Spoiler Alert: This contains major spoilers for the ending of “Civil War,” now playing in theaters.
“Civil War” production designer Caty Maxey was tasked with building a dystopian America that showed bombed-out buildings and abandoned cars that stretched for miles on the freeway. It was all part of her creative brief for Alex Garland’s latest film.
Garland drops audiences into the middle of “Civil War.” America is no longer united and there are warring factions. At the center of it all are four journalists who travel from New York to Washington, D.C., where the Western Forces of Texas and California are battling the Federal Government. Kirsten Dunst plays Lee, a photojournalist. She is joined by colleagues Joel (Wagner Moura), Jessie (Cailee Spaeny) and Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson). In Alex Garland’s “Civil War,” the Western forces of Texas and California hardly remember what they’re fighting for.
At least, Garland doesn’t say outright what they’re fighting for. The film, which had its world premiere at SXSW on Thursday, depicts a near-future U.S. at the climax of a civil war where the two most populous states have seceded. Rather than explaining the politics that landed the country in such chaos, “Civil War” focuses on a group of journalists who document all avenues of the conflict.
“The film is intended to be a conversation, so it doesn’t assert too much,” the British director said in a post-screening Q&a. “But I also believe that everybody understands internally why. This is also true of my country and many, many other countries that are dealing with the effects of polarization and populism: We don’t need it explained.

Little is known of Jennifer Lawrence’s secretive A24 project, but at least we now know a little more. Collider reports that Brian Tyree Henry, fresh off a breakthrough year that saw him steal scenes in “If Beale Street Could Talk” and “Widows,” has been offered the lead role opposite Lawrence. In addition, a few plot details are now available: The untitled film, written by first-time scribe Elizabeth Sanders and helmed by theater director Lila Neugebauer, will focus on a veteran of the Afghanistan War struggling to recover from a traumatic brain injury after returning home.
Lawrence will play said soldier, ending the sabbatical she took after last year’s “Red Sparrow.” An Oscar winner for her leading role in David O. Russell’s “Silver Linings Playbook,” she also received nominations for “Winter’s Bone,” “American Hustle,” and “Joy.” According to the Collider report, Lawrence “has been intrigued by the...

Passengers is a big budget sci-fi romance that has been bouncing around for years now, but with the massive box office success of Jurassic World, Sony Pictures has finally greenlighted the project with two newly massive stars: Jennifer Lawrence and Jurassic World’s Chris Pratt.
THR describes Passengers as Gravity with romance, and it’s a sci-fi set in the near future in which two cryogenic space travelers form a relationship on a spaceship when they are each awoken 90 years ahead of their destination. Morten Tyldum of last year’s Oscar nominated The Imitation Game will direct.
The film has reportedly been bouncing around for some time with numerous names attached, including Keanu Reeves, Reese Witherspoon, and Rachel McAdams. And the script by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Doctor Strange) is an original story that has likely met some resistance because it’s not based on a sequel a novel or anything of the sort.

Steven Spielberg and daughter Destry Spielberg on the Oscars' Red Carpet Steven Spielberg and daughter Destry Steven Spielberg and daughter Destry Spielberg arrive at the 83rd Academy Awards, held on Feb. 27 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Spielberg has taken home two Best Director Oscars: Schindler's List (1993) and Saving Private Ryan (1998). Schindler's List also won Best Picture, but Saving Private Ryan lost to John Madden's Miramax-distributed Shakespeare in Love. There was quite a bit of animosity at the time, as some felt that Miramax, owned by brothers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, overdid its Oscar campaigning – while still managing to sway enough Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members to vote for its film. Somewhat ironically, at the 2011 Academy Awards ceremony Steven Spielberg presented the Best Picture Award to The King's Speech. Toplining Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, Geoffrey Rush, Guy Pearce, and Claire Bloom, this British production was...

Last week we reported on Steven Spielberg’s plans to direct an adaptation of the cult sci-fi novel by Ernest Cline, Ready Player One. Color us excited. The novel involves players of a video game journeying into a virtual reality world rife with pop culture references and Easter eggs to the real world. The player who can decipher all the mysteries and references in the world wins the opportunity to control it. In Spielberg’s capable hands, it has the potential to be a technical marvel and a modern classic.
That is, if he actually makes it. Ready Player One poses some unusually problematic challenges on just a practical standpoint. Cline’s story falls into the “unfilmable novel” territory, not just for the digital world necessary for a filmmaker to recreate, but also in terms of licensing. Jennifer Lawrence turns 25 this August. In the first 24 years of her life she's become a three-time Oscar nominated actress, an Oscar winner and star of not one, but two major franchises, both of which will be coming to a conclusion in the near future with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 arriving in theaters in November and X-Men: Apocalypse on May 27, 2016. While Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer told analysts back in February that he is "actively looking at some development and thinking about prequel and sequel possibilities" for The Hunger Games there is no word on whether or not that would involve Lawrence, but it seems one thing is for certain, no matter what comes after Apocalypse it won't involve Lawrence's Mystique. Speaking with MTV, Lawrence was asked if Apocalypse would be her last X-Men film and she replied, "It is my last one, actually. Yes." I know, not a lot,...

