The much-awaited return of the ghost detectives on the silver screen is finally available on Netflix, and the fans seem to love it. Based on the DC Comics characters of the same name by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner, the Netflix series is created by Steve Yockey and it follows the story of two ghost detectives who decide not to ascent to their afterlives to stay on Earth and investigate the crimes involving the supernatural. Dead Boy Detectives exists in the same universe as Netflix’s hit DC fantasy drama series The Sandman, and while it is different from The Sandman in its story and visuals, the Dead Boy Detectives seem to be connecting with the fans. So, if you loved the charm and supernatural shenanigans in Dead Boy Detectives here are some similar shows you should check out next.

In any given year, British TV can be relied on to provide plenty in the way of crime drama, and 2023 was no different. Between these returning series and newcomers A Town Called Malice, Blue Lights, Marlow, Payback, Rebus, Steeltown Murders, The Gold, The Sixth Commandment, Wolf and more, crime continued to flourish on the small screen.
Happily though, that was far from all that UK TV offered this year. There was fantasy too, in the form of Netflix’s South London super-powers drama Supacell, ghost detective series Lockwood & Co., Greek and Roman mythology series Kaos, and sci-fi in Prime Video’s The Rig.
Add to all those the romances, dramas inspired by real-life, and several other book adaptations, period and otherwise plus music-based dramas Champion and This Town, and it was a pretty full slate.

Fans of British TV ate well in 2023. The year said goodbye to some excellent British TV shows with the finales of extraordinary crime dramas Happy Valley, Top Boy, Guilt and Endeavour – four very different shows set in four very different places. We waved off comedies Sex Education and Ghosts, and welcomed back some exciting returns in the form of Black Mirror, Good Omens and of course, Doctor Who.
And then there were the new additions – superhero comedy Extraordinary, police newbie drama Blue Lights, mind-bending comic book adaptation Bodies and chilling true crime series The Sixth Commandment.
It’s hard to separate the pack, but using a complex system of pulleys and levers, a gunge machine and – unfortunately necessary for the person who nominated The Idol – an oubliette, Den of Geek polled its writers and drew up two lists of the best TV of the year, one for American shows and...

Another one bites the dust as Netflix has canceled the supernatural series "Lockwood and Co." after just one season. This cancelation may come as a bit of a surprise, given that the show, which is adapted from Jonathan Stroud's popular series of books, was critically well-liked and seemingly found its audience. Be that as it may, we will not be getting more episodes.
According to Variety, Netflix opted not to renew the series, which debuted in early 2023. It featured a cast led by Ruby Stokes ("Bridgerton"), as well as relative newcomers like Cameron Chapman and Ali Hadji-Heshmati. Taking to Instagram, Stroud addressed the cancelation with an air of gratitude, saying the following:
"I'd like to thank everybody who worked so hard to create something so special. It has been a joy working with Joe, Rachael, Nira, Brad and all my other friends at Complete Fiction. They made a show...

From writer/director Joe Cornish (Attack the Block, The Kid Who Would Be King, Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn), “Lockwood & Co.” premiered on Netflix back in January, and we’ve learned that the series has already been given the axe.
Netflix has cancelled “Lockwood & Co.” after one season, the latest in a long line of streaming shows that have been cancelled by Netflix before they had a chance to build an audience.
Variety reports this afternoon, “Variety understands that while Netflix was very pleased with the show, and especially the work that had gone into it, viewing numbers didn’t meet the threshold to greenlight a second season. But Complete Fiction, which was founded by Cornish together with Edgar Wright, Nira Park and Rachael Prior, will continue to work with Netflix. Lockwood & Co. has been making waves on Netflix since it first dropped at the end of January 2023. The supernatural series has drawn in viewers of all ages, but young fans have found a lot to love in the show, which features a talented cast of performers. Lockwood & Co. is based on a popular book series, and while the episodes remain relatively consistent with the events of the books, there were a few things that creators had no choice but to change. In a recent interview, creator/director Joe Cornish opened up about one specific scene that he had to cut from Lockwood & Co. because it was too expensive.

