Christmas movies usually bring that holiday cheer that makes us feel warm and comforting starting at the tail end of November all the way up to the 25th of December. Sitting on a couch, drinking some nice hot coco, next to your lit-up Christmas tree is a moment many of us look forward to yearly. Now let’s talk Christmas films that are etched in holiday cinema history. Sure, we have our Home Alone(s), our Grinch Stole Christmas, our Die Hard(s), even that looney, turbo-time, toy chaser, Jingle All the Way with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Sure, they’re all Christmas Staples, but what about mixing it up and popping in a psychological Christmas film of yule-tide terror?...

With the arrival of December comes embracing the Christmas horror subgenre. When it's good, it's good. When it's bad, you still can't turn away. There's just something about the holidays going absolutely wrong that serves as both nightmare fuel and brilliant catharsis depending on the execution. It's why holiday horror film classics like "Black Christmas" and "Gremlins" still reign supreme on many of the Best Christmas horror lists to this day.
In the case of Chris Peckover's "Better Watch Out," the Australian Christmas horror film is more than good, with its horrific subtext concerning toxic masculinity aging better with time. The film follows 17-year-old Ashley (Olivia DeJonge) who has been hired to babysit the 12-year-old boy you'll absolutely despise by the film's end, Luke (Levi Miller). Luke has a crush on Ashley and ropes his best friend into a misguided faux home-invasion plan to attempt to seduce the teen.

Christmas horror movies are some of the most fun you can have during the holidays. There's something thrilling about combining the comfort of a holiday movie with the violent chaos of horror, to make a movie all about feeling unsafe during a time when you're supposed to feel the safest. The juxtaposition of blood and snow, plus all the Christmas lights make for delightfully colorful movies. It also helps that Christmas horror movies work on two separate holidays; You can add them to your October And December watchlists.
One of the best horror Christmas movies of the past few years is Chris Peckover's "Better Watch Out." The Australian horror movie is an R-rated riff on "Home Alone" and "Funny Games." It follows Ashley (Olivia DeJonge), a 17-year-old babysitting precocious 12-year-old Luke (Levi Miller) at Christmas time. After Luke, who has romantic feelings for Ashley, fails to seduce her, the...

When "Stranger Things" launched in 2016, most of its cast were virtual unknowns. Aside from veteran stars like Winona Ryder, the show was the first leading role for many of its cast members, especially the younger kids. Part of what made the show work so well was the fact that all those young kids were supremely-talented. The Netflix hit asks a lot from its stars — lots of action, lots of emotion — and every member of the ever-growing ensemble is up to the task, which makes for a fun watch.
It's also a useful launching pad for further stardom. The series tends to take breaks between seasons — three years passed between Seasons 3 and 4 — leaving the cast free to pursue other acting opportunities. This raises their profiles, providing them a solid base from which to hopefully continue their careers after "Stranger Things" comes to an end with its fifth season. Unsurprisingly, a lot...

Of all the jobs depicted in horror movies that are hazardous to your well-being, babysitting ranks high among the most dangerous. The low hourly rate doesn’t compensate for the utter terror a babysitter will endure from masked intruders or worse.
Halloween Ends opens with a life-altering tragedy of babysitting gone wrong, a shocking twist on the franchise’s babysitting origins. It makes for another fright-filled reminder of the high-risk, low-reward job in the world of horror movies.
This week we’re saluting the babysitter with a look back at ten of the worst babysitting gigs in horror movies. There’s not enough money in the world to make these gigs worth it…

Producers Brett Thornquest, Steven Matusko and Mat Graham have launched Entertainment Advocate, an Australian distribution company with the aim of handling a limited number of Oz, Us and UK titles each year.
The banner’s debut release, Two Heads Creek, a macabre, irreverent horror comedy directed by Jesse O’Brien, opened last weekend after premiering at Monster Fest.
While the weekend gross was a modest $14,000 including festival screenings, Matusko, who is partnered with Thornquest in Eclectik Vision, tells If: “We understand the business and will approach distribution with a producer’s mindset rather than a distributor’s.
“We are not looking to outbid larger distribution companies but we want to work with other Australian producers and also to release select films from the UK and Us.”
Graham was one of the producers on Eclectik Vision’s Infini and The Osiris Child, both directed by Shane Abbess.

