Paul O’Grady has been remembered as a “force for good” by his famous friends including Carol Vorderman, Julian Clary and Michael Cashman.
Celebrities paid tribute to the drag queen turned TV and radio star during For The Love of Paul O’Grady on ITV on Sunday (9 April) evening, following his death last month at the age of 67.
O’Grady, who started out as a social worker while performing on the London nightclub circuit as the acerbic, platinum wig-wearing Lily Savage, died “unexpectedly but peacefully” on 28 March, his partner Andre Portasio said in a statement.
Remembering O’Grady for his activism, Vorderman, 62, said: “He was not only brilliant as an entertainer, he was a force for good.”
Former Labour Party leader Ed Miliband added: “He wasn’t just a fighter for the underdog, somebody who was willing to use his platform to speak up for people who didn’t have a platform,...

Ed Sheeran has pledged his support for the Music Venue Trust’s (Mvt) Own Our Venues initiative.
Own Our Venues is a long term campaign which launched in June. It aims to intervene to help take ownership on some of the UK’s Grassroot venues.
The plan hopes to take control of the freeholds of these venues across the country and put them under a protected status of benevolent ownership.
“Own Our Venues is an initiative I’m really passionate about getting behind,” Sheeran said of the scheme, which hopes to raise an initial £3.5m by the end of 2022.
“Small, independent venues are so, so important to the music community, and I’ve played some of my favourite gigs of my career in these rooms.
“We’ve got to do all we can to protect these beautiful venues that we’ve all come to love for years to come.”

Over £100k has been raised at The Jamal Edwards Self Belief Trust event, which honoured the late entrepreneur’s life and legacy.
Last night’s (20 September) event was held at Here at Outernet London, with performances from stars including Ed Sheeran, Fireboy Dml and Jessie Ware – as well as a surprise appearance from Lewis Capaldi.
“I loved Jamal and he always had something generous to offer. He got me tickets to see Man United even though he supports Chelsea, which just shows the kind of person he was,” Jessie Ware said, dedicating a cover of her song “What You Won’t Do For Love to Edwards.
The event raised over £100,000 for Trust, which supports causes that give young people the opportunity to thrive in media and entertainment. The funds were raised in a live auction, which included a host of money-can’t-buy experiences, fetching a total of £105,000.

Charles III has officially been proclaimed the King of the United Kingdom and fourteen Commonwealth realms during a meeting of the Accession Council in London on Saturday morning. It is the first time in history the ceremony has ever been televised.
U.K. networks including BBC, ITV and Sky broadcast the ceremony live at 10Am local time as did U.S. networks including NBC, where Savannah Guthrie was anchoring for an early morning special of the “Today Show.”
Broadcasting the Accession Council ceremony is significant and, according to historian Vernon Bogdnaor “a sign of the times that the monarchy has to adapt to a more open and less deferential society,” as he told BBC News.
When Queen Elizabeth acceded to the throne in 1952 there was not even a discussion that the ceremony should be televised while a debate then ensued over broadcasting her coronation the following year. In the event,...

Director rails against ‘caring capitalism’ after his new film Sorry We Missed You premieres to acclaim at Cannes
Ken Loach has criticised “fake left politicians” such as Ed Miliband and Tony Blair, whose brand of “caring capitalism” he says has resulted in rising job insecurity.
Speaking at the Cannes film festival, where his new film, Sorry We Missed You, premiered on Thursday, the veteran film-maker said support for the free market from centre-left figures had resulted in the rise of the gig economy and a working class that is “weak and can be turned on and off like a tap”.

Following last week's highly-anticipated wedding, the surprise arrival of Allen Leech as Tom Branson and the return of Rose Leslie, this week's episode was overrun with familiar faces - and fans of the show had a lot to say.
Between Branson's changing politics and the welcome return of Matthew Goode as one Henry Talbot from last year's Christmas special, Digital Spy turned to Twitter to find out what everyone thought:
For some, Tom Branson's return was welcomed whole-heartedly:
It's great to have you back @Allenleech ... Now where's that gold envelope #DowntonAbbey

Saturday's episode of The X Factor was full of high-emotions, doppelgangers and a dose of nastiness too.
Though it was rather Techno Susan-less, there were still other highlights to enjoy. Here is a round-up of the evening's best reactions from the Twittersphere:

