Former WGA East president Michael Winship, running unopposed, will be the guild’s next president, succeeding Beau Willimon, who’s not seeking re-election after four years in office. House of Cards creator Willimon led the guild through the WGA’s historic legal battle that reshaped the talent agency business.
Winship, an award-winning news and documentary writer, led the guild during the tumultuous 2007-08 writers strike, serving as president for five consecutive two-year terms – starting just before the strike and ending in 2017. He returned to guild politics in 2018, winning a seat on its Council. He won an Emmy and three WGA Awards writing for three different Bill Moyers shows, as well as the WGA East’s Richard B. Jablow Award for service to the guild.
Lisa Takeuchi Cullen, who has served on the Council since 2016 — and was last year’s recipient of the Richard B. Jablow Award — will be the guild’s next vice president.

Quibi’s #FreeRayshawn, written by Marc Maurino, captured the Writers Guild Award for Original & Adapted Short Form New Media.
The victory had a much different feel from last September, when the show won two Creative Arts Emmys in a breakthrough for the startup, which earned 10 Emmy nominations. A month after that bright spot, Quibi said it was shutting down after failing to gain traction during Covid-19 and burning through most of its $1.75 billion in funding. In January of this year, Roku announced it had acquired Quibi’s library, which plans to start streaming it later in 2021.
In his acceptance speech, Maurino thanked the WGA and “my fellow writers, who know the tyranny of the blank page.” He also thanked the show’s executive producer, Antoine Fuqua, and cast members including Laurence Fishburne, Cephas Jones and Stephan James.
Not mentioned among two dozen names in the speech was Quibi creator Jeffrey Katzenberg,...

The 73rd Writers Guild of America Awards took place on Sunday (March 21) in simultaneous non-televised ceremonies held in Los Angeles and New York. The WGA was the first of the guilds to be heard from in this extra-long Oscar season. But don’t look to these results for any clarity on the screenplay races at the Academy Awards.
The stringent rules of the WGA prohibit non-guild members from competing. This year, three of the 10 scripts nominated by the writers branch of the academy were deemed ineligible here: the adapted screenplays of “The Father” and “Nomadland” (which we predict will win the Oscar) and the original screenplay for “Minari.”
The guild did align with the academy three-for-five in Best Adapted Screenplay, with “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “One Night in Miami” and “The White Tiger” competing at both. “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “News of the World” round out the guild nominees. Our...

Another notable feat belongs to “The Simpsons,” which dominates the animation category with four of the six nominations. Despite premiering over 30 years ago, the Fox series shows no signs of writer’s fatigue. “Bob’s Burgers” and “BoJack Horseman...

On Night 4 of the remote Creative Arts Emmy Awards, Quibi got its Emmys breakthrough, earning its first pair of statuettes via #FreeRayshawn stars Laurence Fishburne and Jasmine Cephas Jones.
“As I sit here on my rooftop in the middle of Brooklyn, in the middle of a pandemic, and the social climate that we’re in, I am honored and grateful to be a part of an important story that is #FreeRayshawn, to be an emotional vessel to shed light on these victims and what their families go through,” first-time nominee Cephas Jones said. “Let’s vote in November, and let’s continue to tell these important stories.”

Quibi, in its awards-season debut, picked up two trophies at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Thursday night.
Both were for “#FreeRayshawn,” a police drama from from executive producer Antoine Fuqua: Laurence Fishburne and Jasmine Cephas Jones won the acting awards in the Emmys short-form category. It was Fishburne’s third career Emmy win, and the first win for Cephas Jones (“Hamilton”) and her first nomination.
The first Emmy wins for Quibi, which is led by Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman, don’t come as a surprise: The well-funded mobile streamer has paid handsomely for its originals — upwards of $100,000 per minute of programming from A-list Hollywood talent. All of its entries were in the short-form categories, which historically have been populated by series that are sidecars to TV shows.
Overall, Quibi had picked up 10 Emmy Awards nominations. But it was mainly competing against itself, since it captured four of...

On #FreeRayshawn, Jasmine Cephas Jones threw herself into the emotional whirlwind of a nightmare scenario, working tirelessly to get to the truth of a story that is, unfortunately, all too common in America today.
Created by Marc Maurino, the Quibi short-form series centers on Rayshawn (Stephan James), a young, Black veteran of the Iraq War, who finds himself in a standoff with a Swat team, after an incident with undercover cops results in unintended, fatal consequences. Trapped in his apartment with his wife and child, Rayshawn looks to social media and a sympathetic police lieutenant, in an effort to clear his name, before he becomes yet another victim of a corrupt justice system.
In the drama—which addresses the intersection of social media, the justice system, and police brutality against the Black community—Jones plays Tyisha, a wife and mother who has Rayshawn’s situation thrust upon her, when he comes home in a panic,...

According to Variety, Robin Schorr‘s Rcr Pictures has just optioned the feature film rights to Dennis Tafoya‘s crime novel, The Wolves of Fairmount Park. Marc Maurino has been hired to write the script, which follows “the drive-by shooting of two suburban teens, one of whom is the son of a police officer, outside of a Philadelphia drug den. The search for gunmen strains the community to its breaking point.”
Schorr is set to produce, with Dan Seligmann joining him. Tafoya‘s novel was published in 2010, which was welcomed to strongly positive reviews. In an effort to keep his book only in print, Tafoya refused to sell the film rights to his novel until, ultimately, the Rcr producers won him over. With book-to-film adaptations being so common and sometimes not very good, I can see the Tafoya‘s reservations about the adaptation.

I want to wish Marc a huge round of congratulations for this sale. Last fall, I posted a series of pieces strolling down Filmmaker‘s memory lane. In each, I looked back at a single issue of the magazine, and in the second post Marc responded in the comments section with his own story. He wrote about how he discovered Filmmaker Magazine at a film festival and how it made him want to get into independent film. Subsequently he worked, I believe, as an intern at Killer Films, and over the nearly two decades of this magazine’s existence he’s been a loyal reader.
