Despite the fact that much of its plot takes place in a futuristic city called Megalopolis, not a single winery was liquidated to finance “Molli and Max in the Future.” That only makes the existence of Michael Lukk Litwak’s debut feature more remarkable, as his futuristic rom-com creates an expansive sci-fi universe that spans four planets and three dimensions on a fraction of the budget of the studio blockbusters it tries to emulate. Written like a throwback Woody Allen movie — complete with rapid-fire quips and a jazz score —and shot like a stage play that relies on rotating backdrops, “Molli and Max” blends the scale of a space opera with the best and worst clichés of independent film.
Set one billion years in the future, the film begins with the reassuring news that the invention of flying cars has not reduced the prevalence of meet-cutes sparked by minor accidents.

Good romantic comedies seem to be hard to come by these days, even if the nature of relationships is always changing. Maybe that's why filmmaker Michael Lukk Litwak decided that the future was the right place to explore the numerous visible and invisible social expectations, cues, rules, and various stimulae we all encounter in trying to find love (and sex). In a far distant future filled with magic, robots, and gods, Molli (Zosia Mamet) and Max (Aristotle Athari) keep running into each other and trying to decide if their love is meant to be. The film premiered last year at SXSW, and our own Josh Hurtado was a big fan: "Eschewing contemporary aesthetics for a neon-soaked bobo-Bladerunner style future, the film uses its absurd settings...

"It's me! It's Molli!" Level 33 Entertainment has revealed an official trailer the indie sci-fi romantic comedy called Molli and Max in the Future, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Michael Lukk Litwak. I love this film! It's a nerdy, one-of-a-kind, tiny little sci-fi film riffing on When Harry Met Sally, but set in the distant future. Made on a tiny budget with practical FX and simple sets mostly in one location: a man and woman whose orbits repeatedly collide over the course of 12 years, 4 planets, 3 dimensions and 1 space-cult. Zosia Mamet and Aristotle Athari star as the galaxy-crossed lovers in the future. There's also appearances by a few others including Erin Darke, Okieriete Onaodowan, and Danny Burstein. It premiered at SXSW last year, but I caught up with this one in Sitges, and it's right up my alley. I wrote in my glowing review that "anyone will enjoy it...

The author Terry Pratchett, who has a quote for everything, once said this about Lord of the Rings: “J.R.R. Tolkien has become a sort of mountain, appearing in all subsequent fantasy in the way that Mt. Fuji appears so often in Japanese prints. Sometimes it’s big and up close. Sometimes it’s a shape on the horizon. Sometimes it’s not there at all, which means that the artist either has made a deliberate decision against the mountain, which is interesting in itself, or is in fact standing on Mt. Fuji.”
Molli and Max in the Future, the debut feature by Michael Lukk Litwak, is indeed standing on a mountain, and in this case – because this is a romantic comedy, not a fantasy – that mountain is When Harry Met Sally. It might be set in the future, it might have interstellar craft, robots, fish people, black holes, space...

At long last, “Saturday Night Live” is back. Season 48 of the NBC series was cut short due to the writers’ strike (hosts for the final two episodes of the season were going to be Kieran Culkin and Jennifer Coolidge), and Season 49 was delayed for the same reason, but once the WGA struck a deal with the studios, “SNL” writers — and cast members — went back to work.
Those who make it a habit to watch “SNL” when it’s on may be wondering, is “SNL” new tonight? Yes, “SNL” is new on Saturday, Oct. 14, which is the season premiere. Pete Davidson — who was due to host the May 6 show before the strike scrapped it — is the host with musical guest Ice Spice.
The episode will air live on NBC at 11:30 p.m. Et and stream live on Peacock coast-to-coast, at 8:30 p.m. Pt.

Matt Fechter, previously an agent with CAA and Hyperion, has joined Stride as a manager.
“When Matt said he was ready to cross the aisle, I knew he would be a great fit for what and how we are building over here at Stride,” said Stride’s co-founder Matt Shelton. “Matt has always been a managerial agent, so this feels like a very natural transition that aligns with his existing skill set. His easy charisma, endearing curiosity and intelligence shine through not only in the way he carries himself, but the people he surrounds himself with, and the clients whose careers he continues to build. We’re excited to have him here for the next chapter of his growing career.”
Fechter represents Aristotle Athari (SNL), Miles Brown (black-ish), Martin Martinez, Luke Millington-Drake, Maura Grace Athari (Interview with the Vampire), Jenny Gorelick, and Maggie Rawlins.

Making a rom-com that cuts through the clutter these days can be a tall order. Once a regular date-night megaplex staple, most seem to wind up buried on streaming platforms, easily lost soon after their release. So it’s welcome when a filmmaker comes at the genre with admiration, reverence and ideas about how to make it appealing to a modern audience. In “Molli and Max in the Future,” writer-director Michael Lukk Litwak works from familiar incredients in crafting his story of two mismatched lovers who bicker and feud on their way to realizing that they were meant for each other. There’s fast-talking repartee, witty dialogue and fantastic chemistry between his leads Zosia Mamet and Aristotle Athari. It’s in what he chooses to surround his lead characters with, that he foibles the surefire setup.

