In all the excitement of the BAFTAs, it’s worth appreciating the craft that helps all those films make any sense at all. Here’s the full list of the British Film Editors’ award-winners.
Imagine a world without film and TV editors. It doesn’t bear thinking about, really. Making anything with a camera at all would be bloody hard, for a start, and then you’d have to use that take where Idris Elba realised he had yoghurt on his trousers. Oh, behave.
Good job, then, we’ve got British Film Editors, the non-profit association dedicated to the art of sticking all those bits of footage together to make something sensible-looking. Every year, they hold the Cut Above Awards, a celebration of editing achievement comparable to the guild awards in the States.
Held on 16th February, the 2024 awards pitched current awards favourites Oppenheimer and Poor Things alongside documentaries like Still: A Michael J.

American talk show host Stephen Colbert believes that Twitter will be chaos if Elon Musks starts charging for blue ticks.
Musk completed his £38bn Twitter takeover last week and has already said he is the “sole director” after dissolving the company’s entire board of directors.
In a leaked business plan, it has since emerged that Musk is apparently attempting to figure out ways to monetize the social media platform.
According to the plan, Musk wants to charge verified users 20 (around £17) a month to keep their blue tick. Said users will only have 90 days to sign up before their tick gets removed.
“But that would be chaos, I rely on that blue check mark to know which of my butters I can’t not believe!” Colbert said on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Tuesday (1 November).

Our American Idol “journey” has come to an end, but let us not weep for what’s been cancelled, let us instead go to iTunes and download the Season 15 winner’s new single. Hey, from a songwriting vantage point, it may not be “Home,” but it definitely ranks above “No Boundaries” and “Inside Your Heaven” — and we bought those, too. And if this show can produce one more bona fide radio/touring superstar, maybe the inevitable reboot will happen sooner than expected, no?

American Idol season 1 debuted about a week after The Wire season 1 did. Though my TV tastes over the years trended much more towards complicated scripted dramas like the latter, I spent a long time watching the former, and enjoying it in the moments when the series wasn't busy padding its run time with inanities (like the entire judging career of Randy Jackson) and simply let the contestants sing. Often, those performances were just overpraised photocopies of the original moments, but when an Idol singer put their own stamp on a familiar tune, or dug up an obscurity and made it sound like a hit, I couldn't begrudge the series its enormous popularity. Eventually, the show got too repetitive for me to stick with, especially as more and more scripted options rose up demanding my attention. The last time I watched an Idol season from start to finish was the 9th,...
