Discovery Channel fans are growing frustrated at Deadliest Catch, and many are voicing their opinions. There are some fans who even think the show should end. Why are they so irritated with the show that brings mariners out crab fishing in dangerous waters? Read on to find out their main complaints.
Deadliest Catch Critics Miss The Early Seasons
Many fans of Deadliest Catch mock the production team for what they think are silly scenes. For example, hardly anyone on social media believes those tough fishermen would sit and cry during interviews. Others feel that it’s become so fake and scripted that it hardly deserves the word “reality” to be associated with it.
Deadliest Catch, Sig Hansen, Mandy Hansen
Other Deadliest Catch fans hate that the show brought women onto the vessels. They claim it’s not sexist to criticize the girls who are not as physically strong as the men.

The show is expected to go on for Discovery’s Deadliest Catch, despite the decision by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game last week to cancel the winter snow and red king crab seasons due to dwindling populations.
In a statement provided to Deadline, Deadliest Catch Executive Producer Arom Starr-Paul said this about the 19th season that will kick off in the spring of 2023: “Fans can anticipate another great season of Deadliest Catch where we will document our captains as they participate in other sustainable Bering Sea crab and pot fisheries, such as Golden King Crab, Bairdi and Cod.”
Deadliest Catch is currently in its 18th season on Discovery. It premiered on April 19.
In a statement last week, Alaska Fish and Game and National Marine Fisheries Service said the cancellation was due to the snow crab stock being “below the Adf&g regulatory threshold for opening a fishery.

“I forgot what a pain in the ass it is to start over!” confesses veteran captain Sig Hansen with his signature gruff good humor. In the September 13 premiere of Deadliest Catch: The Viking Returns, he and his clan relocate from Alaska to their ancestral land, Norway, after the Bering Sea’s red king crab fishery shut down. In the September 27 episode, Sig and his co-captain/business partner, daughter Mandy, are on the verge of bringing a crab species previously considered a throwaway to the European market. Fast work! The Hansens have a long history of determinedly working together for success. “For generations, fishing has always been about ‘the family,’” says Sig. “[Here] I’m reminded of my history, my past, and our culture, everywhere. I’m proud of where I come from. It’s helped mold me into who I am.” To create an equally proud future, Sig has welcomed his...

It’s a race against the clock for Captain Sig Hansen in the upcoming episode of Deadliest Catch as he attempts to find crab in Norway. In an exclusive clip from the May 24th installment, the veteran crabber is taking a gamble in hopes of finishing his tasks as soon as possible to return home for the birth of his granddaughter. Dropping anchor in the northernmost reaches of Norway, Sig and his team are searching for Red King Crab. (Credit: Discovery) The crabs offer the captain a temptingly lucrative business, but it’s a risky one too because catching the invasive species is an unpredictable endeavor. In the clip, above, Sig oversees his crew from the bridge as they pull up traps from the deep. “We’re on the Russian border,” Sig explains to the cameras, “I gotta assume they’re just coming right across the border, that’s my gut feeling right now.

If the Discovery Channel was angling for a hit show, then they hauled it in with the “Deadliest Catch,” which premiered in 2005 and has aired every year since.
The documentary series, narrated by Mike Rowe, follows crab fishermen and crab boats as they ply their dangerous and sometimes deadly trade in the Bering Sea during the Alaskan king crab and snow crab fishing seasons. The base for the crab fleet is the Aleutian Islands port of Dutch Harbor, Alaska.
Through the years of the TV show’s airing, it has proven popular around the globe, making the skippers, their crewman, and their boats, celebrities in their own right.
This year’s season, which kicks off with a two-hour premiere on April 19, finds the crews of nine crab vessels trying to cope with the Alaskan government shutting down red king crab catching for the season. You’ll also find them contending with the usual treacherous seas,...

The title “Deadliest Catch” wasn’t just pulled out of a hat for Discovery’s hit deep-sea crabbing series.
On Tuesday’s season finale episode, Cody Rhodes (not to be confused with Aew’s Cody Rhodes) must be helicopter-lifted off of the F/V (Fishing Vessel) Karie Marie’s deck — but first, a Coast Guard rescue swimmer must get to him first.
Two hours earlier, Rhodes “took the falling force of a 1,000-pound steel crab pod to his left leg, twisting the flesh and bone, resulting in a gruesome spiral fracture of his fibula and tibia,” series narrator Mike Rowe tells us.
