Netflix used the second night of its See What’s Next: Asia content gathering in Singapore to unveil eight new original films for its India market, including a regional release for Bleecker Street and ShivHans Pictures’ long-gestating Hotel Mumbai, which the streaming giant has rights to in the South and Southeast Asian territories.
The film, directed by Anthony Maras and starring Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Nazanin Boniadi, Anupam Kher and Jason Isaacs, had been in limbo as part of The Weinstein Company bankruptcy. Other films in the works include Firebrand, a Marathi Film directed by Aurna Raje and produced by Priyanka Chopra that follows a successful lawyer (Usha Jadhav), a sexual assault victim, as she tackles difficult family cases while also dealing with intimacy issues in her own marriage.

MollywoodA day before the release, the director wrote a little note on her blog, about a regional film written by Sachin Kundalkar.Digital NativeA day before her movie was to release, director Anjali Menon revealed that Koode is an adaptation of a regional film. “I found myself re-imagining the story in a different way and when I discussed it with its makers they graciously offered the adaptation rights to me. But he had some advice – to keep one peculiar element under the wraps as they had done,” wrote Anjajli on her blog. She has been keeping the origin of the story under wraps until then but as is her usual practice, Anjali wrote a little note on the eve of her release. “Koode is an adaptation of the original story by Sachin Kundalkar. I am honoured that he trusted me with the story and it has been a rich learning experience for me. For those who have seen the original please be prepared to see a different interpretation. I humbly request our audience and media to not share that element in their reviews so that everyone may experience the movie first hand.” Anjali has carefully avoided naming the other film, for if one knew that one ‘peculiar element’ before watching it, half the fun would be lost. That element is a beautiful surprise that is revealed witin the first few minutes of the movie, but it’s well worth not knowing it before. Prithviraj and Nazriya play siblings in Koode. And Parvathy plays Prithvi’s love interest. The film also has Maala Parvathi, Ranjith, Roshan Mathew, Siddharth Menon, Nandhu Pothuval and Atul Kulkarni in the cast. Written and directed by Anjali Menon, Koode is bankrolled by Renjith under the banner Rejaputhra Visual Media and Anjali's Little Films India. The music has been composed by Raghu Dixit and M Jayachandran. Other technical crew of the film includes Littil Swayamp for cinematography, Praveen Prabhakar for editing, Arvind Ashok Kumar for production designing, Pampa Biswas for costume designing and Mitta Antony for makeup. Hilary Mantel, Jonathan Franzen, Mohsin Hamid, Ruth Rendell, Tom Stoppard, Malcolm Gladwell, Eleanor Catton and many more recommend the books that impressed them this year
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Five Star Billionaire by Tash Aw (Fourth Estate) is a brilliant, sprawling, layered and unsentimental portrayal of contemporary China. It made me think and laugh. I also love Dave Eggers' The Circle (Hamish Hamilton), which is a sharp-eyed and funny satire about the obsession with "sharing" our lives through technology. It's convincing and a little creepy.
William Boyd
By strange coincidence two of the most intriguing art books I read this year had the word "Breakfast" in their titles. They were Breakfast with Lucian by Geordie Greig (Jonathan Cape) and Breakfast at Sotheby's by Philip Hook (Particular). Greig's fascinating, intimate biography of Lucian Freud was a revelation. That 2012 began with an overwrought hyper-melodramatic brutal and tumultuous remake of Agneepath and ended with Yash Chopra’s muted mellow all-heart-no-malice ode to romance Jab Tak Hai Jaan seems indicative of the direction that Bollywood seems headed for. The journey, as we can see, is unpredictable and largely exciting. Looking back, some films of 2012 that fetched hype-star ratings seem bloated and over-eager to please either critics or the masses, but never both. Luckily the films that were truly meritorious did get a place under the swoon.

2012 turned out to be a year when a number of smaller or independent films made their way onto many Top Ten lists. But, as always, there are films that, for a number of reasons, risk being forgotten or overlooked, especially in a year where there are so many great films to choose from. Here are 13 films – 10 already released, 3 from the festival circuit – that you should have seen in 2012. It’s still not too late!

Somewhere towards the ‘grind’ finale, when you are grinding your teeth in exasperation at the banality of the burlesque, a hideous character named Gagabai is seen slithering dancing and cavorting all over a set that looks like a psychedelic nightmare-scape from Anurag Kashyap’s Dev D. This Lady Gaga in Aiyyaa sings, ‘Do do do me’ to a leery lad who has seen better ‘daze’. Demurring to Gaga’s do-able proposition lanky lad replies, ‘I do with my hand.’
Ahem. At this point the director seems to have completely lost the post. Aiyyaa is a film that thrives on the mood of unmitigated zaniness. For those who like their comedy with a heavy layering of wistful fantasy it’s quite an experience.Wacky and funny on the top, the world of the protagonist Meenaxi(Rani Mukherjee) is dark and sombre beneath.

