Specializing in fast paced story telling and observational humor… and being loud. Dane Cook can often be seen moving all over that stage as he uses his entire body to tell a joke. He also used social media to promote himself before that was even a thing. Mr. Cook comes off like your energetic roommate ranting in the living room after a few too man brewskis…and its kinda a beautiful thing to watch and like it or not, he was exactly what the world of comedy needed at that time. Dane Cook’s style was soon embraces by millions, allowing him to fill up stadiums with laughing frat boys and and comedy connoisseurs alike. He stole the hearts of many young people… and stole the jokes of many funny people… or just happened to have the same funny thought. The dude became more of a rockstar than a stand...

Any Given Sunday is considered by many to be the last genuinely great Oliver Stone movie to date. While the director has made his share of movies since this film came out in 1999, after the failure of his controversial epic Alexander, arguably, they have yet to have the staying power of the movies he made at his peak. Any Given Sunday was a departure for Stone, whose work to that point had been inherently political, but, on closer inspection, the movie carries many of his themes, such as American hero worship, corporate greed, and more. Al Pacino stars as a legendary coach whose team, the Miami Sharks, is floundering. Yet, a new hero on the Gridiron, Willie Beeman, played by a young Jamie Foxx, begins the rise and turns the team’s fortunes around. Dennis Quaid, Cameron Diaz, James Woods, Aaron Eckhart, L.L Cool J and real-life NFL vets Lawrence Taylor...

Ice Ice Baby. Go Ninja Go Ninja Go. If a guy was everywhere in 1990 and 1991, it was Vanilla Ice. A white rapper from Dallas, Texas – whose real name is Rob Van Winkle, the much-mocked but extremely popular rapper scored a multi-platinum debut with his album To The Extreme, which sold seven million copies and, at the time, was the fastest-selling hip-hop album of all time. His signature track, “Ice Ice Baby”, which sampled Queen’s “Under Pressure”, was the highest-charting rap single ever, as was his cover of “Play That Funky Music”.
Vanilla Ice was so popular among teens that he showed up as himself in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Ooze, where he sang “Ninja Rap” (Go Ninja Go). But, just as quickly as he rose, Vanilla Ice fell, with his acting debut, Cool As Ice, widely mocked as one of the worst films of...

Blue Beetle may have been a box-office bomb, but it also was the best-reviewed Dceu movie of the last two years. Now that Blue Beetle is available on Digital, fans can check out the movie in the comfort of their homes, but if you’re still on the fence, the 10-minute Blue Beetle opening sequence has been released.
The Blue Beetle opening begins with Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon) and Carapax (Raoul Max Trujillo) working to unearth the Scarab in Antarctica. Cue the title credits, and we meet Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) coming home to Palmera City fresh from graduation. Unfortunately, he learns that his family is in danger of losing their home due to financial difficulties.

No one could have predicted that Sound of Freedom would be one of the summer’s biggest box office smash hits. To put things in perspective, this $15 million indie outgrossed The Flash, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny in North America. Not bad for a movie that was initially dumped by Disney and distributed by a small, faith-based distributor called Angel Studios. Yet, while the success of an independently financed drama should be something that’s celebrated, Sound of Freedom‘s success has proven to be wildly controversial, with its critics slamming the film as being “QAnon adjacent” due to the movie’s star openly embracing many of the conspiracy theory’s beliefs. However, the makers of the movie say it’s apolitical, with the director recently slamming anyone trying to peg it as something it’s not.

Spoilers for Blue Beetle. Consider yourself warned. While Blue Beetle may be more light-hearted than other superhero stories, that doesn’t mean that there can’t be some life-or-death stakes.
Related Box Office Predictions: Gran Turismo looking at soft opening
The death of a family member or close friend in order to motivate a superhero has been done again and again, but… it does work. While speaking with Collider, Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto said that the original plan was for “nobody” to die, but DC Studios pushed for an “emotional death.” Unfortunately, that meant that Reyes family patriarch Alberto (Damián Alcázar) had to die, but Soto and screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer wanted his death to mean something more.
“‘How can we create the lowest of lows with the family member?” Soto said. “And how that low is not just another death in the superhero genre, but how that low...

Spoilers for Blue Beetle. Consider yourself warned. Although Blue Beetle may not be performing at the box office the way Warner Bros. was hoping it would, the movie has received warmer reviews than the last few DC movies. The film also has a connection to the new DC Universe as James Gunn has said that Blue Beetle is the first Dcu character. Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto told THR that the mid-credit scene could provide a clue to that Dcu future.