Better Watch Out director Chris Peckover has a new horror project lined-up. It’s called Limbo, and it’s about a young mother whose spirit gets kicked out of her own body when something evil possesses her. That’s weird and original enough to sound interesting, and definitely not your average possession plotline. Limbo is being set up at Miramax. […]

Miramax has picked up the horror-thriller Limbo, written by Matthew Jennison and Chris Peckover, with Peckover on board to direct. Deadline reports the following synopsis for the film:
Limbo tells the terrifying story of a young mother whose body becomes possessed by something evil, rendering her a disembodied spirit and a ghost in her own house. As this demonic double takes over her life and threatens to harm her family, she must find a way to protect her loved ones while also finding a way back to her body before it’s too late.
Bill Block, from Miramax, had this to say about the project:

With 2017’s charred remains now in the rear-view, let’s take one final chance to reflect on the year’s best-of-the-best horror films (a single opinion, of course). It’s my favorite year-end tradition when it comes to recaps, because I get to look back on all the best genre content with fondness while hopefully turning readers onto films they might have somehow missed. These are the distinguished titles that left me stunned, psyched-out and wholly fulfilled as a horror lover. Filmmakers, you were too good to me this year – now let me try and return the favor.
Before we jump into the actual ranking, allow me take a minute to point out how many first-time directorial efforts deemed placement on this list. Previously known as Safe Neighbourhood, this Australian Christmas horror falls firmly in the tradition of other festive frighteners such as Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984) or Black Christmas (1974). However, it comes with something of a secret weapon, in the form of a sharply-executed central twist, that allows for a subversive take on the genre and a disturbing look at toxic masculinity.
Set in Smalltown, USA, Better Watch Out stars Levi Miller (Pan) as 12 year-old Luke, whose affluent parents (Virginia Madsen and Patrick Warburton, both under-used) head out to a Christmas party, leaving him in the care of their regular baby-sitter, 17 year-old Ashley (The Visit’s Oliva DeJonge). Chris Peckover delivers an early seasonal treat with this blackly funny slasher about a booze-swigging boy and his babysitter staving off a shadowy assailant
How very unexpected. The Christmas movie of 2017 has turned out to be a cheerfully unpleasant and bracingly nasty horror film: an ingenious and efficient black-comic shocker unfolding in real time over one seasonal evening in a prosperous American home. The twists and lurches are interspersed with bouts of boisterous carol-singing. It looks in many ways like a garden-variety home invasion drama, with hints of Home Alone and Funny Games. But there are suggestions of something older, like a well-made stage play. Dial S for Slasher?
Levi Miller plays Luke, a sensitive, somewhat pampered 12-year-old with a major crush on his babysitter Ashley (Olivia DeJonge), who has come round to look after him while his parents – amusing cameos for Virginia Madsen and Patrick Warburton – are out at some yuletide bash.

Better Watch Out
Stars: Virginia Madsen, Patrick Warburton, Olivia DeJonge, Dacre Montgomery, Levi Miller, Ed Oxenbould, Aleks Mikic | Written by Zack Kahn, Chris Peckover | Directed by Chris Peckover
On a quiet suburban street tucked within a ‘safe neighbourhood’, Ashley has turned up to babysit 12-year-old Luke for the evening while his parents are out for a Christmas party night. Ashley is Luke’s favourite babysitter and he’s looking forward to spending time with her again. Suddenly a brick crashes through the window reading ‘U Leave, U Die’ and they hear someone sneaking around the house upstairs…

This Friday, Chris Peckover’s holiday horror comedy Better Watch Out (read my review here) arrives in select theaters and on VOD platforms everywhere, courtesy of Well Go USA. The film pits three teenagers (Olivia DeJonge, Levi Miller, and Ed Oxenbould) against an unknown assailant who is terrorizing them, but it’s quickly revealed that this isn’t your typical home invasion, and soon enough, a wicked game of cat and mouse breaks out, leaving them all wondering just who will be left standing after this night of babysitting gone awry.
Daily Dead recently spoke with Better Watch Out co-star Oxenbould, who most horror fans should remember from his memorable performance in M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit, and during our interview, he chatted about his involvement with the project, collaborating with Peckover as well as with Miller and DeJonge, and what he loves about the horror genre.

Let's not beat around the bush. Home Alone was pretty obviously the inspiration for Chris Peckover's sophomore feature Better Watch Out (originally titled Safe Neighborhood). There's nothing wrong with that. We all know that both John Hughes and Chris Columbus are filmmakers well worth emulating. But let's just say, there is a lot more than mere emulation going on in Peckover's ode. Instead we get a very dark and twisted thriller-comedy that is also a hell of a lot of fun. While Kevin McCallister was obviously all by himself in that film, Luke (Levi Miller), the protagonist here, has a bit more company. This is in the form of his babysitter Ashley, played by Olivia DeJonge (who you may remember from Shyamalan's The Visit). Despite...

