One of the best pictures of 2015 is an accurate and relevant movie about a truly difficult subject. Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber, Brian d'Arcy James, John Slattery and Stanley Tucci lead an impressive ensemble; I don't think I've ever seen such a complicated story told with such clarity, and so entertainingly. In naming Spotlight one of the best ensembles of 2016, we said, “Tom McCarthy’s procedural moves with the precision of a fine timepiece. Rarely does one find a film where all is tune, from the pacing, writing, direction and acting. Highlighting the heroic work of the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team, the group is headed by Robby Robinson (Michael Keaton) who risks life long friendships to get the story right. His team includes Mike Rezendes (played by a compulsive Mark Ruffalo), Sacha Pfeiffer (Rachel McAdams) and Matt Caroll (Brian d’Arcy James). Encouraged by a Boston outsider, editor Marty Baron (Live Schreiber), the team undertakes a long-term investigation of abuses in the Catholic Church. Movies about journalistic crusades often run the risk of appearing pretentious, preachy, or some uncomfortable combination of both. That the best examples, namely All The President’s Men (1976) and more recently, Zodiac (2007), can flip guys with rolled up sleeves and notepads into the pantheon of American heroism speaks to the allure of true justice. Such was the case in 2001, when a Boston Globe news team uncovered the greatest religious scandal the country had ever seen – five priests convicted of sexual abuse, with hundreds of accusations soon following. It was a watershed moment in journalism, but post 9/11, it also drove a dagger through society’s most sacred institution in a time of need.
