There was a time when conspiracy theories were entertaining. No, seriously, I swear it’s true! In fact, tons of films took inspiration from them, including Prometheus, Transformers 3, and even the very first Captain America, just to name a few.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Christopher MacBride‘s paranoid thriller The Conspiracy, a found-footage indie gem in the vein of Eyes Wide Shut, only leaning more into the horror genre.
The film was inspired by actual conspiracy theories, notably those surrounding the Bohemian Club and the Bilderberg Group, both secretive organizations closed to the public and made up of a who’s who of power players in international politics and business.

Canadian actor and filmmaker Aaron Poole shared the first details of his arthouse father-daughter road movie “Dada” with Variety this week, shortly after wrapping principal photography of the film on Manitoulin Island, located north of Toronto in Lake Huron.
Working steadily in North American TV (“Most Dangerous Game”) and film since the late 1990s, Poole, a classically trained actor, stepped behind the camera for his Toronto-premiering “Oracle” (2020), which was nominated for best narrative short at Slamdance and won the top prize at Montreal’s Festival Du Nouveau Cinéma.
In “Dada,” Poole’s feature directorial debut, James Gilbert and newcomer Ciara Alexys play a divorced father and teenage daughter who drive around the perimeter of a nuclear facility on the eve of the girl’s 16th birthday, playing nonsense games and reading things.

There is a thin line between the mockumentary and the pseudo-documentary. While both categories warp the concept of non-fiction filmmaking, mockumentaries are satirical and often comedic, while pseudo-documentaries exist in the horror space. Think "Best in Show" versus "Cannibal Holocaust". The pseudo-documentary uses the idea of the truth to weaponize our fear. The more real the film seems, the scarier it is to the viewer. Yes, it's only a movie, but a good pseudo-documentary will worm its way into the back of your brain, asking, "But what if it is real?"
This category of film is often included in discussions of found footage films in general, as both try to convince the viewer what they're watching is real. Found footage is typically footage that is, well, found and is presented as unedited evidence of a crime, haunting, creature, or anything terrifying, but, with the pseudo-documentary, the filmmakers utilize interviews and...

I absolutely love films, in particular, horror films that have scenes that involve a lot of snow. Or, even better, if like Witches In The Woods, have a setting that is entirely snow-covered. Maybe it’s my love of Christmas and movies based around that holiday season or maybe it’s just how beautiful landscapes and nature look when covered with the white stuff. Or maybe it’s because when blood is sprayed or dripped on to snow, it looks really really cool. Whatever it is, I know I am going to enjoy a movie a little bit more if snow is featured heavily.

If boyhood friends going out into the frozen wilderness, only to encounter the supernatural left you cold in “Dreamcatcher”, take a walk down a similar, but much darker path in this extremely well done Canadian horror film.
The Corridor opens with one of the friends, Tyler hiding in the closet with the body of his dead mother lying on the floor in the hallway. His friends go into the house, only to find Tyler in a crazed panic and wielding a knife. He assaults them, and is then committed to a mental institution. Flash forward a few years later, and we get a montage of all the guys carpooling together to meet at the wilderness cabin that Tyler’s mother owned. They all spent happier days there as kids, and it seems like a perfect place to mend fences. Chris (David Patrick Flemming) is...

Christopher MacBride's faux-documentary uses found footage to spin its tale of the shadowy Tarsus Group
Faux-documentary The Conspiracy pulls off two tricks that alone warrant 82 crisply compelling minutes of your time: it makes conspiracy theories fun again (or perhaps it just makes them funny, as well as quite scary); and it finds new life in the increasingly threadbare found-footage genre.
Two small-scale Canadian documentarians named Aaron Poole and Jim Gilbert – the actors' real names – are profiling a conspiracy theorist named Terrance, who bears a žižek-y resemblance to those derelicts you see waving tin cups on freeway off-ramps, but who is building his own unified field theory of every conspiracy ever out of newspaper clippings, push-pins and pieces of string on his apartment wall. When Terrance disappears, the more credulous Aaron develops his theories, while Jim the sceptic holds his tongue. Key recurring elements lead them to the secretive Tarsus Group,...

“For you see, the world is governed by very different personages from what is imagined…” – Benjamin Disraeli, British Prime Minister 1874 – 1880
The Conspiracy is directed by Christopher MacBride, who makes his feature film debut behind the camera to tell this tale. The story follows two guys named Aaron (Aaron Poole) and Jim (James Gilbert) who are making a documentary about people who believe in conspiracy theories. It begins as a basic documentary as we follow the shoulder’s of these two filmmakers as they speak with people who believe in these ideas. It is striking, to begin with, by how realistic these opening scenes are where the camera rests on talking heads who are speaking about the topic at hand.

