Anvil, the Canadian heavy metal band that released the influential Metal on Metal album of the early ’80s and served as the subject of Anvil! The Story Of Anvil, is touring again as the highly-rated documentary is out for rerelease.
Guitarist Steve “Lips” Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner recently sat with uInterview founder Erik Meers to discuss what their life has been like since the documentary was originally released in 2009.
“We’re just carrying on our career quite nicely,” Reiner shared. “The band has become our day job. We love it. All we do is rock when we can.”
The documentary follows the band that had at one time been at the top of their genre but soon fell off the map due to multiple mishaps. Kudlow and Reiner shared some of the instances they think attributed to the downfall of their career.
“Bad managers. S–tty record companies. Being young.

The world re-premiere of the rock documentary “Anvil! The Story of Anvil,” which took place at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills on Thursday night, began when the movie started to play with the houselights still on. Then lights went off, except for a huge monitor just off the stage that continued to shine in the face of the audience. Then, after about a minute, the film lurched to a halt when the screen froze completely.
As a way to kick off a celebration of a film about an influential but only marginally successful heavy metal band that in some ways resembles a real-life Spinal Tap, it was perfect.
And “Anvil!” director Sacha Gervasi said as much when he came onstage after the snafu-filled opening. “As usual with Anvil,” he said, “there was a massive f—up!”
Then again, massive f—ups – and more importantly, the perseverance to get through...

Last Thursday, a stone’s throw from the former headquarters of Larry Flynt’s Hustler empire, a trove of thirsty teenage influencers, A-listers such as Dustin Hoffman and rock stars including Muse’s Matt Bellamy were queueing up to walk the red carpet at a movie premiere.
This wasn’t, however, the latest Marvel launch or an Oscar-bait opening. It was the re-release of a 13-year-old music documentary about a previously relatively unknown heavy metal band from Canada.
Anvil!: The Story of Anvil, a tale of hope and heavy metal, has been having quite the encore.
The film, directed by Sacha Gervasi, has been re-released by Utopia for a new generation of kids that seem willing to get in the pit for its heartwarming message: never give up.

The sequel to a beloved British family film, a heavy metal re-release, an Apple title from TIFF and Abigail Disney’s takedown of the American Dream populate the specialty film weekend in a market that may have found sturdier footing ahead of awards season and amid a dearth of blockbuster fare.
“I think there’s a lot we should be celebrating,” said Kyle Greenburg, marketing and distribution chief of Utopia. Its release, with Abramorama, of the latter’s restored 2009 doc Anvil!: The Story of Anvil rocked a 16K gross, or 8K per screen, from two single-show premiere events ahead of a one-day run coming Tuesday on 200 screens including AMC and Regal theaters and top arthouses. Exclusive: Anvil! The Story Of Anvil, the heartbreaking and heartwarming story of a veteran heavy metal band, is getting a wide theatrical release with its remaster.
The film, which is one of the rock docs that kicked off the genre’s boom ahead of the likes of Amy and Searching for Sugar Man, will be released in 200 theaters across the U.S., timed to its 13th anniversary.
It’s a rare move for a remastered documentary. The re-release – the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008 – will feature remastered picture and sound, as well as a new exclusive epilogue interview. The re-release comes from Utopia and Abramorama, which released the doc originally, alongside director Sacha Gervasi’s Portobello Electric.
A special one-night engagement in 200 theaters will take place on September 27 with select extended theatrical runs through October at national circuits including AMC and Regal Cinemas. This comes after a...

Tk Rock Documentaries You Can Stream Right Now
The best rock documentaries, or rock docs, or rockumentaries if you prefer, provide and unvarnished look at an already iconic performer or band. They peel back the layers of their on-stage persona while also offering intimate, magnetic performances that go beyond just the over-produced concert film. It has been a staple for so long that the parody film “This is Spinal Tap” might be the genre’s finest example. The latest in this vein is this weekend’s “Bad Reputation,” about the career of guitarist Joan Jett. So if after seeing that you’re in the mood for other rock documentaries, these are among the best and are all available for streaming now.
Don’t Look Back