Saturday Night Live will enter a season of transition in 2022-23.
When the NBC late night fixture begins its 48th season Oct. 1, it will do so without longtime castmembers Aidy Bryant, Pete Davidson, Kate McKinnon and Kyle Mooney, who all departed the show at the end of season 47. Regulars Alex Moffat and Melissa Villaseñor and featured player Aristotle Athari also left over the summer, and Chris Redd announced his exit from the show in mid-September.
Four featured players (Marcello Hernandez, Molly Kearney, Michael Longfellow and Devon Walker) have joined the show for 2022-23.
Season 48 will open with three consecutive weeks of shows beginning Oct. 1. Top Gun: Maverick star Miles Teller will host the season premiere, with musical guest Kendrick Lamar. The following week will have both a first-time host in Brendan Gleeson and musical guest in Willow. Megan Thee Stallion will pull both hosting and musical guest duties Oct. 15.

"Molli and Max in the Future" is an out-of-this-world adorable romantic comedy that transforms the lowest lo-fi means into charms with a tractor-beam pull. Writer and director Michael Lukk Litwak shoots against a modular LED volume to create a cosmic universe where dating is still Earth-grade awkward. Props remind of resourceful high school theater productions of "Tron" while animation aims for "Blade Runner" or "Real Steel" except no more expensive than catering costs — which is never an issue because Litwak's vision explodes like a starburst of relationship charms. "Molli and Max in the Future" is the textbook definition of an indie darling that executes well above its obvious production restraints, as unique and boundlessly ingenious a film you'll find in today's media landscape.
Zosia Mamet stars as crystal harvester Molli — a human — who meets robotics-loving fish man Max (Aristotle Athari) by crashing into his spacebike. Molli gives Max a ride...

In the future, people will still be people, right? Actually, there are plenty of good reasons to think otherwise, but that’s the premise of Michael Lukk Litwak’s gently paced science fiction comedy, which screened as part of SXSW 2023. It follows the titular Molli (Zosia Mamet) and Max (Aristotle Athari) over a number of years as they meet, part ways, meet again, and so on, gradually recognising that there’s something important between them but repeatedly failing to do anything about it.
It’s a cartoonish future which borrows imagery from the likes of Blade Runner and Minority Report, letting us see the future in little snippets which are neither expensive to shoot nor overly distracting, the idea being that what we might find wondrous is really just wallpaper to two self-obsessed but still likeable characters whose concerns are not so different from our own. When we first encounter...

With ten seasons and six episodes logged on the show, Cecily Strong is the longest-tenured female performer in show history.
Not counting Weekend Update anchors, a third of the 18 cast members who have served for eight or more seasons -- Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett, Aidy Bryant, Cecily Strong, Kate McKinnon, and Pete Davidson comprise six of the longest -- are recent departures.
Recently, Lorne Michaels changed policies to let cast members stay on the show until they practically qualify for a Naarp membership and expanded the cast to gigantic levels. Since the mass exodous this past season and a cast size that's significantly smaller, it seems like the end of an era.
So without further ado, let us recount this reviewer's subjective opinion of producer Lorne Michaels' greatest mistakes and smartest moves of the last 10 1/2 years:

Cecily Strong got an Elvis goodbye on Saturday when host Austin Butler — who was later joined by the rest of the SNL cast — ended the show with a performance of “Blue Christmas.”
Even Kenan Thompson had a solo during the bittersweet number for Strong, who is leaving Saturday Night Live after 11 seasons on the show. A post on social media from SNL‘s official Instagram account for the sketch show confirmed Strong’s exit earlier in the day.
Strong made her debut on SNL as a featured player on September 15, 2012, and was upped the following year starting with Season 39. The comedic star co-anchored the “Weekend Update” segment alongside Seth Meyers. When Meyers left to host Late Night, Strong continued to co-anchor the segment alongside SNL writer Colin Jost for one season.

"Saturday Night Live" has seen quite the exodus of cast members over the past year. At the end of season 47 back in May, the series bid farewell to Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Pete Davidson, and Kyle Mooney. Then, before season 48 began this past fall, Alex Moffat and Melissa Villaseñor left the series along with featured player Aristotle Athari. Finally, the last cast member to walk away from the series was Chris Redd, just a couple weeks before the show's season premiere. Unfortunately, one more cast member has announced their departure, and sadly, it will before the end of season 48.

Ahead of the premiere of Saturday Night Live season 48, the late night comedy show lost eight of its castmembers, the biggest cast overhaul in a generation.
At the end of season 47 in May, Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney and Pete Davidson signed off of the sketch series for the last time. Their departures were followed by Alex Moffat, Melissa Villaseñor and Aristotle Athari in the summer and, finally, Chris Redd in September.
A few weeks before season 48 premiered in October, SNL shored up its ensemble with four new castmembers, who would join the show as featured players for the 2022-23 season: Marcello Hernandez, Molly Kearney, Michael Longfellow and Devon Walker.
According to standout Bowen Yang, having the new castmembers around has been “so seamless.”

