It’s not hard to imagine what Justin Peck heard in Sufjan Stevens’s 2005 album Illinois that convinced him that the music pulsated with possibilities for dance. Illinois, with its orchestral textures, surprising mixed-meter rhythms, and impressionistic instrumental interludes, is an explosively varied 75 minutes of music as Stevens’s lyrics traverse the history, geography, and iconography of the Prairie State. At its best, Peck’s stage adaptation, which arrives at the Park Avenue Armory following a run at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, suggests that rapturous movement was somewhere inside Stevens’s songwriting from the start.
In Illinoise (the show’s title follows the stylized spelling on the album’s cover), a 14-piece band including three featured vocalists, pay thoughtful homage to Stevens’s original arrangements. James Corden is one of the top-billed stars of “Cats,” Tom Hooper’s critically reviled adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, but he has yet to see the theatrical cut. The late night host revealed as much during an appearance on Zoe Ball’s Radio 2 show (via The Independent). The film opened nationwide December 20 and world premiered December 16 at New York City’s Lincoln Center. Corden, who plays Bustopher Jones in the film, attended the world premiere but according to Business Insider’s Jason Guerrasio the actor did not even come out on stage when called upon. Corden told Zoe Ball he yet to see “Cats,” but he’s well aware of the critical backlash. As Corden put it, “I’ve heard it’s terrible.”

Whether you find the titular characters in Tom Hooper’s live action adaptation of “Cats” adorable or horrifying, the truth is that a lot of work went into the singing and dancing creatures. The director and his team pioneered a new “digital fur technology” that merged footage of the actors on the film’s set with VFX, instead of the usual motion capture method that’s been employed in movies like “Planet of the Apes,” and “Avatar.” Here the actors become the cats without losing any trace of their on-set performance.
Hooper’s cats have long twitching tails and ears that react emotionally. The technology, despite helping to create an uncanny valley of cat-humans, is impressively detailed, particularly when you realize that the actors were dressed in tight, green suits during filming. To allow VFX to take over during post-production, the cast wore motion capture suits and face dots, which...

Judi Dench as Old Deuteronomy in “Cats,” co-written and directed by Tom Hooper.
Having seen the trailer for Cats, I must admit I approached the film with some trepidation. The highly-touted CGI effects to make humans catlike actually looked unsettling rather than magical. The good news is the effect is much less disturbing in the film itself. With music by Andrew Lloyd Weber, Cats is one of the longest-running musicals of all time, so has plenty of fans.
The musical debuted in London in 1988 and it is credited with starting the “mega-musical” craze. Along with innovative staging, it featured groundbreaking costumes, makeup, and choreography that turned dancers and singers into cat-like humans, much to the delight of audience, spawning a host of similar effects in stage shows. While I’m not personal a fan of musicals myself but I did enjoy T.S. Eliot’s classic funny quirky book of poems,...

The cast of Cats took their jobs very seriously. In an interview with E! News, Rebel Wilson and Robbie Fairchild revealed some of the hilarious antics the actors got into on set of the movie musical, one of them being a moment that perhaps got a bit too animalistic. When asked if she ever, in a moment of method acting, sniffed the butts of her cast mates, Wilson revealed, "I did. I sniffed Sir Ian McKellen's butt." Yes, you read that correctly. Rebel Wilson smelled Sir Ian McKellen's butt. As she continued, "Didn't smell that bad. I mean, that goes in my memoir, don't you reckon?" All kidding aside, Wilson told E! News that working on the film was "a...

Playing Munkustrap, the story's main narrator, Robbie Fairchild isn't the biggest name or the most recognizable face in the cast of the upcoming film adaptation of Cats, but he just might be the cast member with the most relevant career so far. Fairchild is a veteran of the stage, starting out as a ballet dancer and working his way up the ranks before shifting gears into some high-profile musical theater roles. Here's what you should know about one of the film's breakout stars!
Although he's been dancing in several genres since childhood, Fairchild's early career focused primarily on ballet. He joined the New York City Ballet, one of the country's most prestigious dance companies, in 2006, and was promoted to principal dancer in 2009. Fairchild spent eight years with the Nycb before stepping away in 2017. Dance ran in his family: his older sister, Megan, is also a dancer with the Nycb, and he danced alongside his then-wife,...

The prospect of a film about the iconic silent film star Louise Brooks was so tantalizing. The star with the sleek black bob and bold gaze was the most forward of the screen’s stars representing women breaking the social conventions in the Roaring ’20s.
The Chaperone is a tale of Louise Brooks at 16,as she is just beginning her path to stardom, which made The Chaperone seem irresistible. Yet, despite a fine cast led by Elizabeth McGovern and young Haley Lu Richardson plus a script by Julian Fellowes. The Chaperone falls short of that promise.