50 fabulous documentary films, covering hard politics through to music, money and films that never were...
Thanks to streaming services such as Netflix, we’ve never had better access to documentaries. A whole new audience can discover that these real life stories are just as thrilling, entertaining, and incredible as the latest big-budget blockbuster. What’s more, they’re all true too. But with a new found glut of them comes the ever more impossible choice, what’s worth your time? Below is my pick of the 50 best modern feature length documentaries.
I’ve defined modern as being from 2000 onwards, which means some of the greatest documentaries ever made will not feature here. I’m looking at you Hoop Dreams.
50. McConkey (2013)
d. Rob Bruce, Scott Gaffney, Murray Wais, Steve Winter, David Zieff
Shane McConkey was an extreme skier and Base jumper who lived life on the edge, and very much to the full.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil
Directed by Sacha Gervasi
Whether you’re a heavy metal fan or not, you’ll appreciate Sacha Gervasi’s documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil as it lays out the surprisingly inspiring story of the Canadian 80s metal band whose star failed to rise, and how even after 30 years of disappointment, the two fearless friends who started it all maintain their never-say-die attitude.
The movie careens into action with flashback footage of a 1984 Japanese metal fest featuring Anvil alongside bands like Scorpions, Whitesnake and Bon Jovi. Anvil’s lead singer Lips dressed in bondage gear, slides a dildo across the strings of his guitar while taunting the thrashing crowd with his playful smile. Testimonials from members of some of metal’s biggest bands like Metallica, Motorhead and Slayer describe Anvil as the “real deal” and yet no one really understands why the band, in all their torn mesh,...

After narrowing the Oscar documentary feature shortlist to five at the 87th Academy Award nominations Jan. 15, a number of notable exclusions were featured, particularly Al Hicks‘ Keep on Keepin’ On, which documents the mentorship and friendship of a jazz legend and a blind piano prodigy, and Steve James‘ Life Itself, about the life and career of famed film critic Roger Ebert. (James is no stranger to snubs and the exclusion of his 1994 film Hoop Dreams led to rule reform within the documentary category.) Both films hold 97 percent positive ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.
Some films surprised when they didn’t even land a spot on the shortlist, such as Red Army, which examines the rise and fall of the Soviet Union’s hockey team from the perspective of its coach. That film holds a 100 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

With "Rock of Ages" thundering through theaters on Friday, the retro spotlight will once again shine on the crazy '80s, the decade of decadence when rock stars were true rock stars and unapologetic about being so.
In anticipation of the nostalgia this will inspire, we're looking at nine hard-rock and heavy-metal films that have made noise in the mainstream. Horns up!
9. 'Detroit Rock City' (1999)
While a majority of teen flicks tend to focus on love, partying and sex, 'Detroit Rock City' has a singular directive -- getting four teenage Kiss fanatics to a concert after one of their mothers burns their tickets and banishes her son to Catholic school. Naturally that's not going to stop them, and once reunited, the four garage bandmates (including Edward Furlong) go on a wild road trip that involves drugs, fights, a botched mugging and robbery, a strip club contest and other ridiculous situations.

Anvil have a new mission; that they plan to document for a follow up film to the brilliant 'Anvil! The Story of Anvil.' Robb Reiner and Steve 'Lips' Kudlow plan to rally the world and throw a peace concert in Israel.
The news was announced via a post on the band's Facebook, which was a transcript of a recent interview with musicfrenzy.net.
Robb: "Me and Lips are gonna try to rally the world and throw a peace concert in Israel, and they're gonna film it."
Lips: "The selfish endeavor of making it for ourselves is pretty much done. We're living the dream. Now it's like, what can we do to change the world? We changed our world, but what can we do to change the world to make it a better place? There's a way to use your celebrity for really good things."

Key band members have hinted at a follow up to the fantastic music documentary Anvil! The Story Of Anvil, and it'll be called Anvil! Quest For World Peace...
Anvil: The Story Of Anvil is one of the finest music documentaries of recent years and arguably of all time. It was a well made and engaging film focused on a real underdog story, where the stakes were high and its emotional core rivals many non-documentary features.
With that in mind, any news of a follow up is bound to raise interest, so when Drummer Robb Reiner and Steve “Lips” Kudlow spoke about a potential sequel in a recent interview with Music Frenzy, it certainly got our attention:

The 2008 documentary Anvil! The Story Of Anvil reintroduced the world to the sadly forgotten, influential Canadian heavy metal band, and the world graciously said, “Welcome back” (that is, after some of it said, “Why is your drummer’s name Robb Reiner, and does that mean this is all some sort of Spinal Tap homage?). Now, to repay the world for its hospitality and helping Anvil overcome years of bitterness and stagnation, the band hopes to solve all of the world’s problems: Reiner and bandmate Steve “Lipps” Kudrow have announced plans for a sequel, Anvil 2: The Quest For ...