"Don't worry, I'll protect you." Well Go USA has released an official red band trailer for Chris Peckover's Better Watch Out, a holiday horror movie about a scary home invasion one snowy night. Ever since Mike Dougherty's Krampus a few years ago, I've been hoping we might see some other holiday horror movies that aren't too cheesy. This one looks fun and very freaky, with hopefully some good twists involving the two kids fighting back. It seems to start out pretty conventional, but then gets gnarly in the second half of this trailer, definitely earning that "Home Alone meets The Strangers" quote. The cast includes Olivia DeJonge, Levi Miller, Ed Oxenbould, Patrick Warburton, Virginia Madsen, and Dacre Montgomery. Have fun. Following its screening in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival, Revenge has been acquired by the streaming service Shudder for release in North America (as well as several other territories) in early 2018:
Press Release: New York, NY (August 30th, 2017) – AMC Networks’ Shudder announced today that it is acquiring North American, UK, Ireland and Australian rights to Coralie Fargeat’s blood-pumping debut Revenge. The film, which is having its world-premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival next month, will be available on the premium thriller, suspense and horror video streaming service, and play theatrically in early 2018. Revenge will also play at this year’s Fantastic Fest.
Soaking the perennial rape/revenge thriller in a strikingly hypnotic style, writer-director Coralie Fargeat’s compelling feature debut reframes the genre’s typical proclivities with a gaze that scrutinizes male bodies and foregrounds its protagonist’s transformation into a hardened vehicle of vengeance.

From July 13th through August 2nd, the 2017 Fantasia International Film Festival offered attendees over 400 short, experimental, and feature-length film projects, which is just a mind-blowing fact to me. Over the course of several weeks, I had the opportunity to check out two titles that had been garnering some buzz as of late on the festival circuit—Better Watch Out and Fashionista—and they both delivered very unique but equally thrilling viewing experiences for this writer.
Better Watch Out: A delightfully depraved holiday treat, Chris Peckover’s Better Watch Out is one of those rare genre experiences where the less you know going into it, the more satisfying the payoffs are in this biting and darkly comedic spin on the holiday classic Home Alone. If you happen to like -- or Love -- holiday-themed horror films, pre-order the upcoming DVD/Blu-ray release of Better Watch Out. The story (which was formerly titled Safe Neighborhood) revolves around a babysitter about to move away. For one last night, she agrees to watch a boy who has a crush on her to help clear her mind of stress. However, the minutes tick by and she has the most stressful night of her life, as the home is invaded by a killer. Think Home Alone if it were a serial killer movie. I spoke to director Chris Peckover about the film during its well-received screening at Fantasia 2017. ScreenAnarchy: How did Better Watch Out come about? It’s Christmas and songs of carolers are in the air of a quaint suburban neighborhood populated by houses big enough to list four bedrooms yet safe enough to not need alarms. Perfectly imperfect families live inside them like the pulls-no-punches Deandra (Virginia Madsen) and affably self-deprecating Robert (Patrick Warburton) showing how love can take and sometimes excel with a little argumentatively sarcastic friction. They may drink and swear, but they’d do anything for twelve-going-on-thirteen year old son Luke (Levi Miller)—and he knows it. A sensitive kid with lofty aspirations to show his babysitter Ashley (Olivia DeJonge) why he’s a better suitor than her revolving door of inconsiderate brutes, the time to make a move is now since college is a couple months away from separating them forever.
Writer/director Chris Peckover does a wonderful job setting up Better Watch Out‘s wholesome atmosphere like holiday genre-benders of the past.

Chris Peckover’s Better Watch Out (formerly Safe Neighborhood) is more a gift-wrapped home invasion tickler than break-in terrorizer à la The Strangers, but that doesn’t translate to a lack of creeps. The innocence of Home Alone meets jingle bell schlock, and while Zack Kahn’s story isn’t wholly unpredictable, what plays out still subverts typical babysitter-in-peril tropes (enough). My only advice? Don’t watch a single trailer, clip, or interview until you’ve experienced Better Watch Out for yourself. Hell, you should probably stop reading my review. Spoilers won’t follow, but Peckover’s strengths all hinge on surprise. No peeking until Christmas morning!
The setup, without divulging twists, is a simple one. Thirteen-year-old Luke (Levi Miller) is in love with his babysitter Ashley (Olivia DeJonge). He’s determined to win over the high school sweetheart while his parents (played by Virginia Madsen and Patrick Warburton) enjoy a night out.
