There was bragging about the overwhelming statistics of annual hours viewed, a second appearance this week from Jamie Foxx and an open invite for deeper relationships with brands looking to cash in on Netflix’s wildly popular slate. Dan Lin, Netflix’s new head of film is said to want to create a film slate at the company with better quality films that are made for a more modest budget.
Last month it was announced that Dan Lin would be taking over the reins of Netflix’s film division following the exit of Scott Stuber.
For years, Stuber had been in charge of the Silicon Valley company’s movie slate and had overseen a huge ramp-up in development that at one point saw Netflix releasing a new film onto its service every week.
Of course, that made Netflix’s movie slate far, far larger than any of its studio competitors and while Stuber would eventually begin to shrink the number of films that the company put out, the general consensus was that Netflix suffered from quality control issues given that one person had responsibility for so many projects.

Cancelled Netflix sci-fi thriller The Mothership was “full of mystery and threat” and had “the makings of a classic,” its storyboard artist tells us.
In January, news broke that Netflix had made the decision to scrap The Mothership – a sci-fi thriller starring Halle Berry that had been shot and was initially scheduled for release in 2023.
To date, the only official comment we’ve heard from Netflix came from interim content boss Bela Bajaria, who at a press event in February said there were “lots of issues during production, and so everybody just felt like it was the right thing to… do something else together eventually.”
The decision to abandon a relatively high-profile movie with some Oscar-winning talent attached is unusual – Bajara herself admitted that the situation was “rare” – though not unheard of. Over the past year, Warner Bros has infamously scrapped the likes of Batgirl, Scoob! 2 and Coyote Vs Acme.

Exclusive: The Mothership writer-director Matt Charman has landed his first Netflix project since the Halle Berry movie was axed by the streamer, Deadline understands.
We are told that Charman is writing a UK-set TV series thriller set in the upper echelons of the British political sphere titled The Choice, with filming set to start in London imminently and the show due to be unveiled tomorrow at a Netflix event in the English capital.
The Choice is the first Netflix role for BAFTA-winning British star Suranne Jones, who will also be an executive producer.
During a 25-year-long career, Jones has appeared in hits including Doctor Foster, Vigil and Gentleman Jack, all of which sold to the U.S. Other credits include Channel 4’s I Am Victoria and Sky’s Save Me, while she is also working on a drama based on the life of five-time female world boxing champion Jane Couch.

Exclusive: After eight and a half years as SVP Drama Series at HBO, Nora Skinner is gong to Netflix where she will be VP in the streamer’s drama series team. Based at Netflix’s Los Angeles headquarters, Skinner, a former film producer and executive, will start at the end of May, reporting to Jinny Howe, Netflix’s VP of Drama Series.
Skinner’s appointment follows Howe’s promotion in January to oversee all of Netflix’s drama areas. Skinner is not backfilling Howe’s previous role. Netflix stuck the landing on a star-studded exhibition match between tennis superstars Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz this weekend. Stakes were high on the court, but the Las Vegas showdown was most effective as a lush advertisement for the streamer as a fledgling live sports destination.
Taking over the Mandalay Bay’s Michelob Ultra Arena, the inaugural Netflix Slam pit legend Nadal against 20-year-old Alcaraz. Rafa, as Nadal is affectionately known to millions of global fans, had not played since a hip injury flared up in 2023. Nadal has only faced Alcaraz a handful of times in his career and wound up losing to the prodigy in a nail-biting tie break.
No one really lost, though. Least of all Netflix. Branding was so pervasive in the hotel and casino that pedestrians lined up 100 deep to take photos in front of a “Netflix Slam” sign, installed on a massive wall of tennis balls.

In 2022, Dan Lin, the producer of “The Lego Movie” and “It,” was in negotiations to become head of DC Studios. It was a singular opportunity to reimagine the company behind Superman, Batman and other costumed heroes. But talks broke down. Producer, studio veteran and Rideback founder Dan Lin has been named chairman of Netflix Film to replace the outgoing Scott Stuber, effective April 1.
Lin will report to Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria and worked with the streamer on The Two Popes, and the new live-action series Avatar: The Last Airbender.
The appointment came sooner than many in Hollywood expected after it was announced in January that Stuber was to depart after seven years.
