Uncoupled will not be returning for a second season after all. After releasing the first season of eight episodes in July 2022, Netflix cancelled the relationship comedy series in January 2023, despite it being a Top 10 show. Showtime picked up the series for a second season in February but has now cancelled those plans.
Neil Patrick Harris, Tuc Watkins, Tisha Campbell, Marcia Gay Harden, Emerson Brooks, and Brooks Ashmanskas star in the series, which follows successful real estate broker Michael Lawson (Harris) as he returns to the dating world after his partner of 17 years breaks up with him.

Former Netflix series Uncoupled won’t be going forward at Showtime after all.
The news comes a year after Showtime revived the comedy — which is produced by Paramount Global sibling MTV Entertainment Studios — following a cancellation at Netflix. The decision to scuttle the show comes after some work to rejigger it to fit the sensibilities of Showtime — now known as Paramount+ With Showtime after the premium cable outlet was integrated into Paramount’s flagship streaming platform.
Reps for Showtime couldn’t be reached for comment.
Season two of Uncoupled, which stars Neil Patrick Harris as a man trying to put his life back together after breraking up with his long-time boyfriend (Tuc Watkins), had been slated to film last summer but was delayed during dual strikes by writers and actors. Showtime won’t be coming to Uncoupled‘s rescue after all. The cabler has opted not to move forward with a second season of Neil Patrick Harris’ divorce comedy, which it previously saved after it was first canceled by Netflix, our sister site Deadline reports.
Uncoupled followed Nph as New York City real estate agent Michael Lawson, who suddenly found himself single after being unceremoniously dumped by longtime boyfriend Colin McKenna. The comedy’s eight-episode first (and now only) season ended with Colin returning to their apartment and telling Michael that he made a huge “mistake.”

Exclusive: Uncoupled is not getting saved after all. Showtime has decided not to proceed with Season 2 of the comedy series, from Emily in Paris creator Darren Star and Modern Family veteran Jeffrey Richman, Deadline has learned. A rep for the network could not be reached for comment.
The reversal comes a little over a year after Showtime stepped in to pick up the MTV Entertainment Studios-produced Uncoupled following its cancellation by Netflix after one season. Showtime’s creative team was to put the project into redevelopment to tailor it to the network’s sensibilities, and the decision not to do a second season came after months of work on that, sources said.

Actors’ Equity will hand out leaflets outside a workshop of the Broadway-bound Smash musical this week, “warning of the possibility of a strike” in light of ongoing negotiations with the Broadway League regarding compensation for work on shows in development.
Equity President Kate Shindle is expected to be in attendance when the union leaflets the Smash developmental workshop Thursday morning and Friday afternoon outside the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
The union’s Development Agreement with Broadway League producers covers the development of new works, usually prior to an intended Broadway engagement. Equity and the Broadway League have been in negotiations since January 22, 2024. The current agreement expired on Sunday, February 11.
Last week, the union, which represents more than 51,000 professional actors and stage managers in live theater, voted to authorize a strike against The Broadway League if ongoing negotiations fail. Equity is currently in the...

We’re getting closer and closer to the Smash musical coming to Broadway!
A musical version of the beloved NBC series has been in the works for years and it is expected to debut during the upcoming 2024-25 Broadway season, which is anytime between May 2024 and April 2025. Katharine McPhee, Megan Hilty, and other cast members are sadly not attached and a plot has not been revealed yet.
Well, some lucky fans are going to see an early version of the show very soon.
A six-week workshop will begin this month in New York City and it will culminate in five fully staged and choreographed performances in front of “recruited audiences.”

Producer Bob Greenblatt told Variety, “This workshop/rehearsal process will give the creative team a chance to get reactions from real theatergoers who will experience it for the first time in a theater setting.

“Smash,” the TV series about the making of a fictional Broadway musical, takes an early step toward becoming a real-life Broadway musical on Sept. 22, with a pair of industry readings led by Tony nominees Robyn Hurder and Kerry Butler.
Hurder plays Ivy, an actress cast in the lead role of a new musical about Marilyn Monroe, and Butler appears as Karen, Ivy’s understudy. Their characters share the names of two pivotal roles in the TV show, which also focused on the development of a Marilyn Monroe musical called “Bombshell.”
While it retains the series’ most recognizable elements, the musical adaptation of “Smash” departs in other ways with a storyline and cast of characters that are inspired by the series but not direct translations. “It’s definitely a new script,” said director Susan Stroman of the musical’s book by Bob Martin (“The Prom”) and Rick Elice (“Jersey Boys”). “It...