Enter the Dcu. Blue Beetle has arrived. The promotion for the film may seem stilted with the cast not being able to make the press rounds due to SAG-AFTRA regulations, but perhaps a quieter pre-release circuit could mean the bar for expectations sets audiences up for a more positive experience. The buzz has primarily focused on the film being not only the first character in James Gunn’s new universe continuity with the Dcu but also the first major mainstream Latino-centric superhero with a primarily Latin cast.
The film has also been predicted by box office analysts as being one that could beat the summer’s sensation, Barbie, this weekend. Blue Beetle has a certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 77% critics score and a 93% audience score. Also, the film has a 61 score on Metacritic with a 6.0 user score based on 43 ratings.

While the new DC Universe won’t officially begin until the release of Superman: Legacy, James Gunn has already said that Blue Beetle is the first Dcu character. That came as a huge relief to director Ángel Manuel Soto, as he now has the reassurance that the character of Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) will continue and that all their work wasn’t in vain.
“Yeah, that was for sure one of the elements of relief. It’s the fact that all of this effort was not going to die during this regime change,” Ángel Manuel Soto told THR. “We survived regime changes throughout this whole process, and that was a testament to the hard work that everybody put into it. There’s also a belief in our characters, who are now going to be part of this new DC universe, especially Xolo’s character and his whole family and Bruna Marquezine’s character.

It looks like Universal’s long-gestating Last Voyage of the Demeter had a modest preview night, earning $750k at the box office, according to Deadline. That means the film is only on track for a single-digit opening, with the trade noting it opened similarly to last summer’s The Invitation, which only eked out a $6.8 million opening weekend. That’s not a great result for Universal’s movie, which has gotten mixed reviews but was well-liked by hardcore horror fans, including our own Jessica Dwyer (read her review). Our own Brad Hamerly pegged the film as opening around $9 million, which seems higher than the preview night figures suggest.

Once upon a time being a nerd was looked at as a negative, with depictions of them being scrawny losers with glasses and high pitched voices who loved comic books and wouldn’t know how to throw a baseball unless Captain America taught them how. But something happened. Geek culture became mainstream culture and the people who brought it to us were the ones who once felt so alienated by their seemingly uncool passions. Enter Joss Whedon who used his childhood isolations to craft some of the biggest cult hit TV shows and penned many groundbreaking screenplays – everything from sci-fi to horror to action adventure to animation to Shakespeare and some of the biggest superhero flicks ever. But behind closed doors there seemed to be a different tale, a story of a man so consumed with ego that he made everyone else tremble in terror around him. It would seem...

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that today marks the opening of Paramount’s newest franchise bid, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The studio has been going all out promoting this big-budget adaptation of the classic game by Game Night directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. It looks like the various word-of-mouth screenings have paid off, with Deadline reporting that the movie has taken in $5.6 million in previews. Now, that comes with a caveat, as the trade says that a solid chunk of that number comes from preview screenings that took place over the last few weeks, as the movie has been aggressively pre-screened. As it is, Dungeons & Dragons had better previews than Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and even beat last year’s Uncharted, which made $3.7 million on its way to a $44 million opening. A number in that range would be...

George Lucas is arguably the most influential filmmaker of our era. While some would suggest Martin Scorsese or Steven Spielberg and have a point, Star Wars changed the movie business in a way no other film did before or since. Spielberg and Scorsese have more impressive filmographies, but Star Wars is still the blockbuster all others are measured against.
In this episode of What Happened to this Celebrity, which is written (with Brad Hamerly), narrated, edited and produced by Taylor James Johnson, we dig into Lucas’ rich but sometimes divisive legacy. We tackle his early days, with him having a notable flop in Thx-1138 that perhaps pivoted him away from the esoteric, and his eventual arrival onto the Hollywood A-list with his classic American Graffiti. From there, we explain how Star Wars got made, why he opted not to direct the sequels, and how, in the nineties, he decided to...

Louis C.K. is one of the greatest stand-up comedians of all time, but he’s also a widely controversial figure. Up until 2017, Ck would have been widely considered an icon, with amazing stand-up specials, movies and not one but two brilliant TV shows under his belt. While FX’s Louis brought him mainstream success, Ck was able to parlay that into a new sideline, making content directly for his audience that he could sell via his official website. One such project was the acclaimed Horace and Pete; indeed, Ck was, for a while, on top of the world.
Then, of course, allegations surfaced regarding the comedian’s sexual misconduct, which he admitted to, and overnight his career was seemingly in tatters. But, after taking some time off, Ck started appearing in comedy clubs again and reignited his stand-up career. His website, and the audience that was willing to buy content directly from him,...

Has there ever been a better filmmaking duo than the Coen Bros? Joel and Ethan Coen have made some of the greatest modern films, hitting it out of the park with their 1983 debut Blood Simple. From there, the list of classics goes on and on. There’s Raising Arizona, Miller’s Crossing, Barton Fink, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men, True Grit, O Brother Where Art Thou, A Serious Man, Inside Llewyn Davis – the list goes on and on. Yet, following the release of 2018’s The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, this formerly inseparable duo split, with Joel directing The Tragedy of Macbeth and Ethan making the Jerry Lee Lewis documentary, Trouble in Mind. What gives?

