Lucero give a heavy dose of punk-rock attitude in the new song “One Last F.U.,” the Memphis band’s first offering from their new album. That project, Should’ve Learned by Now, is due Feb. 24 and follows the 2021 album When You Found Me.
Kicking off with hard-rock riffs and copious cowbell, “One Last F.U.” has the defiant, sneering energy of Lucero’s loudest recordings, with frontman Ben Nichols in the role of someone who just can’t wait to get out of wherever he is. “It wasn’t...

Last March, Ben Nichols found himself in the same predicament as every other working musician: at home with an unusual amount of time on his hands. Fortunately, the singer and principal songwriter of the venerated Memphis band Lucero had just wrapped several weeks of touring in January and February, giving him and the group a financial cushion.
“We would have been in a drastically worse spot if we would’ve taken the winter off and were planning on starting a tour in March,” Nichols says on a call with Rolling Stone.

As California Governor Gavin Newsom toured the wildfire damage in the Deer Park area of Napa County on Thursday a new blaze, dubbed the Campbell Fire, broke out very close to the winery he co-owns with oil heir Gordon Getty. While it was quickly extinguished, the fire highlighted the precarious state of his property.
Newsom’s Plumpjack Winery off of Highway 29 near Oakville has been increasingly threatened over the past few days by the Glass Fire, which was ignited September 27 to the north, near Calistoga. The fire has scorched 57,000 acres and now stands at 5% containment.

Lucero illustrate family scenes across multiple generations in two new singles: “Hello My Name Is Izzy” and “’84 300zx (With T-Tops).” Prior to last week’s digital release, the songs were only found on the limited 7” vinyl single My Name Is Izzy, which came out last year.
Band singer-guitarist Ben Nichols wrote “Hello My Name Is Izzy,” a playful country tune, for his young daughter, and lyrically he has fun sharing anecdotes about the cheeky behavior of a developing toddler. With lighthearted lines about chasing cats and breaching the baby gate,...

Michael Shannon and director Jeff Nichols teamed up again for a short film project called Long Way Back Home. The film tells the story of a man named Stanton, who is searching for his two younger brothers in the backroads of Memphis. As you'll see, things get complicated when he finds them.
The short was made as a way to promote the release of the album "Among the Ghosts" from the band Lucero, which features Jeff's brother Ben Nichols on vocals and guitar. It's always good to see Shannon and Nichols work together. They've previously collaborated together on Shotgun Stories, Take Shelter, Mud, Midnight Special, and Loving. This short film turned out great.
The short also stars Scoot Mcnairy, Paul Sparks, and Ben Nichols. You can enjoy the short below and after you watch it, tell us what you think!

"You're not the only one lookin' for them." More work from Jeff Nichols and Michael Shannon? Yes, please. Long Way Back Home is a new short film written and directed by filmmaker Jeff Nichols. The short was made to promote the release of the album "Among the Ghosts" from the band Lucero, which includes Jeff's brother Ben Nichols on vocals and guitar. It's sort of a music video, but not really. Michael Shannon stars in this, along with Garrett Hedlund, Scoot Mcnairy, Paul Sparks, and Ben Nichols. Shannon and Nichols have worked together on all five of his films previously: Shotgun Stories, Take Shelter, Mud, Midnight Special, and Loving. Glad to see them continue to work together, always a thrill. Give this a watch. Thanks to The Film Stage for the tip on this. Jeff Nichols has only been making films for about a decade, and all five of them star Michael Shannon. As we await their next feature-length collaboration (which may be an Alien Nation remake), the duo has now reunited once again, this time for a seven-minute short film tied to Lucero’s new album “Among The Ghosts.” Titled Long Way Back Home, the cast not only includes Shannon, but Garrett Hedlund, Scoot McNairy, Paul Sparks, as well as Lucero bandmember and Nichols’ brother, Ben Nichols.
Filmed in Memphis, home of the band, and Arkansas, home of the Nichols, it follows Shannon as Stanton, a man looking for his younger brothers. “It felt inevitable that one day I’d team up with my brother and the rest of Lucero,” Jeff Nichols told Variety, “and once I heard the haunting sounds of ‘Long Way Back Home,’ I knew this song was the perfect opportunity to do it.

“What you gonna do with that pistol?” asks one brother to another in a chilling new short film inspired by Lucero’s “Long Way Back Home” and starring Academy Award-nominated actor Michael Shannon.
Directed by Jeff Nichols, the brother of Lucero frontman Ben Nichols, and shot in Lucero’s hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, the video is a dark, atmospheric tale of Shannon’s character, Stanton, going on a manhunt to find his estranged brothers — a True Detective story told from the wrong side of the law. In today’s film news roundup, Jeff Nichols makes his first music video with his brother’s band Lucero and the films “Brampton’s Own” and “Take Light” have gotten distribution.

