Now that American Idol is headlong into its "final" season (until the whole thing is rebooted as Idol Redux: America Strikes Back in 2022), I realize what I'll miss most about this white-bread karaoke pageant: the unbelievably awkward montages of Top 24 contestants dancing as Ryan Seacrest reads their names. Last night's Top 24 reveal didn't feature that classic sequence, which has been a mainstay of the series since the first few seasons. And that is a shame. Why? Because Idol is a dork circus and everyone deserves a chance to stand in the center ring and perform the pony for America's vote. In case you're unfamiliar with this gorgeous, ludicrously unflattering dance sequence, here is part of 2009's medley. Please watch in fear as Kris Allen goes full Caucasian with his startling "spank that ass" choreo. It's like he's foreshadowing the against-all-odds charisma that will win him the whole thing. Kristy Lee Cook’s new single, a duet with Mississippi-born country star Randy Houser, just arrived at radio stations but Idol Worship readers can hear the song now. “Wherever Love Goes” is a power ballad and the follow-up to “Airborne Ranger Infantry,” Cook’s debut single for her new label, Broken Bow. Houser, who records for Broken Bow’s sister label, Stoney Creek, had a No. 1 hit on the Billboard country charts last year with “How Country Feels” and is currently in the top five with “Runnin’ Outta Moonlight.” “Wherever Love Goes,” written by Neil Thrasher, Paul

There are only 10 contestants left on Season 12 of American Idol, but let’s not pretend each of ‘em has an equal chance at getting a confetti shower and “A Moment Like This” by the end of May.
As the performances from last week’s Semifinals — and subsequent results-show victory anthems — proved, several vocalists are already building sizeable fortresses in the hearts and minds of the Idoloonie Nation. Others, meanwhile, seem to be getting unwarranted praise from the judges — and the lack of constructive criticism could come back to haunt them like the Ghost of Kristy Lee Cook’s “Eight Days a Week.

Never judge a book by its cover. And never judge an American Idol judge by a pre-taped, carefully edited episode. That message was made troublingly clear by the shenanigans that occurred during Season 12′s first live telecast — featuring the Top 10 women squaring off for (presumably, but hopefully not) only five spots in the finale.
Keith thought pretty much everybody — even the excruciating Tenna Torres — was just great. Nicki Minaj lowered the bar by treating contestants as if they were on the menu at KFC, drooling over their breasts and legs. And Randy Jackson pronounced vibrtao as if it rhymed with frittata,...

How else to explain Zoanette Johnson being named by the show’s rebooted judges’ panel as one of the 10 most promising unsigned female singers in the country? Yes, Zoanette Johnson, the same chick whose tattered, Season 12 audition cover of “The Star Spangled Banner” caused Keith Urban to literally fall out of his chair — and was punctuated by an alarming booty drop.

Dear Santa,
I’ve tried to be a good boy this year — and not just because I want a new pony. The problem is, my job requires me to watch The X Factor for a living, and it’s turning me into a monster.
No, seriously, the cynical, horrible questions that went through my mind during Top 10 performance night left me feeling like I’d booked a one-way ticket to Hell; now it’s just a matter of whether I’m going express or local.
What kinds of questions am I contemplating, you ask? Oh, I dunno: As Diamond White...

American Idol judge Randy Jackson is quite possibly the most ridiculous person on television today, but I’m not sure I have any vitriol left for the man who is affectionately/ragefully known by the Idoloonie Nation as “The Dawg.” (Yes, folks, that’s the ‘D–’ I was referring to in my headline.)
I mean, imagine an Idol without Randy: Who else would use his position on the panel to wear offensive orchid blazers and try to launch a line of hideous hand-beaded pins. (That has to be the reason for those pins, right?) Who else could proudly blab about...

