Exclusive: Terence Winter, the writer-producer known for his work on Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos and more, will team with Vincent Piazza, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way and Phiphen to develop Midge, a tragicomic feature based on an absurd but true, as-yet-untold story.
At the center of it is Thomas Midgley, Jr., the man who in the first half of the 20th century invented two of the most toxic and disastrous chemicals humankind has ever known — leaded gasoline and Freon —without having even been a chemist.
In a statement on the project, Winter told Deadline that “the only thing crazier than this story is that it hasn’t already been told.”
He’s teaming with Piazza to pen the script and both will exec produce, along with automotive journalist Jamie Lincoln Kitman, who also serves as a research consultant on the project. Phiphen’s founder Molly Conners will produce alongside Academy Award nominee Rachel Winter (Dallas Buyers Club). Director meetings are underway.
Winter is best known for creating the acclaimed HBO series Boardwalk Empire, as well as for producing and scripting dozens of episodes of The Sopranos, for which he earned three Emmy Awards. In his 25-plus years in television, he’s also won three PGA awards and four from the WGA. Also the creator of HBO’s Vinyl, he’s otherwise best known for scripting Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. More recently, he co-wrote Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love, which is out in theaters now.
Piazza is best known for his work on the acting front, having appeared in everything from Boardwalk Empire and Clint Eastwood’s Jersey Boys to the Sylvester Stallone starrer Tulsa King and IFC thriller Centigrade.
Most recently, Appian Way produced the DiCaprio starrer Killers of the Flower Moon, helmed by Scorsese, which is up this year for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Phiphen’s recent projects include the comedic thriller Coup! starring Peter Sarsgaard, which premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival and will be released by Greenwich Entertainment, and the Nicolas Cage Western Butcher’s Crossing.
Winter is repped by CAA, Lbi Entertainment and Jackoway Austen Tyerman; Piazza by Gersh, Untitled Entertainment and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman.

Jeff Ryan, Scott Cohen, Katerina Tannenbaum, Geneva Carr and Will Chase will star in “Mooch.” The crime comedy was also written and directed by Ryan, whose credits include “Mean Spirited” and “YouthMin.”
The filmmakers received an interim agreement to work on this independent production during last year’s SAG-Afrtra strike. It recently wrapped production in Lexington, Mass.
The movie focuses on a 30-year-old caddy named Shane (Ryan), who winds up with an unexpected gig as a personal private eye for a New Jersey nightclub owner. Even though he inches closer to realizing his ambitions, his personal life spirals out of control.
“When I was in high school, my friend’s dad told me I was going to fail in life because I was a ‘Mooch,’” said Ryan. “Making this film was a dream come true, and I am proud to put my dirty laundry on screen for all to enjoy.

Many stories have been told about Westward expansion, but few have focused on the impact and consequences. John Williams’ 1960 novel “Butcher’s Crossing” follows William Andrews, a Harvard student who leaves his life behind to join a buffalo-hunting expedition, facing many harsh realities on his journey.
Producer Molly Conners sat down with Variety for the film’s release (now available to buy and rent on Blu-Ray and DVD) to discuss director Gabe Polsky’s journey adapting the story, financing the film, casting its star Nicolas Cage and working with the Blackfeet Nation to tell the story about the destruction of the buffalo population in 19th century America.
There’s a surge of interest in the Western genre thanks to shows like “Yellowstone” and “1883,” was it always going to be a feature film?

Italian actor-turned-director Andrea Di Stefano, whose sleek cop thriller “Last Night of Amore” just had its U.S. premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, is in advanced stages of development on “Karski” a feature about Jan Karski, the World War II Polish resistance fighter who risked his life to blow the whistle on the Holocaust.
Di Stefano’s high-profile project, which is titled “Karski,” is being developed by New York City-based production company Phiphen Pictures, the indie founded by Molly Conners most recently behind Netflix’s “Like Father” and “It’s Bruno!,” the director said. Italy’s expanding Indiana Production, which shepherded “Amore,” is also on board.
Karski in 1942, defying great danger, twice infiltrated Warsaw’s Jewish Ghetto to witness its horrors and managed to give first-hand accounts of the Holocaust from the Warsaw Ghetto to the Allies, including U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1943. But his alarm cries fell on deaf ears.

Questlove’s Summer of Soul is up to 753 theaters as the doc about the 1969 ‘Black Woodstock’ concert in Harlem that debuted in two locations last weekend crossed into arthouse, commercial and urban venues.
Not that it was easy, said Frank Rodriguez, SVP General Sales Manager, Searchlight Pictures. “Exhibitors are eager to get back on track,” he said. “We had to push very hard in a crowded marketplace” that includes The Boss Baby: Family Business, The Forever Purge and week two of the first true post-Covid blockbuster, F9.
Rodriguez cited notable performances in Brooklyn, San Francisco and Georgetown in D.C. after what was basically an extended promo in NY and LA. Deadline is hearing from industry estimates that Thursday night came in north of $78K.

