Like a divine consolation for our collective heartache, the world was gifted with an absurd volume of beautiful new things to listen to in 2016. But epochal new albums from the likes of Radiohead, Anohni, Frank Ocean, David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, and the sisters Knowles (to name just a few) only told a small part of the story, as much of the year’s best new music was Trojan horse-ed into our lives via the movies.

Every so often, a film is so innovative that it sends audiences running. Such was the case when “Swiss Army Man” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where the tale of a despondent island castaway (Paul Dano) and the talking, farting corpse he discovers and befriends (Daniel Radcliffe) inspired a seriously divisive responsive. No one is walking out now: “Swiss Army Man” led the specialty box office last weekend, (beating out the highly anticipated “Neon Demon”), and opens nationally July 1. It’s quickly becoming the breakout story of the summer. But while its directors are technically first-timers in the feature-length realm, they’re hardly newcomers.
The film’s success is largely due to its odd premise, dark humor, and — above all — a unique aesthetic that’s both tonally offbeat and profound. That aesthetic was honed by directors Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, who go simply by “Daniels,” during their rise...

Swiss Army Man is more than just a symphony of farts and boners — there’s quite a gorgeous score to go along with. To accompany the limited opening of the film, the full Ost has now been released to stream. The directorial debut of duo Daniels, the film follows Hank, a stranded man down on his luck (Paul Dano) who finds solace and maybe even a way home in the form of a talking corpse named Manny (Daniel Radcliffe). Due to the inherent isolation and lunacy of the conceit, Daniels’ wanted the entire score to be taking place in Hank and Manny’s heads — songs they’d create themselves — with no real instruments utilized (with a few notably poignant exceptions).
To make this bold choice work, Daniels turned to Georgia indie rock sensation Manchester Orchestra, with whom they’d collaborated on their music video, “Simple Math.” Lead singer Andy Hull...

Swiss Army Man, which hits theaters this Friday, has been making waves with its already-infamous title as the odd, farting corpse drama that shook and divided Sundance this year. Following a hopeless man (Paul Dano) stranded on a deserted island who finds a companion in a talking corpse (Daniel Radcliffe). One can see our review here. The minds behind the madness are the directing duo Daniels — Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, hence the name — and while this marks their feature debut, the pair have been working together for years.
Beginning in 2010, the two created a Vimeo and uploaded the official video for The Hundred in the Hands’ song “Pigeons.” From there, they spent the next five years crafting an assortment of commercials, music videos, skits, and short films — all seemingly working towards the distillation and realization of their collective cinematic voice with Swiss Army Man. Their most recent short, Interesting Ball,...

"The score is a huge part of the movie." A24 has released a new featurette on the making of the score for the craziest corpse movie of the summer, Swiss Army Man, directed by "The Daniels" - Dan Kwan & Daniel Scheinert. The music in the film is by Andy Hull & Robert McDowell, of the band known as Manchester Orchestra. They're also releasing a song in conjunction with the film called "Montage", featuring vocals by stars Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe, which is heard a bit in this new featurette. I'm glad that A24 is profiling different aspects of this film, since there's so much of it that is original, including the score (as they explain in this). If you aren't yet sold on this unique film, maybe these kind of featurettes will help. Enjoy. Here's the new featurette on the score for The Daniels' Swiss Army Man, from A...

One of the biggest reasons I'm going to see Swiss Army Man is because one of my favorite bands is involved! Andy Hull, lead singer of Manchester Orchestra, did the score for the film and did a really good job! It's unique, which falls in line with a film about a corpse that essentially doubles as a Swiss Army knife. See how it all came together below!
By the way, if you've never heard of Manchester Orchestra, they've had two songs on rock radio: "I've Got Friends" and "Simple Math." Check them out below the featurette!

Daniel Radcliffe plays a dead man who Paul Dano uses to ride the waves (via the power of his flatulence. Yep.) on a deserted island in Swiss Army Man. The film saw half of the audience leave in a rage and the other half enraptured when it debut at Sundance. The basic premise, as you may have guessed, is that Dano's character is trapped on a desert island alone until a corpse (Radcliffe) washes ashore. If this were Castaway, then Radcliffe's body would be one part Wilson and one part -- yep -- swiss army knife. Dano uses him as a companion, a weapon, and as mentioned, a wave rider. He rides him as the gasses leaving his body propel them forward. The score from Andy Hull and Robert McDowell of Manchester Orchestra is just as surreal as the film from co-directors Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. In a press...

Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano fittingly narrate their own montage in the short, pithy lyric video for "Montage" a song from their upcoming movie Swiss Army Man.
Manchester Orchestra's Andy Hull and Robert McDowell wrote the song and soundtrack. "Montage" is an exuberant, baroque indie pop track with the same cheekiness as Team America. Dano and Radcliffe provided vocals for the studio version of "Montage." And the video finds them acting out bizarre lyrics like: "Now we killed a raccoon/ We are using your body like it's a machine gun!