Props play a huge part in ensuring a movie or TV show set comes to life, and as such, productions tend to allocate huge budgets for them. However, accidents do occur sometimes, and props get destroyed. While there are usually backup props for any damage caused, the destroyed prop can affect a shoot. One key Lockwood & Co. prop was ruined after an actor accidentally spilled milk on it.
‘Lockwood & Co.’ is now streaming on Netflix
Lockwood & Co. is a new Netflix series set in an alternate reality where ghosts are real, and touch is deadly to the living. The rise of these ghosts has led to the creation of an industry responsible for ending them.
The story begins with a flashback of a 13-year-old Lucy sitting in an office with her mother, who has just learned that her daughter has a particular gift for “listening” to apparitions.

Lockwood & Co. is Netflix‘s latest hit, thanks to its excellent storytelling and cast. The series follows a young trio of ghost exterminators as they find their footing in the extermination business and also navigate friendships and all life has to offer. The show’s whole premise is about its characters fighting the supernatural, but do the actors themselves really believe in ghosts?

Lockwood & Co. takes place in an alternate reality where the living exist in the same plane as the dead, whose ghosts have become a huge nuisance that they have resulted in the rise of a whole industry dedicated to exterminating them.
Although the ghosts in the Lockwood & Co. universe are similar to rats, the difference between them and common rats is that rats don’t necessarily lead to people’s deaths. The ghosts in the series can kill...

Lockwood & Co., the latest supernatural series to drop on Netflix, is a hit with many fans of shows like Wednesday and Locke & Key. The British show takes place 50 years after the start of “The Problem,” a sudden rise in deaths caused by ghosts. What do we mean when we talk about Young Adult fiction? Utter the term YA, and you will most likely picture something resembling Lockwood & Co. Netflix’s newest No 1 series has all the hallmarks of a YA smash. A mixed-gender group of teenage protagonists. A healthy dollop of the supernatural. A shelf-load of lore. Adapted from novels by Jonathan Stroud and created by Attack the Block’s Joe Cornish, the series follows a trio of juvenile ghost-hunters, played by Ruby Stokes, Cameron Chapman and Ali Hadji-Heshmati. It’s a CGI-laden fantasy melodrama, big on quips, and even bigger on action. And yet, Lockwood & Co also follows another of Netflix’s time-tested YA rules: it’s not actually very good.
Look back through the past five years of original programming, and you’ll see that the YA market is a well that Netflix has returned to many times. But the results have been mixed,...

The creator of Lockwood and Co has given Netflix the perfect reason to renew the series.
Since its release last month, the show has become a sleeper hti for the streaming service, which would typically make a season two renewal a certainty.
However in recent years Netflix has made a habit of cancelling shows despite them being at the top of the service’s most-watched charts, leading to widespread criticism.
Lockwood and Co fans enjoying the series are urging the service not to cancel the show – and Attack the Block director Cornish himself has explained why that would be a disappointing decision.
Firstly, season one covers the first two books in Jonathan Stroud’s books series: The Screaming Staircase and The Whispering Skull.
Speaking to Empire in the new issue, Cornish confirms that the initial run of Lockwood & Co covers the first two books in Stroud’s five-book series.

Joe Cornish’s teen ghosthunter drama Lockwood and Co. launches on Netflix globally today. The show, the streamer’s latest young-adult scripted series from the UK, stars Ruby Stokes (Bridgerton) and newcomers Cameron Chapman and Ali Hadji-Heshmati as a teen trio who run an independent ghost fighting agency in London while competing with adult-run corporate rivals.
The eight-part series, from Cornish’s Complete Fiction banner, is based on Jonathan Stroud’s books about an alternate modern world in which murderous ghosts have been attacking people since the 1960s, and only teenagers have the ability to see and repeal them. Netflix ordered it as one of seven British originals announced in December 2020. Several of these have been canned but anticipation around Lockwood has grown and reviews this week have been sparkling.

