You don’t have to throw out Little Feat to make room for Fleet Foxes
Google “ways to discover new music” and no less than 89,800,000 results pop up. Tons of websites, blogs, radio stations broadcasting the old-fashioned way and streamlining online, not to mention music sites like Spotify and Radio Paradise are dedicated to the proposition that all people deserve to discover new tunes.
So why are so many of our needles stuck in the “classic rock” groove, playing the same albums since 1992 -- or 1968? Not that there’s anything wrong with continuing to cherish the music we grew up with. For our generation, it would be hard not to: Some of the most enduring music (at least rock, soul, jazz and blues) was made when we were coming of age. But what I find frustrating is the misbegotten mindset that nothing new is worth listening to.

Here’s round two of my 10 Must-Have Albums series. I find myself discovering new music by new artists every day – while I don’t like it all, it’s worth the discovery.
My life – and most others – are made easier with music. Different genres, different sounds and styles; they all benefit humankind by creating a form of release – an outlet for emotional distress, and a form of communication. Whether for the listener or the musician themselves, music has shaped and moulded society for the entirety of humans’ existence.
All that being said, allow me to spread some of my personal favourite discoveries with you. Here are just a few albums from musicians that I believe deserve more recognition for their artistic ingenuity.

Stronger was recorded in a six-day session with collaborator Brett Dennen at The Village Recorders in Los Angeles, Calif. Alright, you hopefully read our Tribeca Film Festival review of Nicholas Stoller's "The Five Year Engagement" this morning. We hear that It's a sweet and funny comedy that veers off in tangents, but fortunately, it never loses its way.
Hot on its heels comes the info of the accompanying soundtrack Ep, a brief five-song set with some interesting and comical connections. For music-heads that like their swooning, bittersweet and soulful pop songs comes the reveal of a few Van Morrison songs: "Crazy Love," performed by Audra Mae, another cover of "Into The Mystic" done by The Swell Season (the musical duo from the film "Once") and "When The Evening Sun Goes Down" by Brett Dennen. We hear there's a least one actual Van Morrison song featured in the film as well.
Rather hilariously (and this writer assumes this is a minor comedic spoiler so watch out), the opening track...

While Miley Cyrus isn't the first person to come to mind when making a wishlist of artists to cover Bob Dylan songs, we have to admit -- we're really looking forward to this album.
Miley and a host of her contemporaries have joined forces to pay tribute to both Bob Dylan and Amnesty International with a new cover album. The record, titled "Chimes of Freedom," features a huge variety of artists -- from Pete Seeger to Ke$ha.
"Glee" star Darren Criss even makes a contribution to the four-disc compilation, covering New Morning with his brother, Chuck Criss, and his band the Freelance Whales. The jam-packed album, which "salutes Amnesty International's 50th anniversary and life-saving human rights work," is set for a January 24 release. Check out the list of songs and artists below to see which classic your favorite singer will be covering.

Television looks pretty sparse tonight but there's a few gems in there. The "So You Think You Can Dance" crowd gets to worship at the feet of Cat Deeley again, and "Ancient Aliens" returns for people who appreciate crazy in its most well reasoned and researched forms. Seriously, everything they say makes perfect sense if you accept the basic premise of the show which is that aliens are responsible for all the parts of human history we can't really explain. Obviously. Oh! And "Project Runway" returns with it's duel guiding stars of Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, who I really wish I could just hire for hilarious and wine soaked dinner parties. I'd start throwing dinner parties if that were an option. Here's your Thursday night TV:
8:00pm: "So You Think You Can Dance" on Fox
"Wipeout" on ABC

These new indie/rock tracks will keep your summer nights going until the sun rises, whether you're at a packed party or just hanging with your close friends. Each song has a different dynamic that captures the feel of summer, making the days and nights feel like they'll last forever.

Julian Casablanca's ability to control a song with his voice is clearly evident in this summer jam. The screechy guitar bends and fast-paced drums create an upbeat, catchy feel and a chorus with the perfect hook. Take one listen and you'll be singing this for the rest of the day.

Charlie Sheen crashing "Jimmy Kimmel Live!", planting a kiss on Jimmy Kimmel's "moist" lips, and giving out swags were the things audience saw on Monday, March 21 night. But what they didn't see and hear was how Sheen made a degrading comment about the host's ex-girlfriend, Sarah Silverman.
The producers had to cut a segment where Charlie slammed a toothbrush on Jimmy's desk and said, "That whore Sarah Silverman left this at my house". Kimmel felt it was "insulting" to his ex-girlfriend so they left it out from the broadcast and went straight from Sheen putting a mug on his desk to Sheen saying goodbye.

Tuesday Update: Just one problem when late night TV tries to exploit Charlie Sheen for ratings: he's a loose cannon. (Like, duh.) Turns out the Jimmy Kimmel show cut Charlie's last line when he said, "That whore Sarah Silverman left this at my house" and slammed a toothbrush on Jimmy's desk. I'm told Kimmel "felt it was insulting" to his ex-girlfriend. (Like, duh). Monday Midnight: There's no stopping media's newest phenom what with all the TV moguls talking to him about network gigs new and old. (Let's just hope he doesn't meet the same fate as Howard Beale...) So it's somewhat fitting that Charlie Sheen made a "surprise" appearance on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live! tonight during an interview with Mark Cuban. The musical guest, Brett Dennen, just tweeted the album cover Charlie signed and gave to a member of the audience. Jay Leno no doubt is losing his mind about missing this "winning" opportunity.