Whether or not you know what a quartet is — and make no mistake, Randy Jackson is pretty certain you don’t — there’s no denying that American Idol‘s Top 7 Redux performance night was packed more tightly than J.Lo’s shoe closet. A whopping 14 songs over two hours represented a new Idol record, noted Ryan Seacrest, and while I can’t say the evening came close to last week’s sensational Top 7 (Part 1) telecast, there were certainly enough enjoyable moments that I never once felt a pang of resentment over having to DVR Don’t Trust the B— in Apt.

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

The crew tonight dances in some fun neon and black tracksuit things and their routine is much trickier than I remember them doing in the past. The news of Pia “I Got Voted Off ‘Idol’ Way Early And All I Got Was This Awesome Record Deal” Toscano joining Interscope’s roster surprised no one, except maybe my cat Moo Shu. (Homegirl’s a Voice fan. She thinks Idol is so seven years ago.) Toscano already shattered records by being the lowest-placing Idol also-ran to nab a significant major label deal in the show’s ten year history. (She was ninth! Ninth, I say!)
While we wait to see whether Pia becomes the next Jennifer Hudson or Kristy Lee Cook, let’s look back at the careers of previous ninth-place finishers to see how they’ve fared.
Season One: Jim Verraros
Jim was our inaugural “token sob story” contestant, and he parlayed his name recognition into movie roles in popular gay indie flicks. (Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds might be my fave sequel title since Electric Boogaloo.

How have they changed this season? What are the biggest differences between season 10 and the seasons before it? Randy Jackson nicknamed "American Idol" season 10 "The Remix." As the Simon-less cycle starts its final descent, and as teenage country singers Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina compete on TV one last time, it's clear that Randy's premonition was 100% accurate. (At this point I should mention that I think remixes are often endless, repetitive, lazy cash grabs, more about the producer than the original artist.)
At this point, I'd urge everyone to raise your seat backs to their full, upright position. Failure to do so will result in you falling asleep within eight minutes. Unless you're a country fan, this will be the most boring "Idol" finale since Katharine McPhee sat down to sing "Over the Rainbow" for the 900th time.
But wait! What's this? A carefully worded post on TMZ hinting that Lauren Alaina may be too sick to perform and producers are scrambling to reinstate third-placer Haley Reinhart in the eleventh hour?...

It was Mother's Day all over again during Tuesday's (May 24) final "American Idol" performance night, as Lauren Alaina stole the show with her rendition of "Like My Mother Does," which was dedicated to her mom.
"Like My Mother Does" will be released as her first single should Alaina win the "Idol" crown during Wednesday's season 10 finale. But the song isn't exactly new: It was originally recorded by season-seven "American Idol" contestant Kristy Lee Cook, on her 2008 album Why Wait.

In between those two extremes, though, the not-so-lucky No. 7 spot has been occupied by singers who showed early promise, then flamed out (Anwar Robinson, Kimberly Caldwell) and those whose “package artist” good looks carried them further than their vocal abilities might’ve otherwise suggested (Ryan Starr, Tim Urban, Ace Young). By now, you're probably aware that Kelly Clarkson will return to "American Idol" this week, to perform her current Country smash "Don't You Wanna Stay" with Jason Aldean during Thursday night's results show.

There were so many baffling things about Naima Adedapo’s performance of Rihanna’s “Umbrella” last night: The dance moves. The reggae. The off-key vocals. The fact that she was gifted the pimp spot. Honestly, fellow Idol friends, I’m not sure which direction to go on this one. Hell, even Naima’s shirt wasn’t sure which direction to go.
On one hand, we have to give her props for taking a risk. But, if Idol were to follow those rules, the judges would have to applaud for Kristy Lee Cook for turning “Eight Days A Week” into a knee-slapping country tune.