Lockwood & Co. coming to Netflix just six weeks after the streaming service cancelled its last solid adaptation of a British fantasy YA book series in The Bastard Son & The Devil Itself, feels a bit like getting a new puppy after your last one was run over. You’re happy it’s here, obviously, but there’s a tug of wariness about getting too attached.
It’s very easy to get attached to this eight-episode ghost story about three teens running a supernatural detective agency. The cast is charming, the characters are likeable and their world – in which a nightly curfew and platoons of rapier-bearing teens protects London from spectral attack – is solidly conceived.

The jumpscare is a fundamental building block of the horror genre — they frighten the wits out of us right when our guard is down. An effective jumpscare can be pretty thrilling or jarring depending on the intensity of it, but as most horror fans will tell you, they're hard not to be fond of.
While certain filmmakers heavily rely on jump scares in film and television, there's much to be said about storytellers who prefer to build an atmosphere of fear. It could be a dimly lit home where the protagonist is seen walking down a large, empty hallway. It could be a glimpse of a terrorizing shadow in the dark. Perhaps they're both taking place against the backdrop of eerie music — or pin-drop, anxiety-inducing silence. Both evoke a consistent feeling of fear, but how do you replicate that consistency in a show where its characters fight with ghosts?

Joe Cornish is back with another story about kids fighting for our future. The director of "Attack the Block" and "The Kid Who Would Be King" is the showrunner behind Netflix's "Lockwood & Co." The adaptation of Jonathan Stroud's book series pits young folks against deadly ghosts. In season 1, Anthony Lockwood (Cameron Chapman), George Karim (Ali Hadji-Heshmati), and Lucy Carlyle (Ruby Stokes) join forces as a scrappy team of paranormal investigators in a world haunted by the dead.
The show is another project from Cornish that pays tribute to '80s movies. It's not nostalgia; the past is a key part of the story, not just an aesthetic or an excuse to have a rocking soundtrack. For his latest screen project, Joe Cornish_, a ghost-hunting mystery-adventure, set in a version of our world where spectres are an everyday problem, and teams of, well, ghost-busters make it their business to take them down. Cornish’ series adapts the novels by Jonathan Stroud, and according to the director there’s plenty more mileage in the source material beyond Season 1.
Speaking to Empire in the new issue, Cornish confirms that the initial run of Lockwood & Co covers the first two books in Stroud’s five-book series. “So there’s definitely a couple more seasons in the books,” he points out – going on to say that the continued story is one sure to satisfy viewers. “One of the things I don’t like about episodic telly is when it doesn’t know how it’s going to end,” he says. “You get that thing Lost had where it’s all promise and no delivery.

In "Attack The Block," Joe Cornish pit a teenage street gang against alien invaders. In "The Kid Who Would Be King," a middle school boy faced off against the powerful sorceress Morgana. So continuing the trend of British youngsters being just a little out of their depths in the fight against a powerful, mythical force, the writer-director is back with an adaptation of Jonathan Stroud's supernatural YA series, "Lockwood & Co." Which means, you guessed it, a team of teenagers are banding together to take down ghosts.
This ghost-busting adventure is set in a world where spirits are no big surprise — instead they're a constant, much too common terror. London, like the rest of their world, is overrun with ghosts and it comes down to major corporations to employ the agents capable of keeping them at bay. But those corporate shills aren't the only ones keeping people safe — there are also small agencies,...

If there’s a central preoccupation of Joe Cornish series Lockwood & Co is a ghost-busting adventure, set in a world where sinister spirits are a regular occurrence in our everyday lives – and agents are employed to keep them at bay. While most are major corporations, Lockwood & Co is an independent ghost-hunting business run by two teenage boys, who welcome Ruby Stokes’ psychically-gifted Lucy into their ranks. Watch the trailer:
Doesn’t that look like a spooky, stylish treat? Based on Jonathan Stroud’s novels, the show presents a world similar to ours, but in which the rise of spectral terrors has had an impact on the way technology has developed – with an analogue, archaic feel. Meanwhile, the ghosts themselves look suitably scary, with sword-swinging action in the mix – and Cornish’s knack for dry wit surely means there’ll be some comedy there too. Here’s the official synopsis: “In London,...

