The stars and artists behind the biggest films of 2023 descended on London this weekend for the BAFTA Film Awards. British film’s biggest night is often seen as the best predictor of Oscar momentum before the Academy Awards and the results often mirror each other.
If that’s the case this year, it will be all “Oppenheimer” all the time. Universal’s Christopher Nolan epic took home many of the night’s biggest categories, winning the top prize of Best Film along with Best Director for Nolan, Leading Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. The film also picked up major craft wins for Cinematography, Editing, and Original Score.
While the dominant showing makes an “Oppenheimer” Oscar sweep seem even more likely, Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” won for Costume Design, Makeup & Hair, Production Design, and Visual Effects, and star Emma Stone won Leading Actress for her...

“Poor Things” has performed well throughout this awards season, winning Best Comedy/Musical Film at the Golden Globes and snagging 11 Oscar nominations in total. That is the same number of awards the Searchlight Pictures movie was nominated for at the BAFTAs, where we predict it to perform well.
One person who is set to have a good night at the British film awards is Tony McNamara, who adapted Alasdair Gray‘s 1992 novel of the same name. McNamara previously worked with Emma Stone on “Cruella” and “The Favourite,” the latter of which was another Yorgos Lanthimos film. McNamara co-wrote that period piece with Deborah Davis. The duo was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars in 2019 but lost to “Green Book”.
However, they won the BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay, over “Cold War” (Janusz Głowacki and Paweł Pawlikowski), “Green Book,” “Roma” (Alfonso Cuarón), and “Vice” (Adam McKay). The film won six other BAFTAs in total,...

Nominations for the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards have been unveiled. Scroll down for the full list.
Leading the way this year is Christopher Nolan’s atomic biopic Oppenheimer, which snagged 13 noms, including best film, director, and adapted screenplay. Oppenheimer was one nomination away from equaling All Quiet on the Western Front’s record 2023 haul of 14 noms. Trailing Nolan is Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, who clocked 11 nominations with his latest black comedy, Poor Things. Lanthimos’ haul also includes best film alongside outstanding british film and adapted screenplay for Tony McNamara.
Chasing the leading two is Martin Scorsese’s Osage epic Killers Of The Flower, which clocked nine nominations. The 3-hour plus pic pops up in best film, supporting actor for Robert DeNiro, and cinematography for Rodrigo Prieto. However, the film didn’t land noms in either best director or best actress (Lily Gladstone), where it had been longlisted and earmarked as a frontrunner.

For the third consecutive year, the Spirit Awards will recognize outstanding achievement in uniqueness of vision, innovation and boldness in TV and streaming in addition to feature film. And for the second year, all acting categories are gender-neutral.

“American Fiction,” “May December” and “Past Lives” dominated the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards nominations on Tuesday, picking up five nods apiece. The three movies are all up for best feature, where they will battle it out against “All of Us Strangers,” “Passages” and “We Grown Now.”
The annual honors recognize the best of television, as well as film. “The Last of Us,” a sci-fi epic that was a ratings hit for HBO, and “I’m a Virgo,” an absurdist miniseries from Boots Riley that was produced by Amazon, led the small screen crop, with four nominations each. Only new TV shows that have run for one season and were released between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 of this year are eligible for awards. Andrew Haigh’s touching new drama All Of Us Strangers was the big winner at the 2023 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).
As the calendar year draws to a close, we’re also inching close toward the season that will see multiple prestigious awards bodies, in theory, hand the best films of the year a golden statuette. The season kicked off with the British Independent Film Awards, also known as BIFA 2023, which were held in London on the 3rd of December.
Lolly Adefope and Kiell Smith-Bynoe hosted the event which celebrated British cinema, especially the slightly lesser-seen films with budgets far smaller than that of Oppenheimer. There were some terrific films nominated this year, and the roster of winners was as surprising as it was satisfying.
Andrew Haigh’s All Of Us Strangers was the biggest winner of the night, taking home a total of four awards plus three previously announced ones.

