It takes a village to topple a record. That seems to be the thinking behind the Flaming Lips' efforts to gather an army of musical cohorts to help them take aim at Jay-z's record for the most live concerts in 24 hours.
As part of a record attempt that will take place over 24 hours during the June 27 O Music Awards, the Lips will try to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records by playing shows in eight different cities.
We can now reveal that they will get some support from an eclectic group of musicians that includes festival favorites Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, modern bluesman Gary Clark Jr., country singer Hunter Hayes, and indie rock acts Givers,...

Too often I fall victim to the classic “judging a book by its cover” and miss out on a great band simply because of their name (Foster the People, anyone?). A few years ago, I recall seeing “Ghostland Observatory” emblazoned seemingly everywhere I looked: magazines, music news, festival lineups. What the heck does it even mean? To this day, I have no freakin’ clue, but I’ve been making up for lost time by catching their concerts – a digital light show extravaganza – at every opportunity and preaching their greatness to anyone within earshot.
Surprisingly, Ghostland is just a duo of best buds from a place where it’s cool to be weird: Austin, Texas. Thomas Ross Turner mans the drums/keys/synthesizers, providing most of the signature Ghostland digital bleeps and blurps that the band is famous for. He frequently, or pretty much always, dons a cape,...

Oklahoma weirdo-rockers the Flaming Lips have always tried to do things their own eccentric way. Lately, that means gummy skulls, cel phone songs and a slew of somewhat unlikely collaborations. For next year's Record Store Day, frontman Wayne Coyne says he intends to create a compilation of tracks the Lips have done with other artists such as Texas chillwave pioneers Neon Indian, Rhode Island noise-inators Lightning Bolt and lowkey electronic act Prefuse 73. The indie rock trio have further collaborations planned with Death Cab for Cutie, Ghostland Observatory, Cloudland Canyon and Nick Cave. Additionally, they're looking to work with...

Director: Nathan Christ Cinematographer: Robert L. Garza Stars: Black Joe Lewis, Bill Baird, Ghostland Observatory, Cari Palazzolo Studio/Running Time: Reversal Films, 90 mins. Austin, Texas, shamelessly labels itself as the “Live Music Capital of the World”, a moniker validated by annual events like SXSW and the Austin City Limits Music Festival, and the seemingly limitless number of live music venues about town. But unbeknownst to most outsiders, Austin continuously wages wars within those city limits, with music as its battleground. Echotone beautifully examines those battles by neither condemning nor sensationalizing but by letting the city speak through its inhabitants....

Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell has long dreamed of taking his festival overseas. After announcing earlier this year that he would finally make that vision come true by putting on a Lollapalooza in Chile in April, he unleashed the lineup for the two-day event on Friday (January 28).
The top of the roster reads like a who's who of past Lolla performers and includes such headliners as Kanye West, the Killers, 30 Seconds to Mars and, of course, Farrell's own Jane's Addiction.
The show, which will take place in O'Higgins Park in Santiago on April 2 and 3, will also feature the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Deftones, Fatboy Slim, the Flaming Lips, Cypress Hill, 311, Cold War Kids, the National and Ben Harper. After nearly 20 years of wandering the U.S. and then putting...

With the Sundance Film Festival in full swing, activities ranged from snowboarding lessons, to all night ragers with celebs!
The 2011 Sundance Film Festival is finally taking off — and as Murphy’s Law would have it, the weather acted up for the first time as well! However, despite the nippy temperatures, brutal wind chill and intense snow fall, celebrities, fans and film makers all seemed to make it out for the festivities down town!
11:00 a.m. After partying last night at Ghostland Observatory at Harry O’s, the morning rolled around Way too quickly — and we weren’t the only ones feeling that way! Annika and I headed to the Oakley Learn To Ride Program (fueled by Muscle Milk) on Main Street and were greeted by super friendly (and also tired) snowboarders, who helped us get outfitted in Oakley gear, DC shoes and snow boots and New Era hats and...

Park City exploded with celebs, gifting suites and parties…but all I wanted was a glimpse of Mr. James Franco!
What a day, what a day! I honestly don’t even know where to begin. My partners in crime and I packed more fun into one day than most people do the entire Sundance Film Festival! From brunches, to suites, to dinners, to parties, we did it all…yet we still somehow managed to miss the one person we were dying to see (read below)! Nevertheless, Friday was still a day to remember and in an effort to most efficiently and accurately paint the day for you, I’ve broken down each hour. Please Note: Just reading this diary might make you exhausted!
11:00 a.m.: After primping, prepping and recovering from Snoop Dogg the night before, Mel, Annika and I headed down to Main St. for the Carrera Sunglasses brunch,...

If paging through album reviews is a favorite pastime of yours, you'll love this visual guide to the past year's worth of Pitchfork's that was painstakingly compiled into a fun-to-mouseover graphic. And if you despise reading album reviews, then you may find this to be a nice way of absorbing them anyway.
The Pitchfork obsessed Year in Reviews depicts all of the indie site's 2010 album reviews across an interactive chart showing the album's place between a rating of 1 and 10. The lowest is the horridly titled, "Codename: Rondo" by Ghostland Observatory at 1.5, and the highest is, of course, Kanye West's "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" at a rare 10, joining the likes of Radiohead's fabled "Kid A" in the top spot. The Av Club notes that it's actually the first 10 given out since since Wilco's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" in 2002.
A glance shows an upper end heavily populated by re-releases and trips...

Day 3 of Austin Film Festival was supposed to begin with me attending the “A Conversation with David Peoples” panel at 9:00am, but I decided to sleep in instead; and if I didn’t have an 11:00am interview scheduled with Mark Potts, Cole Selix and Brand Rackley from S&M Lawn Care I probably would have stayed in bed even longer. But it was worth rolling out of bed to chat with Mark, Cole and Brand -- three of the most genuinely nice (and funny) guys in the movie business. I walked away with about an hour’s worth of content, and I’m looking forward to transcribing every minute of it. If you have not seen S&M Lawn Care, do yourself a kindness and attend Sunday’s 7:45pm screening at the Alamo Ritz. Speaking of the Alamo Ritz (my transition skills amaze me sometimes), that is...