There was a time that Russell Brand was poised to be the next big comedy superstar. While already a controversial but well-known name in Britain, his role as rocker Aldous Snow in the Judd Apatow-produced Forgetting Sarah Marshall made him a star in North America. He was so popular that he got his own spin-off sequel, Get Him to the Greek, followed by an unsuccessful remake of Dudley Moore’s Arthur, which was critically reviled for stripping away the edge of the original. At this time, Brand, who was in danger of being best known for his personal life thanks to a high-profile marriage to Katy Perry, reinvented himself as a political activist and campaigner. His opinions have been controversial, particularly during the pandemic, but no one can deny that’s he a caring, careless campaigner, to the extent that his career took a backseat. It’s sad to think that most younger movie fans only know James Woods from his combative, controversial Twitter presence. In a lot of ways, he’s become a poster guy for the division between the right and left in Hollywood, with some saying he’s been blacklisted. In the 1990s, Tim Allen was one of the biggest family comedy stars in the game. Beginning his career as a stand-up comic at the Comedy Store, his brand of family-friendly, relatable comedy made him stand out from his contemporaries. This led to ABC building a sitcom around him, Home Improvement. The show, where he played Tim “The Toolman” Taylor, became one of the biggest shows of the nineties, regularly ranking near the top of the Nielsen ratings. It wasn’t a critical darling, but families loved it, with Allen becoming a household name.
However, his career hit a turning point in 1994 when he signed on to star in Disney’s The Santa Clause, where he played an everyday businessman who becomes the heir apparent to Santa’s mantle. Bob Clark’s 1983 holiday classic, A Christmas Story, is one of the most beloved family films of all time. While not a blockbuster upon its initial release, the film immediately became a cult classic thanks to cable, and close to forty years later, it is so well-regarded that it still airs 24 hours a day on Christmas Eve on TBS. But what happened to the cast of A Christmas Story? Recently, fans had the chance to see many of them in the sequel, A Christmas Story Christmas, with some exceptions.

If you came of age in the late nineties/early 2000s, you knew Limp Bizkit. You may have loved them or hated them – they were that kind of band…but whatever the case, you for sure knew who they were. Led by frontman Fred Durst, they were the faces of mainstream Nu Metal at a time when the genre was taking off. The band definitely never got the respect of a band like Korn or Rage Against the Machine – for a good reason probably. While Rage was all about non-conformity, Limp Bizkit’s lyrics were more about breaking stuff (to the point that one of their best-known songs is literally called “Break Stuff”), which led to the band getting a lot of ire from critics and even within the industry. Who could ever forget the sight of Fred Durst accepting an MTV award while Rage’s Tim Commerford climbed the...

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Julia Roberts was one of the dominant Hollywood stars for a good twenty-year period. From her breakout role in 1988’s Mystic Pizza, Roberts skyrocketed to the top of the A-list when she starred opposite Richard Gere in Garry Marshall’s Pretty Woman. An unlikely Cinderella story about an escort that falls in love with a high-powered executive, it’s a movie that is definitely a Hollywood fairytale, but one that a lot of people loved in 1990, with it being one of the year’s top-grossing movies. From there, Roberts made a string of hits, including Flatliners, The Pelican Brief, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Notting Hill and many more, but respect in more heavy vehicles eluded her. Movies like Mary Reilly and Michael Collins were embarrassing for how miscast she was, and for awhile, it looked like she would be stuck doing...

Billy Bob Thornton is an unlikely but enduring movie star. He blasted onto the scene as a character actor in movies like One False Move and Tombstone before his 1996 passion project, Sling Blade, earned him a best screenplay Academy Award while also netting him a Best Actor nomination. Made for just over 1 million, it was a solid box office hit, grossing 30 times its budget, and from there, Thornton’s career went into high gear. While his directorial career went on the back-burner after Harvey Weinstein cut his Cormac McCarthy adaptation, All the Pretty Horses, to shreds, his acting career was white-hot, earning a best-supporting actor nomination for Sam Raimi’s A Simple Plan and leading movies such as Monster’s Ball, Friday Night Lights, The Man Who Wasn’t There, and netting high profile supporting roles in Armageddon, Primary Colors, Bandits, Love Actually and so many more.