Uncoupled has found a new home following its cancellation on Netflix.
Deadline reported Friday that the Neil Patrick Harris comedy had scored a surprise pickup at Showtime.
The news comes amid a strategic shift at the premium cabler, which recently announced plans to become Paramount+ with Showtime.
As a result, much of the network's content is set to change.
Showtime canceled American Gigolo, Let the Right One In, and the new drama Three Women (despite never airing a single episode).
Several ended shows were also purged in the process, with shows like Kidding removed entirely.
It's unclear whether the purged shows will return somewhere else down the line.
Showtime also recently announced plans to expand the Dexter and Billions franchises.
As many as four spinoffs of the latter are in the works -- including Millions and Trillions.
For Dexter, we're getting a prequel called Dexter: Origin, a second chapter of Dexter: New Blood,...

In the type of trade you’d expect see in the NFL, Netflix and Showtime performed an unexpected show swap this Friday. Netflix’s “Uncoupled” has been picked up from cancellation by Showtime and will return for Season 2 at the channel, while Showtime’s unaired “Ripley” will now premiere on Netflix.
Now, Netflix and Showtime didn’t literally trade the shows for each other, but negotiations for the placement of both shows were apparently occurring parallel to each other, with news happening to break on the same day. “Ripley,” which was first ordered to series in September 2019 and stars Andrew Scott, has reportedly begun post-production on its eight-episode season. “Uncoupled” starring Neil Patrick Harris premiered its first season last July, and was canceled by Netflix last month.
Sources at Netflix confirmed to IndieWire that “Ripley” will premiere on the streamer. Sources at Showtime confirmed to IndieWire that “Uncoupled” has been picked up at the network.

“Uncoupled,” the romantic dramedy starring Neil Patrick Harris, has been revived by Showtime after being axed by Netflix last month in yet another move indicative of the premium network’s new strategy for original series.
News of the move comes after it was announced earlier on Friday that “Ripley,” the highly anticipated drama starring Andrew Scott, was in the final stages of moving to Netflix. Also recently, the completed first season of “Three Women,” with Shailene Woodley, was being eyed for a pickup at Starz after Showtime pulled the plug.

Turns out it’s not the end of the road for “Uncoupled.” The romantic dramedy starring Neil Patrick Harris has been picked up by Showtime for Season 2 after Netflix canceled the series.
Coming from “Emily in Paris” creator Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman (“Modern Family”), the series centers on Michael, a New York City real estate broker who, after his boyfriend abruptly breaks up with him and moves out of their shared home, faces the prospect of starting over in his 40s. Starr, Richman, Harris, and Lilly Burns serve as executive producers on the series. MTV Entertainment Studios produces along with Darren Star Productions, Jeffrey Richman Productions, and Jax Media.
The series premiered in full on the streaming service on July 29 of last year to strong reviews and managed a 73 Rotten Tomatoes critical approval rating.

Exclusive: Uncoupled, has been saved. I hear Showtime is picking up Season 2 (and potentially beyond) of the comedy series, from Emily in Paris creator Darren Star and Modern Family veteran Jeffrey Richman, a couple weeks after the MTV Entertainment Studios-produced show was canceled by Netflix. The Neil Patrick Harris vehicle "Uncoupled" has been canceled after one season on Netflix, according to Variety. The gay rom-com made just eight episodes before getting the axe; even the combined star power of Harris and "Sex and the City" creator Darren Star behind the camera couldn't save it.
"Uncoupled" followed Harris as Michael, a New York City real estate agent whose heart gets broken when his partner, Colin (Tuc Watkins), decides to leave him after 17 years together. Michael spend the next eight episodes attempting to get over Colin (when he's not trying to win him back), get the hang of the modern gay dating scene, and navigate relationships with his friends and a wealthy real estate client (Marcia Gay Harden). Harden received a Critics Choice TV nomination for her turn as a brutally honest woman going through a situation that parallels Michael's, but otherwise, "Uncoupled" didn't make much of a splash.