Thursday night (February 10) kicked off Hollywood Week on "American Idol," where water bottles are liberally used as microphones, pajamas are considered appropriate TV attire and the judges can cut all the sad sacks with sob stories who they felt guilted into advancing the first time.
In other words, this is my now.
Seacrest knows what's up. In the intro, he wistfully intoned, "Countless dreams will be tested as we start this epic journey." I salivated with anticipation. (I also shuddered when I tried to imagine my dreams being tested. Please don't test that one dream where I'm a house cat and I get to sleep and snuggle 23 hours a day, Seacrest. It's my favorite ever! Purrrr.)
Unfortunately, the first hour of Hollywood Week did not live up to the hype that Seacrest enjoys perpetuating.
Before we get to the juicy drama-producing group numbers, we have to endure an obvious sudden death round.

The Washington state native, whose new hunting reality show, "Goin' Country," premiered this past weekend on Versus, has been getting an influx of bad publicity from animal rights activists who have already started a barrage of commenting on the content of the show. The eight episode series follows Kristy as she takes friends and family members on an array of hunting adventures.
A spokesperson for PETA shared with Fox411.com why the ...

Former " American Idol " finalist Kristy Lee Cook has landed right in the crosshairs of an animal rights group -- over a new reality show in which she's on the hunt for a record contract ... and animals to shoot. While promoting her new reality/hunting show " Goin' Country ," Cook -- who placed 7th on "Idol" in 2008 -- recently said, "I never used to like killing animals until I got out and experienced it. It's the food chain.

Former "American Idol" finalist Kristy Lee Cook is back on TV -- and she's packing heat.
Cook, who finished seventh on Season 7 of "Idol" in 2008, is starring in a new series about her life, her music and big-game hunting called "Goin' Country with Kristy Lee Cook." It's airing on cable channel Versus, home to National Hockey League regular-season games, the Tour de France and lots of outdoor shows.
Cook is also trying to bag a new record deal along with whitetail deer and pheasant. The show features her going out in search of hunting trophies with the likes of fellow "Idol" finalist Blake Lewis and singer Aaron Tippin, as well as giving a glimpse into her own life and music she's currently working on. Cook and her label, Arista Nashville, parted ways after she released her first album, "Why Wait," in late 2008; she's currently looking for a new label.

You might remember Kristy Lee Cook as the red-blooded country gal who went for broke with Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA" during the seventh season of "American Idol." So it's not exactly surprising that she's just returned with an equally red-blooded new hunting show called "Goin' Country."
The show — which premiered this weekend on the Versus network — follows Cook as she travels across the country blowing away animals, including deer, pheasant and turkey. Along the way, she also works toward landing a record contract (though not while hunting).
"I'm hoping that people will see the hunts as a chance to hang with family and friends and share an experience. It's so much fun in the outdoors, and when you harvest something for the meat, it really means...

Hey guys, Brian from tooFab here. We're going to try something new today -- because I hit up the " American Idol " finale and wanted to tell you about what you didn't see on the show. After straining to see past hundreds of tweens camped outside of the Nokia Theater to see former "Idol" contestants like Kristy Lee Cook and Kimberly Caldwell walk the red carpet, my friend Josh and I decided to go inside and wait -- and the show was well worth it! We look back at the judge's meanest, funniest and most truthful comments.

While the ostensible point of Wednesday night's "American Idol" finale was to decide the fates of Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox, the evening's spotlight returned again and again to Simon Cowell. Before the acerbic yet somehow lovable British judge left to jumpstart another Fox show, "Idol" celebrated his nine seasons of work with video segments, comedic bits and an appearance by former judge — and frequent Cowell sparring partner — Paula Abdul.
We're gonna miss the guy, with his ludicrously unbuttoned dress shirts and surly witticisms. It's an open question whether the show can survive without him, especially coming off a season that almost everyone can agree was lackluster at best and soul-crushing at worst. We worry about what "Idol" will be like without Cowell there to speak the truth...

So let’s just call this thing: Crystal killed it, and Lee kinda choked. Having discussed last night’s American Idol finale performance night with EW.com’s preeminent Idoloonie Michael Slezak, I know that was also his assessment of the evening from the vantage point of his living room couch. From my seat inside the IdolDeathStar — a.k.a. the Nokia Theater La Live — the difference between Crystal’s often effortless excellence and Lee’s unfocused striving was even more stark. I don’t think I’ve experienced an Idol finale, on TV or in person, this lopsidedly obvious...