Stars: Stephen Chambers, James Gilbert, David Patrick Flemming, Matthew Amyotte, Glen Matthews, Nigel Bennett | Written by Josh MacDonald | Directed by Evan Kelly
Popping The Corridor into my DVD player I was first reminded of Lawrence Kasdan’s film adaptation of Stephen King’s Dreamcatcher – after all the plots are eerily similar: A group of friends head off to a snow-covered cabin in the woods and stumble across… something. In the case of Dreamcatcher it was aliens, in the case of The Corridor it’s something altogether more metaphysical.
Following his mother’s death, Tyler suffers a nervous breakdown, which results in him severing ties with his childhood friends. Years later, the group of friends decide to reunite for a weekend at his late mother’s country house in an attempt to rebuild friendships. Following his mother’s death, Tyler suffers a nervous breakdown, which results in him severing the flesh of this childhood friends. Years later, the group of friends decide to reunite for a weekend at his late mother’s country house in an attempt to rebuild friendships. Isolated deep in the snow covered forest, they stumble upon a mysterious supernatural hallway in the middle of the woods, which seems to give them a sense of euphoria. However it soon becomes clear that this energy force is transforming them into something much darker as one by one they turn on each other, taking their evil to the next level.

Conspiracy theories are a phenomenon capable of both intriguing and entertaining an audience regardless of actual belief. The key is in the ‘what if?’ scenario that the best ones present. Of course we don’t believe them, but what if? That tenuous line between fact and fiction nags at our imagination and pulls at the loose strands of doubt in our otherwise level-headed minds. It’s fertile ground for film and TV with some of the finer examples including The X-Files and Oliver Stone’s JFK, and now one filmmaker has come up with the idea to mix conspiracy theories with the faux documentary genre. Unfortunately that marks both the beginning and the end of the creativity Christopher MacBride applied to The Conspiracy. Jim (James Gilbert) and Aaron (Aaron Poole) set out to make a documentary about a man named Terrance (Alan C. Peterson) who spends his days shouting theories on a street corner and his nights...

How do you react when you walk past a strange man or woman shouting seemingly absurd statements about politics, aliens or the end of the world? Do you stop and listen intently? Do you retaliate with your own brand of biased retorts, or do you simply pass them by, putting every ounce of your being into convincing yourself they do not exist? Now, consider this… what if everything coming out of their loud, obnoxious mouths were true.
Writer and director Christopher MacBride invites the audience to consider this while viewing his film The Conspiracy, which is a faux documentary of sorts, but doesn’t attempt to fool the audience that it’s a real documentary. Intentional or not, there are signs that the film is a fictional production, from the way the documentary filmmakers are presented to the way in which the film is shot and structured. Conspiracy theories are a very interesting thing. Their main device is to question the way you think on particular events in history. Usually political questioning of our government. The Conspiracy is about two documentary filmmakers who lose contact in their subject Terrance who is a major conspiracy theorist. While the documentary, as the film presents it as such, seems to be mainly about the subject of conspiracy theories but finds a lot of information is provided by Terrance. After Terrance cannot be contacted, Aaron & Jim go to his house to see what is going on. His apartment is trashed and Aaron & Jim wonder if Terrance was an unstable mind to begin with or if something bigger is the reason for Terrance’s disappearance. Aaron begins to try to piece together what Terrance was working on before his disappearance and comes across what might be a secret society formed of powerful...

Conspiracy and paranoia go hand in hand. If "they" are powerful enough to control everything, "they" are powerful enough to control you. A shadowy government, one that secretly controls every historical events, is popular among conspiracy theorists, because it's just as frightening as it is unprovable. Writer/director Christopher MacBride takes this into account for The Conspiracy, a mockumentary about filmmakers uncovering answers to the secret government society mystery. Terrifying on many, many levels, it's a finely crafted film/documentary about seeking answers, and the paranoia that comes when you get them. Actors Aaron Poole and James Gilbert play the two documentary filmmakers who turn their cameras on Terrance, a conspiracy theorist who believes every major event in the United States' history has been choreographed by a secret society, one whose ultimate goal is a New World Order. At first, Terrance's claims fall on cynical ears, the two friends questioning...

Michael & I leave at midnight tonight and start our 14 hour drive into madness and film euphoria that is Fantastic Fest. Stay tuned throughout the week as we will have reviews for Frankenweenie, Looper, American Mary, Antiviral, Red Dawn and others. Among these more well known or heard of films there lies the indies. One independent film that I have had my eye on is the film called The Conspiracy. The film stars Aaron Poole, who is in Rodrigo Gudino’s (Publisher of Rue Morgue Magazine) debut film The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh, and James Gilbert as a pair of documentary filmmakers who are researching into conspiracy theories until their main subject ends up missing, plunging them down the rabbit hole further.