Uncoupled has been cancelled by Netflix after just one season.
The series stars Neil Patrick Harris as a man who must suddenly navigate life as a gay bachelor in his forties after his partner of 17 years suddenly walks out on him.
Alongside Harris, the series starred Tuc Watkins, Tisha Campbell, Brooks Ashmanskas, Emerson Brooks, and Marcia Gay Harden.
Uncoupled premiered back in July 2022, receiving generally positive reviews. In a three-star write-up for The Independent, Amanda Whiting wrote that the series’ jokes “feel like stabs at relevance that have already started going stale”.
When it was released, the series only stayed in Netflix’s Top 10 Most Watched chart for a week, leading many to speculate that a cancellation was forthcoming.
Now, Variety reports that the series has been cancelled by the streaming service.
Fans have shared their disappointment with the news on social media.

Viewers won't be getting any resolution to Michael's quest for love... or any of the other soapy twists from the finale of Uncoupled.
Netflix has officially canceled the Neil Patrick Harris comedy almost six months after its series premiere on the streaming service.
"Michael Lawson (Neil Patrick Harris) seems to have it all figured out," reads the official synopsis for the comedy from Darren Star.
"He's a successful New York City real estate agent with a great career, a supportive family, close friends, and a loving relationship with his partner of 17 years, Colin (Tuc Watkins)."
"But when Colin unexpectedly moves out on the eve of his 50th birthday, Michael is completely blindsided," Netflix teases.
"Overnight, he has to confront two nightmares: losing the man he thought was his soulmate, and suddenly finding himself a single gay man in his mid-forties in New York City."

Netflix is separating from Uncoupled.
The streamer has to decided to cancel Darren Star and Jeremy Richman’s rom-com series after one season, which premiered on July 29, 2022. The news doesn’t come as a total surprise, since the show didn’t make waves on Netflix the way some of its other originals have in the last few months and only made the streamer’s internal top 10 once the week it came out.
Uncoupled stars Neil Patrick Harris as Micahel Lawson, a successful real estate agent, who seemed to have it all — a supportive family, close friends and a loving, 17-year relationship with Colin (Tuc Watkins).

Netflix is not proceeding with a second season of Uncoupled, its comedy series from Emily in Paris creator Darren Star and Modern Family veteran Jeffrey Richman.
The cancellation is not surprising. The series, starring Neil Patrick Harris, barely registered on Netflix’s weekly Top 10 rankings, making a single appearance at #6 following its July 29 release. (Half-hour series are at a disadvantage in the ratings system employed by Netflix which measures hours viewed.)
Speculation that Uncoupled would not be continue at Netflix started late last year when sources indicated that there was an effort by series producer MTV Entertainment Studios to find a new home. The plan to move the series to a Paramount Global network, possibly Showtime, fall through, I hear.
Meanwhile, Netflix remains in business with Star as his comedy Emily in Paris continues to deliver big audiences, with its current third season making the Netflix Top 10 in 93 countries. The...

Neil Patrick Harris is showing a side of himself that we’ve never seen before.
In Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman’s new Netflix series “Uncoupled,” Harris stars as Michael, a gay New York real estate agent whose partner of 17 years Colin (Tuc Watkins) leaves him.
As Michael navigates dating again, stories of love, heartbreak, middle-age and unexpected sexual encounters unfold.
Harris is seen in various states of undress. In fact, the actor has his first on-camera gay sex scene on “Uncoupled,” with “Sex and the City” movie alum Gilles Marini.
“We did make out in that first scene and then between takes he goes, ‘Oh it is true? It is true what they say?’” Harris recalls. “And I said, ‘What do they say?’ And he goes, ‘I heard that it is better kissing another man than a woman and I can see this now. It is true what they say.

No offense to all the Carries and Charlottes out there, but Uncoupled is so very much the 40-plus New York rom-com confection that And Just Like That.. was supposed to be. And don’t worry, no Samanthas were harmed in the making of it. The frothy, frisky fun centers on Neil Patrick Harris‘ Michael, a trim and puckish Manhattan realtor who is unceremoniously dumped by Colin (Tuc Watkins), his partner of 17 years — right before the surprise 50th party Michael is throwing for him! From there, our non-hetero hero is thrust back into the world of dating and debating if he is even ready to try again, especially now that the terrain is littered with hookup apps, throuples and very scary selfies. Meanwhile, his pals — including artsy, self-conscious Stanley (Brooks Ashmanskas), bed-hopper Billy (Emerson Brooks), real-estate partner Suzanne (Tisha Campbell) and haughty new client Claire (Marcia Gay Harden)—alternately play Cupid,...