Everyone stop everything! Simon Cowell has debuted a beard, and so unexpected was it that we almost didn't recognise him as he arrived at The X Factor's launch in London this afternoon.
Following in the recent fashionable footsteps of Ed Miliband, the X Factor judge and music mogul sported silver stubble and his trademark Aviator sunglasses, white T-shirt and jeans as he posed for photographers on the red carpet.
Nick Grimshaw interview: 'I will definitely cry on The X Factor'
And we've got to say, we think it suits him.
Cheryl Fernandez-Versini won't be performing on The X Factor and here's why
Cowell was joined by fellow judges Cheryl Fernandez-Versini - looking cool in a low-cut, floral-print zip dress - and Nick Grimshaw - dapper in a navy top, leather bomber jacket and skinny jeans.
Rita Ora was absent from the ITV show's premiere due to pre-planned promotional duties in the Us.

Myleene Klass has reflected on her clash with Ed Miliband clash over mansion tax, declaring that "people expect her to be flicky hair girl, and I wasn't".
The 37-year-old star, who hosts upcoming ITV cooking competition BBQ Champ with Adam Richman, had vehemently disagreed with the Labour Party's proposed taxation on homes worth over £2 million while appearing on The Agenda alongside Miliband.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Klass defended her debate with the former Labour leader as she explained: "Ultimately I asked a question, and I think you're allowed to ask a question.
"My dad was in the navy - so the armed forces - and my mum was a nurse in the NHS."

It's been a long Election Night.
From a BBC political editor soldiering on in spite of illness to a political stalwart whose hat became the butt of many a joke, it was quite a surreal evening on all accounts. As always, we at Digital Spy are here to curate everything through the weirdness that was Election Night.
1. Liberal Democrat stalwart Paddy Ashdown and his hat
Forget about Nick Clegg, clearly the Liberal Democrats' loser of the night was party chair Paddy Ashdown. Paddy offered the following gem when presented with disappointing exit poll figures: "If that exit poll is right, I'll eat my hat." Oh Paddy, don't tempt Twitter....

If you had to think of one TV star to sit down with the country's politicians ahead of this week's General Election, then it probably wouldn't be Joey Essex.
The former Towie star has previously admitted to having a seriously limited knowledge of what goes on in Westminster, and he's never before voted at an election. So what did he learn when he sat down with Ed Miliband, Nick Clegg and Nigel Farage recently?
We met up with Joey last week to talk about his first impressions of the candidates, what he thinks politicians can do to improve their reputation, and whether he sees any future for himself in politics...

Noel Gallagher has dismissed Labour leader Ed Miliband as a "f**king communist".
The former Oasis guitarist said that he would not be voting in next week's General Election, and also criticised prime minister David Cameron for his stance on the original leaders' debate proposals.
"I'm not sure I can get behind any of them at the minute," Gallagher says on Channel 4's Alan Carr Chatty Man tonight (May 1).
"I dunno. The fact that Cameron didn't turn up for the debate is a disgrace. I think that Miliband, if he gets in, is just going to fail us."
Carr replies: "Give him a bloody chance. Look at his little face, how can you say that?"
Gallagher retorts: "Because he is a f**king communist."
He then insults Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon and says: "The other unpleasant little woman from over the border. Cheap shoes... and then there's the Greens - whatever.

The Bourne director offers up a rather flat and unshaky look at the Labour leader’s life in his four-minute campaign film
Ed Miliband is not exactly Bourne, the dynamic, tightly coiled action hero of the movies that made Paul Greengrass’s name. He is rather closer to Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips, that other Paul Greengrass hit: the decent, shy, slightly wimpish fellow, feeling terribly alone as he commands a container ship and realises he is about to be attacked by murderous pirates. Intentionally or not, the emphasis in Paul Greengrass’s new four-minute campaign film is on Ed Miliband’s loneliness, the solitude of power and responsibility: Ed at the helm of the Labour container ship, and suddenly seeing a speedboat roaring up alongside, with David Cameron, George Osborne, Paul Dacre, Rupert Murdoch and the Barclay Brothers, all waving Ak-47s.