"Which one of us is really crazy?" Here's another trailer for a dark, weird, wacky Fantastic Fest film. It's a mockumentary called The Conspiracy, that starts out following a conspiracy theorist, but gets crazy quick when he disappears. This is kind of like if they combined Catfish and Kill List and Conspiracy Theory. Made by Christopher MacBride and starring Aaron Poole and James Gilbert, this doc explores conspiracy theories to the extreme; even the filmmakers get in over their heads. I'd actually love to see this is if I were attending Fantastic Fest, as I'm intrigued by what the heck is going on, and what the big twist/reveal is. Check it out! Here's the first trailer for Christopher MacBride's The Conspiracy, debuted by AICN (via SlashFilm): Two young documentary filmmakers are drawn into a shadowy world of secret societies when the subject of their film simply disappears.

Director: Evan Kelly. Writer: Josh MacDonald. Cast: Stephen Chambers, James Gilbert, David Patrick Flemming, Matthew Amyotte, Glen Matthews and Mary-Colin Chisholm. It is always surprising to remember that Canada has only created approximately 1500 films since 1911. This is surprising because there have been so many great Canadian films created over this time such as David Cronenburg's Naked Lunch or Allan King's The Last Season. Now, director Evan Kelly and Josh MacDonald's can add their Nova Scotian shot feature, The Corridor, to this excellent cadre of films. The Corridor begins as a thriller which transitions into a science fiction film. Along the way, five friends must confront a force that alters their minds. The corridor also changes their behaviours as friend turns on friend in a murderous fashion. The Corridor creates enough tension and enough mystery to leave viewers with questions and interpretations. The abstract elements are what stayed with this.

IFC Midnight will release Evan Kelly's Canadian thriller The Corridor this Friday, March 30th. A piece about male-bonding and miscommunication described as "The Big Chill slammed into The Evil Dead." Stephen Chambers, James Gilbert, David Patrick Flemming, Matthew Amyotte, and Glen Matthews all star. I recently caught up with Kelly on the phone to chat about his approach to The Corridor. We covered character, horrific acts, casting an ensemble and yes - the film's surface similarities to Dreamcatcher. Don't let that deter you though, Kelly's film is a much more focussed piece of work. "Tyler Crawley needs his friends, now more than ever. Recovering from mental stress in the wake of his mom's death, Tyler has been counting on a weekend with the guys to bring him back to normal....

Editor’s Note: This review previously ran as part of our Fantastic Fest coverage but with The Corridor hitting limited theaters this weekend, it makes sense to publish it once again. A sharp twist to the concept of getting together for a boys’ weekend (and the ultimate bizarre response to the influx of Dude Bro movies), The Corridor opts for rounded, deeply complicated characters who have the kind of shared history that is as likely to cause an outbreak of hugs as it is a burst of heated words and violent threats. The whole messy pile then gets an eyebrow-raising element right out of The Outer Limits dropped on top, and it’s off to the races. The film opens with a frantic confrontation where Tyler (Stephen Chambers) hides in a closet while his mother (Mary-Colin Chisholm) lies dead on the ground ostensibly by her own handful of pills. A brick wall named Bobcat (Matthew Amyotte), pretty...

Review originally published on September 27th, 2011 as part of our Fantastic Fest coverage.
My favorite science-fiction stories are often the subtle ones, films and literature that delve deeper into the philosophical of the genre pool, more than simply wading in the shallow end with fantastic technology and the sensationalism of aliens. The Corridor, written by Josh MacDonald and directed by Evan Kelly, does this well, while also mingling nicely with the psychological thriller genre.
The Corridor begins with a jolt to the viewer’s attention, firing a bullet of essential back story at point blank range, leaving a residue of smoldering mystery to ignite the slowly burning story that follows. Stephen Chambers stars as Tyler, returning from a stint of recovery after having a breakdown triggered by his mother’s death. In a show of support and to celebrate Tyler’s return, his four best friends decide to reunite with...

Shortly after its run at Fantastic Fest last year, The Corridor was picked up by IFC Films. Now, Shock has come to learn the distributor's IFC Midnight banner will release the film on March 30th.
After the jump, you'll find the official trailer. That's the poster on the left - a minimalistic, well done piece of work.
Directed by Evan Kelly, the film stars Matthew Amyotte, Nigel Bennett, Stephen Chambers, Mary-Colin Chisholm, David Flemming, James Gilbert and Glen Matthews. You can read our review here.
They’ve been the best of buddies for more than a decade, but now they’re changing – getting married, getting promoted, going bald, going insane. During a male-bonding weekend, they will discover a spectral corridor through the woods – an impossible hallway where none should be. It will lead these five men into fear, into betrayal, and into the biggest change of them all: by weekend’s finish.

Title: The Corridor Director: Evan Kelly Starring: Stephen Chambers, James Gilbert, David Patrick Flemming, Matthew Amyotte, Glen Matthews, Mary-Colin Chisholm, Nigel Bennett Enough films — mostly horror, but inclusive of all sorts of reunion movies — unfold in and around secluded cabins in the woods that it would probably not at all be a stretch to program a festival comprised entirely of said offerings. A lot of times this setting is the result of writing to a single, accessible, low-budget location, and there isn’t a whole lot of imagination or quality of performance that then raises the material, and argues for either the talent or continued professional opportunity of those...