Let’s get the “Sex and the City” comparisons out of the way quickly, shall we? Co-created by “Satc” mastermind Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman (“Modern Family”), “Uncoupled” — the new eight-episode Netflix series headlined by the immensely appealing Neil Patrick Harris, returning to sitcoms nearly a decade after nine seasons as the suit-wearing, womanizing Barney Stinson on “How I Met Your Mother” — centers on the romantic escapades of the emotionally messy but impeccably dressed Michael (Harris) and his trio of closest friends. That includes single mother and straight talker Suzanne (sitcom vet Tisha Campbell), Michael’s partner in the multimillion-dollar Manhattan residential real estate biz; the sex-obsessed Billy (Emerson Brooks), a TV weatherman who never met a younger man he didn’t like; and self-deprecating art dealer Stanley, who’s so highbrow he sends a naked pen-and-ink sketch to potential hookups. Shades of Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte, yes? And just like “Satc,...

Uncoupled Review: Neil Patrick Harris Exposes Himself (Emotionally) in Netflix's Gay Romantic Comedy
Neil Patrick Harris spent nine seasons playing charming womanizer Barney Stinson on CBS’ How I Met Your Mother, and in his new Netflix comedy Uncoupled, his character Michael also wears nice suits and lives in New York City. But in other ways, Michael is the complete opposite of Barney: a mild-mannered gay man who has been happily coupled up with his boyfriend for the past 17 years. That happiness all comes crashing down, though, and Uncoupled — premiering this Friday; I’ve seen five of the eight episodes — is a mildly enjoyable, surprisingly dramatic look at Michael’s new life as a...

Midway through the first season of Uncoupled, Michael (Neil Patrick Harris) explodes with frustration after yet another promising hookup turns disastrous. “I’m not supposed to be here,” he yells at his perplexed date. “I’m not supposed to know about Botoxed buttholes, and PrEP, and no condoms. I am supposed to be sitting on my couch, watching TV while my boyfriend is chewing way too loud beside me. That is the world I want.”
In part, Michael’s reaction stems from personal heartache, having recently been dumped by his partner of 17 years. But he’s equally struggling with re-entering a scene he simply doesn’t get anymore — one in which even meeting guys at clubs, like he and Colin (Tuc Watkins) once did, involves connecting with them first on Grindr. Uncoupled, from creators Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman, is aimed squarely at the Michaels of the world.

(Credit: Barbara Nitke/Netflix) Luckily, he has support from besties Suzanne (Tisha Campbell), Billy (Emerson Brooks), and Stanley (Brooks Ashmanskas), plus a newly divorced client (Marcia Gay Harden). Star and Richman conceived Uncoupled after several real-life long-term relationships they knew of “imploded in a very specific way. It’s your worst nightmare but also a great jumping-off point for a romantic comedy.” Ultimately, they say the show proves “on the other side of the worst thing that can happen is hope.” Uncoupled,...

Both Meron and Shaiman posted photos – and, in Shaiman’s case, some Broadway-belting-style audio clips – of an all-star reading of the work in progress, with Meron writing, “Last week, Robert Greenblatt, myself and an unnamed producing partner, who has many incredible movie credits on his resume, proudly assembled this creative team that is breathing new life into our TV series—amazing book by writers Rick Elice and Bob Martin, the iconic score and then some by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and musical director extraordinaire Stephen Oremus.”
See the photos below.
Shaiman wasn’t quite as shy about that big movie production – no secret it’s Steven Spielberg – and provided a few more hints about the project.

Netflix debuted a first look at “Inventing Anna,” Shonda Rhimes’ new limited series set to premiere in 2022.
Inspired by Jessica Pressler’s New York Magazine article “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People,” the series follows Vivian Kent (Anna Chlumsky), a journalist investigating the case of Anna Delvey (Julia Garner), the German heiress and Instagram celebrity who broke into New York’s social scene to make friends and then steal their money. As Vivian questions whether Anna is anything more than a con woman, the two begin to develop a love-hate bond. Arian Moayed, Katie Lowes, Alexis Floyd, Anders Holm , Anna Deavere Smith, Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney and Laverne Cox also star.
The first look photos show Anna at both high and low points — enjoying herself while dressed in designer fashion and being visited by Vivian in jail.
