Bilall), and a...

Natalie Holt has had a busy 12 months that included landing two Emmy nominations for Loki, working with idol John Williams on Obi-Wan Kenobi and meeting with Danny Elfman in preparation for her work on HBO Max’s now-canceled Batgirl film. But when Holt began her journey on Loki, all of those things seemed rather unimaginable.
Loki came to Holt in 2020 while she was stuck at home in the U.K. in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic. During the day, the single parent would help her daughter with school work, while dreaming up music for the show that stars Tom Hiddleston as Marvel’s God of Mischief (and is now filming a second season).

According to Netflix, the Skip Intro button is pressed 136 million times in a typical day. Moreover, the feature has been adopted by streamers industry-wide. So what does it mean for a potentially iconic title theme? While approaches vary, the composers nominated for outstanding original main title theme music at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards are united in confronting the slight with good humor and unbridled creativity.
“It makes people want to up their game and to do something so catchy that people want to hear it,” says Natalie Holt, nominated for Disney+’s “Loki.” She compares it to writing a pop song: “Things that don’t get stuck in your head go in the bin.”
Siddhartha Khosla, a nominee for Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” also uses a songwriting metaphor, calling his theme “the biggest, hookiest part of the chorus.”

For “Batgirl” composer Natalie Holt, Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision to indefinitely shelve the film was a giant “disappointment” to the DC family.
Emmy nominee Holt revealed to Discussing Film that she had spent over a year crafting the original score for the DC film starring Leslie Grace, Brendan Fraser, Jk Simmons, and Michael Keaton, which was set for an upcoming HBO Max release. On August 2, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed the 90 million superhero movie was given the axe for tax purposes.
“I had written about an hour and a half of music,” Holt explained. “I’ve been working on it for a year. So yeah, pretty sad what’s happened to it.”
Holt previously scored Disney+ series “Loki,” for which she is Emmy-nominated. “Ms. Marvel” directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who helmed “Batgirl,” connected with Holt after her Marvel work.

It’s been two weeks since Warner Bros. announced it would not be releasing “Batgirl” in theaters or on HBO Max, instead opting to take a tax write-off on the 90 million comic book tentpole. In a new interview with Discussing Film, composer Natalie Holt called the studio’s decision to ax the film “a massive shame.” Holt, an Emmy nominee for her work on Marvel’s “Loki,” worked for a year on the “Batgirl” score and had 90 minutes of original music written when the news hit that the film was being shelved.
“I had written about an hour and a half of music,” Holt said. “I’ve been working on it for a year. So yeah, pretty sad what’s happened to it. I was on set last Christmas, [directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah] really loved ‘Loki’ and that’s why I got picked to do the score for ‘Batgirl.

After two years without an in-person Comic-Con, fans are definitely holding out for the appearance of a few heroes. Fortunately, the ongoing pandemic — and skepticism over whether the Con will truly enforce those mask protocols — won’t keep the newest caped crusaders from braving the annual nerdfest that kicks off Thursday in San Diego.
Marvel shouldn’t disappoint with sneak peeks of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and the upcoming She-Hulk: Attorney at Law for Disney+. But it’s not expected to shower Hall H with an embarrassment of riches like it did in 2019; some sources believe Marvel is saving it all up for Disney’s fan convention D23 during the second weekend of September, specifically in regards to new projects. There’s still stuff we haven’t seen, specifically the Fantastic Four reboot, Mahershala Ali in The Blade, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (due May 5), The Marvels (July 28, 2023) and The Mutants.

Updated with Saturday schedule: After a two-year in-person hiatus due to Covid, San Diego Comic-Con is raging back with a big footprint by streaming, TV and, well, as far as big screen feature films, let’s just say they’re creeping back.
Marvel will make some big waves with its upcoming new movies (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) and Disney+ series (She-Hulk), but it will keep some powder dry for D23 in early September. Dwayne Johnson will be booming with New Line/DC’s Black Adam, along with Shazam: Fury of the Gods star Zachary Levi. However, while Sony will be skipping as the Spider-Verse animated sequel is set for next year. Paramount will be giving fans an early look at Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. And there’s Kevin Smith with Clerks III.

Natalie Holt has now created a new sound for two major franchise characters. The composer previously scored Marvel's "Loki" series and most recently lent her talents to "Obi-Wan Kenobi." No pressure, of course -- there's only 40 years of history, fan expectations, and Lucasfilm involved. But with director Deborah Chow, Holt helped tell the story of characters leaving the dark and seeing the light.
It was a very different experience for Holt compared to her time on "Loki," which she composed during lockdown and never met anyone involved in person. All recordings were done remotely, which made her miss recording with...