The nominations were decided by panels of film and television critics, journalists, festival programmers and film curators. The winners were then selected by juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors and others directly involved in filmmaking. That makes these awards unique and often results in surprising winners like “The Rider” for Best Feature in 2018 over the higher-profile “The Favourite,” or Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”) for Best Lead Performance in 2022 over eventual Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”). A short wretch and slight taste of bile comes upon realizing we are firmly in “awards season,” that time of disgrace and degradation recently portended by the first round of Look Upon My Suffering Narratives––Bradley Cooper took two hours to apply a fake nose, but is that braver than Michael Fassbender never blinking?––and established, now, by the announcement of Gotham Award nominees. Credit where it’s due, though, that this voting body gives a mite more attention to films of substance and note: leading the pack are Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest and Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers, while a director nod went to Raven Jackson for All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, Cristian Mungiu earned a screenplay nomination, and Franz Rogowski might win a best actor prize.

All Of Us Strangers by Andrew Haigh led the Gotham Awards Nominations today, with some love for Celine Song’s Past Lives and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, and with a Best Performance nod to Ryan Gosling for Barbie after the indie-centric awards removed a longstanding budget cap on eligibility, an opening for big-budget studio and streamer fare to submit for consideration.
All Of Us Strangers was nominated for Best International Feature, Best Screenplay and Outstanding Lead and Supporting Performances for Andrew Scott and Claire Foy. Past Lives was nominated for Best Feature, Breakthrough Director, and Outstanding Lead Performance by Greta Lee.
The disappearance of the decade-old budget cap, which had been set most recently at $35 million, is the biggest change this year. The Gotham Film & Media Institute, announcing the shift last summer, said it was meant “to broaden our reach in terms of recognition and accessibility to the wider community.

Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal navigate the past and present of love in the trailer for All of Us Strangers.
In the film, helmed by Andrew Haigh, Scott stars as Adam, a man in contemporary London who has a chance encounter with a mysterious neighbor, Mescal’s Harry, one night near his tower block. As the relationship between them develops, Adam becomes preoccupied with the memories of his past, and is drawn back to the town he grew up in. In his childhood home, he finds his parents (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell), seemingly alive just as they were the day they died 30 years earlier.
The more-than-two-minute-long trailer, set to Pet Shop Boys’ “Always on My Mind,” captures the ethereal tone of Adam’s various relationships, from that initial intimate and vulnerable encounter with Harry to the otherwordly experiences with his family.

In Taichi Yamada’s 1987 novel, All of Us Strangers was a ghost story of a son reconnecting with his long-dead parents while navigating romance in the current era. In adapting this weird story for the screen, writer-director Andrew Haigh made some changes, largely making the main character gay, not heterosexual, and letting the ghostly elements disappear into a feeling that this is all happening in the present day, even if son and parents are essentially the same age.
The film traverses two eras through the eyes of one man, Adam (Andrew Scott), a lonely 40ish screenwriter who is dealing with midlife issues when a man from the same apartment complex comes knocking one day. Harry (Paul Mescal) is a more freewheeling and sexually comfortable soul who is looking for a more conventional gay relationship when he is thrust into Adam’s complicated world. And for Adam, that means an odd...

‘All of Us Strangers’ Starring Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal Set for Christmas Release by Searchlight
Here’s some good news: Instead of delaying a film to 2024 due to the ongoing strike, Searchlight Pictures has dated an anticipated new film for December of this year. “All of Us Strangers,” the new film from “Weekend” and “Looking” filmmaker Andrew Haigh, will open in limited release in theaters on Dec. 22, 2023.
The film stars Andrew Scott as Adam, a screenwriter who has a chance encounter with his mysterious neighbor Harry (Oscar nominee Paul Mescal) one night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London. The encounter “punctures the rhythm of his everyday life” and Adam and Harry get closer. But when Adam is pulled back to his childhood home, it appears his long-dead parents (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell) are both living and look the same age as the day they died 30 years before.
Haigh wrote and directed the film, which is based on the 1987 novel “Strangers” by Taichi Yamada.