The world's biggest actress and the world's biggest director are teaming up for a new movie.
Deadline reports that Jennifer Lawrence and Steven Spielberg will collaborate on an adaptation of "It's What I Do: A Photographer's Life Of Love And War," the memoir of Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Lynsey Addario. Lawrence will star as Addario, whose book describes her work in some of the most dangerous regions of the world, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Darfur, the Congo, and Libya, and her capture by pro-Quaddafi forces in the latter country.
According to Deadline's report, the recently-released "It's What I Do" was a hot commodity in Hollywood when its rights became available, and several other star-studded teams were vying for the property. Lawrence and Spielberg reportedly beat out the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Margot Robbie, George Clooney, and the team of Darren Aronofsky and Natalie Portman for the project.
Warner Bros. is set to distribute the film.

In an interview with The Daily Pennsylvanian, producer Marc Platt nonchalantly revealed the title of Steven Spielberg's upcoming Cold War thriller, which stars Tom Hanks as an American lawyer recruited by the CIA to secure the release of a pilot in the Soviet Union: "Bridge of Spies," the term coined in the media to describe Berlin's Glienicke Bridge, site of several Cold War prisoner exchanges. Set for an October 16 release, in the midst of awards season, the film is but the first in a series of projects with Spielberg in the director's chair, three years removed from "Lincoln." Spielberg is attached to direct Jennifer Lawrence in "It's What I Do," based on the memoir by Pulitizer prize-winning photojournalist Lynsey Addario, and the rumor mill is at full speed since Deadline reported in late January that Disney—which purchased the rights to the famed franchise from paramount in 2013—is "eyeing...

As the sands slowly shift for that Chris Pratt/Indiana Jones affair that we’d be secretly okay with, another potential project for Spielberg has gained new life thanks to a deal being cut for its top star. Deadline have got word that Warner Bros. have nabbed Jennifer Lawrence to take the lead in true-life war tale, It’s What I Do, which will tell the story of Lynsey Addario, a renowned photographer whose work took her to some of the most dangerous locations in the world.
Adapted from Addario’s own book, A Photographer’s Life Of Love And War, It’s What I Do will focus on Addario’s career that took her to Afghanistan, Iraq, the Congo and Haiti to name a few. What could gain the most attention however, will be her time in March 2011, where she was held for six days in Libya, along with three other journalists.

It's been reported that Jennifer Lawrence and Steven Spielberg are to work together on a biopic of Lynsey Addario, a photographer who's documented conflicts all around the globe. The movie, It's What I Do, will be based on Addario's memoir, It's What I Do; A Photographers Life Of Love & War. Spielberg wasn't the only interested party, but he managed to outbid Darren Aronofsky, Margot Robbie and George Clooney who had the backing of The Weinsteins for the project. Given the subject matter it's easy to see why so many were interested in developing the book for the big screen, and with Spielberg and Lawrence now apparently locked in, it's time to start considering renaming the movie All Of The Oscars, as it's surely jumped the queue for a future awards season favourite.

Here's a pair who haven't yet worked together. Steven Spielberg looks like he's set to direct a new movie starring Jennifer Lawerence. The project that currently has them both attached is It's What I Do: A Photographer's Life Of Love And War. That's unlikely to be the ultimate movie title, but it's the name of a memoir by Lynsey Addario.
Due for publication at the end of the month, the book tells the real-life story of war photographer Addario as she seeks to photograph modern battles, both before and after conflict strikes. Not only did she fight into a profession generally deemed to be male-dominated, she also has taken pictures of war in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Darfur and the Congo. Her desire: to show the truth about war.

Jennifer Lawrence is being eyed up for a starring role in a new war film from Steven Spielberg.
According to Deadline, Warner Bros is set to close a deal for Lynsey Addario's memoir It's What I Do: A Photographer's Life of Love and War.
Bidders including Working Title and The Weinstein Company have apparently been fighting for the novel's rights after an excerpt was featured in The New York Times Magazine.
Addario, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, shares her experiences from within Afghanistan after 9/11 in the memoir.
The journalist looks into how Afghans suffered during moments such as the Taliban regime and the Iraqi War, and also details the time she was kidnapped by pro-Gaddafi forces.
Warner Bros has also lined up Andrew Lazar to produce the movie alongside Spielberg, should it secure the rights.