Cuban was praising the "Platoon" star and explaining that he has been in discussions with Sheen about a number of projects when Sheen burst onto the stage carrying a plastic shopping bag filled with swag and yelling, "How we doin'?...

Charlie Sheen made a surprise appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday night, "interrupting" an interview with Mark Cuban. The chairman of cable network HDNet had been telling Kimmel about a possible upcoming television venture with Sheen when the actor burst on to the stage. Sheen - who is in talks with Cuban about starring in a TV project for HDNet - acknowledged the audience's cheers before planting a kiss on Kimmel's mouth. "Your lips are very moist," he later joked. He also handed out T-shirts to the crowd, including one which said 'I Have Tiger's Blood In Me', gave Kimmel a mug bearing a fox's face, and autographed a copy of fellow guest Brett Dennen's album. Charlie Sheen crashed the party at "Jimmy Kimmel Live" Monday night (March 21), and it was ... Sheen-like.
Sheen stormed the stage about three-quarters of the way through the taping. Kimmel was talking to guest Mark Cuban (who was plugging his appearance on ABC's "Shark Tank") and had just brought up the subject of Cuban and Sheen possibly working together. Cuban was in the middle of saying he and the ex-"Two and a Half Men" star have been discussing "a lot of different things" when Sheen yelled "Cuban!" offstage. (Which leads us to believe that the appearance was at least semi-planned; the camera picked Sheen up awfully quickly after he entered.)
Then came roughly four minutes of Sheen planting a kiss on Kimmel's mouth, signing a copy of musical guest Brett Dennen's album and handing it to someone in the audience, Sheen telling Cuban "You forgot your merchandise over at my house today,...

Charlie Sheen is apparently still welcome on ABC. On Monday's Jimmy Kimmel Live, just as the host asked billionaire HDNet owner Mark Cuban about recent business meetings he's had with the run-amok actor, Sheen himself charged onstage carrying a tote bag full of T-shirts printed with various odes to "winning," "tiger blood" and other Sheenisms. But first, a kiss. As the audience went absolutely nuts (yeah, that'll help bring Sheen back down to earth, guys), Kimmel held out his hand but Sheen went right for a Euro-chic smooch on the lips. He then autographed the Brett Dennen album cover sitting on Kimmel's desk—the one the host was going to hold up when he...

Lately I've been seeing commercials for some of the new shows that are coming out this summer/next fall (never too early to start the ad campaign, right? Wrong.) and on one hand I'm excited that I'll have something new to write about for a brief shining moment before I reach the point that I don't have anything to say about it except "Hey, look, it's that shit again, some more." Also I'm having fun observing certain entertainment trends pass around from movies to television shows before everyone decides they're a bad idea and abandons them. Right now, we're in what I like to call the "Alien cycle" with the full on alien entries of "V" and the upcoming "Falling Lights" on TV as well as the possibly aliens but no one's really sure "The Event" which is still on for reasons I can't fathom. The rain began around late morning and lasted all day. My small umbrella came in handy. Again, we had a lot of musicians coming by to do short video interviews plus photo shoots with photographer Jeff Fasano. It's been a cool way to quickly meet a lot of artists. Brett Dennen came by. Jeez, he's tall (and a heck of a lot thinner). He'll be on David Letterman Friday, Oct 9th. I told him he should start off his appearance by announcing that he did Not sleep with Letterman. He just gave me a strange look. By late afternoon media and musicians alike were crowding into our tent to keep dry.
Ten-year-old guitar phenom Quinn Sullivan stopped in. I got a chance to catch his performance at the Austin Kiddie Limits stage. There were a lot of slack jaws from the small crowd as he blew us away...

Still royally tuckered out from some late-night Girl Talkin', day three at Bonnaroo was pretty mellow for me. I spent most of it catching the tunes at the Sonic Stage (Brett Dennen, Grace Potter, Heartless Bastards, etc.) where the lovely Paste oasis is stationed. In early evening, I caught a solid half hour of Athens, Ga. kooks, Of Montreal, who absolutely won me over. As soon as I return from Manchester, I plan on listening to their songs that have been sullenly sitting on my iPod, just waiting to be loved.

Singer/songwriter wears influences on sleeves, pant legs, headband, socks.
The temptation is to dismiss Brett Dennen as the sort of derivative ’70s-style singer/songwriter that serves as triple-a radio’s foundation. But maybe the way to look at Hope for the Hopeless—the California native’s third album—is less as the work of a provocative newcomer and more as period drama: historical fiction based in the early-’70s sound of Bob Dylan and The Band, with Van Morrison and Neil Young dropping by. A perfect example is “Wrong About Me,” a “Saint Dominic’s Preview” of an anthem that uses a familiar sound to tackle one of Van’s favorite subjects: professional criticism. Besides a forgettable jaunt into Afro-influenced pop (featuring a bored-sounding Femi Kuti), there’s nothing new about Hopeless, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Beyond mere aping, Dennen uses these stylistic references and...

Mandy Moore is taking it all off for her friend Brett Dennen – or at least her shoes. The actress just finished shooting the music video to Dennen's new single "Make You Crazy." Dennen, a guitarist from California, teamed with Afro-beat legend Femi Kuti for the song, which last week became the third-most added single across tastemaker stations, behind Ryan Adams's "Fix It" and The Killers' "Human." The "Make You Crazy" video is about freeing oneself from constraints and being true to oneself. In it, Dennen plays a barefoot shoe-store clerk who is trying to help a difficult customer (Moore). After going through too many pairs,...