Movies aren’t the only place where horror continues to thrive as we begin 2023; all signs point to a banner year for the genre on the small screen in addition to the big screen.
On the smaller screen, 2023 brings the return of acclaimed favorites “Yellowjackets,” “The Witcher,” and “Evil,” plus “The Walking Dead” spinoffs, the final season of “Servant,” and more. And here’s hoping “Chucky” gets that season three renewal announcement soon.
But for all the returning series, we’re excited about the brand-new series on the horizon.
Here are thirteen new genre shows to look forward to in 2023.
The Last of Us – January 15 (HBO Max)

The world has been hit by an epidemic. An epidemic of ghosts. They started appearing in the late ‘60s; they are real, they will kill you if they touch you, and they are almost impossible to see—except, for some reason, to teenagers. This is the world of Lockwood & Co.
As you can imagine, by the 2020s, this has led history down a very different path.
“Society has changed completely. Technology has not evolved in the way that we experience it today,” showrunner Joe Cornish tells Den of Geek magazine. “There was a huge wave of terror, and then there was this discovery that metal and salt and water could repel ghosts. So these industries around ghost prevention grew up, and then it was discovered that young people could detect and see ghosts more clearly than adults.

With "Attack The Block," writer-director Joe Cornish brought an alien invasion down to the streets of South London. Nearly a decade later, he helmed "The Kid Who Would Be King," a fantastical coming-of-age tale where the weight of Arthurian legend rests on the shoulders of a middle-school boy. After taking sci-fi and fantasy in surprising new directions, Cornish is back, with his sights set on the world of the paranormal. The latest addition to Netflix's growing YA library is "Lockwood & Co.," an adaptation of the supernatural novels from Jonathan Stroud.
Like the novels, the eight-episode series follows the story of a powerful young psychic named Lucy, who joins a teen ghost-hunting agency in a world already overrun by paranormal activity. So other than a crew of teenage ghost detectives, what sets this ghost story apart from others?

There has been a casting shake-up on Netflix‘s popular period drama Bridgerton as Hannah Dodd (Anatomy of a Scandal) is set to take over the role of Francesca from Ruby Stokes for the upcoming third season. As first reported by Deadline, Dodd will play the reserved and mysterious Bridgerton sibling in Season 3. The recasting comes after Stokes left the Shondaland series and was cast as the lead in another Netflix production, the upcoming adaptation of Jonathan Stroud’s Lockwood & Co. Francesca’s presence across the first two seasons of Bridgerton has been fleeting, only appearing twice in Season 1. She did feature in the first three episodes of the second season but then disappeared without explanation for the remainder of the season as Stokes fulfilled her obligation to Lockwood & Co. “I love Francesca, but we lost her midway through Season 2,” Bridgerton creator and Seasons 1 and 2 showrunner Chris Van Dusen told TVLine earlier this year.

Hannah Dodd (“Enola Holmes”) has joined the cast of “Bridgerton” Season 3, taking over the role of Francesca Bridgerton, which had been played in Seasons 1 and 2 by Ruby Stokes.
Stokes left the series and is the lead of the upcoming Netflix series “Lockwood & Co.”
Production on “Bridgerton” Season 3 is set to begin this summer, though Netflix has yet to reveal which romance the new season will follow.
Stokes was notably absent for portions of Season 2. News of her taking the lead role in “Lockwood & Co,” which is based on the books from Jonathan Stroud, broke in March.
Dodd, who recently appeared in “Anatomy of a Scandal” as the younger version of Sienna Miller’s character, takes over the role of the second youngest Bridgerton daughter, behind Daphne and Eloise, and older than the baby of the family, Hyacinth.