Watching "Songs of the Cinema" night on "American Idol" was a lot like eating a large popcorn at the movies. Some of the kernels were close to perfect, with salty flavor and crispness balanced perfectly (Crystal). Others were stale, as if the concession workers had just dumped a new batch on top of one that had been sitting around since the theatrical run of "Kindergarten Cop" (Lee). And others were inexplicably soggy, which totally makes you gag 'cause Lord knows you didn't order any butter (Michael). (If Aaron was still on the show, I'd also talk about the kernels that were too young to pop.) And when the end credits rolled, you felt so bloated you regretted buying popcorn to begin with.

The Lennon-McCartney songbook is back (to where it once belonged) tonight on American Idol. Hopefully it'll be a little more Carly Smithson "Blackbird" than Kristy Lee Cook "Eight Days a Week." But no matter what hijinks or horror await us tonight, I'm forging ahead and updating the current season 9 rankings. Won't you do the same by voting for your favorite contestant in our Power List poll? In choosing their John Lennon and Paul McCartney-penned tunes for Tuesday night's (April 6) live show, did the "American Idol" hopefuls of season nine look back at the history of Lennon/McCartney renditions on the reality show? From Clay Aiken's inaugural Beatles performance up through this season's top 24, the "Idol" past offers success stories and cautionary tales. Let's take a gaze back at the good, the bad and the ugly of the Beatles songbook on "Idol."
The Good
Brooke White, "Let It Be" (season seven): White's simple, breathy take on the final Beatles' single was a perfect example of a true "Idol" breakout performance: the point at which we forget you're a contestant on a reality show and start to envision you as a professional recording artist.

"American Idol" had to wait seven seasons before they got the rights to use the songs of Beatles greats John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
And while Kristy Lee Cook proved that "Eight Days a Week" was not meant to be a country song, "I Saw Her Standing There" proved deadly for David Hernandez.
The Lennon/McCartney theme is back for Season 9, with the Top 9 performing songs from the duo next Tuesday (April 7).
Can't wait to see if anyone can come close to David Cook's take on "Eleanor Rigby."

With Lilly Scott, Alex Lambert and Katelyn Epperly sent home, season nine lost three of its most interesting contestants.

After an embarrassingly shaky start to the "American Idol" live shows late last month, many of the hopefuls — from Crystal Bowersox to Casey James to Lilly Scott — recovered to the point where we were no longer ready to declare season nine the worst in the show's history.
And then came Thursday night's results show. Standouts Scott, Alex Lambert and Katelyn Epperly were sent home, while sooo-not-ready-for-prime-time crooners Katie Stevens, Paige Miles and Tim Urban made the cut. That sound you hear? America erasing their DVR season passes of "Idol." Which raises the question: Is this season's newly announced top 12 the weakest we've ever seen?
Last season, which actually presented a top 13, gave us singers that were as talented as any we'd ever seen on "Idol" — Adam Lambert,...

On Wednesday night's (January 20) episode of "American Idol," the audition tour stopped in Orlando, land of Mickey Mouse and Skiiboski's mugshots!
The proximity to Miami allowed for Simon, Randy and Ryan to party hard and show up to work blatantly hungover (professionalism!) while guest judge Kristin Chenoweth's proximity to Kara DioGuardi turned Kara into a hyperactive eight-year-old child with Sapphic tendencies. (No wonder Simon ditched "Idol" — Kara and Kristin's high-pitched squeals could be used by Jack Bauer to torture hostile suspects.)
None of the talent featured in Orlando inspired me to jump up and down and pack up my Kradison shrine just yet. But the lackluster auditions (and unfortunate positive reinforcement the judges doled out all night long) inspired my wife to coin a new term: The Golden Picket.
The Golden Picket refers to any Golden Ticket given to a contestant out of pity. Golden ticket + Pity = Golden Picket.