How can ITV2 find a way to get its audience interested in the general election? Get Joey Essex involved, of course.
The latest Educating Joey Essex sees the former Towie star learning as much as he can about politics, and meeting some of the biggest party leaders. God help us.
The trailer sees Essex failing to pronounce 'Conservatives', finding out about the Liberal Democrats, and hanging out with Nigel Farage on a boat.
He has also met Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Labour leader Ed Miliband on his journey, which will be documented on Tuesday, May 5.
Sadly, David Cameron turned down the opportunity to speak to Essex for the show. Will he regret that decision come May 7?
To give the show its full title, Educating Joey Essex: General Election What Are You Sayin?! will hopefully end with Essex deciding which party to vote for - and all bets...

If you ever get the chance to interview Robert Downey Jr, you might want to avoid asking him about jail or drugs.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron star walked out of his Channel 4 News interview with anchor Krishnan Guru-Murthy after taking issue with his choice of questions.
Downey Jr became noticeably more uncomfortable when Guru-Murthy referred to a 2008 interview in which the star opened up about how his time in prison affected him, at one point asking: "Are we promoting a movie?"
As Guru-Murthy brought the interview back towards the star's personal life - referencing past interviews where he spoke about his relationship with his father, drinking and drugs - Downey Jr said: "I'm sorry, I really don't... what are we doing?"
The actor then made a hasty exit as Guru-Murthy tried to apologise, quipping "it's just getting a little Diane Sawyer in here" as he left the room.

Nigel Farage has called for the BBC licence fee to be reduced.
The Ukip party leader publicly stated in Rochester that the fee - currently at £145.50 - should be cut by two-thirds.
"Do I think the BBC needs to involve itself and engage itself in many other fields of entertainment and sport, given the whole world has changed with cable television and satellite television? No," Farage said.
"I would like to see the BBC cut back to the bone to be purely a public service broadcaster with an international reach, and I would have thought you could do that with a licence fee that was about a third of what it currently is."
The licence fee is frozen until 2017 at present, with the Conservatives indicating that they would retain the freeze.
Labour's Ed Miliband said earlier this month that the BBC's licence fee settlement should be renewed.

David Cameron's absence was one of the biggest questions asked online during tonight's challengers' debate.
The second-most searched question on Google during the event broadcast live on BBC One was: 'Where is David Cameron?'
The leaders of all five opposition parties - Labour's Ed Miliband, the Snp's Nicola Sturgeon, Ukip's Nigel Farage, the Green Party's Natalie Bennett and Plaid Cymru's Leanne Wood - all appeared on the debate.
The only question which more people searched for was: 'What is austerity?'
Prime Minister David Cameron refused to take part in more than one televised debate during campaigning and demanded all seven leaders were represented, leading to a debate shown by ITV before Easter.
Tonight's Top 5 most-Googled questions provided to The Guardian by Google Trends are:
What is austerity?
Why is David Cameron not at the debate?
Who should I vote for?
Where is Natalie Bennett from?
What is a brownfield site?...

Jon: "It's got a 21st century feel to it. It's a different rack of characters which generates a different style of joke. It's faster, somehow. George Osborne has insisted that a Conservative government "[doesn't] plan to replace" the licence fee.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer told Radio Times that while there are no plans to abolish the fee, it is necessary to "look at all the options" of how the BBC might be funded.
Osborne also voiced his opinion that having the BBC Trust regulate the broadcaster "has never really worked".
"I've never understood why the BBC is so frightened of regulation by Ofcom... it's not as if ITV is poorly regulated," he said. "Ofcom has proved itself to be a robust regulator."
Rona Fairhead, head of the BBC Trust, previously called for it to be shut down, arguing that that the Trust should be replaced by an external regulator.
Meanwhile, Labour party leader Ed Miliband has indicated that he would push for the renewal of the licence fee in 2016 if he wins the general election next month.

The ITV Leaders' Debate caused a storm on Twitter yesterday evening (April 2), generating 1.5 million posts during its two-hour runtime.
There was an average of 8,657 tweets per minute during the programme and Ukip leader Nigel Farage dominated the chatter.
Farage's controversial claim that 60% of HIV sufferers in the UK are "not British Nationals" caused the biggest spike in conversation.
The politicians' closing speeches and a heckler being ejected from the audience also caused a flurry of activity on the social network.
Farage edged out prime minister David Cameron and Labour leader Ed Miliband as the most-talked about politician on Twitter during the broadcast.
However, poll results paint him as a Marmite figure, attracting as many negative comments as positive.
Labour emerged as the most-tweeted-about party, ahead of Snp and Ukip, with neither of the coalition parties making it into the top three.