There was a time that Ozzy Osbourne was considered the most wildly unpredictable, dangerous man in heavy metal. This was the guy that bit the head off a live bat during a concert in 1982, drank Vince Neil’s urine and snorted a line of ants like cocaine amid a bender. The former Black Sabbath front-man was a legend, to the point that many of us, as kids, weren’t allowed to listen to his music or – God Forbid – watch his music videos.
But here’s the thing – Ozzy mellowed. First, in the late eighties/early nineties, he became more of a conventional metal guy with his killer album, No More Tears, but that was nothing compared to how, in the early 2000s, he became an unlikely pioneer of reality TV. His MTV show, The Osbournes, introduced us to his loving family, including his brilliant wife Sharon (responsible for much of...

In the early 2000s, Jack Black was having a moment. Richard Linklater’s School of Rock made him an unlikely leading man, with the film grossing 131 million worldwide. He was in high demand and bankable, so the time was right to finally produce his passion project – a film showcase for his cult two-person band, Tenacious D. The film, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny would be a big flop, only grossing 13 million worldwide. Still, in the years that followed, the film would become a kind of secret success, doing well on DVD and becoming a cult hit.
Indeed, all involved had good intentions going into this. Black was a massive star and cut his salary from a whopping 12 million to 1 million to get it made, and he would split the fee with his bandmate Kyle Gass. The movie would feature a who’s who of rock star cameos, including Meat Loaf,...

Now, I know what you’re thinkin’ punk; what’s the deal with making an episode about Wtf Happened to this Celebrity about Clint Eastwood? Nothing happened to him. He’s still making movies at ninety-two. Indeed, you would be correct – but we here at JoBlo are such massive fans of Eastwood that we couldn’t help but whip together an awesome Wtf episode exploring his life and legacy. The fact is, it’s unlikely any other actor has ever had the impact that ol’ Clint did. Sure, others were maybe better actors, but were there better “stars”? And not only that, but he’s been directing movies since the seventies, and some of them are all-out masterpieces such as Unforgiven, Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, and so many more. In this episode, we trace Clint’s humble beginnings, as a second lead on the show Rawhide, through his breakout...

If you weren’t alive in the nineties, it’s hard to do justice to just how popular Beavis and Butt-Head were. Their MTV show was cutting-edge stuff, notably, because the two Mike Judges creations often mocked the very same artists the network had only years earlier played to great success (just ask Kip Winger).
In the show, Beavis and Butt-Head’s adventures were intermingled with them providing commentary on music videos, something which would eventually be phased out as the brand grew in popularity beyond MTV. It was all part of MTV’s strategy to branch out beyond music videos, with its launch coinciding with The Real World and the start of MTV Films. The latter, of course, wanted to turn the teenaged animated phenomenon into a movie. After years of prodding, Mike Judge finally agreed to make Beavis and Butt-Head Do America. A Christmas of 1996 release, the film was a sizeable hit,...

If one were to list the greatest rock n’ roll frontmen of all time, Van Halen’s David Lee Roth would be near the top. With a swagger and look that seemed tailor-made for the MTV era, Roth was riding high in the eighties and, for a while, was among the biggest rock stars on the planet.
Think about the greatest rock songs of the era, and I bet “Hot for Teacher,” “Jump,” and “Panama” are among the first that come to mind. All three songs came from Van Halen’s most popular album ever, 1984, but despite their insane success, all was not well in the band, particularly between Roth and the late, great Eddie Van Halen. As a result of their tension, Roth went solo in 1985, and Van Halen brought in Sammy Hagar to usher them into the post-Roth era. While the band still did well with Hagar, it...

The last two years have not been good for Armie Hammer, and things will likely only worsen. With Discovery’s docuseries – House of Hammer – on the way, we look back at how exactly one of Hollywood’s most promising young stars ended up an industry pariah.
Before he went off the deep end, Hammer was considered a top-notch leading man. After making heads turn in David Fincher’s The Social Network, where he famously played Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss in a dual role, Hollywood was keen to make him their next big star. He immediately hopped into leading roles in big tentpoles. He was The Lone Ranger, and he starred in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., but both pricey movies tanked at the box office. Suddenly Hollywood wasn’t so sure he was bankable, but then a co-starring role in Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name...

If you grew up in the nineties, you undoubtedly grew up a massive fan of The Sandlot. A coming-of-age story centering around a group of baseball-loving kids who hang out every day in a Sandlot, the movie didn’t make much of a peep in theatres back in 1993. However, the box office didn’t tell the whole story, with the movie becoming a cult film on VHS, cable and later DVD, with writer-director David Mickey Evans eventually returning to make a Dtv spin-off, The Sandlot 2, while a prequel is still in development.
But what happened to all of the kids in The Sandlot? Unlike a movie like Stand by Me, there were no megastars like River Phoenix to emerge, but the cast still fared well in the years to come. Many have gone on to everyday lives, while others continue to work (successfully) in showbiz almost 30 years later. In this...