Though the documentary seemed like it easily could've been a mockumentary in the same veing as This is Spinal Tap, director Sacha Gervasi painted an interesting, sometimes funny, but always honest, portrait of a lost metal band in Anvil! The Story of Anvil. The doc follows now middle-aged founders Robb Reiner and Steve "Lips" Kudlow as they recover from a disastrous tour of Europe and deal with the struggles of being out of the spotlight and trying to get back in it. Now, after the success of the first film, another one is coming in the form of Anvil 2: The Quest For World Peace. Yes, this is apparently a real thing. Details below! The Daily Swarm (via The Playlist) has the news which comes from the band's Facebook page: Robb: “Me and Lips are gonna try to rally the world and throw a peace concert in Israel, and they...

So are we all sure that "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" wasn't a spoof by now? Back when Sacha Gervasi's documentary about the Canadian heavy metal band hit in 2008 it was kind of hard to believe that this wasn't some kind of weird "This is Spinal Tap" sequel. Their drummer's name was Robb Reiner for goodness sake. This had to be some kind of insane meta joke, right?
Well, no, as it turns out. This was 100% real. Anvil were a real band with a fascinating history, but living a tragic reality. Robb Reiner and his band-mate Steve "Lipps" Kudrow made for brilliant protagonists, and if you haven't seen the film then we really do urge you to track it down and check it out. The doc gained the band some notoriety again and they are now riding on a second wave of success.

Things are going well for metal band Anvil right now. Since the documentary Anvil: The Story of Anvil reintroduced the once-forgotten band to the world, fans (including those famous ones) have been eager to hear more from the Canadian metal heroes. May 10, 2011 will prove that since their initial fame in the early 80s, Anvil has continued to rock as they release album number 14: Juggernaut of Justice.
I couldn’t wait to talk with legendary Anvil drummer Robb Reiner and excitedly made the call from my house in England to his studio in Ontario, Canada. A very engaging and openly honest man, Reiner was happy and eager to talk about his beloved band and music that he has been devoted to for over 30 years. With the new album, a Canadian tour on the way, plans to tour Europe this summer, and having been part of “the biggest rock movie ever,...

Los Angeles -- I wonder what this might mean. "Precious" did about as well as it possibly could have Friday might at the Independent Spirit Awards. It won for best picture, best actress (Gabourey Sidibe), best supporting actress (Mo'Nique), best director (Lee Daniels) and best first screenplay (Geoffrey Fletcher). Supporting actor Lenny Kravitz was in the house, but couldn't win because he wasn't nominated.
The Indie Spirits aren't the same sort of Academy Awards bellwether as the Golden Gloves, but the depth of support for "Precious" might suggest that the film will win more Oscars Sunday night than its one expected major winner, Mo'Nique. She and the popular winner Gabourey Sidibe gave the most heartfelt acceptance speeches; the film changed both their lives.

The Indie Spirit Awards: Ben Stiller hangs with porn stars, Jeff Bridges channels The Dude, and more
Last night, some of the biggest names in independent filmmaking gathered in downtown L.A. to celebrate everything that makes Hollywood break out in hives: feisty, gritty, against-the-grain movies that don't always have the benefit of shimmering star power to lure butts into multiplex seats. That said, there were plenty of celebs on hand at the 25th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards, including Ben Stiller, who joked winningly about the strangeness of being named Honorary Chair of the event since the last time he made an indie was the mid-90s. Then he invited some porn stars on stage with him,...

It takes a special brand of moxie (or delusion or intoxication) to play metal seriously. For the Toronto, Canada based Anvil, who are the subject of The Terminal screenwriter and former #1 Anvil fan Sasha Gervasi’s documentary, the outrageous dream of everlasting youth that fuels even the most pedestrian of aging rock bands to continue on is still in full force as its members grapple with life in their fifties. The film, which opens on Friday after a stellar, year long trip around the American festival circuit, chronicles the band’s origins, their decade of relative success and their fall into obscurity. For its members, Steve “Lips” Kudlow (lead vocals, lead guitar), Robb Reiner (the drummer, not the director of This Is Spinal Tap), Dave Allison (vocals, rhythm guitar) and Ian Dickson (bass), Metal is not something to be outgro ...
