Gareth Evans' new horror movie is streaming on Netflix, and he tells us about what went into the making of Apostle.
Gareth Evans hit the film industry like a freight train. No one saw The Raid coming, and it forever changed the landscape of action films to come. Even if you have not seen the film or its sequel, which was also helmed by Evans, you have seen the effects of its impact in other films from the latter entries in the Fast and Furious franchise to John Wick.
For his first feature length film since The Raid 2, Evans switched gears a little and made a mystery/horror film for Netflix, Apostle. The film follows Thomas Richardson (Dan Stevens) as he attempts to rescue his sister from the clutches of megalomaniac Prophet Malcolm (Michael Sheen), who is holding her for ransom, in hopes of helping...

Perhaps, in the spirit of spooky autumnal festivities, you decided to click on Netflix's Apostle, an original period horror film featuring Dan Stevens and Lucy Boynton. Before watching the movie, you may have known these fine actors from whimsical works such as Beauty and the Beast and Sing Street. Fun! But Apostle is not a charming musical. Nope, it's a grisly thriller with an ending so gruesome and maddening that you'll be heavily breathing while also scratching your head. If you need to tease out what the hell happened by the end of Apostle, we've got you covered, sans sketchy burlap sacks or creepy black robes.
Warning: Major spoilers for Apostle ahead!
Here's the basic premise of the movie: Former missionary Thomas Richardson (Stevens) goes to a remote Welsh island called Erisden, which is inhabited by a small but intense cult of people. The island's leader, Prophet Malcolm (Michael Sheen...

It’s been a busy few weeks which means I’ve been watching a lot of new films, but I’ve also fallen a bit behind on reviews for several of them. That being said, here are my thoughts on a quartet of movies I’ve recently had the pleasure of watching, including two Netflix originals—Gareth Evans’ Apostle and Timo Tjahjanto’s The Night Comes For Us (which hits the platform this Friday)—as well as Between Worlds from Maria Pulera and Henry Jacobson’s Bloodline, which features Seann William Scott as a serial killer.
Apostle: The last time filmmaker Gareth Evans dipped his toes into the murky waters of horror cinema, the results were the spectacular segment from V/H/S/2, “Safe Haven,” which still remains my favorite short from the entire V/H/S franchise. And for his latest film, Apostle, Evans shows no signs of...

Welsh director Gareth Evans burst onto the scene in 2011 with his searing action film, “The Raid,” which showcases the traditional Indonesian martial art Pencak Silat. The film was a huge hit, leading to a 2014 sequel, “The Raid 2,” and both films cemented Evans’ place in action film history. But with his latest feature film, “Apostle,” Evans left martial arts behind for horror: in 1905, Thomas Richardson (Dan Stevens) travels to a remote island in search of his missing sister, who has been kidnapped by a strange cult.
“Apostle” isn’t the first time Evans dabbled in the horror genre, nor is it his first take on a cult. In 2013’s “V/H/S 2,” Evans co-directed “Save Haven” with Timo Tjahjanto, which follows a documentary crew who attempt to infiltrate an Indonesian cult, and discover unimaginable horrors in the process. But while “Safe Haven” was a hit with horror fans, Evans knew...

Gareth Evans’ Apostle is a slow-burn detour around the director’s bruiser action sensibilities (The Raid franchise). More a feature reimagining of “Safe Haven,” that wicked cultist V/H/S/2 segment Evans co-directed with Indonesia’s Timo Tjahjanto, with a heavy emphasis on “slow-burn.” At 129 minutes, Evans explores a secluded hideaway settled by escaped “traitors” and overseen by a female goddess. Themes toy with sacrifice, blood donation, and a mother’s nurturing strength. It’s at times terrifying, at times plodding, but altogether a chill-worthy tale of revenge, discovery, and blind devotion to steadfast faith (that I wish Netflix would release in theaters because wow does the cinematography impress).
Dan Stevens stars as Thomas Richardson, an ex-priest and brother who must invade a naturalist cult to save his kidnapped sister. All Prophet Malcolm (Michael Sheen) wants is a ransom payday from Thomas’ father, but the furious son is not there to pay off ill deeds.

Starting tomorrow, the 2018 Fantastic Fest kicks off in Austin and this year’s lineup features an incredible array of genre-bending projects, plus a few highly anticipated movies as well. The festivities kick off with David Gordon Green’s Halloween (2018)and wrap up a week later with Drew Goddard’s Bad Times at the El Royale (which this writer will sadly be missing out on), but in between those two films, Fantastic Fest will also be screening over 150 different features and shorts, making it one of the greatest celebrations of genre filmmaking in North America.
With so many amazing movies and screening events happening over the next week, it was something of a fool’s errand, but this writer put together a list of 15 films from Fantastic Fest’s programming slate that I cannot wait to see over the course of the festival. And just because I’ve already had the...

Gareth Evans' newest film is coming to Netflix and the first trailer promises a creepy journey into the occult. Come inside to check it out!
While Gareth Evans made his mark with the incredible action of The Raid films (among my favorite martial arts movies out there), his latest film goes in a very different direction. Apostle sees him dip into the horror/thriller genre, and based off this first trailer, he's going to be wonderful at it.
There's a lot going on in this trailer, but all of it does a great job of setting up some serious tension and a pervasive sense of soemthing being wrong. I'm totally digging the tone/vibe. While I'm not a huge horror movie guy, I'm a big fan of Gareth Evans' Raid films and eager to see what else he can do.

The cult thriller is back in style! The first trailer has arrived for Apostle, the new film from writer and director Gareth Evans. The Welsh director made a name for himself with the staggeringly visceral action film The Raid and its ambitious sequel, The Raid 2, both of which feature delirious fight sequences and fiendish violence. Here, Evans seems to retain his flair for the outré, fashioning a ’70s style thriller in the vein of The Wicker Man (with some bits of Resident Evil 4 thrown in) while still maintaining his gnarly action trappings. One thing is for sure, there is some imagery in here that is quite imaginative and very ghoulish.
Apostle follows a man (The Guest and Legion star Dan Stevens) who travels to a mysterious island home to a very intense and very murdery cult (lead by Michael Sheen) in search of his sister. While the trailer promises a tense and wicked film,...

Though Dan Stevens recently made an impact on the big screen with Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast – a lucrative reimagining of the fairytale classic that ended up being a box office juggernaut – the actor’s next project couldn’t be more different.
It’s called Apostle, and comes to us from Welsh director Gareth Evans. If that name sounds familiar, it should. After all, Evans is the creative genius behind hardboiled action thriller The Raid and its divisive sequel, and after flirting with the possibility of potentially closing out the trilogy, he instead switched gears and decided to make this upcoming thriller, which is headed to Netflix next month and just premiered its first trailer today.

“The promise of the divine is but an illusion.”
The full trailer has been released for director Gareth Evans‘ new film Apostle and it looks great! Evans is the director of The Raid films, and he’s brought us a very different kind of film with Apostle. This movie tells a disturbing story that is filled with the kind of stuff that nightmares are made of! This is my kind movie! It looks like it’s going to be an insane ride!
The movie stars Dan Stevens and it’s been described as “a harrowing occult fable where the only thing more horrifying than madness is the sinister reality behind it.” Here’s the synopsis for the movie:
