MaryAnn’s quick take… Moody, atmospheric, even beautiful in its grimness; a medieval adventure unlike any we’ve seen before, with a sharp attention to psychological and moral realism. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
New Spider-Man Tom Holland stars in an action-adventure with Richard Armitage — of The Hobbit and Hannibal fame, for starters — and Jon Bernthal, who’s in this summer’s hip hit Baby Driver and is about to debut as Marvel’s The Punisher on Netflix. This seems like a no-brainer to market to Hollywood’s supposed core audience of teen boys and young men, so how is it possible that Pilgrimage debuted almost unheralded in a few cinemas in the Us with a simultaneous VOD release, and went straight to the DVD in the UK?
About to get medieval on someone…...

Richard Armitage chats to us about Pilgrimage, Ocean's 8, anti-cyberbullying and Castlevania...
Back when we last spoke to Mr Armitage in 2015, he was over in Ireland filming Pilgrimage, alongside Jon Bernthal and, at that point, the relatively unknown Tom Holland, who you’ve probably heard of by now due to his current web swinging antics across cinema screens.
It’s been a two year wait for Pilgrimage to hit these shores since then, but it’s finally out on disc and digital download and adds another fine villain to Richard Armitage’s roster, while providing an exhilaratingly violent and gritty quest across 13th century Ireland, when a group of monks try to keep a sacred relic safe from various undesirables.
The film's strengths come from the stellar cast, suitably grim atmosphere and sporadic carnage; it also has the emotional power that always comes from seeing blood spilt in the name of religion,...

Rlj Entertainment has just acquired the U.S. rights for Brendan Muldowney's Irish action thriller Pilgrimage, according to ScreenDaily. It stars Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming) and Jon Bernthal (Netflix's Punisher). Jamie Hannigan wrote the screenplay about 13th century monks who escort a holy relic to Rome on a treacherous journey. Having written many articles about Rlj Entertainment acquisitions over the years, I feel pretty confident that this will mean Pilgrimage will get at least limited theatrical and decent coverage on some digital platforms. Rlj almost always follow up with a hard copy release afterwards. There should be no reason why our American readers cannot watch Pilgrimage upon its release in the U.S....

The story of a group of monks transporting a holy relic might not sound like the basis for an action thriller. But throw Richard Armitage, Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland into the mix, plus the possibility of trouble from barbarians on the road to Rome, and you have a good chance of a little violence ahead. That’s the basic set-up behind Pilgrimage.Brendan Muldowney is set to start directing the film next mouth, working from a script by Jamie Hannigan. The basic story, as mentioned, finds a group of 13th century monks who must escort a monastery’s holiest relic to Rome and find their faith severely tested en route. With assistance from the Irish Film Board and Creative Europe, Muldowney and primary producers Conor Barry and John Keville have tracked down the cash for a shoot that will take in the West Coast of Ireland and Ardennes in Belgium.

Just. Wow. Writer and director of the short film Two Point Five Billion Jamie Hannigan makes scientific advancement a very personal and sacrificial affair. Having done its rounds in the festival circuit Hannigan can now make his short available for everyone to see. Subtle in tone yet not lacking in impact Hannigan's short film proves once again that you can do sci fi well with minute aesthetic and detail. It is well worth watching!