Last night, amidst the butts and the Feminism and the important message from Miley Cyrus, the VMAs bestowed its latest award for Best Direction to Daniels, aka Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, for helming the Lil Jon and DJ Snake music video for “Turn Down For What.” You didn’t miss that part of the show, because this category isn’t millennial-friendly enough for the telecast (nor was the one given to Oscar-nominated art director Anastasia Masaro), but somewhere in the night there were some Moonman statues given to a duo that might just be the franchise film directors of the future. In winning the award, Kwan and Scheinert follow in the footsteps of such notable directors as David Fincher (The Social Network), Spike Jonze (Her), Adam Yauch (Awesome; I Fuckin’ Shot That!), Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo), Tarsem Singh (Mirror Mirror), Jake Scott (Welcome to the Rileys), Samuel Bayer (Nightmare on Elm Street), Steve Barron (the...

You could know Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Kevin Devine from any number of places. In addition to an illustrious solo career and performances as Kevin Devine and the Goddamn Band, Devine was on the radar late last year as one-half of duo Bad Books with Manchester Orchestra’s Andy Hull. Now, Devine is one again giving fans new content to fawn over with two albums, Bubblegum and Bulldozer, set for release later this fall. The forthcoming dual release was funded by a Kickstarter campaign Devine began earlier this year. As usual, Devine’s fans blew away expectations, raising over $100,000 and claiming the title...

Coachella Music Festival released their official 2012 lineup in a tweet on Monday afternoon, and the headliners for each day are The Black Keys, Radiohead and Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg as the grand finale.
This year, the festival is experimenting with hosting the same exact lineup twice in a row over two weekends, which means that the dates for the festival are April 13-15 and April 20-22.
Fans who didn't snag a pre-sale ticket last year may be repeatedly rebuffed right now as Coachella.com is crushed under the weight of its own success. But since the festival is technically twice as long this year, we're guessing that tickets will be a bit easier to obtain than last year, when tickets sold out exactly one week after the lineup was announced.
For now, enjoy the official 2012 lineup in an easily searchable format, or scroll down for a look at the official lineup poster.

Christmas greetings to all; had enough of your Mum blasting out some Bruno Mars and your Nan playing Buble on repeat, well here’s my top 10 best albums of 2011 just in time, ready for some light hearted discussion on this year’s music.
Whilst 2011 was a killer 12 months for games fans, cinema was crazily mediocre, but the music world was blessed with another good year. I was lucky enough to attend the Leeds Festival, one as usual set amongst a hectic summer schedule of mud, sweat and tears. I also found myself buying more albums as the year offered some impressively talented LPs. Below is a list of my top ten favourite albums of 2011. As I have quite a mainstream taste for music, I’d love some further suggestions on what you think are the best albums of 2011, enjoy.

It's finally Vma time, guys! Going into the ceremony, held tonight in Los Angeles, Katy Perry led the nominations with 10, though the candy-coated pop tart wouldn't be taking the stage to perform one of her recent 5 #1 hits. There were tributes planned to Amy Winehouse and Britney Spears, while there wouldn't be a host for the third time in the show's history.
With all the theatrical performances, surprise guests, and out there fashion, one question remained: who would take home the gold (err, silver)?
Perry took home 3 of her 10 nominations, including the coveted Video of the Year for "Firework", but it was Adele that led the night with 4 wins. The talented Brit scored big in the professional categories, winning for Direction, Art Direction, Cinematography, and Editing. Lady Gaga was the only other artist to pick up more than one award, collecting two moonmen for her #1 hit "Born This Way". Other winners included Britney Spears,...

The age of 27 is when many good things die in rock and roll–Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, and, most recently, the sublime singer Amy Winehouse.
The MTV Video Music Awards marks its 27th year this time around. Can it beat the curse and stay vital?
First things first: There is no host this year. The network opted to go sans host in 2004 and 2007 as well. During those presentations celebrities and musicians both presented awards and introduced musical acts.

Last week, the nominations for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards were revealed in a live special that featured plenty of surprise guests (like multiple-nominees Katy Perry, Bruno Mars and Tyler, the Creator) and just as many actual surprises.
Perhaps nowhere was the latter more apparent than in the Video of the Year category, which saw Perry's "Firework" and Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" grab noms (as predicted), but also featured a trio of rather unexpected inclusions: Mars' "Grenade," the Beastie Boys' "Make Some Noise" and Tyler's "Yonkers."
In fact, though they're all worthy selections, this year's Video of the Year category might best be remembered for the clips that didn't make the cut. And we're not just talking about high-profile vids...