“SNL” is taking the rest of November off, but when the show returns on “Dec. 3,” Keke Palmer will host with musical guest Sza.
The show announced the lineup Saturday.
The show comes three weeks after Dave Chappelle’s third time hosting — and third time hosting after a contentious election. Palmer meanwhile will be hosting after a contentious Thanksgiving holiday following that contentious election — or so we assume that’s how things will go.
Amy Schumer hosted last week’s show on Nov. 5 with musical guest Steve Lacy.
Season 48 premiere kicked off three new shows in a row, with Miles Teller hosting the first episode of the season followed by Brendan Gleeson on Oct. 8 and Megan Thee Stallion on Oct. 21.
The end of Season 47 marked the exits of cast members Pete Davidson, Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney, Alex Moffat, Melissa Villaseñor, Aristotle Athari and Chris Redd.

Less than a week after former "Saturday Night Live" cast member Melissa Villaseñor made it publicly known why she decided to end her tenure on the iconic sketch comedy show, fellow retiree Chris Redd has followed suit. While it's obviously no one's business why someone chooses to make a major life decision, the comedian recently guested on an episode of Marc Maron's popular "Wtf" podcast to set the record on why he added his name to the long list of cast members who left after season 47, including Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney, Pete Davidson, Aristotle Athari, Alex Moffat, and Villaseñor.
Redd told Maron that there were two major events that forced him to reevaluate what he wanted to do with his life, and both are unfortunately tragic. The first was the death of fellow comedian, Jak Knight, who Redd described as "one of [his] best friends." Only a few weeks later,...

Saturday Night Live recently kicked off its 48th season, not only with a handful of debut hosts but with a number of new cast members as well.
Following the latest cast shakeup, which included the exodus of Pete Davidson, Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, Kyle Mooney, Alex Moffat, Melissa Villaseñor, Chris Redd and Aristotle Athari, the series premiered its latest season on 1 October.
Returning members include Emmys host Kenan Thompson, alongside stars Heidi Gardner, Mikey Day, Andrew Dismukes, Chloe Fineman, James Austin, Punkie Johnson, Bowen Yang, Michael Che, Colin Jost, Ego Nwodim, Sarah Sherman and Cecily Strong.
However, with an incredible amount of turnover, there may be some confusion as to whether Davidson is gone for good.
Back in May, towards the end of season 47, the 28-year-old comedian announced his “emotional” exit, saying he “owes” the SNL cast “my life”.

The traditional hiatus between seasons of "Saturday Night Live" is usually when announcements of cast member retirements take place, but the break between season 47 and season 48 saw a mass exodus, with Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney, Pete Davidson, Aristotle Athari, Alex Moffat, and Melissa Villaseñor all announcing their departure. The latter had been a part of the show for six seasons and seemed to finally be finding her place on the prolific sketch series, and many believed she would be heading toward a star-player role in the wake of McKinnon and co's absence. When Villaseñor was announced to be leaving, the rumor mill immediately began circulating, with many implying there was something nefarious going on behind the scenes at 30 Rockefeller Plaza to inspire so many exits.
However, in the most recent episode of the Daily Beast podcast "The Last Laugh" with Matt Wilstein, Melissa Villaseñor joined to talk about her comedy career,...

Former Saturday Night Live star Chris Redd was assaulted near a New York comedy club Wednesday night.
The 37-year-old comedian and actor was punched by an unknown assailant outside the Comedy Cellar after arriving at the venue, an NYPD spokesperson confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
A preliminary investigation determined that the assault took place after Redd exited a vehicle outside the front of the club. That’s when the performer was approached by an unknown individual “without prior conversation or provocation,” according to the NYPD spokesperson, and punched in the face. The individual fled the location and Redd was left with a laceration to his face.
After Ems arrived on the scene, Redd was taken to an area hospital where he was treated and then released.
THR has reached out to reps for Redd and the Comedy Cellar.

NBC announced on Thursday that the next “Saturday Night Live” guest hosts for Season 48 will be Jack Harlow on October 29 and Amy Schumer on November 5. Former Saturday Night Live castmember Melissa Villaseñor opened up this week about her decision to leave the show, and it doesn’t sound like it was an easy one.
“It was my decision,” Villaseñor told The Daily Beast’s Last Laugh podcast. She went on to explain the terms on which she departed in September. “I gave myself a lot of time in the summer to think on it and kind of play out in my head if I go back. At the end of the day it was about my mental health. Last season, I had a couple of panic attacks. I think it was just…I was struggling. I always felt like I was on the edge of a cliff every week. And I was like, I don’t want to be doing that to myself anymore. And it’s not like the show was mean toward me or anyone.