Parliament has been dissolved, there are no longer technically any MPs and the six-week General Election campaigns have started – all in anticipation of the British public going to the ballot box on May 7 to vote for who they wish to be the leader of the next government.
The man who is looking to wrestle control of the Houses of Commons back into Labour hands and take-up his first term as Prime Minister in the process is 45-year-old Edward Samuel “Ed” Miliband – who has served as Leader of the Opposition throughout almost the entirety of David Cameron’s stay at Number 10 Downing Street to date.
Miliband was a somewhat surprise choice to be Labour leader back in September 2010, but since his election he has attempted to push the party back towards the left and to establish himself as a credible alternative to Prime Minister Cameron.

It's exactly five weeks until the General Election and with the first week of campaigning nearly finished, all seven main party leaders turned up to ITV Studios tonight (April 2) to debate four main issues and tell voters their policies.
David Cameron for the Conservatives, Ed Miliband the Labour Party, the Lib Dem's Nick Clegg, Nigel Farage of Ukip, leader of the Green Party Natalie Bennet, Nicola Sturgeon for the Snp and Leanne Wood of Plaid Cymru all took to their podiums and discussed the economy, immigration, the NHS and education.
And here's what Twitter thought of the two-hour programme:
The set's blue hue and sheer number of podiums required for all seven leaders brought one TV show in particular to mind:
Its time to play, The Weakest Link. #leadersdebate

They have drawn lots to decide the order in which they deliver their opening and closing statements, in addition to when they answer each of four questions on different topics.

All four leaders will discuss the economy, the NHS, immigration and the future of the UK.
ITV News anchor Julie Etchingham will host the debate ahead of the general election on May 7.

Last night (March 26), Channel 4 and Sky News hosted the first pre-election televised leaders programme Cameron and Miliband Live: The Battle for Number 10.
The Prime Minister and the leader of the Labour Party answered questions from a studio audience and Jeremy Paxman. Digital Spy rounds-up the best bits below:
Paxman challenged the Prime Minister by asking him if he stuck up for the rich and famous. The host questioned his appointment of newspaper editor and convicted phone hacker Andy Coulsen and also enquired about his defence of Jeremy Clarkson.
It was then Ed Miliband's turn to be posed an uncomfortable question when a member of the audience asked him if his brother David would have done a better job as leader of the opposition.
Miliband then explained the concepts behind the proposed Mansion Tax, saying that it would aid the redistribution of wealth across the United Kingdom.

With six weeks to go until the General Election, the campaigns have well and truly begun as David Cameron and Ed Miliband took part in Sky News and Channel 4's Battle for Number 10 tonight (March 26).
The Prime Minister and the leader of the Labour Party answered questions from a studio audience and Jeremy Paxman - in his first post-bbc broadcast. Kay Burley was also on hand to help lead proceedings.
The overall feeling of the first election programme was that it was well put together, but some disliked Paxman's interviewing style - or frankly were scared by him:
Well done Channel 4 and Sky News. Feels at last as though the election campaign has begun #BattleForNumber10

#BattleForNumber10 Paxman debased the debate with his over-personal schoolyard bullying & his final 'overheard' "Are you ok, Ed?" Wanker.

The British General Election campaign gets into full swing this evening with the first televised live debate between Prime Minister David Cameron and Labour Party leader Ed Miliband. The event, which will be aired on Channel 4 and Sky News, comes after months of tortuous negotiations about what format the debates, if any, should take. The impact the debates will have on this year’s elections, however, looks set to be reduced from their oversized influence in 2010. Back…...

The majority of Digital Spy readers have revealed that they want David Cameron and Ed Miliband to have a televised, one-to-one debate before the election.
Out of over 1,000 respondents, an overwhelming 80% of readers answered yes to the question posed in our poll.
Yesterday (March 21), it was confirmed that there would be no televised debate between the two party leaders as the programming schedule surrounding this year's election was announced.
Instead, Cameron and Miliband will start off proceedings with a live question and answer session on March 26 where they will separately answer audience questions rather than engage in a head-to-head debate.
A full debate won't take place until April 2, and will involve all seven major party leaders, including Cameron, Miliband, Nick Clegg and Nigel Farage.
Cameron, Miliband and Clegg will also participate in a BBC Question Time special on April 30, where they will again each answer questions from the audience.