Eccentric singer Lady GaGa no longer dominates the nominations for MTV Video Music Awards. In 2010, the "Pokerface" hitmaker has got 13 noms, the biggest in MTV history. However, she only gets 3 nominations this year; Best Female Video for "Born This Way", Best Art Direction and Best Choreography each for "Judas".
Replacing the Mother Monster as the ruler of this years' MTV VMAs nominations is Katy Perry. The "I Kissed a Girl" hitmaker nabs 9 nominations, including the most wanted bid for Video of the Year and Best Female Video for her hit "Firework", Best Pop Video for "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)", as well as Best Direction, Best Editing and Best Special Effects for "E.T.".
Trailing behind Perry is English singer-songwriter Adele. She grabs 7 nominations, including Best Female Video and Best Pop Video, all for her hit single "Rolling in the Deep". Kanye West, meanwhile, is the top male nominee...

It's fitting that the leading nominee for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards is Katy Perry, since the California Gurl has had a massive year. Close on her heels is another diva who's had a breakout year: British songbird Adele, who rolled up seven nominations for her hit "Rolling in the Deep" from 21, the best-selling album so far of 2011. Among her nominations are Video of the Year, Best Female Video and Best Pop Video.

Like a whisper campaign about a tatted-up unicorn, Blink-182's elusive first reunion single, "Up All Night," has been the subject of chatter for years. The band first started talking about the tune in 2009, when they reunited after a nearly four-year hiatus, but because the recorded version of the song wasn't quite finished at that point, they decided against playing the song live during their subsequent tours.
But now they're ready to pull back the curtain on the song, which is slated to premiere at 10:30 a.m. Est on Friday. The tune will roll out on powerhouse Los Angeles rock station Kroq (106.7 FM) and on the band's official website, according to an announcement posted on the group's official Facebook page.

Summer is the season when music's biggest acts unleash hell on fans' bank accounts by all touring at the same time. The summer of 2011 is no exception — but what makes it special is that many of the supporting acts this season are so big that tickets become a two-for-one deal! And who doesn't love a bargain?
The biggest summer shows, and their big-name opening acts, include:
Nkotbsb with Jordin Sparks
Jordin Sparks will open for the much-hyped Nkotbsb tour, featuring the union of the two mega-boy bands that now compose one big "man band." The "American Idol" winner will be sure to give packed arenas their last shot of estrogen-infused power ballads and high heels before the testosterone-filled ninesome thunders in.
U2 with Florence and the Machine or Lenny Kravitz
U2 has enlisted a handful of opening talents to cover various portions of their everlasting 360 Tour.

It's the best and worst moment of every U.S. festivalgoer's life: schedule day. On the one hand, you can't wait to see when your favorite bands are playing and then start planning your long weekend. On the other, you dread the sight of two of your absolute faves playing on opposite sides of the mile-long field at Exactly The Same Time!
In which case Tuesday (June 7) morning was either a huge relief or a major bummer if you're planning on trekking to Chicago on August 5 for Lollapalooza. First, the good news: With the exception of a few headliner conflicts, the schedule is actually one of the most fan-friendly rundown in years.

I won't be receiving the Actual degree for another few weeks, but there are so many places in life where appearances are what matter and according to my family who have come to Miami to watch those ten seconds happen, this is one of those times. Besides, fetching the mail is never a good excuse to buy a fancy new dress and shoes and send out announcements. Part of what made Mean Everything to Nothing, Manchester Orchestra’s sophomore coming out party, such a dynamic and attention-grabbing effort was its strict dedication to sonic theft. Absolutely nothing they did was original, with the Atlanta quintet plagiarizing their way through rock history, lifting from Bright Eyes’ hyper-literate folk one minute and Nirvana’s tuneful alt-grunge the next. Singer-songwriter Andy Hull seemed hell-bent on tackling every trademarked form of rock composition, and while that fact may have resulted in a curious identity crisis, there was a winsome, borderline tongue-in-cheek quality to the whole affair that seemed to imply the band weren’t...

Every once in a while a band really surprises you. Manchester Orchestra's new album -- and especially the title track "Simple Math" -- does just that. The band's sophomore album "Mean Everything to Nothing" was hailed as a masterpiece, which meant there were a lot of expectations for the young band's next effort. But instead of living up to those expectations, Manchester Orchestra far surpassed them. Their new album, "Simple Math", due to hit stores on May 10th, is an album of intricate beauty and well-crafted songs, that reveal a depth of emotion far belying their youth.
The title track is a dense five minutes that builds from a quietly haunting starting place to a beautifully soaring and string-backed crescendo. The band is at their best in the song, layering rhythms on top of each other to create complexities of sound that you don't come across very often. The...

Set up in the shadow of downtown, sandwiched between the Ohio River and the picturesque Louisville Slugger minor league ballpark, the three-day eco-urban Forecastle Festival hosted one of the most high-profile lineups in its low-key nine year existence this weekend.
With a new location in a 70-plus acre riverside park that aimed for a mini-Lollapalooza vibe, the weekend kicked off on Friday night (July 9) with Forecastle faves Widespread Panic, followed by the reconstituted Smashing Pumpkins on Saturday (July 10) and the always-explosive Flaming Lips closing things out on Sunday night (July 11).
