The Merata Mita Fellowship — an annual initiative named in honor of the late Māori filmmaker Merata Mita as a way to support Indigenous women-identified artists on the path towards making their first film — has been awarded to Libby Hakaraia. The Graton Fellowship, launched to support Indigenous artists from California-based tribes, will go to Tazbah Rose Chavez. Announced by Variety this afternoon, an authentic New Zealand monster movie titled Taniwha is currently in development, with Libby Hakaraia attached to direct the project.
Described as a “monster thriller,” Variety’s report indicates that the film is “already in the advanced development stage,” and “will boast the participation of Wētā Workshop.”
“The film is set in New Zealand 1,000 years ago, when humans still respected the laws of nature…
“When their peaceful world is completely destroyed by a brutal tribe, Keiha and Waikura, a devoted young couple, are chosen to lead the survivors to safety. Soon, Keiha disregards his wife’s advice and veers away from the agreed destination. As they venture into a strange yet seductive valley, Waikura’s intuition tells her something otherworldly is tracking them.”
“In the world of this film, Aotearoa [Māori name for New Zealand] had the world’s largest birds. The moa, a flightless bird over 2.6 meters tall and the pouakai,...

Beware! New Zealand is ready to hear the roar of its first “authentic” monster movie, “Taniwha.”
“If you ask any New Zealander what our own unique Indigenous monster is, they will immediately reply: Taniwha!” explains director Libby Hakaraia.
“In our Māori culture, they are very real: Every tribe has their own. They inhabit waterways, mountains, rivers, oceans and forests, and take many shapes. They are to be feared and respected as guardians, and they are avengers of wrongs.”
Now, they will also star in the film produced by Tainui Stephens and Desray Armstrong (Māoriland Productions), recently presented to the industry insiders at Canada’s Frontières.
The “monster thriller,” already in the advanced development stage, will boast the participation of Wētā Workshop.
“In the world of this film, Aotearoa [Māori name for New Zealand] had the world’s largest birds. The moa, a flightless bird over 2.6 meters tall and the pouakai, an eagle with a wingspan of 3-4 meters.

At Frontières Market and Forum, it’s all about the exploding heads.
“Big, bloody and messy explosions of heads. Old-school style explosions à la ‘Scanners’,” enthuses director Olivier Godin, who will bring neo-noir comedy “Anna Will Talk to Us” to its official selection, about a book that literally blows people’s minds.
The much-anticipated event, back for its 15th edition, is bound to satisfy the oddest of tastes, delivering the likes of “Animal Realm” – “Full on Wuxia. Total cyberpunk. Stop-motion animation in full action,” teases director Caochong Maing – or vampire story “Drawn” in which the bloodsuckers don’t actually drink blood.
“They infuse it, fueled not by visceral needs but capitalist demands for youth and beauty. The horror portrayed in this film is in equal parts beautiful, grotesque and unflinching,” says Cosmo Salovaara about his “class exploitation buttressed by vampiric motifs.”
Many projects, however, will also reflect current reality from the perspective of women,...