“Loving” writer-director Jeff Nichols has moved into the music video world with the release of his short film “Long Way Back Home,” starring Michael Shannon, Garrett Hedlund, Scoot McNairy and Paul Sparks.
The seven-minute film, released Tuesday, is based on the eponymous track from Memphis band Lucero’s new album “Among The Ghosts.” The members of Lucero — Nichols’ brother Ben Nichols, Brian Venable, Roy Berry and John C. Stubblefield — also appear in the film.
Sarah Green, who produced Jeff Nichols’ “Loving,” “Midnight Special” and “Mud,” and Erin Freeman produced the film, which was shot by longtime Nichols collaborator Adam Stone. The video was filmed in both the band’s hometown of Memphis, Tenn. and the Nichols brothers’ home state of Arkansas.

There’s a point in recent Lucero shows when frontman Ben Nichols pulls back from his anthems of last calls and heartbreaks and leads the band in “Hello, My Name Is Izzy,” a lighthearted country shuffle penned for his two-year-old daughter. Sometimes she even comes onstage, earmuffs on, to dance.
That moment held a special joy for Nichols at the band’s annual Lucero Family Block Party in Memphis in April, where they celebrated their 20th anniversary over two days with support from friends like Turnpike Troubadours and John Moreland.

17. Home Invasion
The true sense of urgency in “Claimed” is reserved for the scenes with Rick and the gang of would-be-rapists and murderers invading the house. Seith Mann does a stellar job sustaining the tension in these scenes, as Rick tiptoes from room to room in search of either a weapon or an escape route.
16. Living Dead Doll House
“Claimed” features some memorable moments shared between Carl and Michonne who confesses bits and pieces of her former life to Carl, such as the former existence of her then-three-year-old son, Andre Anthony. There’s plenty of tension to be found in the house-clearing scenes as well, most notably the images of a family, laid out post-execution style in a pristine child’s bedroom. It’s also worth noting that the painting Michonne finds in the house, is a portrait of Mary, who we later meet at Terminus.

Updated: Yeah, it’s a little slow. Normally that’s a deal-breaker. If I have to choose between character development or story momentum, I’ll take “stuff happening.” This season I finally quit HBO’s Boardwalk Empire after the sad-trombone conclusion of too many sluggish episodes that left me shouting at the TV: “Don’t just end! Give me a reason to watch next week!”
Yet what happened this fall on The Walking Dead has been pretty remarkable. The show’s latest showrunner Scott Gimple has taken a series that’s been a rather disposable fun pulp-viewing experience for the...

After dominating so much of Season three, The Governor was a no show in the first five episodes of The Walking Dead’s fourth season. The last time we saw him, he was mowing down his own followers with a machine gun before escaping with his two favourite henchmen, Martinez, and Shumpert. We all knew he would eventually come back, but some of us were secretly hoping he wouldn’t return so soon. Unfortunately for everyone, he’s back, and this time the writers have dedicated an entire episode to his character. Guest Sean Colletti joins Kate and Ricky to discuss, what might be the most divisive episode of the series yet.

Growing up on a riverbank in the rural outskirts of Arkansas is equal parts bleak and beautiful. The stark landscape can feel confining, but when it is all you know (or the only place you want to be) it is easy to find the beauty in the things that surround you. And that is how we find Mud (Matthew McConaughey), a charismatic drifter with an eye for this beauty, but one who ends up in the exact place he should not be. Mud is a story of redemption, but Mud himself is driven by another emotion: love. And it is his love story that captures the attention of two young local boys, Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and Neckbone (Jacob Lofland), who end up learning more about themselves while trying to help Mud escape his own troubled fate. The film’s music, created primarily by David Wingo and Lucero, creates a captivating duality of sounding both ominous and playful...

In case yesterday's piece about "The Iceman" didn't clue you in, we're big fans of Michael Shannon around here. Last year, the actor shined in Jeff Nichols' psychological drama "Take Shelter," but before they made that film, the duo teamed on Nichols' directorial debut "Shotgun Stories," a beautiful Southern-gothic family drama produced by David Gordon Green.
With "Shotgun Stories," Nichols presumably saved some coin by recruiting his brother Ben Nichols, frontman of Souther-rockers Lucero, to score the film. And while "Take Shelter" saw Dgg regular David Wingo ("George Washington," "All The Real Girls") take over scoring duties, it looks like the siblings are set to reunite once more for Nichols' latest film "Mud," starring Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon and Shannon in a small role.
A recent profile in the La Times on the more senior of the Nichols brothers, Ben, notes that he had been "working overtime at Memphis' Ardent studios,...