Nicolas Cage is lined up to play a buffalo hunter in an adaptation of John Williams’ novel “Butcher’s Crossing,” directed by “Red Army” helmer Gabe Polsky.
The film, which is being shopped to buyers at this week’s Cannes virtual market by sales agent and financier Altitude, is set in the 1870s and finds the “Mandy” star playing Kansas buffalo hunter Miller, who takes on a young Harvard dropout seeking his destiny out West. “Together, they embark on a harrowing journey risking life and sanity,” read promotional materials for the pic.
The film is based on the 1960 transcendentalist novel by Williams, which explores man’s relationship with the natural world and details a largely untold but significant chapter in American history. Polsky is adapting the novel alongside Liam Satre-Meloy. “1917” director Sam Mendes was believed to have been interested in adapting the book around 10 years ago.
Altitude has also secured the film for U.

A year ago the trailers and stills were creeping online in the usual way in preparation for a September 5 release date. But then suddenly The Green Inferno, Eli Roth's first film as director since 2007's Hostel II was pulled from the schedules over internal problems at financiers Worldview Entertainment. It's been in limbo ever since, but is now finally set to emerge thanks to a new deal with Jason Blum's distribution label Bh-Tilt.A bit of notoriety never hurt any horror film in the long run, but sadly The Green Inferno's woes were nothing to do with its grisly content. The prosaic reasons were apparently due to Worldview's new CEO Molly Conners baulking at the publicity-spend commitments made by her outgoing predecessor Christopher Woodrow. The situation left Us horror fans crossing their fingers that Green Inferno wouldn't turn into another distribution farrago like All The Boys Love Mandy Lane,...

Woodrow’s lawyers filed papers in New York on October 15 that cite as defendants Worldview Entertainment, Worldview COO Molly Conners, Worldview backers Maria Cestone and Sarah Johnson, as well as Worldview investors Prospect Point Capital and Roseland Ventures.
The legal action seeks damages for defamation and breach of fiduciary duty and requests the recovery of personal property confiscated on the day Woodrow was barred from entering the corporate offices leading to his “wrongful suspension as CEO” in May 2014.

“Birdman” producer Worldview Entertainment was sued on Wednesday by its former CEO Christopher Woodrow, who is seeking $55 million and liquidation of the company. Worldview principals Maria Cestone, Sarah Johnson and Molly Conners were named in the lawsuit. It follows a lawsuit that accused the former CEO of embezzlement. The legal mess around the independent film company comes the very week that Oscar contender “Birdman,” released by Fox Searchlight, debuts in theaters. Woodrow is an executive producer on the film. Woodrow exited the company in May 2014 in circumstances that have never been clarified. Also read: Worldview CEO Christopher Woodrow Exits Amid Cloud.

A rumor has been swirling around the Internet this weekend that Troma would be releasing Eli Roth's The Green Inferno (review) after the studio posted about it on its social media pages. Knowing this was highly unlikely, we reached out to Roth and can now confirm this is Not happening.
Earlier this month financier Worldview Entertainment balked at ex-ceo Christopher Woodrow’s commitment to provide the P&A (promotion and advertising) for the film. Open Road confirmed that the release date was scratched but had no further comment.
Apparently Worldview has been going through a restructure since Woodrow's abrupt and largely unexplained exit, and the company, now run by Molly Conners, put a freeze on all of his commitments and is scrutinizing every deal that was made. Green Inferno has been caught in that snare.
Director Roth previously tweeted the news as well, explaining, "Everyone is working to solve this Asap.

Eli Roth's The Green Inferno (review) is a film we've been waiting to see for quite some time now, and unfortunately it looks like we'll be waiting a bit longer as its anticipated September 5th release date via Open Road Films has now been postponed.
Per Deadline, financier Worldview Entertainment is balking at ex-ceo Christopher Woodrow’s commitment to provide the P&A (promotion and advertising) for the film. Open Road confirmed to the site that the release date is scratched but had no further comment.

The trailers and stills have been trickling online; the festival screenings have been going well, and there's even a smartphone game. But in a surprise move, Eli Roth's cannibal holocaust The Green Inferno has suddenly been pulled from the schedules in the Us, where it was due for a wide release on September 5.A bit of notoriety never hurt any horror film in the long run, but sadly The Green Inferno's woes are nothing to do with its grisly content. The boringly prosaic reasons for the film's - presumably temporary - canning have to do with internal ructions at the financiers Worldview Entertainment. According to Deadline, Worldview's new CEO Molly Conners has baulked at some of the financial commitments made by her outgoing predecessor Christopher Woodrow, among which was a hefty publicity and advertising spend for Roth's jungle opus. Behind-the-scenes talks are ongoing with current distributor Open Road...
