Exclusive: Frontières Platform, the genre-focused event run by Fantasia and Cannes’ Marche du Film, returns to the French fest for another edition this year, with 13 projects selected to take part in the showcase, running July 10-11. Scroll down for the full list.
The event is technically taking place physically, as per Cannes’ commitment to staging an in-person industry event in July, but Frontières has informed participants that it does not encourage them to travel during a pandemic and that all pitches will be screened online. If participants do wish to travel to Cannes, however, the event will allow them to do so, and a representative of Frontières will be in attendance, restrictions allowing.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the most overlooked and/or underrated movie of 2017?
E. Oliver Whitney, Screencrush.com, @cinemabite
Despite the critical praise, “A Fantastic Woman” only a one-week qualifying run last month, and I worry is it’ll easily be forgotten this awards season. Daniela Vega gives one of the most astounding performances I’ve seen this year, one that comes from somewhere fierce and internal, portraying the life and struggle of a trans woman that cinema has rarely shown an interest in exploring. But since you can’t see it until it has a proper release in Febraury, do check one of the year’s other...

“I am the architect of my life,” declares Sherry, the central character of Adam Keleman’s debut feature, in her opening voiceover narration. But the structure she’s made of it proves mightily wobbly indeed. An alcoholic making a tenuous living selling cosmetics door-to-door, she sleeps with strangers she picks up in bars, lives in a motel and has left her young daughter in the custody of her sister for the last 10 years. Her desperate existence makes the title of Easy Living sadly ironic.

Adam Keleman’s humor-laced melodrama Easy Living — about a door-to-door makeup salesman (Hannibal‘s Caroline Dhavernas) — opens tomorrow in New York at the Cinema Village before becoming available on digital platforms Tuesday, September 19. Below, he contributes a guest essay on his path towards becoming a feature filmmaker — a journey that took him from Los Angeles to New York. Los Angeles is an isolating place — and I can say that as a native. I was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, that large, sprawling suburb simply known as “The Valley,” memorably featured in such films as […]...

"I am the architect of my life," Sherry, the door-to-door makeup saleswoman played by Caroline Dhavernas, announces in the trailer for Easy Living. "I build its foundation with the qualities of stability and resilience."
There's not much in the way of either in the preview, debuting here on Et, as Sherry eats burgers in her car, endures uncomfortable hookups, indulges in a few too many cocktails and plays with a handgun. Hannibal and Mary Kills People star Dhavernas also fronts this exclusive look at the movie's poster, with the tagline, "Success is an illusion."

Exclusive: The film premiered at Berlin earlier this year and also won two awards at Ankara.
German sales outfit M-Appeal has closed a North American deal for its topical Turkish psychological thriller Inflame (Kaygı) with FilmRise.
Inflame is the feature debut of Turkish female filmmaker Ceylan Özgün Özçelik. The film, described in Screen International’s review as “casting its lot defiantly with the liberal, free-speech minority in Erdogan’s Turkey,” was a premiere in Berlin earlier this year.
The film recently received two awards at the Ankara Film Festival - a special jury prize and best art director award. This follows on from its Turkish premiere in competition at the Istanbul International Film Festival.
The film’s main character is a news channel employee who has been having the same nightmare for quite some time. Through recurring nightmares, a question creeps into her mind: Is it possible that her parents were not killed in a traffic accident...

“Whether we consent to it or not, our identities and our bodies are politicized,” Emmy-nominated filmmaker, actress and activist Jen Richards tells Et not long after the independent drama Easy Living premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas. Richards, who has appeared on Nashville and Caitlyn Jenner’s docuseries I Am Cait, has a smaller role -- the “steady best friend,” if you will -- in the film. But it’s significant for her to play this particular part because it’s one of the first times a transgender actor is playing a character that has nothing to do with being transgender.
While Emmy-nominated director Silas Howard offered one of the first instances of this in 2001’s By Hook or by Crook, the film is still a far cry from Hollywood’s usual portrayals of transgender roles, which have historically been the butt of a joke, a prostitute...

The TromaDance film festival makes it into puberty with their 13th annual edition and you won’t want to miss where they’ve grown some hair on May 4-5 at Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park, New Jersey. It’s two days of hormone-fueled short films, voice-changing features and a star-studded panel discussion.
Two features will be screening at the fest: Steven Kostanski‘s VHS throwback action sci-fi horror flick Manborg and the Trost brothers’ dance-fight video game frenzy The Fp.
The rest of TromaDance is stuffed to the gills with disturbing, grotesque and just downright freaky short films, including Greg Hanson‘s garbage disposal love story Sinkhole and Aaron Zegher‘s ghostly I See a Light. Short film blocks are broken down by theme, such as “Monsters,” “Zombies,” “Madness” and an absolutely not-for-kids “Saturday Morning Cartoons” collection.
Plus, on Saturday evening, there will be a panel discussion on the marketing...

This animated adaptation of a popular kids book is voiced by Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, and ... Mr. T! We pity the fool critic who doesn't like this movie.
"...an exuberant comedy with sleek animation and a kicky script."
— Natasha Vargas-Cooper, E! Online
"With its giant hamburgers and ice cream snowflakes falling from the sky, Ron and Jodi Barrett's classic children's book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs imaginatively expanded its prepubescent audience's sense of wonder and possibility. Now a 3-D animated film, adapted to the screen by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Cloudy looks to work similar magic on a new generation."
— Adam Keleman, Slant Magazine
"...goes down easy enough at first. But even at a svelte 81 minutes, this meal drags on too long..."
— Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly
"I've seen a lot of 3-D recently, and in terms of technical quality, this is the best."