For Loki, composer Natalie Holt knew that there were two tracks that were essential to the score. After creating themes for Loki and the Tva, Holt found her score easily branching out to create themes for the other characters as well.
Loki takes place after Avengers: Endgame, when the god of mischief escapes and creates a parallel universe that alerts the Time Variance Authority, or Tva. When given a choice between helping the Tva or meeting his demise, Loki sets off on a time-traveling thriller in search of a much greater threat.
Holt worked closely with director Kate Herron on figuring out what instruments and musical styles would work for a character like Loki. When the pandemic shutdown production, she was given more time to experiment which led to a varied score that perfectly captures the chaotic nature of Loki.
Deadline: What did director Kate Herron have in mind for the score?...

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded into television, its musical reach has also grown, embracing diversity both in terms of its composers and the music they make.
English composer Natalie Holt (pictured above) brought unexpected sonorities to “Loki”; Cairo-based Hesham Nazih added specific Egyptian sounds to “Moon Knight”; and American composer Laura Karpman employed a traditional orchestra and choir on the animated “What If…?”
“Loki is sort of a likable baddie,” says Holt, “a grand, Machiavellian, Shakespearean character, so I wanted some kind of gravitas, classical weight, to his theme.”
Yet, in last summer’s six-part series, the Norse god of mischief (Tom Hiddleston) is also playing with time, which suggested more unusual sounds: the wailing of a theremin and its equally eerie French cousin, the ondes Martenot.
“I’d been listening to [Lithuanian theremin virtuoso] Clara Rockmore and [BBC Radiophonic Workshop pioneer] Delia Derbyshire,” Holt explains. “The sound of the theremin has stayed with me...

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi Episode 3
What kind of monster is Darth Vader? This week’s Obi-Wan Kenobi presents Vader as both terrifying and vulnerable. While Part III doesn’t always nail the visuals, the confrontation between Obi-Wan and Vader brings back classic Star Wars thrills.
Obi-Wan and Leia head to Mapuzo, a once-pastoral planet the Empire is now strip-mining. He’s trying to reach Qui-Gon through the Force. Instead, he’s confronted only with memories and visions of Anakin and the other tragedies in his life. Leia is more hopeful, but knows little about the Force or how evil the Empire can be. On the Imperial side of things, the Third Sister calls Darth Vader himself. The Inquisitors are still fighting among themselves. The Third Sister and Fifth Brother clash over who gets to bring Obi-Wan’s location to Vader. And in...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Obi-Wan Kenobi” Episode 1 and Episode 2, “Part 1” and “Part II.”]
About 23 minutes into the premiere of “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” an old Star Wars friend shows up. First there’s an establishing shot of an unfamiliar city and planet, and then a montage of various people assisting a small child get dressed in a pristine white tunic with purple accents. There can be no mistaking that elaborate hairdo, even on such a tiny head: This is young Leia Organa.
Well, not exactly. It’s a friend Leia enlists to play a prank on her mother, but with a triumphant swell of John Williams and Natalie Holt’s score we quickly cut to the real Leia (Vivien Lyra Blair), sprinting through the forest while her braids trail behind her.
For too long — and probably still — Star Wars has been unable to quit Luke Skywalker. The hero of George Lucas’ original films, portrayed by Mark Hamill,...

“That is the role that music should play in a scene,” declares acclaimed Korean composer Jung Jae-il (“Parasite”) about the role of a composer on a series like the Netflix blockbuster “Squid Game,” on which he juxtaposes the mood of each scene with a variety of musical styles, from bombastic percussion, to distorted synth-rock, to mellifluous orchestral pieces. For our recent webchat, he adds that “the music should not be in the foreground of the scene, but at the same time, music can show something completely different to the scene.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen aren’t the only “Star Wars” icons returning to a galaxy far, far away.
Legendary composer John Williams unveiled his long-awaited theme song for Disney+ series “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” now streaming. While composer Natalie Holt leads the score for the “Obi-Wan” series, Williams crafted the theme song in less than two weeks between composing “Indiana Jones 5” and Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans.”
The four-minute “Obi-Wan” theme song starts tentatively at first before heightening with grand sweeping strings that build toward a teased climax. Undercurrents of a darker Darth Vader theme prey upon the main scales, with nods toward the iconic original “Star Wars” theme, for which he won an Oscar in 1978.
“[Williams] really wanted to write that theme because [Obi-Wan Kenobi] was the one character that he didn’t write the theme for in the original movie,” series composer Holt previously said. “I think he had two weeks...