Over the course of eight stupendous seasons, "American Idol" has showcased some of the best undiscovered singers in the country and a few who, well, were probably better left that way.
There have been plenty of highs and just as many lows. So, in celebration of Wednesday night's (May 20) Lambert vs. Allen finale, we're taking a look back at some of those who came before them — and were quickly forgotten. Because while there have been plenty of "Idol" also-rans who were really good, there are just as many who weren't. And really, we'll remember them a lot longer than the talented ones.
So here's a look back at some folks who reached for the stars (even though they probably shouldn't have) and didn't let a little thing...

Many thanks again to Noel for covering for me last night as I celebrated the anniversary of my being expelled from the womb. It looks like my parents picked a good day to have me as very few blockbuster artists underwhelm me quite as much as Mariah Carey, so it doesn't look like I missed much. Let's just get right to it: we all knew this day was coming, most of all Kristy Lee Cook. She seemed to carry a chip on her shoulder for the last four or five weeks, one labeled "I know you jerks all think I'm going home." She didn't exactly turn this underdog status into motivation to perform better and better each week, but the girl is lovely and not a terrible singer, so she should get her due for sticking around, even if her strange attempts to make...

The American Idol Top 10 performed last night, and by the end of the day, it will be a Top 9. Who will be the next contestant to leave us? That is quite a difficult question this week. For the third week in a row, my fellow BuddyTV writer John Kubicek and I sat down and held a long discussion on who will be the next eliminated American Idol singer. This week is so difficult because there's no one that's close to a consensus pick – everyone has vastly different opinions on who will go home and who should go home. While there may be two specific contestants who I think should be eliminated, I'm confident that neither will, for one reason or another. What, then? Well, we have to look at the past couple weeks, analyze the voting patterns and who has previously found themselves in the bottom three. John and I disagree on our predictions,...

American Idol's top ten performed tonight and the theme was a massive sham. According to Ryan Seacrest, the theme of the night was “songs from the year you were born.” Every American Idol contestant would perform songs recorded the year they were born. However, almost half of the singers cheated. Apparently, it was Ok for the contestants to do songs that were recorded long before they born (or conceived, or even before their parents met) if those same songs were re-recorded by no-name artists in their year of birth. Just once, I'd like American Idol to say "we cleared a bunch of random songs from all different time periods and the singers chose from the list we gave them." No one really cares about the theme, especially if the various songs are going to span genres anyway. Tonight's episode was better than last week, and I have no real...

Something very strange is going on with "American Idol" this year. It's way too normal.
As the top 10 contestants take the stage Tuesday (7 p.m., Wfld-Ch. 32 ), there’s barely a ripple of controversy, compared with past seasons. Sure, there was the blip caused by the emergence of former contestant David Hernandez’s past as a stripper. And the talent contest endured a fair amount of criticism for showcasing singers who’ve had record deals in the past. But even those “controversies” didn’t have much staying power.
Where did it all go wrong? Isn’t “American Idol” supposed to be a long festival of outrageousness and scandals? Plus a little singing?
But this is an especially sedate, possibly sedated, “Idol” season. There’s no Sanjaya Malakar – a contestant who compensates for his relative lack of talent by purposely riling up viewers and judges with bizarre song choices and hairstyles. There...

It hurts my brain to do these American Idol rankings. The mere act of placing David Archuleta ahead of so many better and more interesting singers is enough to give me a headache. We can't know exactly who the people are that vote for Little Mr. Archuleta every week, but it stands to reason that the demographic is young and female. The overwhelming screams that rain out from the crowd every time he takes the stage is evidence enough, and historically the teen vote has been about the most important type of vote on American Idol. I hate to say it – but the signs point to Archuleta winning the competition. Anyways, these American Idol rankings are not based on my personal views. They are meant to be objective as possible.