This PBS production reunites “Downton Abbey” writer Julian Fellowes and star Elizabeth McGovern in another period drama. Yet, directed by Michael Engler, in his first theatrical release after a long career in television, The Chaperone feels like a TV movie. Despite nice locations and pretty costumes,...

Veteran Actor Elizabeth McGovern steps out with her first producing gig in The Chaperone. The title is also the first narrative release for PBS Distribution, which had a who’s who screening earlier this week at MoMA in New York, hosted by publicity maven Peggy Siegal. McGovern stars opposite Haley Lu Richardson in the period drama, directed by Downton Abbey director, Michael Engler. It is a packed weekend of Specialty releases. Writer-director Kent Jones heads out with Diane, starring Mary Kay Place via IFC Films. Sundance debut doc The Brink opens via Magnolia Pictures, which financed the intimate feature profiling infamous right-winter Steve Bannon. Also opening is Israeli drama Working Woman from Zeitgeist Films in association with Kino Lorber. Greenwich Entertainment is maximizing the opening of the baseball season with doc Screwball. American Relapse is a self-distributed non-fiction title which captures 72 hours of two ex-addicts diving in to help others on the streets.

"She will need to prove that she can adhere to the moral code of Denishawn." PBS has unveiled an official trailer for an indie drama titled The Chaperone, based on the book by Laura Moriarty. This premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival last year, and also played at the Mill Valley Film Festival in the fall. The Chaperone is the other collaboration between "Downton Abbey" creator Julian Fellowes, who wrote the script, and director Michael Engler, who is also directing the Downton Abbey movie coming out this fall. Set in the early 1920s, a Kansas woman finds her life forever changed when she accompanies a young dancer as a chaperone on her fame-seeking journey to New York. Haley Lu Richardson plays the dancer, Louise, and Elizabeth McGovern is her chaperone Norma - which Louise's mother insisted upon or she wouldn't be allowed to go. The full cast includes Campbell Scott,...

“I know you’re pretty and the boys like you, but I’m here to protect you.” So says Norma Carlisle (Downton Abbey‘s Elizabeth McGovern), a local society matron in Kansas who never broke a rule in her life and impulsively volunteers to accompany Louise Brooks (Haley Lu Richardson) to New York while the teenager studies dance for the summer. The question is Norma’s motivation, which we learn in the first trailer for The Chaperone, from the Downton Abbey team of writer Julian Fellowes and director Michael Engler.
Brooks would go on to become a silver-screen star and flapper icon of the 1920s, but this film is based on Laura Moriarty’s fiction novel. Here’s the story: At 15, Brooks is a student in Wichita for whom fame and fortune were only dreams. When the opportunity arises for her to go to New York to study with a leading dance troupe,...

Is Auli’i Cravalho sending in her audition for Steven Spielberg’s reboot of “West Side Story?”
The 17-year-old star of “Moana” and NBC’s “Rise” took the stage at McC Theater’s annual gala, Miscast, a fundraising event where Broadway stars perform songs from roles in which they would never be cast. Hence the name, and Cravalho’s song choice “Something’s Coming,” which is originally sung by male lead Tony.
The Disney Princess teased the NY crowd starting off with the ballad that made her famous, “How Far I’ll Go,” but jokingly backtracked to her scheduled programming after the first few lines.
Cravalho’s opening remarks also revealed that when she was sent a list of potential songs to choose for Miscast, she had never heard the Leonard Bernstein-Stephen Sondheim number. “Don’t stone me please,” she pleaded with the theater crowd.

1. “Grace and Frankie” Season 3 (available March 24)
Why Should I Watch It? If Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda aren’t reason enough — not to mention the rest of the cast, including Martin Sheen, Sam Waterston, and June Diane Raphael — then know this: “Grace and Frankie” is a living embodiment of progressive beliefs. Not only does the show cover an array of taboo topics from the dramatic weight of right-to-die debates to casually breaking cultural stigmas surrounding post-menopause sex, but “Grace and Frankie” consists of half-hour episodes that don’t adhere to comedic or dramatic formulas. The tone is unique to the series, respecting the characters and building to moments of great power and great humor. So give it a try.
Best Episode: We haven’t seen Season 3 yet — Netflix, please send screeners at your earliest convenience — so we’ll simply say this: Midway through last year, when debating the best TV...