If there’s one problem that just about every “Star Wars” actor seems to face, it’s resisting the urge to make lightsaber noises while using one on set. Fortunately, Ewan McGregor found a workaround for the issue on the new Disney+ series “Obi-Wan Kenobi”: playing John Williams’ score while filming.
McGregor has long joked about how much he struggled on the prequel trilogy with not making the sound effects himself while wielding a lightsaber, as has Anakin Skywalker actor Hayden Christensen. Both have poked fun at themselves over the years for ruining takes because they were making the iconic noises. And apparently, even 17 years after the last of the prequels, the urge to do so is still strong.
“I think I still do them in my mind, for sure,” McGregor told TheWrap with a laugh. “It’s difficult not to, you know?”

The world of “Star Wars” returns in a big way this month with “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” a Disney+ series that sees Ewan McGregor reprising his role from George Lucas’ prequel trilogy. But for many, it just wouldn’t be “Star Wars” without John Williams.
The Oscar winner’s iconic music still defines the massive science fiction franchise, and even as he steps back and lets younger composers work on “Star Wars” projects, his presence continues to be felt.
Williams is hard at work on “Indiana Jones 5” and “The Fabelmans,” so he was unavailable to score the show. Composing duties fell to “Loki” and “Paddington” composer Natalie Holt, who recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the process of working on the series. It turns out that Williams couldn’t completely stay away from “Star Wars,” and still found time to contribute some music to the upcoming series.

For a long time, it was impossible to separate John Williams' virtuoso scores from the "Star Wars" franchise. Over the last 15 years, however, things have slowly begun to change on that front.
It began with Kevin Kiner's first-rate work on the animated TV series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" and "Star Wars Rebels," both of which honor Williams' classical orchestral style while bringing their own flavor to the table. It began with Kevin Kiner's first-rate work on the animated TV series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" and "Star Wars Rebels," both of which honor Williams' classical orchestral style while bringing their own flavor to the table. The announcement of winners for the ASCAP Screen Music Awards, being held virtually again for 2022 and announced Monday morning, included revealing the top vote-getters for several Composers’ Choice Awards, including the scores for “Encanto” and “The White Lotus.”
Germaine Franco prevailed for film score of the year for “Encanto.” Cristobal Tapia de Veer won two of these peer-voted awards, for television score of the year and television theme as well, for “The White Lotus. The video game score of the year honor went to Wataru Hokoyama for “Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.” Triumphing in the documentary score of the year category was Amanda Jones for “Dreamland: The Burning of Black Wall Street.”
Those five Composers’ Choice Awards come on top of ASCAP’s traditional Screen Music Awards, which collect date to honor the most-consumed music of the year in the fields of TV, film and video games, with dozens of winners cited.

While “Loki” was a new show for Disney+, Loki the character (Tom Hiddleston) was far from a fresh face for fans who’ve followed the mischievous scamp through six films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And that’s precisely why composer Natalie Holt felt it was an advantage when she joined the show.
“I haven’t had anyway the experience of working on a show that’s already kind of fleshed out — you know the character, who the actor is, you can see them already,” Holt tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “So I was quite inspired just by Loki, the character of Loki and the Marvel movies that I’d watch. There was a lot to grab hold of and obviously reading the script and seeing what Loki gets to do, you could already visualize it because you already have that narrative information from all the movies.

Natalie Holt has been set as the composer for Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi, becoming the first woman to score a live-action Star Wars project. She broke the news in an interview with Vanity Fair published on Friday, also confirming reports that longtime Star Wars composer John Williams will provide the show’s main title theme, in his first live-action Star Wars TV outing.
Holt teased that Williams’ past work on the franchise will serve as “tentpoles” for her own—and that she will look to bring her own “new and fresh” interpretation of Star Wars music to the series, via elements she can’t yet reveal. “It’s been glorious, working with my hero,” she said with reference to Williams, “and also bringing my own voice to the show.”
Holt also shared that Williams’ as-yet-unheard theme is “reflective” and “just entirely appropriate” for the series.

The enduring legacy of Star Wars characters comes not only from the actors or the story but also from the amazing themes created for them by composer John Williams. Just mentioning the names “Darth Vader” or “Rey” recalls soaring strings and punching brass, as iconic as the former’s black mask and the latter’s white robes. But what about Obi-Wan Kenobi, one of the central figures of the first two trilogies? You probably don’t associate his character with a particular music cue, and with good reason. There isn’t one.
But all that is about to change. In a conversation with Vanity Fair, Obi-Wan Kenobi composer Natalie Holt revealed that Williams specifically requested to write a theme for the Jedi Master. “Obi-Wan is a legacy character that John hadn’t written a theme for because he died quite early on in A New Hope,” Holt explained. When word...
