- He graduated from the University of Chicago with a bachelor's degree in history. He did graduate work with the school's Committee on Social Thought, where he studied under philosopher Hannah Arendt and received a master's degree.
- At St. Martin's Press, he oversaw Stonewall Inn Editions, which he started in 1987 as the first gay imprint at a major publishing house.

- Co-founder and early co-editor of Christopher Street magazine in 1976.
- Wrote three books - "Lovers: The Story Of Two Men" (Avon Books, 1979); "Decent Passions" (Alyson Publications, 1984) and "On Christopher Street: Life, Sex And Death After Stonewall" (University of Chicago Press, 2023).
- Co-edited the anthology "The Christopher Street Reader" (Perigee, 1984).
- Co-edited the anthology "First Love, Last Love" (Putnam, 1986).
- Has a brother Joseph.