If last week belonged to Shashi Godbole, this week another Maharastrian mulgi, Meenakshi Deshpande, tries to make us look into her life, her dreams, herself. Director Sachin Kundalkar, who has dabbled in Marathi cinema earlier brings to us a crazy, wacky and really wakda story through Aiyyaa.
Based on the segment Lagnaachya Vayachi Mulgi (A Bride To Be) of his 2009 Marathi movie Gandha (Smell), Aiyyaa is the story of a filmy, feisty Maharashtrian girl Meenakshi (Rani Mukherjee) who realizes that her dreams are about to remain unfulfilled as her parents have begun the customary groom hunting. Between her groom seeing ceremonies and the crazy antics of her family – loud mother, telephone repairing dad, dog loving brother and gold teethed grandmom – she starts falling for an art student Surya (Prithviraj) because of his smell which she finds attractive! Rani Mukherjee has left no stone unturned in her film Aiyyaa and wants everything to be totally perfect. She has put her best foot forward to do three different dance forms, out of which she has done belly dancing for her song ‘Aga Bai’ which is choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant, who has also choreographed her Lavani number in the film.
Vaibhavi said that the concept of the songs revolve around the dreams of a middle class Maharashtrian girl, and that is why she wanted these songs to be really entertaining and the kinds that would set anyone’s foot tapping. She also credits Rani for bringing in the tamasha feel for the Lavani song.
Rani trained herself for her dance 4 months in advance and modified her body as needed by her songs. But Vaibhavi says that for belly dancing, Rani needed more of a rounded belly than a flat one.

After the outspoken journalist Meera Geti of No One Killed Jessica, Rani Mukherjee is all set to come back in action with Aiyyaa, which is also giving her the chance of fulfilling a dream. She will be paying tribute to three legendary ladies from the 90s: Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla by donning one look of each of the actress’ from one of their many popular films. Rani is displaying Sridevi’s famous ‘Na Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai’ (Chaalbaaz, 1989), Madhuri’s popular Dhak Dhak look(Beta, 1992) and Juhi’s avatar from ‘Ghazab Ka Hai Din’ (Qayamat se Qayamat Tak, 1989).
These 3 actresses are the ones Rani really looks up to, and has keenly watched all their movies and idolizes them. She has also tried enacting their styles.
In Aiyyaa, Rani plays a girl whose parents are desperately trying to get her married. She says that this is something each and every girl faces,...

I can't honestly say that the upcoming film from first time Hindi director Sachin Kundalkar, Aiyyaa, is particularly Twitch-y looking material, but I'll be damned if it doesn't look like a shitload of fun!Aiyyaa is the story of Meenakshi Deshpande (Rani Mukherjee), a southern masala enthusiast who tries to live her life like the characters in the films she loves so much. She laughs big, she cries big, she does everything big, and when it's time to get her married off, she won't settle for anything other that her ideal filmi hero. In this case that hero is Surya, played by hunky Malayalam film icon Prithviraj. Meenakshi is lured in by his entoxicating musk and follows her nose around hoping desperately to nab Surya for...

Rani isn’t happy with one. Her movie Aiyya will see her doing three item songs. The songs will revolve around the fantasy world that her character lives in. Being a diehard Bollywood fan she imagines herself to be a top actress going around the trees with his princess. Director Sachin Kundalkar also confirmed the news. He said, “In this film, the girl has this habit of dreaming. One of her item numbers is a lavani song, again in her dream.” The songs in the movie have been composed by Amit Trivedi. Three of them are item numbers. Of the three songs one is a lavani song. Earlier we have seen Vidya Balan groove to it in her movie ‘Th...

The trailer of ‘Aiyaa’ looks refreshing. No wonder Rani Mukerji looks stunning but it is southern superstar Prithviraj who grabs the attention. Wearing goggles in the song sequences, Prithviraj Sukumaran looks like the typical south Indian hero.Reportedly it is being said that Rani went out for collecting information, whether Prithviraj is a bankable actor or not. She searched the net for that purpose. Only after looking at an interview of his, she was convinced that he was the perfect person for the role. The movie is said to be inspired by director Sachin Kundalkar’s short film ‘Gandha’ (fragrance). However it was filmmake...

Sachin Kundalkar forays into Hindi cinema with Aiyyaa, a full length feature film version of his short film of the same title. It turns out Anurag Kashyap, the producer, was so impressed by Sachin’s short film that he thought a feature film should be made of it.
The film has a very native Marathi flavour to it that Kundalkar really wanted to bring into Hindi cinema. From the clothes to the dialect, everything has been given a great deal of attention. Rani Mukherji returns to screen after No One Killed Jessica in a role that many are touting to be her comeback role. Malayalam superstar Prithviraj takes a bold step with a heroine orientated film as his debut film in Hindi cinema. Amit Trivedi (Ishaqzaade & Aisha) scores the music for the film and Amitabh Bhattacharya has penned the lyrics. Originally slated for a late October release, the film has...

Rani Mukerji is coming back on the screen to tickle our funny bones. The first look of the actresses’ much awaited film ‘Aiyya’ has been released. The promo shows her draped in blue chiffon saree. She is looking gorgeous and sexy. To add twist to it, she also wears oversized goggles. She is seen wearing trinkets, like nose ring and ghungroo in the promo, making it a complete comic look. In fact the first poster of the movie itself seemed very hilarious, which shows her as a Marathi mulgi. The movie has been directed by Sachin Kundalkar. It also marks the debut of south superstar, Prithviraj. Prithviraj is one of the most popular acto...

The stars of Bollywood enjoy success and praise from audiences but it is not too often we hear about those behind the stars success. Rumor has it that there is simply one man behind Rani Mukherjee’s success, so much so that she is extremely superstitious about her Man Friday Amosh.
Amosh appeared in a cameo role in No One Killed Jessica, Rani’s last film, but their working relationship is understood to go back further than that as Amosh has been working for the star for many years now. No One Killed Jessica was Rani’s only film of last year but a big hit nonetheless giving evidence to Amosh’s infectious luck.
