Chicago – What began in Chicago in 2016 … as a preview to its eventual Broadway run … comes back to where it now belongs. The passionate and ebullient Kokandy Productions presents “The SpongeBob Musical,” and yes, it will satisfy fans of the cartoon series with flash, dash, and since it’s under the sea, Splash!
Play Rating: 4.5/5.0
What impressed me most about this production … originally created and produced by Nickelodeon … was the enthusiastic talent of its young and very vibrant cast, especially the manic energy of Quinn Rigg, who portrayed Squidward. Also Frankie Lee Bennett, as SpongeBob, nailed the squishy persona as the show’s centerpiece – part tumbler, tart commentator and wondrous innocent. The memorable songs were commissioned from rock stars, including David Bowie, the Plain White T’s, John Legend and Steven Tyler/Joe Perry of Aerosmith. For ticket info and more, click Spongebob.

Perhaps, one day, somebody will make a film in which a hastily arranged marriage of convenience between two virtual strangers doesn’t blossom into real love, and instead more tensely culminates in mutual acrimony and cathartic divorce. Until then, those inclined can moon over drippy, dopey fantasies like “Purple Hearts,” an opposites-attract romance that — give or take an Iraq War backdrop and some current social-justice talking points — could have been made at any point in the last 70-odd years. Principally a vehicle for Disney-reared singer-actor Sofia Carson, as an independent-minded Latina singer-songwriter who marries a conservative Marine for insurance benefits, only for military tragedy to bring them closer together, this glossy but gloopy Netflix original is primarily out to serve its leading lady’s legions of fans, some of them perhaps young enough not to have seen it all before.

Here’s an interesting bit of news that I never thought I would be reporting on. Legendary pro skateboarder Tony Hawk is developing a Broadway musical!
The Musical will be based on Nick Hornby’s 2007 novel Slam, which Tony Hawk is a character in. Hawk will serve as a producer on the musical and he will also be the skate choreographer because there will obviously be skateboarding in it!
The music and lyrics for the production will be created by composer Mark Mothersbaugh (Dogtown and Z-Boys, Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, The Lego Movie, Thor: Ragnarok) and SpongeBob SquarePants the Musical‘s Kyle Jarrow will be handling the book.
Producers describe Slam as “a funny, heartfelt coming-of-age story about 17-year-old Sam, a kid from a troubled background who finds refuge and hope in the world of skateboarding. When he falls in love for the first time, with a girl named Alicia,...

Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of Nickelodeon’s signature cartoon series, SpongeBob SquarePants, died on Monday. He was 57.
The animator and former marine biology instructor created a powerhouse property with the quirky SpongeBob SquarePants — the global merchandise sales alone have gone north of $13 billion for a brand that has also yielded two animated feature films, nine music albums and a Broadway musical.
Hillenburg revealed in March of last year that he was battling Als (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). His passing was announced Monday in a Nickelodeon statement that framed his singular sensibility, which gave the world a loopy but lovable classic of television animation.
“We are incredibly saddened by the news that Steve Hillenburg has passed away following a battle with Als. He was a beloved friend and long-time creative partner to everyone at Nickelodeon, and our hearts go out to his entire family. Steve imbued SpongeBob SquarePants with a unique sense...

As with the Outer Critics Circle Awards, these kudos also consider both Broadway and off-Broadway fare. To that end, the Broadway production of “The Band’s Visit” was ineligible, save for its sound design which was deemed to be new and won with these voters.

That old Broadway dictum – Never share a stage with fuchsia sea anemones – is blown to smithereens when Gavin Lee taps his way through “I’m Not A Loser,” the gleeful 11 o’clock number of Broadway’s SpongeBob SquarePants musical that all but guaranteed Lee his Tony Award nomination this year for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. An homage to Broadway panache, cartoon anarchy and good old four-legged tap dancing, “I’m Not A Loser” is, night after night, capped by the kind of sustained applause that combines Bravo! with What Was That?
And that’s right, four-legged. Lee, in top hat and tails cleverly outfitted by designer David Zinn with an extra pair of legs and in a just-right shade of (perfectly described) celadon, plays Squidward Q. Tentacles, the grouchy but starry-eyed cephalopod forever carping at the underwater denizens of Bikini Bottom.

The CW has made it official, opting not to bring back freshman military drama Valor for a second season.
Valor, starring Matt Barr and Christina Ochoa, underperformed in ratings and failed to receive a back-nine order. The show’s stars already signed on to new gigs as series regulars in pilots — the CW’s Skinny Dip and ABC’s ensemble drama pilot A Million Little Things, which is certain to go to series, respectively.
In Valor, the boundaries between military discipline and human desire were tested on a U.S. Army base that houses an elite unit of helicopter pilots trained to perform clandestine international and domestic missions. The drama unfolded in the present as well as in flashbacks to a failed mission involving one of the first female pilots in the unit, ultimately uncovering layers of personal and government/military secrets and leading to a season-long plan to rescue a group of Mia soldiers.

“Valor” has been canceled by the CW after one season.
The military drama that followed an elite unit of U.S. Army helicopter pilots starred Matt Barr, Christina Ochoa, Charlie Barnett, Corbin Reid, W. Tre Davis, Nigel Thatch and Melissa Roxburgh. The series came from executive producers Bill Haber, Anna Fricke and Kyle Jarrow, and was a co-production from CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros. Television.
“Valor” debuted on the CW’s fall 2018 schedule but failed to receive the back-nine pickup. Its season concluded in late January 2018 with an average of 958,000 total viewers and a rating of 0.21 in the 18-49 demo. “Valor” actually beat the CW’s freshman series “Dynasty” in the ratings. However, “Dynasty” was among the 10 series the network renewed back in April.
