Skinford was shot and released in its native Australia and apparently nowhere else, in 2017. A sequel, Skinford: Chapter Two followed in 2018. So, when I saw the title Skinford: Death Sentence pop up on my radar I naturally enough thought it was a third film in the franchise.
Then I noticed the plot and crew credits were the same as the original film with just a couple of differences in the cast. A quick check of the copyright date confirmed this is not a new film. As near as I can guess new sales agent/distributor Black Mandala saw its potential as a cult film and picked it up; they must have some faith in it as IMDb has an entry for Skinford 2: The Curse which bears a...

Six-part anthology series Fires, about the experiences of everyday people at the frontline of the 2019-2020 bushfires, will premiere on Sunday, 26 September, 8.40pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.
Filmed in Melbourne and regional Victoria earlier this year, the Tony Ayres Productions drama goes behind the images and the headlines to touch on the stories of people directly affected by the fires.
The series begins in Queensland in September 2019, at the start of the fire season, and continues as the fires make their deadly march south, burning out of control through Nsw and Victoria until February 2020. Each episode is set in a different location as the fires spread and build to a terrifying onslaught across the country through Christmas and New Year.
As the fires grow in intensity and ferocity and threaten different communities, new characters appear, whose stories reflect the breadth of experience during Australia’s black summer.

Trapped in an elevator! We've probably all spent more time in elevators than we wish, but what if someone diabolical imprisoned you an elevator? And then bounced you up and down within it, and then disclosed other evil plans in the near future? A sci-fi thriller hailing from Australia, Rising Wolf opens in theaters and is available on Video On Demand platforms today. The film follows the journey of a young woman who is trapped in a tiny, tiny room, due to circumstances beyond her control. (And haven't we all felt like that over the past 18 months or so?) Here's the official synopsis: "A young woman (Charlotte Best) wakes, trapped, kidnapped in an elevator of a super high-rise building at the...

Also known as Ascendant, Rising Wolf does indeed go up, being set mostly in a lift. Elevator, even, since our protagonist is in Shanghai and 'Lip' (Cantonese) or 'Dianti' (Mandarin) are presumably harder for Americans to say.
There's a lot of exposition, a lot of moving parts even if the main one is the elevator car that we and our protagonist is stuck in. That's the sometimes eponymous Wolf, Aria. Or is it Nina? This is one of the film's many deliberate uncertainties. Charlotte Best plays her well. Like any Australian actor she's had her chance in the trenches and three or so years in Home & Away is more than enough to get one's teeth in.
Gagged, bound, the opening scenes efficiently explore her surroundings as she does. The lift isn't as much dateless as it is a series of anachronisms, that mixture of old-fashioned future and futuristic old-fashioned. We'll get.

"I've kept everything you can do hidden, hoping to prevent them from finding you." Samuel Goldwyn Films has released a new official US trailer for an indie sci-fi thriller titled Rising Wolf, which also goes under the name Ascendant in other countries. This looks like a strange, but very slick, mysterious "eco-thriller" film about a young woman trapped in some kind of futuristic elevator. A young environmentalist discovers she's trapped in the elevator of a super high-rise building at the mercy of her tormentors. "Without any form of escape, and cocooned in the belly of the beast, Aria is forced to adapt her thinking, her beliefs and her endurance." Starring Charlotte Best as Aria Wolf, with Jonny Pasvolsky, Alex Menglet, Susan Prior, Lily Stewart, Justin Cotta, Tahlia Sturzaker, and Karelina Clarke. This seems like it's all style and no substance, without a coherent story to follow. It's hard to tell...

Promising ideas turn out to be mostly empty thought bubbles in “Rising Wolf,” a confusing and derivative Aussie combo of hostage thriller and sci-fi fantasy. Centered on a terrified young woman trapped in a Shanghai skyscraper elevator by a nasty Russian villain, this muddled attempt at an elevated genre film involving time travel, psychic powers and environmental doom can’t be rescued by strong visuals or a fine central performance by Charlotte Best. A box-office disappointment when released locally on 165 screens on April 8 under the title “Ascendant,” “Rising Wolf” has been acquired by Samuel Goldwyn Films and is reportedly set to open in U.S. cinemas on July 16.
The screenplay by first-time feature director Antaine Furlong and co-writer Kieron Holland brings together a straightforward hostage story with a YA-style sci-fi scenario about a heroine slowly realizing she has extraordinary abilities. The elements hold plenty of initial promise, but the mix...

It was always going to be a big ask for Stage 23.
Antaine Furlong’s sci-fi thriller Ascendant (formerly Rising Wolf) required the visual effects company to provide more than 400 VFX shots, including 2D composites, photoreal 3D environments, and complex supernatural effects sequences, all while navigating a global pandemic.
However, through the use of cloud rendering, an expansion of their team from four to 15, and a transition to a largely remote workflow, Stage 23 managed to overcome the odds to bring Furlong’s vision of a dark, near-future Shanghai to life.
The independently-funded feature, which is about a young environmentalist who awakes in the elevator of a super high-rise building at the mercy of her tormentors, is scheduled for release at the beginning of April, having been filmed at Fox Studios last year.

"Living here, you'll see, time has a way of standing still..." Dualist Films has unveiled an official trailer for an indie romantic comedy titled A Name Without a Place, the latest film from filmmaker Kenny Riches. This is an odd one. After a young man arrives in the Florida Keys, he meets the girl of his dreams. They escape troubles with the locals and stumble upon a secret estate of a narcissistic recluse, who may or may not have found the fountain of youth. Starring Charlotte Best and Bryan Burton as the main couple, Emma Lee and Gordon, plus Patrick Fugit, Elizabeth McGovern, Chris Parnell, David Sullivan, Siddharth Dhananjay, and Christine McCarthy. Well, this looks like an interesting film, not like anything else we've ever seen. I am digging Fugit's crazy-but-cool performance. If a group of mystical beings ascended from the ocean and insisted they now controlled your town and everyone in it, would you push back at all? That’s the central question at the heart of “Tidelands,” a new Australian Netflix series that sees modern-day sirens planning to overtake the community of Orphelin Bay. Of course, there are skeptics, people who are wary of these new “tidelanders” coming to infiltrate everything.
Then, guys show up murdered, sprawled out on the tops of cars. There are guns involved. Bad news ahead for Orphelin Bay, it looks like. As the people of the town figure out who to trust, old legends and new obsessions form the backbone for a series that looks like it’ll fill the “Siren”-sized hole in the hearts of all those Freeform viewers.
